HTC One (M8) Unlocked vs Developer Edition - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I Was about to make my order online and noticed we now have the option of purchasing a developer version or an unlocked version. What should I choose? Is one more than the other? Does the unlocked have more network bands than the developer? Any info will be greatly appreciated.:good:

There is no difference except the HTC DEV version has a unlocked bootloader. They both are the base off the AT&T model so if you need tmobile its better to wait or buy the GPE model which is 699.

fm radio
do you know if the developer/unlocked edition have FM radio like the at&t version does?

I was looking at the Developer Edition and notice that it's for $649 vs GPE $699.
If they are the same(except for sense), you could save $50 on the Dev version then replace ROM with GPE ROM. Is that correct?

So the Dev version... S-off or S-on?

Everything will come s-on.
One curious thing about the Unlocked vs Dev Ed is that the Dev Ed says the bootloader "can be unlocked" rather than says it comes unlocked. This would indicate to me that you'd still have to go to HTCDev to unlock it but also would beg the question why can't unlock the bootloader on the unlocked version?
MG

They seem like the exact same thing to me.
My guess is the dev version will come with an unlocked bootloader, while you'll have to manually unlock the unlocked version.

Does the developer edition not get updates quicker? Always thought this was the case.

Yea I noticed typos on the spec sheet. You would think HTC would get it together with their marketing. Such a simple error but critical error, kind of like sending in a resume with your apartment number wrong. Or in this case, confusing or turning away potential buyers who think they aren't getting the newer chipset.

The phones are essentially the same except that bootloader, but does anyone know if we can unlock the bootloader of the Unlocked version through HTCDev? Silver is only available Unlocked, so I thought I'd mention this.

Im in the same boat as you. Want the silver one, so will have to go unlocked. My guess is yes it is unlockable. The phone is based on the ATT version, which is unlockable, so i dont see why this woudnt be. Only networks like Verizon block unlocking the bootloader.

But then why would they make an unlocked and developer version? Wouldn't it defeat the purpose? Also, they didn't make the Silver for the AT&T SKU. Believe it or not, I'm kind of skeptical as to whether it is based off of the AT&T SKU like the others. I thought the color was Verizon exclusive, and I don't want it to turn out to be an unlocked phone with Verizon bands...

HTC looks like they hv linked up with Amazon cuz dev editions and factory unlocked is selling thru Amazon directly from htc

Unlocked means carrier free.
Developer means unlocked boot loader.
Confusing but true.
As for the supported radio bands, I assume that's listed on HTCs website.

No, its still the AT&T version. Check the bands. The difference between Dev and unlocked is Dev comes with unlocked bootloader, and the unlocked has an unlockable bootloader.

Yeah I saw that, but I don't fully trust HTC to put the proper info there. I mean really, they got the CPU wrong. The gunmetal is unique so I think I'll actually stick with that though.

Has anyone touched and felt all 3 colors? I heard that the Gunmetal one is 90% aluminum but the other two may not be because of their coloring and content? Can someone confirm this?

Yeah I felt the Silver one. It's still the same amount of aluminum, but it just has a different finish. That's all.

Anyone seen the lte bands the dev edition supports?

New to M8, first things first

Waiting on an M8 arriving today from Virgin mobile. I assume it will be the international version?
What do you recommend to check first? Bootloader/baseband version? (for s off/boot loader unlock purposes)
The choice was between this and a Z2, the Z2 is still a bit tempting but after trying one in store it didn't really seem to have a wow factor. Don't get me wrong it's got really impressive specs and features but it didn't feel as solid as I imagined, think that's were the M8 has other phones beat.
Upgrading from the S4, so not a massive jump, but from what I've read the M8 build quality and software optimisation are second to none.

I could be wrong on this but isnt Virgin Mobile operating on Sprints or Verizons network, which are CDMA, so you shouldnt be getting an international version.
Be very careful, CDMA and GSM ROMS are not interchangable.

[Q] Newly announced unlocked M9 available tomorrow - AT&T only?

Just read on CNET that HTC will start making the unlocked version available on its site at midnight tonight. A little digging seems to confirm that the model is based on AT&T's SKU. So, this won't work on Verizon right? (well I guess the 4g LTE should, but no voice?)

No, it won't since Verizon uses CDMA, which unlocked and developer variant don't have.
What I'm worried about is that they didn't announce a Developer Edition, just an unlocked one. I don't know how hard it would be to unlock the bootloader (never had an HTC device) but it's been difficult or impossible on past phones of mine.

Where to buy Unlocked LG G4?

It seems like all of the of the carriers have released the LG G4 locked to the carrier, but where can I purchase it unlocked, so that I can switch between carriers?
Does Best Buy sell it unlocked?
I'm in South Florida, USA.
Thank you.
Best place so far, and several have got them from this seller on ebay here at XDA

He is selling the Asian version.
The only one with an unlockable bootloader (right now) is the EU version. (if that matters to you)
I suppose I'm confused about the differences. I'd like to be able to root/unlock the bootloader - which will allow me to install custom ROMs/modifications?
But my main concern at the moment is being able to switch carriers - for example from Sprint to T-Mobile.
I dont think you can go from sprint to t-mobile. Sprint is CDMA and T-Mobile is GSM
Also good to know the 815 isnt universal, had no idea. WAY to many SKUs on this phone!!
The Asian version at that link will run on T-Mobile, AT&T or any other GSM provider just fine. It won't run on Sprint or Verizon.
I have an unlock one up gor sale on swappa. Check for Fidelio_o
No one is selling an unlocked version. An unlock is not even available (for the US variants).
I got the unlocked version from that eBay listing. Using it on AT&T. Love it.
Does 815 have quick charging?
Does anyone know if 815 model comes with quick charging?

That's one of the questions I also have. If I buy the unlocked version will it be compatible with both AT&T & T-Mobile. And by compatible I mean will I get full 4G LTE speeds while using on either carrier. I currently have a unlocked branded T-Mobile HTC One M8 but I don't get AT&T's LTE when I put in one of their SIM cards.

It's not an AT&T branded model that was unlocked after purchase. It's a factory unlocked model. As in, not carrier branded, was never locked to begin with so didn't need to be unlocked.

Dude, I have an H815. The bootloader is not unlocked. Factory unlocked refers to the phone not being locked to a specific carrier, not the bootloader. It works on AT&T and T-Mobile and any GSM carrier I want. And I didn't have to do any unlocking myself to get it carrier unlocked. It came that way from the LG factory, hence the term "factory unlocked". LG sells this model that way. Warranty in tact.

real EU variants
Ok I know that just flicked through the thread and caught some one calling BS about not being able to buy unlocked as I bought mine direct from lg and it's unlocked, by not reading from the beginning I surmised it was about the boot loader.

Unlocked vs Dev Edition?

Whats up guys guys? So im definitely buying this phone, but problem is im on ATT. what really is the difference between Unlocked vs dev edition from HTC.com? i like to use RUUs to update software and occasionally wipe my phone clean after so many ROM installs. on my M9, the unlocked international version, there was only updated available through "update phone" section in settings. the DEV edition allowed me to go on HTC.com and download the RUU and update that way.
So what is truely the difference between unlocked/international and dev?
When you say dev edition.. I'm not sure what you're talking about. As the only thing currently available is an unlocked phone which works on att and tmobile. It's basically a dev edition.

There is no "Developer Edition" for the 10, only an "Unlocked" version. "Unlocked" in this case does not mean bootloader unlocked, it means carrier unlocked. There was a "Developer Edition" AND "Unlocked" version for the M9 and older devices, the difference being that "Developer Edition" came with an unlocked bootloader AND carrier unlocked. The "Unlocked" version comes only carrier unlocked but NOT bootloader unlocked. However, the bootloader on "Unlocked" devices CAN be unlocked through HTC Dev bootloader unlocking program.

yea i was talking about my M9 between those devices. on the M9, both the international and dev edition used different firmware. for this international HTC 10 device, where would i be able to get RUU's to update it? for the M9 international, they were not offered directly through HTC.

The unlocked US version (2PS650000) is different than the international version (2PS620000). They are actually different models. For past devices, HTCUSA has posted the RUUs for unlocked US devices on their rom update web page:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/rom-downloads.html
HTC International/EMEA typically does not post RUUs for their devices. That being said there are websites where leaked RUUs are always posted, however, they usually require a subscription.

Personally, I would go for the US unlocked version if for no other reason than warranty issues. To get a warranty repair on the international device you would have to send it overseas. Plus the international version is not sold in the United States so you would have to import it and pay taxes on that. Finally, that is the one that you know will have all the necessary radio bands for AT&T to work properly, as HTCUSA has tested the device on AT&T network.

It's an unlocked device it should work on most GSM Networks as long as you have a SIM card for that Network otherwise you would be using AT&T international roaming. Data speed may well fluctuate depending on what frequencies individual carriers predominantly use but you should be able to make phone calls and whatnot without issue.

If you unlock the bootloaders for the unlocked version it is still covered by warranty. So there's not much difference other than if you want updates right away go Nexus. If you don't mind waiting for developers or HTC to bring the next version then get an HTC 10.

Nowadays tmo with their overseas roaming is the hot ticket for extended traveling. Just turn your phone on wherever you land and it works without having to get localized sims, distribute your regularly changing number, etc. Oddly the coverage overseas is better than in the US. They say you will be restricted to unlimited 2G data but normally you will get 3G. Seriously, I'm old and travel a lot. You're ahead of the game to port over and back compared to sim swapping because low cost sims are not always available and you save a lot of hassle. Next best option is sim swapping, Worst possible option is to use at&t as their overseas stuff is stupidly overpriced.
No matter which way you go most recent flagship phones travel pretty well as long as you don't require LTE, if you do you will want to research the carriers in the areas you will be traveling and get a prepaid on a network that your phone supports. Trip adviser forum is a pretty good resource for getting advise on the local coverage.

Yeah, I don't care about LTE myself, is nice but not in any way a requirement. Having some data however is huge. You can translate, get information, and maps has become very good with walking and mass transit directions. I also use Here and download the maps for the entire area I'm going to be in before I leave. It's the easiest way to have mapping capability in remote areas.
The information I posted is essentially the conventional wisdom you will get if you search the travel forums, they're the go to for specific local information.

Do you know what the difference is in between the two models? The thing is that I will be in US until mid May and then will move to Europe. I am planning on pre ordering it but not sure if the US unlocked version would work flawlessly in Europe. I would opt buying it in US if there are no differences as I can use the discount coupon and it is much cheaper here than UK or Germany.
I could read out some changes in terms of bands, but not sure what does it translate to!?
I would appreciate any help!

The supported network frequencies are the big difference. Check to confirm that the international model supports the network frequencies you will need while still in the states and vice versa.

I have checked both the unlocked US and EMEA model, the only difference is on the LTE bands. I checked the LTE bands in Europe through wiki and most seem to use band 1,3,7,20, which are covered by the US model as well. Other than that gsm, 2G and 3G are the same.
Would someone confirm that the US model would work properly in EU?

Difference between HTC 10 Carrier Models?

I've been running on an M9 for the past two years, and with the HTC11 coming around the corner, pricing on the 10 becomes very tempting. But I might be switching carriers from AT&T to Verizon, so I need to know if there's any difference now between the phones, or if they're all 'multi-carrier' at this point. IOW, do I need to look for a specific Verizon-variant or AT&T-variant, or is there no difference anymore?
Thanks in advance!

Verizon one is a CDMA variant, it supports most but not all of the Unlocked version LTE bands. Also you're at the mercy of VZW for software updates (they haven't even updated to Nougat yet).
On the other hand, the Verizon variant works with all their network features (e.g advanced calling) out of the box. To get the Unlocked version working on the VZW network, you'd have have s-off first and flash new radios. This isn't difficult to do, but beware of the added cost of having to S-off.
So then there are, in fact, two variants - CDMA for Verizon and GSM for AT&T. Correct?

Yes but the GSM one (referred to as U.S Unlocked) is not make specifically or only for AT&T, if that's what you mean. It's sold by HTC for use on any gsm network.
I believe there is also a version from Sprint that is a CDMA variant.
Edited my original post to say the Verizon variant doesn't support all of the Unlocked version LTE bands.

So what you're saying is that the radio can operate on all bands, and I could theoretically buy a 'Verizon' model, re-flash the radio, and it becomes a fully functional AT&T model?
I'm asking, because back in the day, the radio hardware was different. Ive flashed ROM and radio combinations for my Inspire/Desire and M7. My present M9 is a bit of a disappointment, only because I'll never again buy a phone with a camera that lacks OIS. Hence my interest in the M10.
Unless, of course, the purported HTC11 us a world-beater, but truthfully, I'm not confident.

yes. You see lots of verizon users converting their unlocked to verizon or the other way round.
You just flash the HTC US Unlocked RUU, not just the radio. Supercid and set the mid to US unlocked.
You need s-off though..additionally it needs to be on Marshmallow. temp root on vzw nougat got patched and sunshine s-off won't work anymore.

Got it. I did Sunshine for my M9, and it was great. I'll wait to see what HTC does with the upcoming 11, and unless it's incredible - and worth $400 more than a NIB 10, I'll probably go with the 10 to save money and get a camera I can live with. It's hard to imagine what not having OIS can do to your pictures.

Because I'm getting closer to making a purchase, I'd like to touch on this one last time.
Since AT&T didn't carry the M10, I'm forced to look for a Verizon, Sprint or Tmobile variant. I prefer something New In Box, but it seems they're hard to come by, the best condition (and most adorable) being from Sprint.
But if I can't unlock and flash an RUU that would enable the phone to be fully functional on AT&T, it would wind up being an expensive paperweight.
So, any last assurances that this will work out no matter which variant I buy would really put my mind at ease.
Thanks again!

Hi,
I was in your situation and finally pulled the plug on Verizon variant. It came with an OS that is patched by Verizon blocking Sunshine S-OFF/Unlock. But browsing around XDA & google search, I found the steps and spent some $ to S-OFF/Unlock. Long story short, finally I ended up with HTC 10 Verizon variant converted to Developer Edition.
1) Will Verizon variant work with AT&T out of box? Yes, but LTE didn't work for me. I set bands to Global to get 4G. One thing I observed was unable to do OS update. I didn't invest much time on OS update because I was prepared to convert phone to unlocked well before purchase.
2) Which variant of HTC 10 is best? Unlocked if you can get good condition phone within budget. Else, refer point #1.

Seems the best price on FleaBay is about $430 with no warranty, but HTC has them for $499 brand new direct, probably because the Ocean is to be released in about three weeks.
I wonder if it makes sense to wait for the price to drop further, or buy now with a direct purchase in the hope of getting price protection and/or a warranty.
Does HTC include any warranty when buying from them?

be aware that it will just work on the verizon variant, when it is running marshmallow. temp root is patched on verizon when it is running nougat, means only way to s-off would be a javacard/mail in service handled by @jcase for example.
