Front face camera doesn't work (update coming or not?) - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I got pissed off fixing the front face camera issue on my Nexus 7 and gave Google a call. Basically, its says "cannot connect to a camera" and crashes on stock camera app. Skype crashes as well.
I've did all the resets and a hard reset as well, and none of the methods seem to help, and I believe the rocket science is not needed to get the front face camera working. The device runs stock android.
I've called Google twice and described the issue, and they always say its a known software issue and I should wait for a fix. I tried to google it, but haven't found anything on this particular issue, so I think the device is defective and my update will never come.
Is this really a software issue?

Front camera works fine on mine

Front camera is a know issue on Nexus 5 I know. Still a camera fix and battery drain fix should be rolling out in the near future via 4.4.3.
Sent from my Nexus 7 Flo running Odex SinLess ROM 4.4.2 with ElementalX kernel using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I remember other devices (old evo3d) and would get that error if I changed ROMs and or kernals to ones that didn't work fully.

Correct. I just read the list of fixes for 4.4.3 and it was on the list... Should be coming relatively shortly.

Its not an issue on all hardware, only a select number of Nexus devices. But, they are stating that 4.4.3 will correct this issue, among other fixes including the camera focus. Basically 4.4.3 is for fixing the bugs, not really for updating features.

Both cameras work here.

Mine is working fine.

Got it replaced. I knew it was a defective, but the Google rep kept insisting me to wait for an update. Just had to call again and basically REQUESTED a replacement.

Had a unit like yours which would crash all the time, especially on camera, made nandroid backup, replaced unit, restored nandroid, problems went away, new unit never crashes on camera or anything else, despite running same image as before.

Contact information is all in the booklet that came with it.
Warranty is through ASUS unless purchased directly from the PlayStore.

Oh,that's helpful, but i still wanna solve it by myself.Thank you.
Sfhub answered your questions.
It's 99% certain that it's hardware.
You can't fix it yourself. Flashing multiple ROMs proves that, unless the flaw is on the original source, so it's not software.
You need to return it to seller if you still can, or contact ASUS to send it for repair. Those are your only choices.
As what Danvee said, if it is in its exchange period with whoever you purchased it from I would exchange it.
If you are frustrated or concerned about its overall quality and it is within its return period I would return it.
If it is outside of both then contact Asus directly to get it replaced/fixed.

I know this is a bit late but flashing the ROM isn't voiding the warranty right? I've been running into reboot issues (sometimes just without doing anything). Can I unroot it and get it replaced still?

Google Play All Access

Ok so I'm using my free trial of play music all access and I love it but question, when I select to "Keep Music on Device" and it says it's downloading, does that mean I get to keep it permanently? Even after the trial is up?
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
No. Only music you buy is kept. However, if you are a music addict like I am, the 9 bucks is worth it. If you don't renew your subscription, your music will disappear. If you start using all access again, your music will come back.

Is Google Music finally working properly on stock ROMs? I remember the app was plagued with the "Music Cannot Be Played" issue, no matter what sort of connection you had. I've switched over to CM 10.2 and it works flawlessly now, but just wondering if any of the updates Google's released has fixed the issue.

Worked well when I was on stock zvc and Optimus. On KitKat now and works well too.

I flashed back to zvc yesterday and so far I've had no streaming errors. Knock on wood.

I just flashed back to stock today, and I have noticed that Play Music is better, but I still have issues. It will let me play a few songs (I got through 5) and I get the Music Playback Error. When I try to resume, it gives me the error immediately, but if I rewind the song, it allows me to play a few more songs.
I am going to try and disable caching and see how that affects it.
All of my testing thus far has been on Wifi (20Mbps fiber connection), so it definitely is not an internet issue.
Yeah the errors started up again for me too, but much more infrequently. Still frequent enough to be a huge nuisance though

I have logged a case with Google Play Support. They had me go through clearing app data, etc. Of course, this didn't work, so they asked for a logcat. I sent them two logs showing multiple occurrences of the error.
So far, they have been very responsive. I sent the ticket in yesterday evening and got a response within 15 minutes. Hopefully, their engineering team can figure out what is going on from my logcats.

Something similar happened when I logged a complaint... 4 months ago. Not to be cynical, I just can't help it.
Hm yeah I think I'll stick with CM10.2, it's extremely stable at this point for me, zero issues, and Google Music works flawlessly.
I had this problem as well. Ended up switching to rhapsody until the issue is resolved,

Front Camera Issue

My m919 is currently on a custom rom. For about a month or two the front camera has not worked. I originally had it on cm11 and thats when it messed up. I then did a clean install of the stock rom via ODIN. The same issue would happen, I would open the camera and it would say, "warning, camera has stopped working." The back camera works fine but if I try to switch it gives me the same error. Then I have to go into app preferences and clear the app data to get it working again. Since then I have tried 3 more roms and the same issue persists. Everytime I install a new rom I do a clean install. Any ideas?
My rear camera did the same thing under similar circumstances (happened running the nightlies when cm was having trouble with camera stuff).
I bought a new rear camera (oem part off another m919). Had the nearest cell phone repair store install it. Still nothing.
Ended up calling T-Mobile. They sent me another S4 for free after having me do a factory reset.

This not related to ROM but hardware issue I had same issue with my first S4 the front cam stopped working after couple of weeks. If you are still under warranty you should contact them for repair or replacement. No ROM will fix this.

Yes I thought that might be the issue, and it's still under warranty. It takes 1-2 weeks though , plus my phones rooted and don't want to flash it to stock haha So I just went ahead and bought a replacement camera for 10$ off ebay and it came in 2 days. Got it today and only took 10 minutes to replace it. Works fine and I didn't have to send it in Thank you for responding!

[Q] Is anyone else having GPS issues?

I'm running rooted, stock with stock kernel and my GPS signal won't get a lock. I can't use Nav or get my precise location in Maps either. I tried to reset my GPS data as well as download AGPS files, but neither proved successful. Does anyone know how to fix the issue?

Yes. Are you on 4.4.2? GPS is a known bug on 4.4.2, and 4.4.3 is supposed to fix it.

Unless they're labeled as updated or are 4.4.3, I would assume not.
just a tip, try downloading waze app and see if that fixes it!
I've had no troubles with this phone, but on my gs2 when I did I used a program from play store called "topntp" that worked wonders for getting a GPS fix.

There are no 4.4.3 ROMs from what I have looked at and if there were, none were TW, stock. Tried the app the previous post mentioned and had no luck with it. Using Waze isn't a solution to the problem, simply a workaround and I hate the UI of Waze, which is why I use Maps instead. There has to be a fix for this issue. I've ordered a replacement device in the meantime.

4.4.3 has not been released yet so there will not be any ROMs using it yet.
So what is a fix for the issue?

I don't seem to have the problem for what I use the phone for, but then I don't use navigate often. I do use one of the AGPS updater (can't recall which one at the moment) and I do get a good lock fairly quickly (under 4s).
If there really is an issue however, the fix is in the updated Android 4.4.3 release which as already stated has not yet been released. So there is no "fix".

Just sayin, it is a little better then the main apps page like live updates which includes traffice, the actual time youll get to your destination, accidents, and so on.....your probably the first one that doesnt likes waze......you did ask for a fix......i had the same issue with mine on non-rooted and rooted devices and thats the reason why i use waze, it gets the job done better then the main navi app. but it might be a faulty equipment, get it swapped but note that it will be a refurbished device
Waiting for the next update and hope it would be fixed.

Camera Failed Error

Just a tip - If you suddenly start getting the Camera Failed message don't try factory resetting or running back to the store to exchange right away. It is most likely NOT a hardware issue like so many people immediately declare. I did some Googling and for S5 forums (same Kit Kat/Touchwiz/UI) suggested removing any flashlight or other camera apps recently installed. I had just installed Go Flashlight. Took it off and voila camera fully operational again. No wiping, reload, or exchange needed. Maybe there's some conflict with the latest UI? Who knows. Hope this info helps and saves you a bunch of time and aggrevation.

Hy, yesterday i bought the new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and after the reinstallation of all the app that i have on Samsung Galaxy S5, when i open the camera i look this error "camera failed".
I have the same problem on my Samsung Galay S5, i think that is impossible that i have 2 broken smartphone.
In Any case i have deleted the Google Camera and FOR NOW i have no problem.
Is possible that the Google Camera or other applications create a problem with the camera?
Any other experience?
I had this issue (and one when whole phone goes dark after attempt to use camera) but in my case one single reboot fixed issue. I did use master reset after it because TouchWiz start cashing on start up, all good now.
a have camera problem to but its not fix cleared catch/factory rest/update to 6.0.1
what should i do? changing rom may help?
