Anyone want to help me get more in to this ROM hobby thing? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I have learned all I can by reading. I need to play on a computer. DL some programs and dive in. Building my own ROM is a long way off, or assisting build one, is the direction im heading.
#1 don't assume I know anything
#2 im getting a laptop. I have kids and the computer is downstairs. Every time I try and get down there, im called back up.
#3 there are so many programs I don't know where to start. I have started on my main computer. And now I have so many things i don't know where to start. Eclipse, ADB, 7 zip, kitchen, cygwin, Java .. And i don't even remember what else.
So i think I'd like to mess with one program at a time and learn one aspect at a time. Don't advise, "download this or that" . Pick the program you recommend.
So I would like to download a stock ROM and start deleting crap. Start there. Im more in the mindset of smoothest and fast and better battery. As opposed to. Bells and whistles that seem cool, but i never end up using.
Please advise THANK YOU

Start with laptop. Id like to get a laptop that is mostly for this. I'm sure I'll check email and web, but that is it. Id like to stay as cheap as possible. I've got a pretty good Windows 7 64 bit already for my pictures and all heavy duty tasks.
So staying with 7. Will the "core 2 Duo" cut the mustard? Or do i need to get a i3 or i5.
6 g RAM ok?
Seems like i can go Duo for $200 and the i3 will be $325. Im cheap, but i hate slow too! Lol
Bells and whistles not necessary! Lol

I would stick with an i3 or higher just for some extra speed but a duo will do the job the rig i have when i have time for theming is a i5 with 16 gb ram and 4tb hard drives granted i do grafic work on it you just don't want a box that will start boggling down on you.

I have been thinking about dipping into the rom world myself as of late my taste is a clean stock rom with mild theming to make it look nicer than stock. But let me know if you need any help I'm thinking it may be time for a new hobby

small man..... once you get the hang its easy..... I like to get the big apks done first like framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk.... then go from there..... secPhone.apk and secContacts.apk are the most time consuming. ... the hex colors of my rom are 00ff00 and a100ff.... start there and build off them...
I like to test before I release stuff that is why it takes me a while to get stuff out... but as you see it works most of the time. . Lol.....
Thanks,

Gimp is cool cause for me at least it's easier to use. And free. I download whatever rom I am using to theme.

I've got some things already set up at home, i was going to piddle until then... I have sone programs installed, just don't know where to start.

I think i need to at least get a i3 processor.
I told the wife i was getting it strictly for this. She said i should have lied to her and told her something else. Lol!

Pick a guide, I'll stumble along and follow it

The only guides I used were for rooting and smali edits. I originally started with a mod that Tommy Tomatoe told me I could do where I changed the font to roboto. I only used gimp and 7zip for that. That was on the OG Evo.

Teacher...

Okay I've been a little nervous to ask this in spite of the answers I may get, but I'm going to ask anyway. What exactly would I need to know to make my own ROM, tweaks, themes, hacks, and what not? I've taken 2 C++ courses although that was high school and 1 java course. I'm really interested in this, and if anyone who knows what there doing would take me under there wing to teach me. I thank anyone for any answer in advance.

Well if you want to get started I would say the easiest way would be to get an aio like mine here (There are others as well). Get your PC setup so you can decompile and compile apks and jars. Once you have that setup, I would start by looking around in the folders that it decompiles. This will help you learn where things are and how the apks work.
If you want to do theming you would need to know xml, how to edit images, and knowing java is always a plus.
Once you know where things are and feel comfortable editing apks, Then I would start learning the other stuff. ROM making, mod making, and tweaking will all get easier if you understand how the phone works.
Hope that helps get you started. Let me know if I can help you out with anything.
Shoot me questions if they pop up, can't always get back right away but I'll always try to help. Its been said before and sounds cliche, but read up. And I mean ALL over the net. The amount you learn troubleshooting your own problems as they arise(error messages etc) are invaluable and unfortunately can't be taught.
But for the other stuff, hit most of us up and you'll find help. Think I can speak for he majority of us on that one.

This is what I love about the xda community.... everyone so helpful I wish to build my own ROM someday too! I wanna take an android programming class but current college I'm attending doesn't offer it and I tried learning on my own but never could get android SDK or eclipse to install my old laptop.... gots me a way better Asus now and I always help with anything I know but that's simple stuff like making bootanimations, where stuff goes in the ROMs ( but I don't know how to make my own), I'm always experimenting with my build.prop and other tweaks til I soft brick and have to dirty flash my phone, I flash to different carriers, different prls, etc.... just simple stuff I'll gladly help. If asked I'll be a tester.... but I can't quit build my own rom

Google search will always be there for you when most needed
Ya googling only can take you so far. Not the same as an actual Mentor. If that were the case we wouldnt even have schools anymore we would just tell our kids. "Hey google it!" And educational systems would be pointless....
Thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it, so when I do have questions I can't find the answers to I am happy to have people I can go to. Although I have to put off until I get my own laptop around Christmas... soo you won't be getting anything from me for a while lol

No problem...if you need links to anything im probably your guy, I subscribe to all threads that I feel are important (content wise)
For example, this thread shows how to odex APKs (apps). Same method can be applied for odexing frameworks files
I love being self sufficient to my phone, but it's hard. I barely know anything so far.

+1 on learning java, then maybe some android SDKs, along with Eclipse software. You learn all this, your well on your way. Java will definitely take the longest to learn.

You can go to googles Dev site and watch the countless tutorials on android development. Also YouTube has toms of mini series covering all aspects of a android development if you are a visual learner I would highly recommend watching these series. Try to find the newest set possible. ICS or newer as the api has changed drastically and so has the adtt plugin for eclipse. Also you can find the eBook beginning android development in PDF form its pretty good and is also based on ICS and newer. Between all that you should be able to pick it up.

Definitely something weird with your reading...
If you get Folder Size Chart from Play Store it will show you the breakdown. This is mine:
Its a bit borked with the stupid 0 folder... If you delete something you may have to delete it from both places to make it actually go away. I use it to find rogue files though. Works very well.

Well hopefully you don't have to format again in the future. I use Folder Size Chart whenever my internal is getting low and go through and clear out the big items, its quite handy. I use a similar program on Windows when I have done a bit too much downloading and filled up the terabytes lol.
I use Space Monger on Windows. Theres a couple apps that are similar to that as well.
I like the graphical layout it uses and it lets you see what is the large stuff regardless of how deep its burried in a folder tree.

I might have to check that out - I was using Disk Size Manager with a paid license but I lost the license file somewhere and I won't pay 30 bucks for FolderSizes.
Well, scratch that!
You can still download either an old version or the paid trial, (didn't realize it went to paid. Used to be freeware) but they are going out of business so Space Monger is no more.
There are other programs like it though. Ill try to look around for a freeware one.

You have to know how to decompile, make changes, then recompile. Not only that, extensive knowledge of framework would help. Then test your work, May or may not be compatible or even work at all.

No, I think lockscreens are part the framework. There are lock screen apps you can download, but most are battery hogs, and probably not what your wanting. I didn't have the time either. Java is kinda confusing to learn also, much less the rest of it.
