[GUIDE][CM] Get The Most Out of Your Battery - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

This is my all inclusive guide on how to get the most out of your battery without sacrificing functionality. Specially tailored for the i747.
WARNING: I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING YOU DO TO YOUR PHONE. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.
!!!NANDROID BACKUP!!!
This guide assumes that you're running Cyanogenmod 11 or a custom ROM based on it. It is organized from most practical and user friendly, to more technical and intensive.
The first manner of business is to upload to the latest bootloader/modem, which can be found here: http://invisiblek.org/d2firmware.html
This provides the most stability/support for the latest CM Nightlies.
Simply download the .zip and flash it in your recovery of choice.
Go into "Settings" > "Apps" and delete any apps you don't use anymore.
Go into all apps you DO use, and make sure "Location" and "Notification" settings are either OFF or on according to if you need them or not.
Disable "syncing" in weather apps, news apps, and any other apps that have background syncing enabled.
Disable "WiFi" when not in use.
Disable "Data" when not in use.
Disable "Location" when not in use. (THIS INCLUDES LOCATION REPORTING.)
Disable "Bluetooth" when not in use.
Disable "NFC" when not in use.
Disable "Automatic Backlight"
Manually set brightness to lowest setting.
Set Screen Timeout to 1 minute or less.
Disable "Sync" when not necessary.
Disable "Auto Rotation" when not necessary.
Disable all haptic/sound feedback under "Sound."
Go into "WiFi" settings, press your menu key, and press "Advanced." Be sure that "Scanning always available" is unchecked.
CHARGE YOUR PHONE WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
Download "Greenify" from the Play Store, open it up, and start hibernating every app you don't depend on. DO NOT HIBERNATE MESSAGING APPS.
I personally hibernated every non-system app I had excluding "Google Keyboard."
You have a special feature called "App Ops under your "Privacy" settings.
Press "Privacy Guard." You'll be presented with a list of apps. These apps can be "secured" with a click. Simply press and app you don't want accessing your location settings, and the little grey lock to the right of the app will become white. This will disable the app from using location services.
Third, open up your apps list under Settings > Apps > "All" tab. Cyanogenmod has many apps that the typical user doesn't want/need, and that take up precious RAM and CPU cycles.
You can disable system apps by clicking on them, and then "Disable."
Apps that can be safely disabled include:
Android Keyboard – REPLACE WITH GOOGLE KEYBOARD
Android Live Wallpapers
Basic Daydreams
Black Hole
Browser – REPLACE WITH CHROME BETA
Bubbles
CM Updater
CM Wallpapers
com.android.wallpaper.holospiral
Downloads
Email – Up to you.
Exchange Services – Safe to disable only if you disable Email
Face Unlock
Gallery – REPLACE WITH QUICKPIC
Google Backup Transport – ONLY IF YOU DON'T USE GOOGLE BACKUP
Google One Time Init
Google Partner Setup
Google Text-to-speech Engine – AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION
Magic Smoke Wallpapers
Market Feedback Agent – DISABLES... MARKET FEEDBACK...
Movie Studio
Music Visualization Wallpapers
Phase Beam
Photo Screensavers
Pico TTS - AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION
Setup Wizard
Tags - ???
Terminal Emulator
Themes provider – STUCK W/ DEFAULT THEME
Voice Dialer
I have disabled all of these apps and had no ill consequence. I haven't gone as far as uninstalling them, but you may if you wish.
Download KT's latest kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756776
Flash in recovery. Be sure to wipe Cache and Dalvik before and after!
WHAT YOU DECIDE TO DO WITH THIS KERNEL IS UP TO YOU. YMMV.
Open KTweaker app.
Set governor to "pegasusq" - This is a more conservative governor, and also allows hotplugging.
Undervolt CPU by 75 mV across the board. - YMMV.
Undervolt GPU by 50 mV across the board. - YMMV.
Set GPU Governor to "simple."
Set "Set options on boot" to set with a 20 second delay. (In case something goes awry.)
Reboot.
ETC. TIPS:
- Get any widgets you don't use off your Launcher. They eat battery too.
- Don't use custom launchers with riced out animations. This tears up your GPU, and your battery life will suffer as a result.
- Turn off "Mock Location" in Developer Options.
- DO NOT USE TASK KILLERS!!!
- Disable "Automatic home clock" in the stock "Clock" app.
- Use ART!
- Turn off roaming!
I'm sure I'm forgetting something. I'll update this if I remember anything. Let me know if this has helped you at all. Feel free to add any tips as you see fit.
Give me a thanks if I've helped you out!

Pretty good if I say so myself.
Never disabled LTE.

But the tips are all about disabling services?
I kid, this is a pretty neat start for people experiencing battery issues. I generally recommend also getting a new battery - the Ankers 2200mAh one is legit.

Yeeeah. I wrote the title before I got started haha. They're all optional, of course. Not many people will miss having a random app in their RAM (Greenify solution.) Or disabling location reporting (I hate location reporting.) Or even undervolting, or getting rid of random CRapps.
I did have that Anker battery, but it bloated on me. It was nice while it lasted, though. (About 3 months.)

Mine has lasted 6 months so far, strange. I replaced the stock battery after it stopped holding a charge within the first 8 months of ownership.
Also, on the topic of Greenify, when I used to have it, I found it was draining almost as much battery as the things it was hibernating, since it spent every waking moment shutting the other things off. Have you found that to be the case at all?

My case may have been user error. It isn't rated to take as quick a charge as the stock battery. I was using a 1A 5V power box. I believe it called for a .7A 5V current.
I have; in the case of my keyboard, and Facebook, as well as Google Play services back when I tried out making it a user app. I got rid of the Facebook app and use the mobile site. It works just as well.

I don't have FBApp notifications on, ever. I used it mostly for the interface and the seamless photo upload via Wi-Fi.
But since I started using Quantum, the battery has been significantly better. If the Facebook app becomes stupid enough with the battery, however, might just follow your lead there.

The problem isn't the notifications, it's the services that the app has that run, even if you have notifications, sync, and background services turned off. I hated it.
I used to use Quantum, back when CM 11 didn't have official nightlies. Great ROM and Dev; not bleeding edge enough for me, though.

That's fair, I just started using it last week, because PA3.99 was crapping out in all kinds of fun ways, and I didn't feel like using SlimKat again. I'm trying out ART now, to see how that affects my battery.

It shouldn't be a massive gain, but definitely more fluid and a bit more quick, which let's you get stuff done faster, and the faster you get stuff done, the less time you use the screen, and that takes load off the battery.

Apex Launcher doesn't support ART. :crying:

What about Nova?

it's a bad idea to suggest charging your phone whenever possible... it'll kill the battery imo
just wait till it's low and charge till it's full

Full cycles like that kill the battery just as fast, if not faster. This is a battery life thread.

So... in other words... sacrifice functionality for battery life. I never understand the point of these threads.

Tell me when you're going to use GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC at the same time.
Are you getting directions to McDonalds while you talk to your business client on your Bluetooth headset and paying for your burger with your phone? I didn't think so.
And Sync? Do it manually. What functionality is being lost that can't be toggled in quick settings in half a second? Are you removing any apks, or shutting down any services that wouldn't benefit you again in a couple of clicks?
You're not sacrificing functionality, you're using common sense. Try it sometime.

I use GPS frequently because I use Google Now for commuting, sports, among other interesting tidbits that come up. I also have a Pebble smartwatch that uses Bluetooth. I have no idea why you bother toggling NFC since its only on when the tag triggers it.
And sync is a critical part of my phone as I work in IT and expect hangouts messages or emails at all times of the day. Both my work, friends, and school use technologies that rely on sync, and some of them are time sensitive.
If you don't want to use the features of a smartphone, use common sense and don't buy one. Sorry I don't find your "turn literally every smartphone feature off" guide useful.
Tell me, what exactly do you use your smartphone for?

At the moment, I'm using it to reply to you, and that doesn't require many things to be toggled on at all. I use it to find directions when I need it (I'll turn location on when I need it), to text, call, and do some web surfing and email.
You seemed to have failed to read the rest of the OP, as well. Undervolting? Destroying wakelocks? Custom kernels? ART?
Not everyone is as tied to their phone as you are. This is meant for people like me, who seemed to struggle to make a full day's charge and couldn't seem to for some reason.

[BATTERY]Tips for better battery life

Here i would be presenting a thread in which i will be talking about how to get the most of your battery on our beautiful phones. It is a fact that at this moment of time battery is not that great on the HOX. But hopefully with the tips that i will present here, shall help people get the max out of their battery till we have some custom kernels drop our way. So without further or do i present a few things that you can do to get the most out of your battery.
Tips for better battery life
1) Touch screen sounds and lock screen sounds untick them from Settings-Sound. That causes the audio_out1 wakelock and unfortunately it is here as well on the HOX and drains battery like hell. So untick those so you do not get that massive wakelock
2) If you are using stock rom and have not rooted yet you can use this option to disable bloatware. Go into settings-apps and go into all. There you can select the applications you want to disable. What that does it will not unistall them but freeze them like TB does for rooted phones. It will remove them from the background and from your app screen to. Pretty nice feature if you ask me. Mainly disable your carrier apps and the google ones as well like Play Books, Play Movies and Play Music if you do not use them. Just a small addition to be added thanks to (pnnorth)- If there have been any play store updates to the app, you will need to uninstall the update before it will show the option to disable the app (eg facebook)
3) If you are using Titanium Backup(i always recommend to get the Pro version) you can uninstall those apps or freeze them if you like. For me i personally would uninstall them as they do not have any use for me.
4) If you are at home and you want to browse the net on your phone always make sure you use Wifi. It is a no brainer that wifi drains less battery than 3G. So always have your mobile data in settings as off and just use wifi. When you are out and about though make sure you have wifi off and use your mobile data on your phone instead. Because if you have wifi on as well it will try and scan for the available networks it can pick up and that causes drainage on your battery. Have that off when you go out.
5) Regarding brightness. Make sure you either have it on low settings or auto. It is a fact that if you have max brightness for your display that is a battery killer as well. Settings-display-brightness and just adjust from there.
6) Regarding task killer apps or battery saving apps like Juice Defender i recommend to stay away from those. Those apps consume more battery than they are suppose to be saving. Regarding task killers it is NOT recommended to kill apps because Android does that for you anyway. Just make sure you the application that you use, you always use the back button to exit the app or just go into multitask and swipe it away.
7) If you are rooted make sure you fully charge your phone and then in recovery or from Leedroid tweaks if you are using that make sure you wipe battery stats. That always helps as well.
8) Regarding sync your accounts. Now i have mine on autosync. From reading around having to sync your email account and facebook and twitter and whatever account you have syncing that drains battery. Now you can do two things. One either set the option to have those on manual sync or if you do not use facebook then uninstall it. But to be honest i have everything on autosync and still get good battery so it is down to user preference really. But for those interested go into settings-accounts and sync and adjust to your choosing.
9) Switch to gsm/2g only instead of wcdma/3g in settings >mobile network >Network Mode. Specially if you're not planning to use any 3g internet/mms features. (thanks to Gdelrosario)
10) Try to avoid ad supported apps. A research showed that in apps where there is adds, 70% of the power use comes from downloading and managing those adds to your screen. 30sec use of an app that uses adds, might drain your fully charged battery 0.35%-0.70%. Research link found here (thanks to Tont0)
11) Settings > Developer options > Windows animation scale > "Animation is OFF".
12) Mentioned this above but will re-post here again with a bit more detail. (thanks to AndroidGX) If you have multiple mail accounts, turn off auto-sync feature to refresh them manually. Settings > Accounts & sync > Auto-sync : [UNTICK]
Note: this will works also for any app like Facebook, Twitter, Beautiful Widget, etc..
13) Disabling the options for louder ringtone when inside a pocket and stopping the ringtone when picking up the device might also help. (thanks to Hardstuffmuc)
14) Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep : "Only when plugged in". That way wifi will not be on all the time and that means saving bit of juice in the process
LINKS:
*Link to the thread for BetterBatteryStats is below. Please install that app as it will help you to identify what app consumes your battery when you have screen off.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
*Another great thread to have a look at is the Rom Cleaner by Patrics83. What it does it basically gives you this option : Will remove as much as possible without breaking HTC Sense Launcher and Widgets! This is the best way to come close to a no-sense ROM and still use HTC Sense!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1589949
That is it for now. I will be updating this thread when i come across more battery saving tips. For now if anyone has anymore please post them and i will add them to the OP and give a thanks to you by adding your name next to the tip.
Was going to compile a list of apps that are safe to disable (for non-rooted users) and what to freeze uninstall (for rooted users). But since there is Rom Cleaner thread by Patrics83 as i have stated above you are probably best to go to his thread here where you can use his script and follow the guide on OP. This is script is for rooted users.
There also you can find a list of applications that is safe to disable for all those who are non rooted. Settings-apps and then go into all apps. As pointed out in first post tip 2 first if the application you are trying to disable has been updated first uninstall the updates and then disable the app
That is it for now more will follow
6) Regarding task killer apps or battery saving apps like Juice Defender i recommend to stay away from those. Those apps consume more battery than they are suppose to be saving. Regarding task killers it is NOT recommended to kill apps because Android does that for you anyway. Just make sure you the application that you use, you always use the back button to exit the app or just go into multitask and swipe it away.

This is not a task killer. Also the apps are not aktive in backgraound, they are hibernatet. If you want to kill a task go to task manager.

Juice Defender=Battery Saving App = Not so much of a battery saving app
And Maps, and even facebook are active in the background my friend. by disabling them you are kinda like freezing them anyway. And yes if you read above if you want to kill a task or terminate an app i did mention that you can do that through Task manager. Or even by going into multi tasking app and swiping the one that you do not use anymore exits the app my friend
Trust me i done my research before posting this thread. But i am also open to correcting something if i am wrong.
Just a small addition to point 2) - If there have been any play store updates to the app, you will need to uninstall the update before it will show the option to disable the app (eg facebook)

I already made another thread posting this one, but as I noticed there is one where to gather some common tips, I might as well add it here.

Very good thread. I tend to do most of what is mentioned anyway. As soon I got the phone I was busy tweaking the settings so that I could get the maximum power out of the battery. I'm not considered a heavy user anyway so it typically lasts 2-3 days.
you can also add to switch to gsm/2g only instead of wcdma/3g in settings >mobile network >Network Mode
specially if you're not planning to use any 3g internet/mms features
Cheers guys...Any tips that we can get i can add them all to the OP so that way we can have one thread which has everything. That way no need for clutter of threads regarding on how to improve battery life people can come here and read and discuss. Thank you guys i really appreciate your help
Added the new tips to the OP. Thanks

wiping battery stats is done when reaching 100% charge and holds nothing but the useage of apps and does nothing to calibrate or improve battery life.
heres a quote to back this up.
Deleting this file will basically wipe your battery usage reports, which is done anyways automatically when the phone is fully charged (hence you'll see a clear list when you reach a full charge). "Deleting it is not going to do anything to make your more device more fantastic and wonderful".

i will be honest with you. When i had my galaxy s2 and i had juice defender on that drained more battery than it was suppose to be saving. I could find you posts from users and kernel developers that i know from the s2 forums that advice against it. It is down to you to try and test but from my own testings i would advice against using them

Thanks for the reply. My question was more general. Do you mean that there are no good battery apps?
How can we tel which apps support ads? I keep getting notifications in my status bar from random sites how can I stop that.
Thank you

True. You do have a point. but also on the other hand there has been people that saying by wiping battery stats that deletes the battery history makes everything start fresh as you mentioned above. What i am trying to get maybe it works maybe it does not. But one thing i know from my own experience by deleting those battery stats did help a bit on my battery. Hence why i posted that in the OP.

Like i said mate. In general i have not bothered with battery apps. For me they eat more battery than they are suppose to be saving. If you follow my guide and also search on xda to find more threads like mine most will say that battery apps really do nothing..But it is down to you at the end of the day.

That is easy to figure out. Most of the times it will be all the free apps in the market. If you are rooted install ADaway and that will install the hosts on your phone and will block those ads.

Optimization that works for people, What has made your experience good?

Ok we are about a week in and some of us have had good success and some bad with our phones.
So for those who have had good success by making changes, what has made your experience better??
For me here are a few things I have done.
I use Nova launcher, package disabler (EZ DISABLER), google keyboard and SD maid to keep it clean for when it gets dirty. So far its been good. Also use metal for Facebook and twitter.
I put animations from 1 to .5 and turned on force 2D GPU. Not too sure about the last one, but trying it.
AMOLED black theme all around, google keyboard, animations to .5x, package disabler pro to disable tons of crap, action launcher 3 (usually a Nova prime guy, but change of pace), Swipe app instead of Facebook & Messenger (easiest and biggest difference on any phone).
Should we get a list going of packages disabled? I'll link my export below from Package Disabler Premium. Please note that I do not use Android Pay, VR or Gear. So, if you use those don't copy mine exactly as I have those disabled along with about 40 other packages. I know a lot more can be disabled, but I'm a little gun shy so I don't "break" anything important as far as functionality. I would be curious to see others' exports.
Other than that, I moved to .5 animations. I am also pretty religious to not let apps "stay awake" that I use semi-regularly by putting them to sleep through the built in battery maintenance tool.
Syncing emails every 4 hours. I let my other accounts sync as normal regarding photos, documents and contacts (Samsung, Gmail and OneDrive).
I also leave bluetooth off unless I need it (mostly wireless headphones for an hour per day). Same for NFC and I leave the always on feature off (but noticed with it on or off yields little to no difference regarding battery life).
Everything is smooth as butter for me and I am getting great screen off time of less than 1% per hour battery drain. On schedule for about 5 hours of on screen time today.
Disabled Packages export: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ajwyu5YpXo8VnyywF6caYaVEc3nL

Same really, animations at .5, black theme, Large display scale, extra small font.
On thing i noticed with Nova Launch and animation scaling, make sure you go into Nova and change its own scaling to "default" if you change the scaling in developer options. On mine, Nova was set to "fast" which was actually slower and over riding the .5 scaling I had set.

Good list, I have many of the same but you have more. I'll have to really compare when i get home. Taking about the always on display, last night it was using about 152 mb of RAM seems high. I still left it on but it's on a time schedule. So far battery has been decent. But last night my phone was charged to 100% and after 7 hrs of sleeping it was at 85%. So also not sure why it used that much. But still tinkering.

Good deal, thanks. Looks like I was down to 0.5% per hour loss over night. Went down 3% in 6 hours.

I did a factory reset last night and did bunch of tweaks to the notification settings. It gets a better result. Two nights ago with only 4 hours of sleep it went from 100 to 94. Last night with 6 hours of sleep it only went down by 4%. Now I have not used the EZDisabler to disable bloats, don't know if I will. Although I don't have AO on but I do have Night Clock on.

Mine has been good, but lost 15% over 7 hrs last night while asleep. Been messing with It a lot and may have messed something up. I gotta remember what I changed yesterday. Lol. Always like that with a new phone. Once I figure out what I like may just reset to what I like and be good with it
After disabling a lot of ****, flight mode and wifi off and still lose 3-4% every 6-8 hours... bloody hell

I would be ok with 3 or 4% in 6 to 8 hrs if phone asleep. Now 3 or 4 % every hr when not in use is no bueno!
Have done nothing yet and after 8 hours (at night) im down 3-4%. My last 2 phones have been like that too so im assuming its normal. Sometimes disabling features (bloat) can actually increase your battery usage.
Keeps getting better for me. Lost 2% while asleep for 6.5 hours. All settings the same and same disabled bloat as mentioned in early post.

what theme is that? from the Samsung app store? TIA
APEX Launcher Pro/SD Maid Pro/Package Disabler Pro+,S-Note side-loaded & a black theme .
My set-up stays fairly constant from one phone to the next.
I don't go into it w/battery savings in mind,I disable the junk/Cheetah Mobile s***ware/etc..... & forget about it.
I'm good w/battery life so far, but, just for the heck of it,I did look at the stats yesterday:
While I had plenty of juice left after 14 hrs,I did notice my biggest user was the Google app @ 28%,which was odd considering I use my phone sparingly during a typical workday & have little to no usage for OK GOOGLE & the like. So,my only tweaks to battery so far are optimizing the Google app & disabling (partially) the Device Maintenance app (w/Package Disabler Pro+).

I'm following the note 7 like a hawk as well. Had a note 4 and went to the 6p and I'm ready to come back to Samsung. Passed on my Note 4 to a relative and running TEKHD rom its perfect. I'm still shocked how good that device is. Everyday I check all the Note 7 forums including the carrier versions for all updated news to make sure I know of all the issues with the device as well as current of developments. I'm thinking about picking up the device towards Black Friday but I'll probably give in before then.

Hi guys!
I'm from the S6 & maybe looking forward to getting the Note 7 if it ever comes to France/Europe... (The Note 5 didn't somehow)
I just want to share with you my few things I did to improve my perf & autonomy.
1) Like you, changed the animations speed, but from 1 to 0.25
2) Cutsom ROM (Root included) + Kernel to get the biggest of the job I can't do myself done (of course, this point is vast & will vary according to what choices you make)
3) Installed Greenify, Power nap (through Xposed that came with the ROM), Amplify, & Purify (Root required for better features).
- Notice that Purify & Greenifyalmost make the same task, but in the free versions, I think Purify is + powerful & gets more features: you get total power over the notifications, you can archive them into a single notif folder, or hide them, you can purify apps running, the same way Greenify does, for each app you want, & there is a Bloatware removal tool included, which I used to delete permanently many useless apps.
- Power nap & Amplify make a huge job to reduce dramaticaly the impact of services & wakelocks on the battery, I think this is what makes your battery still going down while the phone should sleep...
4) Black wallpaper too
5) There is another app which seems to be nice & wide on the settings, named L Speed (PlayStore), don't really know what difference it makes, I didn't test it separatly...
6) If you want better control over the permissions of every apps, notably the boot & privacy settings, there is AppOpsXposed in Xposed or PMP (Protect My Privacy) from the Carnegie Insitute (PlyStore)
7) A tasker app, like Automate , AutomateIt , Macrodroid or Tasker (not free), that I use mainly to put the plane mode & low brightness of screen at night, & skip in the morning, then you can set some amazing tasks with these, I highly recommand it if you want your device to proudly be called a Smart²-phone
That's pretty much it, I'm new on the XDA forum, even if I've read it for a long time without posting anything, here is my 1st intervention! Hope it helped,
Cheers :highfive:

I hear ya, once I heard the rumors about a possible 128gb/6gb Note 7 being released in China I convinced myself I would wait and see if it would be possible to import it (if would work on our networks here etc). But, I only made it till 5 days before launch day in US lol. Good luck to ya!

I seen an article today somewhere like Android Authority about there will be no Note 7 with 128GB and 6GB RAM for China. I've got 9 days to wait before my Note 7 arrives but I don't think an extra 2GB RAM is anything to wait for... A new CPU then yes sure but not for just two extra gigs of RAM that will probably do nothing anyway.

Galaxy S10+ Battery Optimisation guide

The guide will not be updated:
I'm not going to update this guide or answer any question anymore.
Mod Edit: Content in violation of Forum Rules (disrespectful, insulting, rude) with no content related to this guide, removed
Corv0 said:
Many users have asked more details on how I achieved my battery life results, this guide will cover some basic settings and behaviors that are proven or supposed to reduce energy consumption, no root involved.
Power results to expect:
7-9h SoT: Mainly 4G, mid to max brightness, navigation applications and outdoors utilities.
9-11h SoT: Your average work day, 50% max brightness and 4G, 50% half brightness or less on WiFi, mainly video playing, communication and web browsing applications.
11-14h SoT: Same as above but with lowered screen brightness and no 4G.
Gaming applications automatically forfeit any battery report due to too many variables. I can’t include them, but your gaming time will certainly last longer if you follow everything.
According to what has been seen on forums, Snapdragon versions seem to perform considerably worse than Exynos ones regarding power consumption and they should be expected to not last as much, I’m still waiting to see a side by side battery test between the two, please mention your model when posting screenshots.
Initial Setup
Just a few options here:
Avoid restoring backups from older/previous devices, Google’s app data restoring system has been known to permanently influence Play Services’ drain.
Smart Switch is also bugged, do not use it, everyone saw better results by skipping it.
Set up as new and import only what you need.
Theme
Night Theme
Black/Night themes will reduce power consumption without doubt while helping your AMOLED maintain quality for the future, your Quickpanel has a simple shortcut to enable Night mode system-wide and on supported Samsung applications, keep it on all the time if possible.
Quickpanel
Your Quickpanel is not actually black in Night mode (85% black), it also forces your device to drop frames every time it is summoned by blurring the background, a very expensive and unnecessary effect.
Download Good Lock from the Galaxy store
Open QuickStar, set BG Color to black (make sure to run the bar to the darkest end) and disable Blur effect.
Launcher
As smooth and elegant as OneUI Home can look, it is stupidly heavy on the GPU, especially when launching the app drawer (unnecessary blur effect again), you can see Nova and OneUI Home compared:
Nova: No frames dropped
OneUI: Dropping frames EVERY single time the drawer is summoned, keeps dropping several scrolls later too.
You can make Nova look exactly the same as stock OneUI while having more features and better performance.
Background wallpapers
Darker wallpapers will help, but overall no big deal.
Animated wallpapers are expensive, you’re not going to stare at them, keep your wallpapers static and your animations in the gallery.
Connections
More connection settings: Disable Nearby device scanning, it’s mostly used to push ads whenever you’re around malls and shops.
Private DNS: Set your DNS to 1dot1dot1dot.cloudflare-dns.com, Cloudflare’s DNS will greatly improve your browsing speeds. This setting will also make it harder for Google to track you around the web, you will be blacklisted from Google Opinion Rewards by keeping it on, if you do not use Google Opinion Rewards then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
Location services
Biometrics and Security, Location, disable everything under Improve accuracy, you don’t need this on this phone, nobody does, modern GPS systems are already accurate enough indoors to not justify having to scan for Wifi SSIDs or Bluetooth even when they're off.
Audio
Dolby Atmos requires some additional processing to handle the extra channels, if you do not hear any quality difference, keep it off.
Display
FHD+ (2280 x 1080) and WQHD+ (3040 x 1440) will look exactly the same to the untrained eye.
WQHD+ will to make your GPU worry about 23% more pixels, it will result in:
-30min off your average SoT day
-25% less autonomy in 3D games
I personally couldn’t go back to 1080p after upgrading all my displays. All my SoT screenshots have been taken on 1440p settings.
Apps
Most apps can be disabled from Settings, Apps, for apps that can’t be disabled that way, I recommend using this guide if you are unfamiliar with Adhell.
After disabling everything related to Facebook (use alternative apps if you really need it), do not keep duplicate active services that do the same kind of tasks;
If you are using Gboard as keyboard, disable Samsung Keyboard and Keyboard Neural beta
If you are not using OneUI Home then disable OneIU Home and Bixby Home.
You can safely disable Bixby itself if you prefer Google Assistant or no assistant at all.
You can apply the same principle to all the system apps you think aren’t useful to you, this will greatly reduce RAM usage and CPU wakelocks/alarms.
Battery Monitors
They’re not free to use, they drain energy by logging, everything does.
Unless you’re specifically checking for rogue apps attacking your battery, get rid of Accubattery or similar apps.
Keyboard
The two best keyboards I know are Gboard and Samsung keyboard, I do not like and cannot recommend any other.
Your keyboard should also be black at all times, that will result in at least 30% less power waste when typing, Gboard and Samsung Keyboard have their own themes for that.
Disable anything that makes your buttons clicking sounds or vibrations, it’s unnecessary, energy expensive and has been demonstrated to not improve your typing performance in any way.
Device Care
Good utility, but you shouldn’t run it manually and you shouldn’t kill apps with it, instead:
Enable Auto optimisation, set it some-when during your sleep.
Enable Auto restart, no Operating System is immune to bugs manifesting by staying on for too long, make your device restart itself at least every 3 days, when you sleep, and at least 10 minutes after auto optimisation is supposed to run.
Disable Security, Samsung is getting paid to put this McAfee crap in their firmware, in the EU it will be disabled by default since it is also a tracker not initially included in any other contract from Samsung.
If you accidentally enable it, go to Apps, look for Device Security, and wipe data, that will disable it.
Android does not need an Antivirus, you will not get malware unless you install modified apps with unofficial signatures (the Play Store still has malware too, stay away from shady apps), if you often try third party apps from the outside, make sure your apks are clean by uploading them to www.virustotal.com.
If you suspect your phone has been infected and you can’t identify the package, install a better Antivirus software such as Bitdefender or Avira, but I don’t recommend keeping them installed unless you are playing with high risk applications all the time.
Sleeping apps
Sleeping apps puts unused (not in your multitasker) apps to sleep, alike pressing X on a desktop Operating System.
Since most apps are badly optimised and using Android’s great RAM management to keep them alive only results in more wakelocks and drain, Samsung deserves a lot of respect for letting us do this without third party apps such as Brevent or Greenify.
You need to have Outlook installed on your phone to follow those annoying work e-mails, but you’re tired of notifications? Put it to sleep.
Put every app to sleep unless:
You need notifications from it
You use it often
Animations
Animations are expensive and make your system appear slower, reducing them will help by making your GPU draw less frames.
They can be sped up or disabled from Developer options, I recommend .5x for a good balance, to enable developer options:
Settings, about phone, software information, repeatedly tap on Build number until you magically become a developer.
Additional animations can be removed by enabling Reduce animations in Advanced features and Remove Animations in Accessibility, Visibility enhancements.
Ad-blocking
If you are using Adhell, that’s your best adblocker for Knox devices.
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/hosts is the best collection of hosts, make sure your Adhell is whitelisting Analytics domains, you will notice these domains being spammed under “Domains blocked in past 24 hours”, Android will keep trying to reach those domains until they are whitelisted.
If you don’t want to use Adhell for whatever reason, Blokada is an excellent VPN-based adblocker that is way less invasive and does not seem to impact battery, use it with the recommended hosts and keep it on at all times, enable always on if you notice it getting killed often.

@dominicstg2 It might not work well in every region, in that case you can just skip it.
A great alternative to facebook is Face Slim
some great tips there thank you
so if you are struggling battery life wise should you go from QHD to FHD or does it make no real difference? and would you say having a blue wallpaper would drain a lot more than a black wallpaper?

FHD will definitely help but I find vision quality to be a higher priority over half an hour or more of battery per full cycle, it's totally up to you.
Blue wallpapers will in theory drain more than any other colour, this Dynamic AMOLED's blue subpixel is much larger than the others, but you won't feel the difference unless you stay still on your home page for long periods of time.
Also one small correction if I may. The correct DNS should be 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com
(you forgot the last 1 at the end).

I'm not sure about the "sync in a google app" as even going thru parameters (without opening any app, above all a google one), it keeps re enabling itself. I suspect that the S10 os is buggy (this android version or samsung implementation ??) or embedded with hidden (unreachable) parameters.

So, it's ok to let the Location "ON" and just disable everything under "improve accuracy"? The battery draining isn't significant for location "on" or "off"?
I remember in Oreo we had the opportunity to set it on battery saving.

How do I get good battery life

Hi guys,
So around 1 month ago now, I got myself hands on a Note10+ (N975F)
I have been noticing screen off time drain, it is around 1.8% for me. I have tried using greenify, optimizing the settings, battery saving mode etc.
It hasn't really been working for me. Screen off time is really important for me, even more than screen on time.
So i wanted to know, how could I maximize the battery life of my Note10+? Is there like a custom rom you could recommend, like Lineage or dr ketan?
Knox is already tripped bcz of the previous owner, so that is no problem. Or a other custom rom or just with rooting something.
If you know anything, I would appreciate it if you could tell me,
Kind regards,
Crewz
First, you can select apps that you dont require to be always running, to be dormant, look for this option in settings, also you can install galaxy labs, there is a similar option there also, I disabled several apps via CCSWE, that have the undesirable behavior of being always running and accesing internet, such as facebook, chrome, youtube, operator apps, etc, also, with CCSWE you can deprive apps of certain undesired services that eat batt, this a process that takes some time, as you use the device, you can obseve and decide what to disable, to uninstall, or control via ccswe, I have my note 10+ since Sept 6 2019 and the battery lasts thru the whole day, I get some 7 hrs SOT on normal std use, when I play intensive games,, that is another diferent thing

Hey thank you for taking the time to help me. I have tried what you said, I went into settings and I went through my apps and selected those that don't need to run in the background. I also downloaded CCSWE from the playstore, i saw like 500 applications, but only disable or clear data from the application.
Are there any other device settings you recommend changing?
Thanks for your time.
Decide if you want to root it, if so you'll have many more options and tools to work with.
Otherwise get PD MDM to block apks from running at boot and disable them.
Use Samsung Device Manager and set to Optimized in main window. Toggle on fast charging but don't enable any other off the top 3 dot menu. You can then disable that app too. 3rd party power management apps including Samsung's can screw it up. Cloud apps, Goggle Backup Transport/Backup Framework are big offenders on my stock 10+
Disable Google, Samsung and any carrier feedback.
To hell with Bixby except Bixby Vision/Vision Framework which are needed by the cam for full functionality.
Play with it.

Not sure what you mean with Google / Samsung feedback.

Don't disable Bixby Framework either.
The feedback options are buried in settings, you'll run into them.
I'm not rooted so I don't spend much time looking at what I could do. You do have real time cpu/power usage capabilities with it for weeding out the hogs... for one thing.

Hmmm, can't really find those feedback options. I will enable the framework again.
I guess I will root when it is really needed to. First let's see what I can do without.

Hey thanks for your reply. I would want to root it, I am not sure how. I have owned a oneplus 7 pro where it was much easier to do.
If I would root, what other options and tools could I use?
Also, I did those settings things from the battery, thank you.
Not sure what you mean with Google / Samsung feedback.
For bixby I disabled almost everything except vision and routines.

In the Goggle and Samsung account settings.
If it's a carrier phone one of the advanced network settings. Carrier phone; disable remote support, updates (unless you want an update), and all their software.
Keep Samsung account and apps related to Galaxy Store/Themes as you want to be able to download themes, icon packs and apps from there.
Excellent free icon packs... and the Good Lock family of apps.

Should be about 1% when sleeping with AOD on.
Keep the AOD to a bare minimum though ie just a clock no images.

Galaxy labs, Battery Tracker is useful.
See if Google Backup Transport or Framework are the culprits. If already package blocked clear their data and the data on Goggle Play Services ie gms.
It can be hard to ferret out as many apks simply are thrown together under Android Services.
Worse some Google apps falsely show under Transport etc even when its blocked. That why you clear the data of gms.
Use the factory load of Samsung Device Manager to globally clean caches. Reboots seldom help.
Turn off location, bt and wifi if not using.
Do not let Playstore run or Samsung updates unless your using them.
When running clean its ide current with screen on is typically in the 100-200 ma range. A few lower and higher. If you're getting a lot of spikes 400 ma and above at idle something is using a lot of the cpu resources...

So I installed Galaxy Labs and Battery Tracker.
I noticed that Google Foto's was on top with 7.1%.
Followed was whatsapp with 6.3%
And google play service was 3.78%
I haven't seen Google Backup Transport in the list.
Would there be like a way to turn off location automaticly when I am not using it, for example that it would only turn on for google maps or something?
Thanks for your time!

If you leave locations on it's a whore to a lot of apps including Google. Looks like you found your prime suspects.
Lol, WhatsApp never runs here same with FB.

Alright i'll see how that goes. Also, I got myself the original wireless charger from samsung today.
Would it be okay if I just putted it down on it whenever I am at my desk? I mean battery wize.

Question Issues Keeping Background Apps Running

Anyone else having issues with keeping apps running in the background? I have a couple apps (one for doorbell camera and one for outdoor security cameras) that will only stay active for a short time and provide notifications on my phone when motion was detected. I can open one of the apps after not getting any notifications for a long period and then I will get all the notifications that never came through.
I have done all the normal steps of making sure the battery optimization was turned off for these apps and turning off all data restrictions with no luck. I had several go around with TCL support and exhausted their possible solutions. The same doorbell app worked fine on my old Pixel so I am pretty sure it isn't the apps.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I wondered about that. Have you experienced any major issues with the Android 12 beta? I may have to give that a try. Thanks!

I tried the beta 3, but my phone was not listed with the CU regulatory Number, whatever that is. I cant go back to 11 and I dont know if ill be able to go forward. But it did solve the notification issues.
Welcome to XDA
Power management destroyer of worlds
Developer options>standby apps
All buckets should show as active otherwise power management is enabled!
You can't change that setting here. If you can change a bucket state and get it to take (close Developer options/reopen) then again power management has been enabled.

One method I think is working without upgrading to Android 12 is to disable the "Smart Manager" app via adb
You can download sdk platform-tools and run command
adb shell
pm disable-user com.tct.onetouchbooster
You do lose out on accessing some battery options, though, since it's integrated into the app, but I don't mind it. Hope it helps
I have an unlocked T810S that I'm using here in the USA with Cricket Wireless (an AT&T MVNO). My phone has Android 11, and the notification issues are driving me crazy. I don't yet see any updates for Android 12, so who knows when I can get that.
I saw what @rickywangca did, and did something similar. From my Linux box:
Code:
adb shell
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.tct.onetouchbooster
And that uninstalled the "Smart Manager" application. I'm happy to have that thing gone, but I still have notification issues that I can't figure out.
For the apps in question, I added them to do "do not optimize" battery list, but that didn't seem to help. One app is configured to give me a daily notification, but I almost never receive it. I actually got the notification one day and was surprised.
Any other tips or ideas on dealing with the notification issue? Do I need to clear something else out related to the onetouchbooster "Smart Manager"?

Is global power management active?
Developer options>standby apps, all buckets should show as active otherwise global power management is active. It will cause erratic behaviors. It's not needed or desirable, it never did work well. It can not be disable here though.
Example: how its controls appear on a Samsung N10+ in Device Care, battery, it's usually a little buried but it's there. You'll find something similar to this. It's part of the core Android system.
These settings will cause trouble...

This T810S TCL 20 Pro 5G is an awesome phone, but the lack of notifications drives me crazy.
I looked at my Developer Options, trying to see something similar to what you have on that Samsung, and I see these, which appear to be inactive.
"Adaptive notification priority"
"Adaptive notification ranking"
But when I go to my Inactive Apps list, I see a variety of different "App standby state" values. It appears that I can change some of them here to have the different values of:
"ACTIVE", "WORKING_SET", "FREQUENT", "RARE", "RESTRICTED".
Which value should I choose if I want the app to stay active and send me notifications?
Here's a screen grab of what I see:
Oh how badly I just want to receive notifications from my applications, to make my phone fully functional. I get notifications from certain apps like gmail, telegram and facebook, but not from apps that I want like the LG ThinQ app, and Lightning Pro.

In general...
Power management with the bucket states and all of that is a native Android service. Part of battery management. You can't disable in Developer options but you can tell if it's active there. You can use it to verify that you have disabled though.
Samsung modifies their UI heavily. The settings they use may be similar to other brands, Pixels being the "purest" version of Android. In Pixels the controls for that are in battery care in settings, I think (I never owned a Pixel). Terms like Adaptive battery or Battery saver may be the ones thst switch it on/off. Verity it then with the Standby Apps status.
There is a way to set exceptions to Adaptive battery and that may work too. I never used it or if I did it failed to work properly in one way or another... it's been years. I ended up turning the whole mess off and using other methods to increase my SOT.
The best way to learn how your Android works is to play with it. Go through all the settings and play with them when you have time. Like a game, it's sort of fun. Do Google searches for specific issues; it doesn't have to be that specific model or even brand. Androids are similar across Android flavors and OS versions to a greater or lesser extent. Learn by reading about them. That's all I do and eventually track down the issue. The more you do this, the better and faster you get at it. Find/get the tools you need to better understand what's happening like a logging firewall, battery trackers etc.
I see you have social media and sales apps installed. I never do this. If I need to access them I login to them through Brave browser only.
They tend to consume excessive battery and are multi vector security threats*. They can also cause problems by changing hidden user settings which could have global consequences. You are what you load. At the very least not having any trashware makes troubleshooting easier and yields a better running Android. Disabling the questionable app when not in use is another option I sometimes use if I really need it.
*Just because it's on Playstore doesn't mean it's safe. Any app that updates outside of Playstore could download a trojan payload to what appeared to be a safe app. Any app that has internet access is a potential security threat. I firewall block all that don't absolutely need it and don't update any unless there's a good reason to.
