New Freebie from Samsung! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Today, Samsung announced a new Kindle for Samsung app through their Samsung Apps Store. Rather than trying to rewrite their blog post (http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=35871), i'll just copy from their summary:
- Samsung and Amazon agreed to launch ‘Kindle for Samsung’, a custom-built eBook service offering millions of best-selling books, newspapers and magazines on readers’ mobile devices including over 500,000 exclusive titles.
- Samsung and Amazon will also launch Samsung Book Deals, a service providing 12 free eBooks a year to all Kindle for Samsung Galaxy smartphone and tablet users. (Basically, they let you choose one of four books to get for free every month).
I already installed the app. It looks better than the official Kindle app in my opinion. And the first 4 free books to choose from are already up.

I think i'm gonna go with Apocalypse Z.

Download a free open-source e-book reader and you get a million more of these than Amazon is giving you, and without the con. I didn't check your complete list but the one you chose is definately free:

What con are you talking about? Samsung is offering books for free. Books that you would otherwise need to pay for.
And contrary to what you posted, the Apocalypse Z book is not free. I went to the link you suggested. Doesn't look legit or legal. I searched for some other books that I know are not free (The Goldfinch, Hunger Games, LOTR). Guess what? They all came up as 'free' with a 'download now' button next to them. But not before the download link took me to two (yes, two) other sites (usearchmedia(.)com and mediasuns(.)com). And of course, there was the obligatory disclaimer at the bottom of the ebook-share site:
"DISCLAIMER: None of the files shown here are actually hosted or transmitted by this server. The links are provided solely by this sites users. The administrator of this site cannot be held responsible for what its users post, or any other actions of its users. You may not use this site to distribute or download any material when you do not have the legal rights to do so. It is your own responsibility to adhere to these terms."
Why would you criticize Samsung for providing free LEGAL books, call it a con, and then point users to some crap illegal file-sharing site?

Yes, there's a lot of free stuff for Android. Still, I like where Samsung is going. They are really pushing hard to separate themselves from Google, Amazon, and all the other manufacturers. If that means giving me free stuff, like Milk and Kindle for Amazon, then i'm all for it.

At least we get what we pay for. They should give more to their loyal customers.

Great step
Great step taken by 2 Giant. I love it. Thanks for this great step.

In this case I was conned, but more often than not it is the reverse. Many times I see these online book publishers selling public domain work which I have downloaded freely from Project Gutenberg. So in general I am right, I just chose a bad example. I download books only from Project Gutenberg but in an attempt to demonstrate my point here I just made a quick Internet search on the one title.
My recommendation is still to download a free e-book reader and to freely down free public domain books.
Frank

You have your point man, and we respect it. Actually I never spent $ on e-books, reading should be free.

Reading is free. It's the books that sometimes cost money.
Not all of the books I want to read are public domain. I don't mind paying for decent books. I'm not going to spend $20 on an ebook, but I don't mind spending a few dollars. I bought Hugh Howey's 'Silo' series for like $3 and it was worth every penny. On the other hand, I went out and bought 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' for $12 because all my friends swore by it, but I couldn't get past the first 50 pages. Just not my writing/reading style. Wish I could return it. lol
80% of my ebooks and audiobooks I get from the library anyway. I just finished the Dune audiobook last week, and now am reading the Dune Messiah ebook. I got both from the library via Overdrive.

I must say reading books should be free. Thanks for correcting it. I can see you're a bookworm and this freebies are for readers like you. Enjoy the freebies

Shame on people charging money for spending their time writing books. Taking is free so phones should be free too?!? Dumb.

I see you're from Lilburn. I was in Atlanta for a conference and decided to drive to Lilburn to visit some family. Nice drive, nice town (or city). I didn't get lost once, which made me very proud considering I am from NYC and don't drive that often.
Anywho...

I know what you were trying to say. I seek out freebies every chance I can get too. I hardly ever turn down a free book, even if it's something I don't think i'll read. I got two free Audible audiobook credits that I am trying to decide what to use on (I was originally going to go with LOTR, but I only have two credits and don't want to have to pay for the third book.) I recently got 'Heart of Darkness' and 'A Princess of Mars' cause they were free on Amazon (along with the Audible audiobook free as well).
I live by two rules. Never look a gift horse in the mouth. And never turn down a free book.

Is there any difference with Jewels that's free on the market? Trying to see why it'd be worth buying it.
Also, they both seem a little to slow, especially compared to Zoo Keeper which is one of my favorite game on the DS.

no, i tried all the free ones, and there is none that can compare to Bejeweled, it's simply the most addictive of them all, and the music, i love the music it's so relaxing when you are in a slow moving bank line up or in the subway waiting for the train to arrive

Sims3
Need for Speed
Tetris
Soccer 2010
and some other ones were also at 99 cents
look at their prices now they are between $4 to $7
it's in no way an Advert, it's just letting others that are interested in this game to grab it for a buck
personally i wouldn't pay for anything that cost more than a $1 unless it's a really really worth software app like GPS program or Office Suite for the phone

Getting the account itself is pretty straightforward. It's ensuring you can get paid without having 30% of what you make from apps disappear that's is hard.
Apple and Google pay from the local office. I fail to see why MS can't do the same.
(They could, but as usual MS doesn't care about people outside the USA).

Titanium reverts to donate version

I upgraded my Titanium Backup to the Pro version paying the $5.95 (actually $1.00 + CHF 5.25). it was instantly upgraded, and I got the email (+smses from my bank). Yesterday on its own it has reverted back to the donate version. Also,if I remember correctly there was a second Titanium app which is also now missing. I am on Android 2.3.3 on my Dinc 2.
I download the pro version from 4share.apk
Finally fixed. Titanium staff (Joel) were most helpful. Finally, removed and reinstalled Titanium Backup and the problem was fixed. Reinstalling the Key file did not help. Apparently, if you are using the same Google account then i. you can reload the key and ii.you can run it on multiple phones. They key is personal to you.

Yeah sorry. It's taking a paid app and making it free, which is almost like stealing. It's pirating. Not getting onto you, just letting you know anywhere you download something "pro" for free, you shouldn't share it.

I seldom use those forbidden sites to acquire fully functioning software products only to make sure that it WILL perform properly on my aged PC.
If it works and I like it, I actually purchase the software and re install the proper version on my PC.
If it does not work or I don't care for it I remove it.
Piracy for the sole purpose of trying to get something for free that is offered for usually a modest amount, is wrong plain and simple.
It IS nice of you to offer help to people that are stuck trying to make use of the software that they DID pay for.
Usually there is a Read Me file within the file or on the site stating that if you like the product, then you should pay for it.
And now that you know, If you like the product and it works as it should, you should either pay for it or uninstall it.
The site you quoted probably doesn't pay ANY add revenue to the developer of the product.
I know it was a hassle to get my purchase validated also, but I kept at it and feel good about having done this.

The xda book, why we should pay it?

for sure you have heard about the new "XDA Developers' Android Hacker's Toolkit"
It is certainly a good idea to regroup all the forums method inside a book, wrote by hackers and geek.
the only thing I think is strange is that XDA focused on idea sharing and hacker philosopy.
So why do we have to pay for this book? It should be free, because it is not "original", all of us in some way wrote it...I don't want to pay it not because i don't want to spend money, but because I think it should respect the hacker philosopy.

I think that XDA provide us with a great place to come and learn and share our knowledge. In order to achive this their is going to be costs and if they can make some extra money from selling a book. To then use the said money to make this service even better, i can only see it as a good thing. Also a lot of people find it easier to read from a book than a computer screen.
Edit - I have just read the portal artical, and all the profits are going to the EFF, although the money is not going directly into XDA, it will directly help and benifit XDA, as they have done in the past.
All revenue earned through purchases of the book on Amazon will be donated to the EFF, which has given assistance to members of our community in the past. It’s available in both physical and eBook formats. Without further ado, here’s where you can get it right now:

Yes the profits are going to a very good cause. And to be honest with you I don't have any problem spending the $23 USD plus tax for the book. I really don't see why anyone would have a problem with it. But you just can not please all of the people no matter how hard you try.
I ordered mine in October, 2011. After many delays (like the Galaxy S3) I received my copy from amazon on Tuesday. I will use this weekend to read it. Learn some pointers.
As mentioned, profits from Amazon sales are donated to EFF.
All other profits (as anyone knows that has worked with a publisher), will be minuscule. We didn't do this to earn revenue, but to give people a great way to learn about Android development.
Keep on eye on the Portal...we'll be giving away a batch of free copies in the near future.

[Q] Free or paid in Play store

At the moment I’m finishing my first set of Zooper widgets with clock elements and weather forecast elements. I'd like to deploy them thru the Play store and so I have to choose to make them free or paid. I'd like to continue making widgets for Zooper and it would be great if I can earn some money with it...
So, are there some written or unwritten guidelines when to publish for free or when to publish a paid extension?

The main three reasons:
1) I do this as a hobby. I have fun doing it and will do it, even if no one pays me.
2) If you are selling stuff on the Play Store, you are responsible for paying the appropriate taxes. You also have to deal with tax laws in each country you sell your app/widget in. For the amount of money I could make of this after Play Store cut and taxes, the additional workload is just too high.
3) I have a good paying job and thus I'm not dependent on additional funds.
I give most of mine away because of the encryption bug for jelly bean. I sell a few. Been working hard on trying to smash that bug. Bunch of us Zooper devs have. I make enough usually to pay my $55 a month aio/straight talk bill. Really I do it for fun. I work full time and i use it as an excuse to play on my phone. (I'm almost 40!)

Thanks for your explanation. I’ve read some about the tax issues and that is indeed a good reason not to sell Too bad Google does not handle these taxes their selves and is every small developer by law obligated to know the law in every country he sells.
