[Q] How to enable unknown source ? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just loaded Showbox to my FTV, and the app needs to be updated, but I don't know how to enable unknown sources on this box.
Can this be done with the ADB command line.
or Can I copy the one from my android phone and use it, How can I backup my android apps to my pc?

Unfortunately, enabling unknown sources is not currently an option for us. Once its rooted, we should get that ability.

I upgraded the one on my phone, deleted the one on FTV and sideloaded the new updated apk. This worked but I had to re-ad all my favorites to my library.

Now that root is out this can be done by editing settings.db. Instructions in this post.

I'm hardly an expert at adb but if you do the install line " adb install -r filename.apk it will install over the previous app and retain all settings. That's how I update my XBMC.

[Q] How to install apps without wifi?

Hi, got my Kindle Fire but after first boot connecting to my wifi network and downloaded and installed the update. After that Wifi doesn´t work anymore... (just sometimes for some seconds) Tried to reinstall the Update and so on, but nothing solved my wifi problem.
whatever... I rooted my kindle Fire and also want to install some apps..
but to install the market or another app I need a File Manager.
Can´t download one cause my wifi doesn´t work...
So is it possible to install an app (e.g. file manager) without wifi?
Thanks!

Yes, via adb. Grab the adb package that makes up the rooting process and then you can do adb install blah.apk
You have a guide for a beginner?
Thanks!

not really, but maybe this will work:
Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1349652
Download adb.zip from that post.
Unzip it.
go into the directory.
run:
./adb-mac install blah.apk
If your on windows:
adb install blah.apk
You just need to make sure drop the .apk files you want to install into the same directory as adb. Makes it easier..otherwise you have to include the path to the .apk file:
./adb-mac install /var/tmp/blah.apk
Does that help?
Thanks! Worked fine Now I can do something with my kindle!

you still need a file manager in order to sideload wondermachine in the first place and without Wifi the only way to do that is via adb.
can you use sideload wondermachine without rooting the Fire and install apps that way? If so, how do you access those apps to install on the Fire?
this forum really needs to get some regulations, and proper rulings. Questions arent supposed to be in development.

To any and everyone who knows how. Which way is the proper way as of Today to root the kf2? To many videos and guides they confusing me and then when I tried a method i saw on youtube it wouldnt recognize my device but then again it was for the 6.3 version I believe. I need this rooted before christmas because I'm bought it to give as a gift but without root I feel like playing frisbee #frustrated
Took me 10seconds to find this thread which works for the KF(2) (also reported for the 10.2.4 firmware)...just follow the steps (before make sure you got the right adb driver installed) and you device should be rooted!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035334
Can`t understand why people don't use the search option, even when i type in google "kindle 10.2.3 root" i`ll get a solution for it!
Ill try here n a minute I did actually search just to make it known my version is 10.2.1

OK so I just tried and it does NOT recognize my device I installed drivers uninstalled drivers and re installed them again AND I dl the drivers that came in the Qemu root method and like always my laptop says that the drivers are already installed and when I click next anyway it tells me I have latest version .....What gives maaaaaaan? #headache
I found that I had to plug out the kindle. Un install the device from device manager. Then with adb already enabled plug it back in. Then it should fail to automatically install the driver from there you can install.

worked for the latest version
How I re-rooted the KF2 after much aggrivation and little sleep
Actually, I just re-rooted but, was not that simple. Had to do some manual commands using adb to push su and whatnot. Took several fails, too.
Credits to all of XDA-devs
First thing you have to do tho is: Navigate to your Android SDK folder and download the newer drivers for the KF2 then update the drivers in Windows. Launch "Android SDK Manager" then click Tools then "Manage Addon Sites". In the next window, click the tab at the top titled, "User Defined Sites". Then, click "New" and add this line:
http://kindle-sdk.s3.amazonaws.com/addon.xml
Click to collapse
Next: install the Gen 2 drivers and anything else you are missing from the Android 4.0.3 package.
Then: Using "Device Manager" in Windows, update the drivers for your Kindle and reboot your computer.
Then, do this: Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v18
Then use this: tf101_ics_root.zip
Then download this:
Then: unzip or unrar that and take "Superuser.apk" from the system\app folder and "su" from system\bin and paste them in the
"adt-bundle-windows\sdk\platform-tools" directory.
Then while in "adt-bundle-windows\sdk\platform-tools", hold "Shift" while right-clicking anywhere in the folder that is empty and choose, "Open Command Window Here"
In the Command Window:
Code:
adb devices
adb shell
rm -r /data/local/tmp
ln -s /data/ /data/local/tmp
exit
adb reboot
adb devices
adb shell
echo 'ro.kernel.qemu=1' > /data/local.prop
exit
adb reboot
adb devices
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /system
adb push su /system/xbin/su
adb shell
chown 0.0 /system/xbin/su
chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su
rm /data/local.prop
exit
adb reboot
adb install Superuser.apk
You should now be rooted. Open the superuser app and make sure it's up to date and working.
If after any of these commands you get "permissions denied" you have to start over.
I'll attach that "Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip" at the bottom here:

I had the same issue. I updated SDK, uninstalled all drivers, unplugged the fire2. Then in SDK went to tools, manage addon sites, selected user defined sites, added new and copied: http://kindle-sdk.s3.amazonaws.com/addon.xml, then ok, close, scrolled to the botom of SDK manager, under extras there were 2 kindle fire options, I selected both and installed them, then closed SDK manager.
I wen to the folder were SDK resides, then folder: extras\amazon\kindle_fire_usb_driver and installed the fire USB drivers, then pluged in the kindle, then execute the instructions posted here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2051270) and everything worked like a charm. I hope this works for you! (BTW this solution was developed by someone else can't remember who, but I founded it, used it and shared it).

Side loading apps.

Since we cannot get to other sources to install an app on firetv I've been using adb and my win7 pc.
I think I saw another method posted, installing apks already on tablet. I could not find it, and I don't think it used this method. My apologies for not crediting someone else if that's what I'm doing.
I installed "AnySend" and "Terminal Emulator" using adb and pc.
I sent app via any send to firetv.
Ran terminal keyboard very helpful if not needed
Used ls and cd to navigate to Any Send dir.
adb kill-server
adb start-server
"daemon started"
adb install "side loaded apk name"
If installed "success"
ls list directory contents
cd "name" changes directory

Yeah, I saw that, but with my way I don't need a computer, just my rooted nexus 5. I thought the OP was looking for a way to do this without a computer.
Thanks for replies. I'm lazy. I see an app I want to install. I send file from my tablet to fire tv using any send. Many other programs will work I just like this one. open terminal, navigate to install directory, use adb to install. Seems pretty simple.

I'm a little rusty on adb commands and would appreciate any assistance. Thanks!

You may need to just give it some time, it took a good 10 minutes or so for it to finish anything for me over bluetooth. It just sat at the prompt without giving me status information or anything.

abd won't let you put anything in /data or /system, as it's not running in root mode.
You have to push it to /storage/sdcard0/ then enter an adb shell, get root with su, remount /system and copy the zip from /storage/sdcard0/ to /system/media/
So what can we do with this

[Q] any way of saving images to storage without root?

ok, something really simple somebody may be able to help me with, not sure if its possible, but i want to store a few images onto my fire tv, so i can use them with my xbmc setup as wallpapers, my device isnt rooted, as its the uk version that got sent out today, ive installed dropbox, and es file explorer but their is no option to save. anybody know if this is possible? its driving me crazy. ive also tried uploading with the amazon cloud drive app, the pictures show up on the photo section on my home screen, but thats it... is their any way i would find these in the root access?
thanks
I think you should be able to use adb to push them to the SD card. Try one of the fireTV utility apps for a GUI.

Connect to the Fire TV via ADB (WIndows guide and Mac guide)
Then use the command:
Code:
adb push C:\path\to\image.jpg \sdcard\
This will transfer any file from your PC to the \sdcard\ directory of your Fire TV. Root is not needed.
You guys are the best... Thank a lot!

The command is slightly different between Mac and Windows. The command I gave you is for Windows. Here is what you should enter since you're on a Mac:
First, change to the directory where you have adb by running this command:
Code:
cd /Users/channy/Desktop/platform-tools/
Then move the file to your Fire TV by running this command:
Code:
./adb push /Users/channy/Desktop/platform-tools/wallpapers/Breaking-Bad-Simpsons-2362199.jpg /sdcard/

Awesome. Glad you got it working! And glad you're enjoying the site.
Here are a couple tips:
If you move the adb file from the platform-tools folder into your /Users/channy/ folder, you can just open terminal and start running "./adb" commands without first doing the "cd..." command.
Also, on mac you can drag and drop files into the terminal window instead of typing the full path to the file. For this case you would type "./adb push ", then drag the image onto the terminal, then type " /sdcard/". Note the space at the end of the first part and the beginning of the second part.

Even better.. Thankyou for that info. Whilst I caught you online.. Little off topic but do I need to block OTA updates? I plan on eventually rooting when/if it becomes available. And if so... The only way I can do this as I'm on stock firmware would be to use the block domain methods with my router?

If you have any interest in rooting it's always best to block updates. At the very least that way you can choose whether you want to install the update or not.
If you're not rooted, your best option is to block the update domains via your router. If that isn't something you can do, you can always sign up for a free OpenDNS account and block the domains that way. You would just need to enter the OpenDNS DNS IP addresses into your Fire TV's settings, just like in this guide.
