[Q] ES file explorer hidden files - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I have ES file explorer install on the FTV. When I tried to browse to the xbmc folders that contain the addons, user data, etc, I am unable to view these folders, its as if they are hidden. When i try to choose the option in es file explorer to show hidden files, the option will not turn on. Any suggestions? Thanks

it's because you don't have root. Some systems will let you browse them without, the FTV doesn't.

Thanks for the reply, I was suspecting that but wasn't sure. Hopefully root will come soon.

it works fine for me without root. this is with v3.1.1 if that makes any difference. but hidden files (basically dotfiles) are completely unrelated to root.
in ES if you open the Tools menu on the left hand side, scroll down. there is a setting for root explorer and there is a setting for hidden files. for some reason if you highlight any of those settings with the remote or a controller and press "ok"/"A-button"/etc., nothing happens. sort of annoying.
so highlight the hidden files line and you have to mouse click it. it will change from grey/OFF to blue/ON.
OR
the exact same setting is in the generic settings of the app, under the very first subsection "Display"
it's the very first setting under Display, and is a checkbox.
the "ok"/"A-button"/etc. *does* work here and the checkbox will be checked. and if you look back in the Tools on the main screen, you'll see that the button changed to blue/ON. like I said it's the same setting. just irritating the mainpage one seems to only work with mouse click.

Great tip, thanks so much for the info, works great

Is there a way around this on aftv??

Best thing for Fire TV users is a K400r keyboard with built-in trackpad mouse.
I got mine from the same place I got my Fire TV months ago,Best Buy.
It works near flawlessly on Fire TV.
I could see hidden folders before having root.
The mouse is also needed for enabling cheats on Xperia64's updated Mupen64Plus AE version.
Possibly on the stable 2.4.4 one as well.

Copy files via WiFi

Hello,
When I connect my Desire to WiFi, is there a possibility to copy files from my desktop (Ubuntu) to the Phone and visa versa?
I have found the answer on my own question.
But, if you are looking for the same, go to Google Market and search for 'swiftp'.
This works great!
This is better:

I use the ES file explorer.
As a lighter application after trying out Swiftp I can recommend it. A little harder for me to figure out how to set up, but very usable.

[Q] Exclude Folders from display when activating Gallery

Hi,
Does anyone know how I can exclude folders from display when I use the Gallery app?
I have lots of books in Aldiko that have covers and the Gallery app loads each of them when I use it. This can really slow down the use of the Gallery app.
I have tried manually deleting them whilst in Gallery but if I switch the device off it just reloads them the next time I use Gallery.
Hope someone can advise.
best regards

I know this works for music but i think it should also work for pictures. You can create or copy a .nomedia file in the folder and it won't scan the folder

The real solution for this is to use quickpic and then it will let you exclude folders.
Are you sure you're not trying to hid your porn pics or videos?
OK, here's the pro tip from yours truly. Make a folder and when you name it, place a period in the beginning of the name. So for example if you name your folder "Pictures" put ".Pictures" for the folder name. This will hide the folder. Have fun.

Very fun hahaha !

You haven't a good behavior Gasaraki-...shame on you !

Windows can see the hidden folder... Just have the "show hidden folders" option enabled on your machine.
Also if you have a file browser on your tablet like ES File Explorer, they can all see hidden folders.
Are you just pulling my leg?
You can also see hidden "dot" folders on the tablet in Root Explorer (you don't have to be rooted). Astro and few other explorers don't show them.

You must know how:
open the gallery
Long press any folder
select the folders you want to hide
open menu (with menu key)
select 'hide selection' (or something like)
done
PS. This only works with internal files and not with files on a sd-card ?!
That did it.

[Q] Screensaver Images

Does anyone know where the screensaver images come from? Are they files on the Fire TV or is it a feed from somewhere? I've done plenty of googling and searching these forums, even downloaded a system dump, but have not been able to find the source for these images.
They are downloaded. There is a bug that if you are using the mosaic mode, it won't cache the images and will eat a ton of network time. I've not tried that option and I don't know where it is downloading from.
Tip:You can clear the "photo" app cache to get rid of the massive 200MB+ of screensaver image caching.
Not sure if this helps or not, but you can designate a folder from your amazon cloud account to be used for the images.

Thanks for the info. There was 330mb stored in cache and was happy to clear it. I went into the screensaver options and turned it off. I am using [LAUNCHER] XBMC for Fire TV (Root) , http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2790392, as my XBMC launcher and see no need for it to be on.
There should be at least one app that will work on Fire TV for making a custom screensaver with your own images instead of bloating your storage space.
I wish there was an Android port or clone for the Windows 3D Maze screensaver, that would be so nostalgic.
..
I'm not looking to replace the images, I want to download them. I'd like to be able to use them on my desktop or my tablet. Is there a feed somewhere I can connect to?
If your Fire TV is rooted, you could probably copy the actual files from the screensaver's cache found in the "photos" app.
All you need is to find the right directory of the "photos" app data files, and look in the folders until you find them.
It will be very easy if the cache is 100MB+ since you can check folder properties for a large filesize.
And don't forget to actually make the screensaver run for a while until you've seen all of the images you want.
Make sure mosaic is disabled because the images will not be cached due to a known issue causing massive download overages for people on limited networks.
Hopefully those are actual images.
If not, maybe there is a way to extract them.
Having root allows you to use stickmount for USB storage so you can copy files into a Mass Storage USB stick.

Okay, for the record you can find the pictures in: /data/data/com.amazon.bueller.photos/cache/
They are in hexadecimal directory names, with a 2048 sub directory.
They are jpegs, but named .cloud.
I thought you needed to change the permissions to get them off the AFTV, but apparently Total Commander doesn't grasp the concept of root access, and I have it checked on in settings. ES File Explorer doesn't appear to have this problem (which is nice, except I really love the 2 pane file listings).
anyways, thought I'd share the info since I'm bothering with removing the pics for someone.
Is there a way to display google photos on the screen saver? Change launcher?

Point to local NAS
Is there a way to point to the local NAS and download your own Photos for screen savers.... happy to root if needed....
Cheers

We enjoy the pictures and try to guess where they are.
Just want something to say where they are. It's kind of a game with us.

How to delete all photos on Amazon Fire Phone?

I have several hundred pix on my Fire Phone and can't figure out how to delete them all at once - only one-by-one. Does anyone here know how? I can't find anything elsewhere on the net.
I don't remember FireOS, but did you try long-pressing a picture to be able to select more than one?
Use a file manager such as root explorer, or connect to a pc and do it that way?
Thanks. I did try the long press on a picture. It just pops up a "Share / Delete" choice for that one picture.
Deleting the pix via a PC connection is my last resort, as I'm afraid it might trash some internal phone database and leave me with a problem much worse than what I have now.
It's hard to believe that a modern phone that can hold hundreds of pictures wouldn't have some kind of "batch select" or multi-delete... so I'm hoping there's a smooth way.
If you've got play store use quickpic which allows batch select.
On a quasy-related thought--amazon is really bad at this it seems. I think the unlimited cloud photo storage is very generous but no one took the time to polish it a little. Can't seem to organize my pics so got pics of my kids running side by side with random podcast cover art and other things I don't want saved. It all displays on my fire TV screensaver. My wife thinks I'm an idiot just taking pictures of everything and saving them. But the op is right, you have to delete one by one.
Not necessarily. Like @ratbags said, you can install a file manager app (ES Explorer, Root Explorer, or the like), go to the DCIM folder and delete whatever you want to. Also, having a file manager app could help you when you're trying to not connect your phone to a PC as much as possible.
Thanks to all for the answers. I will probably get a file mgr though I need one only for this task. Silly Amazon to provide no simple way to delete pictures.
On the topic of what to delete: the images are in DCIM as noted, and there are thumbnails. I'll try deleting only the images and see if the phone takes care of the thumbs.
Install a file manager app, like ES file explorer, and turn off automatic uploading of pictures and videos if you do anything unwholsome in your life. Linux tricks work in android based operating systems too. I use ES file explorer and put a .nomedia file in Downloads and there is a Facebook folder under DCIM that you should do the same to. Now when you are out with that co-worker or whore, and get frisky with the camera, they won't automatically show up on your Amazon Fire TV in real time. Move what you don't want uploaded into a folder with a .nomedia file before saving your media to the cloud.

How to auto move folders with tasker.

Hi I need a little help if possible, I'm trying to find an app that will let me automove files and folders, I've found an app called "auto-move" that will move my files for me automatically but it doesn't move folders at all. So I need an app that can move folders to another location by the file(folder)name. I found the app called "tasker" and it seems like it might be able to do what I want but not sure as it's a bit of a headache for me to use, so is anyone experienced enough with "tasker" to help me?
Please keep in mind I have looked through a lot of guides but they all involve moving files and not folders.
I basically want to monitor a folder, and if that folder has other folders In it, it will move them to a certain location depending on folder name.
you can use other apps for this purpose, sync type apps like Synchronize Ultimate can sync folders and files to local and cloud network, create sync profiles but also has option to "delete from source after sync" and has plugin for tasker. So you may want to check those kind of apps.
I also found tasker difficult to handle and gave Automate a try, no complaints.

Thank you for the quick reply, yeah I figured it out now, I scrapped using tasker. I'm using auto-move to move the files to destination folder and using redirect pro to move files out of folders to the parent directory so auto-move can do its thing. I'm gonna check your suggestion as I'd prefer one app to do the job and by the sounds of it your will do the job
