[Q] Using 4g in UK with Asian Desire 816 - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am a old hand on the Android system but incredible new to rooting and flashing so please bare with me on this.
I have bought a HTC Desire 816 Dual Sim which shipped from Dubai but is set for Vietnam according to HTC. The phone on all parts works fine apart from I can't use the UK 4g network. I have used the code *#*#4636#*#* to look at phone info and the option is there for lte but still only getting 3G
I am looking to Root the phone and install a custom rom/stock UK rom but will this let me access the UK 4g network?
According to HTC and seller the phone can do the right bands in the uk but how or if I can is beyond me.
Thank you in advance to anyone who is willing to help

Dear D179, you did indeed mention in the first post that your phone is dual sim model. As a thumb rule, no dual sim mobiles are 4G capable so far. You could only get 3G or H+ speeds on the first sim and only 2G or G on the second sim. May be in the future dual sim mobiles could be 4G capable.
Also, rooting and unlocking does not help you at all to get the 4G capability as it should have a radio that should be 4G compatible in your mobile phone, but all dual sim mobiles are only 3G capable radios.
You might find a custom rom for the single sim version of HTC 816 desire mobile (EU or UAE models), and after installing you can see that your network is getting 4G speeds, but it is all not real. Just the icon will say 4G but indeed you get the 3G speed only. Most of all, the custom single sim rom does not work properly on the dual sim model.

I can't really thank you enough for your response.
What confused me as to it's capabilities was because there are many sellers on the internet saying that they are selling 4G enabled dual sim Desire 816's but when I delved deeper in to specs after reading your post, the reputable companies did not show the phone going beyond WCDMA H+.
It is strange however that on the phones secret menu that it shows the LTE option? Is this because the setup is same as single sim but dual is missing something?

Never thought to try just LTE option and your right, won't let me select.
Well still going to root this phone but I feel happier that I can put the 4G to bed and forget about that now.
Thanks everyone for all your assisstance. :victory:

I live in the 4G enabled network area, but I never I got the speeds greater than H+. Very rarely it touched 3G and occasionally it shows just the H speeds too. I have downgraded from Xperia Z to this one only for its dual SIM ability, but still enjoying some of its features. Only the single SIM versions in this model are 4G capable.
As you guessed, the settings menu and infact many other menu features are same between the single and dual SIM mobiles. The appropriate fields of the mobiles will get highlighted and rest will be just dummies or greyed out.
Rooting is the best thing in Android. Enjoy your mobile after rooting installing ad away or ad free to get rid of annoying adverts in some apps. Enjoy the xposed app as well which unlocks the endless tweaking opportunities I your phone.

Question about importing..

Ok, this is for all you guys who have imported before. i have never by the way. When the phone arrives and you insert your sim card, att/tmobile for example. will the phone automatically pick up the required signals to stay on your carrier and not roam to another? or do you have to set it to us what you want only?
Also one of the reasons i am choosing this phone is to have a phone that will be ready and capable of handling att's eventual takeover of tmobile. I would imagine that you will have to get an att sim card when that happens. But it is nice to be prepared Thanx
EDIT> NEW QUESTION ADDED....
Ok I should have asked this but it just crossed my mind.lol.. Since the phone is being imported will everything work correctly? Will I get the Us version of the market, etc?
Also is anyone else afraid of day one bugs?
yes, it's governed by the sim card. you put in an at+t sim card, it'll look for an at+t signal. same with tmobile.
eric b
Well, the T-mobile SIM card will connect you to the T-mo network. The opposite for AT&T SIM card
It has pentaband HSPA+ though, so you'll get full speed with both networks.
Lol ok, seems simple enough. What confused me was i remember on my nexus s, there was a clickable box that allowed me to switch between the two. So i figured id ask

And I'm sure you're thinking of just enabling data roaming. Just remember that if you're using a T-mo SIM card, your phone can't just magically start using AT&T for no reason...

Sure, you could click Network operators and see both networks listed. You would be denied from connecting to the network that doesn't match your SIM though.
Is the knownledge really so bad about GSM in the US that this seems like some kind of dark magic? It must really suck to be so controlled by the carriers whim. You can see it like terrestrial TV. When searching for channels you will pick up all channels that are broadcast (providing the signal is good enough) but you can't actually watch them unless you pay for them.

Yes, it is this bad. No one knows how it works. Not their fault, its the fact that they think that the carriers are the ones that make the phones and give them to consumers, rather than the consumers purchasing phones and using the carriers as dumb network providers.
Ok. Ok... I figured it to be that way, but i wanted to make sure. Like i said i have never imported :/

Just remember, it doesn't matter where in the world the phone comes from. If it supports the bands for the Network/SIM you're using, just put in your SIM and don't worry about it lol. Don't think of it as being an "international" phone. Its just a GSM phone.

I was on T-mobile USA a few years ago when living in the States; started off with pre-paid and moved to a contracct plan. From what I remember, the pre-paid SIM cards don't let you roam on Cingular/AT&T but the contract SIM would. It depends on inter-carrier arrangements so it's best to ask a T-mobile rep about this.
And in doubt, I'd suggest disabling data roaming if you're in area where you can't reliably connect to your normal carrier!

There was a reason why I wasn't posting anything here. I knew stuff in US was a bit different....... So like what hircus said, ask a T-mobile rep.....
In Malaysia where I live, the only contract phones that actually sell in great numbers is the iPhone. Our contracts plans are quite bad and buying an unlocked phone and putting your own SIM card is a cheaper on the long run. Oh, (not too sure for the iPhone), in Malaysia when you buy a phone on contract, the phone is not "locked" to a specific carrier... go figure......
Ok I should have asked this but it just crossed my mind.lol.. Since the phone is being imported will everything work correctly? Will I get the Us version of the market, etc?
yes, the market is sim card dependent you'll get the US market and services (like google voice), no worries.

You won't have this option available unless you carrier unlock your phone. They're available on ebay for like $3. I had mine unlocked pretty much immediately after it arrived.
ATT Atrix 4G on T-Mobile UK was also showing WCDMA. Just another label for UMTS.

Is unlocking the phone as simple as entering a code? And is it reversible (if ever necessary)?
NCK unlocking is completely legal, permanent, doesn't void your warranty, and you're not hacking your device in any way. You don't need to worry about reversing it. It is as simple as entering a code
But it's also unnecessary unless you plan on switching carriers or traveling overseas and popping in a new SIM.

Unlocking a phone is NOT reversible. Its ONLY for putting another sim card from another carrier in ur phone to use it on another network. And using a AT&T sim card Its still just greyed out. I have to use my Orange UK sim to be able to do a network search.. And that UK sim lets me use 3G data on AT&T`s network
Like above u can see I was running on the T-Mobile Network as well
Thanks for the info guys. I guess I won't worry about unlocking it unless I plan to sell it.

I317M - LTE not working

I just hopped on the Note 2 wagon from a GS2. It's been only 2 days, but love it so far. Only problem, I can't seem to be able to acces LTE even though i'm in an urban area where LTE is available. Coverage is good here with Bell Canada. I know with my GS2 i was able to go in the Band Selection Service Menu, to choose the band i wanted to use. Is there such menu with the I317M? Or is there another way to select LTE?
Thanks!
No toggle to turn it on or off as far as I know. Does LTE work in other locations?
Moved around the city with no luck only H+.
Are you using an LTE micro SIM with the Note2?
I worked as a cellphone dealer, you must be on an LTE data plan with a LTE sim card to receive LTE. Call bell to verify you have an lte capable sim card and are on an lte plan.

As long as you're on a postpaid plan with at least 500 MB of data /month, you are eligible for LTE with an LTE capable phone and micro SIM. Bell's LTE micro SIM card is labeled "LTE".

Another thing to check is to make your APN is set up correctly for Lte. Hope you get the problem fixed!

I went to Bell Store at lunch. Exchanged my microSIM for another one with the mention of LTE on it. Now, my phone can receive and transmit in LTE with no problem.
Thanks everyone.
After reading through this thread I too swapped out an old SIM for a new one. But my problem was calls dropping or going straight to voicemail and lte not working in areas but my husbands would work. Got the new SIM card yesterday haven't missed a call, connecting to lte is fast and steady and a bonus is my phone seems to be a little more snappier then b4 like when closing and opening apps or watching youtube videos. Thanks OP for making this tread or else I might not have figured out what was wrong with my phone.

Will ASUS ZenFone 2 ZE500CL 4G LTE work on Verizon's network?

Hey guys, hoping that someone can help me out here. I am a long Verizon Galaxy Nexus user and am ready to retire it, but keep my unlimited data. My question is will this phone work on Verizon's network. Can someone shed some insight on this, because I'm ready for the upgrade.

If you get a 4G LTE sim card, it should work, but you will not be able to fall back on Verizon's CDMA network.

Appreciate the quick response! You say I won't be able to fall back to Verizons CDMA (3G) network, but looking at the description of the phone it has all of Verizons CDMA capabilities.
Single-SIM;3G WCDMA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100;4G LTE 700 / 900 / 1800 (FDD 3, 8, 28)
Also, isn't it true that Verizon plans on moving to pure LTE?

I checked my Asus Zenfone 2 and Verizon says not compatible.
I will say, I have been very happy on T-Mobile.

WCDMA is NOT the same as CDMA.
It's confusing, but let me explain.
3G (or UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+) uses technology that is based on CDMA..but it's called Wideband CDMA (WCDMA)...whereas Sprint and Verizon just use "regular" CDMA.....so this phone WILL NOT WORK with Verizon CDMA.
So with active Sim can use the zenfone 2 on Verizon. But no service in 3g areas?

no, I bought one without thinking about compatability, put my SIM card in, it recognized the card but it would not find service. The device had a 'network finder' in settings and found ATT, but not VZ. I called up support to see if there was ANY way to make it work, no. The ZF2 will not work at all on Verizon. Had to ship it back... :crying:
ZenFone2 (ZE551ML) will work on GSM carrier's networks in North America. However, CDMA carriers such as Verizon and Sprint do not work with this device. The 2 major GSM carriers here in the USA are AT&T and T-Mobile. For more info please see our FAQ and Zenfone Quick Service support sites:

I don't have one of these handsets so I cannot confirm this will solve radio programming problems this device probably exhibits. The problem with affordable great phones is they hamper Verizon's other handsets and therefore threaten the business model. Sad times, but this is what has me waiting patiently for the market of blok phones to appear.

Man i really hate Verizon! However i live in the middle of nowhere and Verizon is the only service we can use. Verizon never gets any good phones or if it does it makes sure it pressures the manufacturer into locking them down.
It's not just about the phones being locked but CDMA and GSM using different hardware and software. Most of the LTE phones sold by Verizon and Sprint are unlocked however you still need correct hardware and software to make it work on GSM networks. To say nothing of the least of making sure you have the correct bands.
If you're wanting this phone because of its dual sim, you need to pass. This phone used subpar and outdated hardware on Sim 2 and is firmware blocked for data using only 2G for voice/text. 2G is already being shut down by AT&T in the states and T-Mobile is following. This "Flagship" dual sim phone is actually going to be a single sim phone for those of us in the states in about a year. I got suckered and am now looking for another phone. There are plenty of companies out there offering up to date hardware at the same price.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 Global (9.6.7.0) Freedom Mobile LTE?

Hello
I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with the Global version the Mi Max 3. Did i make a mistake of purchasing a Freedom Mobile LTE incompatible phone? Or it should be asking myself whether this is really the Global Version?
Boot-loader seems locked, box in proper English with UK adapter, that makes me think its the Global version.
When i put my sim card in Data works, SMS works, but no phone calls in or out, even tho in the Network options Freedom is fully detected as the HOME network.
Any ideas?

No, I'm in Brazil and here are other operators. These are the bands that the unit has:
2G bands GSM 850/900/1800/1900 - SIM 1 & SIM 2

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news my friend but yes, you did just buy a phone incompatible with Freedom Mobile as I just did the same lol. Yes, messaging and data does work but you'll never get phone calls to work. I was wondering if it was worth sticking with Freedom anyways because of the deals but in the end I decided to switch over to Fido which works fine with the Mi Max 3. Also the version I have is def the Global Version (9.6.7.0) as I checked on the official website.

Haha yeah closure def makes things easier to handle. Tbh the phone is good enough that if you don't make a lot of phone calls it's still worth it but the problem for me is that in order to unlock your bootloader you need to get permission from Xiaomi. In order to get permission you need to have your device linked with your Mi Account. And in order to to that a confirmation text has to be sent (think Whatsapp). However, even tho you can send a text normally this automatic one fails to send on the Freedom network. So basically if you want to do any rooting whatsoever you'll need a SIM from somewhere like Rogers or Fido which ended up being the deciding factor for me aha.
If you have no plans on rooting then you should be fine :good:
Your phone should connect on LTE band 4 with Freedom Mobile. Mine connects flawlessly on LTE bands 4 and 7 with Telus.
