[Q] Selling the gs3 to get the note 2 without waiting for contract to end? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I currently have the Samsung galaxy s3 and its in perfect condition literally mint condition. I am a huge fan of the note 2 and wanted to sell my galaxy s3 for at least 300 to 250 dollars so that i can purchase a note 2, but will i be able to do this without waiting for my contract to end? I prefer to take care of this at the best buy store rather than a sprint store, but if i must go into a sprint store then so be it. Thanks!!!

You will be able to do it, but you might have to pay,the amount you have to pay to end your contract depends on how much time you have left on it.
This is from sprint;

You can do that as long as someone on the account is eligable for a phone upgrade (new contract). Upgrade their line with the Note 2 then have Sprint swap the two phones so you can keep your same phone numbers but have traded phones. I did this when I got my S3.

Typical selling price for an S3 is $150 right now.

GNEX dilemma!

My trusty Gnex was recently stolen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863863, and I am currently facing a troubling dilemma. I realize there are something like 5 "Nexus" devices being released this fall/winter. I also realize that isnt "all" that long from now. However, it is a few months away and a lot will be going on. I have a little one at home and they grow so fast at this age. These next few months have Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years which are all key photo/video opportunities. The phone I am currently using is an old Gingerbread device that is "ok", but certainly not able to take the quality pics and videos like the Gnex.
So my dilemma is do I drop $350 (directly from Google) and pick up a new phone or wait? To be honest, if I could get the Gnex for like $150 or $200 I would be happy to sign a service contract. I am currently on Tmobile and they have told me I am upgrade eligible since I havent had a contract in many years, but they dont sell the Gnex! Due to the fact that all CDMA providers SUCK (and are so expensive) I cant consider moving away from Tmobile, so changing carriers is not an option. I checked around and I cant even find a 3rd party retailer that sells the Gnex AND can provide me with a new Tmobile plan. The biggest problem is I know the minute the new Gnex drops I am going to want it, but I dont know if I can justify spending $350 now plus another $500 (or whatever) in a few months.....

Don't know why you're even considering this, considering that service contracts cost way more than the $150-$200 that you'd save.
Not going to kid, it does suck that you lost the phone at this particular time. There aren't very good options when the next big thing you want isn't out quite yet; they all cost money. Buying a new Nexus will be $350ish, a new contract will cost $1400ish (depending on the upfront price of the phone and your opportunity costs); that comes out to $800 even if you resell the phone for full price (an unrealistic scenario) when the next Nexus comes out. If I could stand it, I'd just keep using your gingerbread and pray it comes out soon.
Getting a used GN if you want to pay around $200 (as Jason suggests) is also another option. Hell, you might even be able to resell it for a similar price (though naturally there will be a price decrease when the new one comes out).
Used has a corner crack but everything still functional do still a great device

I just saw on tmobiles site you can get a Galaxy S III for $99 on contract. That would be the way to go if you don't mind a contract.

If you don't mind buying something other than a Galaxy Nexus, why get yourself a GS III once it gets cheaper. Its actually going for $99.99 online right now! Sale ends at 11:59pm today!

GSIII is not cheaper; you have to pay the price of a contract which, as I pointed out above, can exceed $1000.
The OP mentioned he/she is already with T-Mobile and eligible for an upgrade.

That does not reduce the opportunity cost of a new contract in any way.

Trust me, I am very aware of how annoying contracts are and that is why I have been without one for so many years. However, I currently get a decent discount from a company I used to work at (6 years ago!!) which makes my bill comparatively low. If I switch to the new Tmobile unlimited plan I will be all in (taxes, and everything) for just over $60 per month. I do see that Straight Talk offers "unlimited" everything for $45, but I don't know if that includes taxes or if it is truly unlimited. I have given thought to going to prepaid however, so you do raise a valid point. In either case though, I still need a new GNEX!!

The S III seems like a nice enough phone, but its really just not for me. I swore I would never purchase another non-Nexus phone again as I do not care for the horrible "tweaks" these companies do to core Android OS. I would end up rooting it and then installing a vanilla JB ROM on the thing, and then being frustrated that it wasnt actually a Nexus device!

I already have a decent digital camera, but using it feels like a throwback to 2002. It far thicker than my (any?) phone, requires I carry two devices, and can't record in proper HD. Yes, it does take nicer pictures but the "cons" of constantly needing to remember to carry it make it frustrating. I also must say that I got used to the convenience of my photos automatically syncing to Dropbox!
Regarding the suggestion for a used GNex, I do like the idea and I am currently searching for one. The problem is that Craigslist is so full of scammers these days. Even the people that DO actually have it will tell you its a "9.5 out of 10" in terms of condition and then when you go meet them the thing looks like it went through a cement mixer.
I definitely would never get a non nexus android phone again including the S3, I would rather go back to using an iPhone than do that.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note II CONFIRMED FOR Oct24

I walked into a T-Mobile store and the store manager confirmed that tomorrow I will be able to buy my Galaxy Note 2. The store did not have a display model and they only recived 3units for sale. Two of them being white. However, the manager did place the grey model on hold for me for only $5 down. I'm ditching my Galaxy S3. Hope this helps the T-Mobile buyers...

$249.99 on T-Mobile? That must be value plan...the value plan you are buying the phone outright and paying per month. The classic plan is just like all of the other carriers. T-mobile is really pushing their value plans.
Value is better priced any way you look at it.

Phones purchased on value plans will also be blacklisted if you don't pay your bill. There was a big scam a while ago with that. That is why if you purchase a T-Mobile phone second hand, you should call T-mobile with the IMEI to make sure it wasn't purchased on a value plan.
ok so here is my deal. I have the t mobile galaxy s3 which i bought less than 2 weeks ago and now I want the note 2. I paid 470 for the white s3 as it was used but it was very well maintained (looks new). The reason ipaid so much for it was because im not in a contract. Im using simple mobile which basically im getting t-mobile service (yes even 4g 42.2) for 50 bucks a month (minus insurance but even under a contract never bothered as i always got good cases). What would you suggest i do? I was thinking of selling the S3 for 430ish USD and put the rest on a note (hopefully i wont have to pull any more than 100 from pocket). Let me know what do you suggest

I spoke to customer service and the off contract price is $700+. I really don't see a situation where you will be able to come $100 out of pocket and get the Note 2 without signing a contract...

No, I have a full upgrade available. But they didn't have the upgrade price today and told me the retail which was $700 plus tax.
ugh...$700 is a very hard pill to swallow. debating if i should wait it out or pick one up now if thats the price...im not due for an upgrade until next june.
I guess ill keep my S3. Price is a little too much. Thanks a lot though!
You could always sell the GS3 and come out a little more than $100 out of pocket. If you sell the GS3 for $450, you can get an international note on Ebay for around $550. Pop in a straight talk sim (either AT&T or T-mobile service) and pay $45 a month for unlimited everything.
TMO News
I've been obsessively monitoring the TMO News website for the last couple weeks (OK, maybe longer than that - I really want a Note 2). Anyway, they have the leaked pricing information and updates on availability, etc. http://www.tmonews.com/

I was thinking in doing that but the international one doesnt support 42.2 HSPA+ on t mobile. I dont want to go straight talk because it doesnt have the t mobile 3g frequencies (correct me if im wrong) but it definitely doesnt have the 42.2 radio. Right now im getting 18 down and 2 up on simple mobile. If i go at%t, i know my data will only go as far as 5mbps at its best. The radios are the issue. If the international supported 42.2mbps, ill definitely have no problem getting it

[Q] Can I sell a phone

I was wondering if I can sell my Galaxy S3 so that I could by the Note 2. I only wonder because I bought the S3 several months ago under the 2 year agreement price. I of course would still have the contract but don't know about how it works. Thanks
As long as you fulfill your contractual obligation, you can sell it

You can sell your phone to an individual and buy a Note 2 (either paying full price or getting it used) and activate it on your account in place of the S3. Your contract will not be affected by that. Not sure I completely understand the question.

My intention is to sell the S3 to someone, then use the money to get the note through an upgrade on another line of mine. I basically just want to make sure the other person will be able to activate the phone.

People buy and sell phones all the time, as long as the ESN isn't bad in any way (like marked as stolen or currently in use on another plan) Anyone can activate the device on their plan.
When I was testing some things on the EVO 3D, I had someone send me their phone that I could use for testing purposes, and then someone else was kind enough to offer their other line because I needed to be able to test activation and real world usability of a fix. I gave them the ESN, and they were able to activated it without even having the phone in their possession. So I had someone else's device on ANOTHER person's plan. It doesn't matter to Sprint, it's all just numbers, the only thing stopping them is whether it's stolen or already in use.
So as long as I deactivate it from my account we should be good?

[POLL] Upgrade to S3 now or wait for S4?

I am due for an upgrade with Sprint. I am currently on the Evo 4g. There seems to be some good holiday deals on the S3 right now. I was thinking about jumping on one of these. However, after doing some reading it looks like the S4 may not be too far around the corner. Any thoughts on waiting it out or even waiting for the first of the year for some of the new HTC line? I know waiting with a subsidized carrier like Sprint means you're basically losing money, so I'm trying to decide the best course of action.
I would say just get the s3 its an amazing phone I'm running cm10 on it right now and its super fast stable and the battery life is amazing! The s4 most likely won't be out until next summer if you want a major upgrade I would say wait for the galaxy note3 or the nexus5!

I got mine on black friday so it was impossible to turn down. I had the evo, but it just wasn't cutting it. Rooted and everything stripped out of it, I still couldn't have facebook, google music, google maps, and skype installed at the same time because of storage issues. I really like the s3, and if you can get a good deal on it, you might as well. My gf still has the evo, and she's now eyeing my s3. If you want to wait for the s4, you might as well wait for the s5 or s6, or whatever... My philosophy with tech has always been, what will benefit me the most now, because if you always have in the back of your head that you plan to upgrade, you never will. Do it now, or do it never lol
I'm currently leaning toward the upgrade, but I may have just been dealt a blow. I checked with Amazon and they said I'm not eligible for the $50 price because I'm a current customer (despite that I'm up for a two year contract extension). Does anyone else have any experience with this? Is this true?

That's what I figured as well. I haven't really found any information on the internet about people upgrading after a 2-year contract either. Has anyone successfully done so through Amazon or any other retailer? Perhaps I was mistaken when I thought the discounted price applied to me?
Also, will it matter that I am on a SERO plan? Don't want to lose that guy!

Easy call, if you see an outstanding deal on the S3 ($50 or under) then snag one. If a deal doesn't come your way then hold off. I'm on the SGS3 right now and it is a pretty amazing device. I was able to get it for $50 through Sprint on the Black Friday stuff, my wife's SGS3 on the other hand we shelled out $250 for, and we just wish we had waited the extra couple of months *Grin*.. Of course if you are like some and Money isn't an issue Get Both !
Just got mines Today at Best Buy for $49.99. One day sale!!!

I also had the original Evo 4G for two years wating on the SIII to come out.
At this point, you might as well wait for the SIV to use your upgrade option. Shop around for deals on SIII online and you might just be able to snag both phones.
It is an amazing phone though. I can say with confidence that i'll keep it until I get a good deal on a SIV, after the first few months after the launch date.
Well after talking with Sprint Employee Account (I'm on a SERO-P plan), they offered me $75 off my bill for the next two months to effectively make the S3 $50. I went ahead and took the plunge! I should have the phone tomorrow.

I decided to go ahead and take the plunge for the S3. I was eligible for the early upgrade and I had the Buy Back program from Best Buy. If I waited for the "next" phone I would have lost the Buy Back. Turned out the S3 was $99 and the Buy Back gave me $130 on my old Epic 4G, so I made out pretty well. Got the phone and had some left over cash to use on a case.

Best Buy has Note II for $200 w/2 year contact.

If this isn't in right place, please do move it.
I had my new Note I for 44 days, decided they're not going to give Note I JB anytime soon, if ever, so I took it back Best Buy and got the Note II.
I paid $150 for Note I and extra $150 for the Note II.
Total cost with contract was $300.
(Note I is going for $100.
Then this weekend I saw that Best Buy had it on sale for $200 w/2year contact. So I went back and they gave me back $100. That sure made my day! It WILL go back up by this weekend.

Better jump on it TODAY as it's the last day for it before it goes back up to $300. In my case, I got a $100 back since I bought the Note II two weeks ago. That was a NICE surprise, getting a $100 back. I was happy to spend $300 as this phone is worth every penny!
I opened a new line to snag this GNII at Best Buy... my contract on my line isn't due until November. Ill gladly pay the $10 a month for the 'add a line's charge. Or pay ETF up front, its still less that the no-contract price.

They refunded me $100 since I got the Note II two weeks ago.
I wonder if I still qualify for the $50 gift card too?
Can't hurt to go down and ask...

I'm in a battle with them now because I bought mine on Sunday when the deal was introduced. The rep told me that I would be able to get it, but when I called back to ask about how I'll be receiving it they told me that I won't. They said because I ordered the phone before the 10th, I'm not eligible. So I called corporate. They sent me to mobile post customer support. And I finally got a case number.
The last guy told me that since Sunday, it has been a huge problem because 90% of the reps don't know how the deal works... So they have had a lot of angry customers. Hopefully I'll get the gift card. It would be nice to have the phone for $150 instead of $200, which is cheaper than the lowest I've seen which was on amazon in 2012 for 175.
The $50 gift card is to compensate those who missed the $100 discount.

Wow.....so you can trade in phones at Best Buy? Didnt know this. I need to look into trading in 2 Samsung Blazes. I agree 1000% being on Tmobile was horrible. Sooo so happy to be back with a reliable service provider

First, do you homework on the deals... and let me make this clear... you've got to talk to the right person. Always. Reps, especially on the phone, will give you nothing. The ones working in the phone area will give you nothing. This is what they're taught to do. I ALWAYS talk to the service department and if I have to, the store manager. Never been turned down. Of course I have silver status, so that means I spend a lot of money at BB. They want to keep me happy.
I have silver status which gives me 45 days to return or change my mind.
I had the Note I for 42 which I paid $150 for it. Two weeks ago, I paid another $150 for the Note II. Now I got 45 more days. Then last weekend they refunded me $100 of that for the $199 deal at the time for the Note II, then yesterday, a $50 gift card that the floor guys didn't even know was going on.
The deal got sweeter today as the weekend special says this:
If you get a Samsung Phone with a two year contract, you get $100 off on select Samsung Notebooks.
Look online or get their deals ads when you go to the store.
Computers & Tablets : Samsung_Laptop_Tablet_Phone_Offer_103656 - Best Buy
Guess what... since I'm in my 45 day time frame, I got a Samsung Notebook w/$100 off today.
Am I saving money or what!!! :victory:
I essentially got mine free... I was having a problem with my Atrix 2. It was my third one in a year. The rep offered to sell me the note 2 for 299. I argued and complained and eventually got him to sell it to me for 150, including overnight shipping. The next day it didn't come. I called in and raised hell again and they gave me a 100 dollar credit on my bill for my inconvenience. The rep PROMISED me a Monday delivery. It didn't come today and the tracking info says it will be delivered on Wednesday. I called and raised hell again and they gave me a 50 dollar credit.
I have to wait for 2 more days to get it, but that ain't bad for a free note 2,

I opened a new line to snag this GNII at Best Buy... my contract on my line isn't due until November. Ill gladly pay the $10 a month for the 'add a line's charge. Or pay ETF up front, its still less that the no-contract price.

etf, 350 vs $240 for the line at 24 mos PLUS getting an additional upgrade. just add the line. i am gonna do it for a back up phone. get best free phone and sell it. (best buy's buy back was great for this) put chip into a $10 go phone. this should about cancel out the cost of the contract.
Go to Radio Shack $199 on att and they trade in phones as well. Plus you get people who actually know what they're talking about
