[Q] Phone rebooting upon /system modifications? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am brand new to android and recently rooted my M8. I was trying to change the /system/customize/acc/default.xml to hide the NFC icon and when I attempted to save the file the phone rebooted and later asked if I wanted to send HTC an error report.
I have tried this with several file managers which all have root priveleges. It seems as though this happens when trying to modify anything in /system. Am I missing something obvious?

I did the mod that exists currently and while it makes the icon transparent it still takes up space on the status bar. I was trying to set the nfc_show_icon setting to zero. Nothing is screwed up I just can't change the file.

yea i tried to install xposed and it did the same thing, at least i didn't have to restore my backup, but curious that the phone reboots and restores when system is modified...

the m8 has system write protection, wait for an insecure kernel/module to be made or use custom recovery and adb to make changes within /system

Keeps downloading image even when already downloaded

My girlfriend has downloaded an image from internet by long pressing the image and then selecting "save image" on her Wildfire S with stock Android 2.3.3.
The problem is that the phone keeps downloading this image over and over again even when it is already downloaded. It tries to download the image about every sync action for over a week already.
Before i just delete the whole history i thought maybe someone here knows the answer to this problem, so she can avoid it in the future.
Many thanks for your help!
Hi, I have similar problem, but with applications. Sometimes phone starts downloading already installed app. Even if I set all apps to manual update only.
This behavior is really killing my data plan limit!
My friend with the same phone has this problem too.
Anyone have similar problem or solution to fix it?
The same with me. Does anybody know how to fix it?
Same here. Must be something specific to the wildfire S
I've got the same issue. I guess it'll go away once I can flash a CyanogenMod or MIUI ROM
Works for me alright

It's worth completely removing the offending application and then reinstalling it. I had the download issue with 'LED Light'. Removed it and reinstalled it and problem resolved.
I now have the same issue with another appl - will try the same solutoin
It seems to happen when you do an update which is interrupted partway
We ported this rom on the Aria and had the same issue. I replaced the DownloadProvider.apk and DownloadProviderUI.apk with the ones in CM7 and it now works fine.
Can you offer this for us?

Here are the apps. You need to delete them from your current rom and replace them for these.
How do I delete them without root access? My Wildfire S is not and can not be rooted at the moment

I assumed the Wildfire S was "rootable". That's a very goo question. You can try something but I have absolutely no guaranties it is going to work because I personally never tried it. Either way, it's your call.
**Make sure you back-up your phone to the Google Server because this will wipe all the data in your phone.**
1- Run the RUU for your phone. This will extract the rom to the temp folder of your computer. For me it's under C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\. An easy way to find it is to clear that folder prior to running the RUU. This way, it should be the only thing in there.
2- Enter the folder and look for a zip file called rom.zip
3- Open the zip file using 7-zip or Winzip. DO NO EXTRACT THE FILES ON YOUR COMPUTER TO REPACKAGE AFTER. THIS WILL SCREW UP THE ROM. You really want to make any addition or subtraction from the archiving utility.
4- Extract the system.img file. Now the challenge is to find a way to edit the content of that file. I personally have no idea how to but I'm sure there must be some tools to do that.
5- Once you've managed to open the .img file, under system/app, there should be DownloadProvider.apk and DownloadProviderUI.apk. Delete those and replace them with the ones I sent in my previous post.
6- Close the .img file.
7- From 7-zip, delete the system.img file and replace it with the one you edited.
8- Close 7-zip and follow the rest of the instructions from the RUU.
Again, no idea if any of this will work because I've never been in the situation to make changes on an unrooted phone. Your biggest challenge is step 4. If you cannot get in that .img file, then I guess you'll have to wait to get root access to your phone. My guess is that it shouldn't be too long since HTC agreed to unlock the HBoot.
Good Luck!
And is it possible to change this files in a "running" ROM Image (rooted, without flashing)?

I think so. Like I said, I never tried it so it's all speculation here. How about you try to install the apk on top of the ones you currently have, i.e. without deleting them? You do have the ablility to install from Unknown Sources correct?

Yes i have. But I'm new to Android, so I want to be careful.
I replaced both in system\app folder (without installing) and after that my market doesn't work anymore.
So I had to flash my ROM cause the Backup files didn't work too.
Was a lot of work, making all new (but at least Titanium Backup works ).
Maybe somebody other knows more?

I am a bit confused here. What do you mean by you replaced in system/app without installing? Also, you said you used Titanium Backup. I thought this app only worked on rooted phone
Unfortunately, I cannot be of much help because I really have an Aria with a ported rom from Wildfire S. I personally fixed the download issue by deleting and reinstalling these apps, but in reality, I have no idea if that would work on the actual Wildfire S. Sorry that I cannot be of any help.
My phone is rooted.
I mean I changed the apk files in folder system/app with those from you (using Root Explorer). Before I deleted them I made a backup of the original ones.

Ok, so try this then. Delete the apk and don't replace them. Flash the Rom and boot the phone. Then install the apk from ur original Rom, i.e. not the ones I provided, but the ones u originally deleted.

I already flashed my Phone with original ROM and it works again, but the bug is again there.
The point is, I dont want to flash my ROM every week so I hoped there is a solution to change without flashing again.
Otherwise I will wait, my there will be a fix from HTC.
But I wanna say thank you, for your help and your patience with me!

I'm with you on the flashing. I'm not sure HTC will release a fix for this though. However, what u can do is return ur phone and get another one. It seems not everybody has this issue. I'm personally glad I could resolve it on my phone.
Good luck!

[Q] stock settings apk missing

So I recently rooted my Note 2 anddddd a few days after playing around with it (without a backup...i know...dumb me.) I am missing the settings apk so, in turn, I can't access my settings. Any one know how I can fix?
Thanks!

Backup your data, full wipe, reflash a stock rom. Unless someone can get you a stock titaniumbackup for the apk (which I dont even know is possible) you are out of luck I believe.
Another thing to check is to open up a stock rom's system/app folder on your computer and find the settings apk, maybe you can copy and past it into your directory with a file manager (es file manager if you need one). I've got nothing better to do right now so I will try it.
Edit: Too many settings apks. You've got to find the missing one
The second options should do it...
Thanks guys. Went with the first option. My next root run will come with many backups. Thanks!

Status/Notification bar is no longer visible

I attempted to flash a .zip patch to remove the QSlide Apps part of the notification drop-down menu, and since then I've been getting constant messages of "System UI has stopped" and the status bar does not show at all. Tried a factory reset on the phone itself but to no avail. Going to attempt to flash system stock ROM from a .zip ... any other suggestions / advice???
Thanks in advance

Why do you guys keep flashing things without making a backup first?! Unfortunately there is no other way for you to get back to working order; you have to LGPST back to stock. Next time make a backup if you're going to flash ANYTHING.

I had something simpler happen with exposed framework, my status bar would disappear then I would get an error "system UI has stopped" . Just un installed all modules and removed exposed. Not sure if you are using exposed. But that's how I fixed mine.
When the f*ck did we get ice cream??
Can a mod move this to the Q&A section please before it gets out of hand. Not flaming you bro but we as a community need to keep things in order and post where we are supposed to post. Don't worry we've all posted in the wrong section a time or two.

You dont need to flash the whole thing just overwrite LGSystemUI.apk with the original one I attached, set correct permission and reboot.
You should backup any file you decide to change first..luckily the phone will still boot with a bad systemui apk
Hopefully that fixes it, hopefully what he flashed didn't change any other files outside of Systemui.

Thanks for the apk and sorry about posting in the wrong forum at first.....
How exactly should I go about installing the new apk though? When I used Package Installer it keeps saying "Application not installed" and doesn't run. Sideload Wonder Machine or something equivalent maybe? I had a tough time today with setting up LGPST so I'd like to save that as a last resort if possible.... Thanks for the responses though!
Never mind....figured it out. Forgot it had to be pushed over.... Needless to say I need to spend some more time around Android! It's been a while since I first got in the game.
Status bar is back up and running, and it even maintained removal of the QSlide Apps portion, which is what I was trying to fix all along -- my original screw up! All's well that ends well I guess.
Thanks all for your help! :good:

Help renaming system files

Hey first post and maybe a noob question but I have a rooted international m8 on o2.
I'm trying to rename the htclockscreen.apk in the system/priv-apps as I've seen doing this enables the stock aosp lock screen. Every time I do it superuser access is given but upon a reboot or refresh the filename is back to the original. The same happened when trying to rename the boot animation files.
Ive tried both root explorer and es. Anyone any ideas?
You have to mount /system as writable before you make any changes.
I believe in ES it's somewhere under Tools.
Thanks for the quick reply, just had a look under tools and can't see any option for that.
I think you turn Root Explorer on...
It's less than intuitive in es (which I don't use), but each good file manager has an option to mount system rw.

Thanks I found that, although that was already on and upon rename it says successful but it keeps just changing back. Same with root browser. Both get granted superuser.
Edit: I think this might b because I'm still S-On?

If you were S-OFF I would have suggested this thread where they give the commands to mount the /system partition but it was also mentioned later on in that thread that it "resets" after every reboot so...
Else you can probably check if this Kernel Module works for you.
I've just 'S-Off'd my device and it has solved the problem
Thanks for your help guys

Cool, Congrats and I'm glad to "hear" then :good:
Since your S-OFF you can probably look into this thread as well to get rid of that pesky "Tampered" banner in bootloader.

"Activvity is not exist in this device" popup when entering Lock Screen in Settings

"Activvity is not exist in this device" popup when entering Lock Screen in Settings
Hello everyone.
I have messed a little up while trying to install as system app some fake gps apps, and since then, my lock screen has been reset, there is no shortcut and when I try to enter the Lock Screen settings a popup appears with written "Activity is not exist in this device".
I can't really understand why doing that caused that.
I guess, somehow, the .apk about the lockscreen got deleted in the operation.
I am running Fulmics 4.3, I'd like not to reflash the ROM just for this little problem.
Does anyone know the .apk related name file or has another solution please?

How about you do reflash the ROM? No need to wipe data if you flash the same system image. You don't have anything additional stuff you edited on system partition that you would lose by reflashing it, no?
I can't seem to find 4.3 but I assume that 4.1 will work. (mega:///#!HE1QzYoZ!ktj3enhUe0_axivfQFC08jxuDKdo_UZ1gV2NzdZnlig)
Ofc do the backup just in case you get stuck in a bootloop.

Actually i would have to re-set up some anti theft apps installed as system app...and I should reflash the 5.1, then the 5.2, then 5.3, then the N style notification bar...
However, I guess I have found on the rom archive the apk I needed.
It should be LGLockScreenSettings_2.apk and LGLockScreenSettings_Provider.apk found under \system\app, the only problem is that I don't remember how to install them
On the root partition I can't find an folder called "app"...
I guess I'll keep looking for the system app location...
Thanks anyway
