What Nexus 6? I thought Google scrapped that project and are looking to have a Google Silver phone in the works.

Burke could be referring to the HTC tablet. I'm not hold my breath for a Nexus 6, and since I'm on Verizon anyway...

Just wait next year you can buy the G4 or the next next Nexus.
If I were you I'd wait for the LG G19 or the Nexus 28, they will be a lot better than the G3.

Hi F4M0U569. Quite a really good question - I still evaluate pros and cons. My G3 should be delivered today but I see the Nexus 6 at the end of the year.
I don't think the Nexus 6 smartphone would be a younger and slightly adjusted G3, as much others do right now. I believe, Google won't bring a smartphone reference platform - this is what the Nexus devices are - with an "old" 32 bit Snapdragon 801 when the new Android system was released with the advantage of a 64 bit system.
But if you need a new device for whatever reason (old one is defect/too slow, you're just so delighted/happy and freaking out because of this new device - like me), than just buy it. If you can wait, wait until you need a new device. Don't wait for the next big step. As soon as you have the new device, it's ready to go to the museum soon.

I can only give my opinion from the Nexus 5 situation that I had.
Prior to buying a nexus 5 I had a Galaxy S4 then after switching to the Nexus 5 although a great phone I realised that it is simply a trimmed down version of the G2 with different button placement.
I the case of the G3 I think what you have already is maybe an idea of what the next Nexus may be. I know LG are developing it but specs wise I cannot see the Nexus 6 beating the G3 by much or if at all.
The only real decider is the software with the Nexus being a pure android device. But as we are on XDA I think we all understand the power of the devs and community. There will be ROMs for the G3 that will be able to provide the same experience soon enough.
My thoughts anyway
Nexus = mid range phones
The only advantage I see with nexus phones are the fast updates, so if updates are not super important for you go for the G3

The recent Nexus devices are indeed mid range phones/tablets when you think about the prize. The hardware can compete with other flagship devices at the time they're released to the market. :laugh:

Normally where nexus phones fall behind is screen, battery life and camera & those aspects are very important when choosing a new phone

Hi All,
I currently have a Motorola Milestone (international version of the droid) and I was wondering if I should update to the Galaxy Nexus. Acknowledging the fact that I can only classify my phone as "usable" if I have a rom which runs Froyo and is overclocked from 550mhz to 1GHz (The Froyo Mod by 89luca89). As a result of these tweaks and the overclock, my phone only lasts about 6-7 hours with a considerable amount of usage which is far to little for my expectations. I live in Canada and if I were to get a new phone it would at least be on a 2 year contract on Bell. Looking at the specs of the Galaxy Nexus it doesn't compare too much above the competition, and in terms of raw specs I believe that some competitors could easily surpass the performance of the Galaxy Nexus which essentially means that eventually, it won't be as great and would compare to other products (e.g. iPhone 2G against iPhone 4).
Okay, so at this point it seems as though I have made my decision to wait for longer but....
Although the Galaxy Nexus compared to a lot of the other competition seems to have underwhelming specs, it is still the first ice cream sandwich phone which Google and Samsung collaborated upon which means that the software would be tailored specifically for the hardware and vice versa. Also, I believe that the developer base would probably be extremely huge because of the number of consumers purchasing this product and the huge interest for developers with the newest version of Android. ( I mean look at the Nexus One!) Now another probem that I see with the Galaxy Nexus is that the GPU is 4 years outdated so it might not be the best phone to get but then again how many games do you really play on your phone? (I think the GPU is identical to the GPU in the Nexus S but apparently the processor is more-so tailored for multitasking and better performance, but not gaming)
As you can clearly see I'm at cross-roads and I seriously need some opinions.
My question to you guys is:
Should I get the Galaxy Nexus (on Bell's network) when it comes out in Canada or should I wait for a successor or a faster alternative such as the Samsung Galaxy S3.

specs are only part of a phone, motorola likes locking down their phones pretty tight, and god knows how they will provide updates

The specs are pretty similar to the Galaxy Nexus, and I'd assume that the Galaxy Nexus would have much more developers which is good for me because I love mods, themes, roms, etc. Also I honestly don't want to wait that long to get ice cream sandwich and also motorola might ruin the entire experience if they add blur.

As a fellow MS owner looking to upgrade, MOTO can take the RAZR and shove it. Never again will I buy a MOTO phone after dealing with the whole droid = unlocked, ms = locked. And MOTO has said they will lock down the RAZR, so forget that.
I'm getting a nexus prime or a xiaomi M-1

I am also a Milestone owner. I will NEVER buy another motorola product again. Locked Bootloader, sold as a "flash ready" phone with 2.1!?! Finally updates to 2.2 8 months later and the build is soo bad the phone practically can't be used (DSI Errors).
Really my question now is, Nexus or GS2? I was really hoping for the exynos in the nexus.

I wouldn't get the GS2 though I would rather go for something like the Rezound just because it seems like old news now But I'm now debating whether fire power is more important or a higher developer base (in terms of both apps and roms) and newer OS
search for my post on the sub par hardware thread in the GN general forums. u will be convinced.
If you want a phone that doesn't get outdated fast, the Galaxy Nexus is the choice because you are guaranteed to get the latest update directly from Google in a timely manner.
The NS will surely lasts you 1.5 to 2 years and it will be one of the first phones to get the next version of Android next year.
The Nexus S is still one of the best phones out there with the latest software while other older high spec phones are crying to their manufacture for updates.
I would just say this for a point of view as a Nexus S users
If you spend time hacking and rooting your phone to rip off what ever manufactured skinned into your phone get the nexus
If you like speedy updates with new OS's get the nexus
The nexus s dev section might look slow to some people, but thats cause everything doesnt need to be fixed, its been a treat not to have the feeling to flash a rom to update a bug, its great.

But from a hardware perspective the Galaxy Nexus isn't very strong. I wanted to get something along the lines of the new Exynos processor and certainly not that 4 year old gpu which I doubt could render games at such a high resolution. I might be looking to get the new Samsung galaxy s 2, the one with LTE and apparently theres an new one with a 1.6GHz exynos processor I think. Nonetheless, thanks for your reply

It's all up to you for what you think is more important.
I would take the pure Android experience, guaranteed timely updates over better spec on paper. The real world performance might be differ as ICS is optimized for the OMAP instead of the Exynos.
I would still take my Nexus S over any non Nexus device out there on the market today.
There is a reason that samsung has sold more android phones than motorola.
Better Hardware, better software.

Not sure about Samsung against Motorola but Samsung's software generally sucks. That's the reason I want to avoid Galaxy S2 and get a Galaxy Nexus.

Agreed. I really do hate TouchWiz with a passion.
I flashed CM7 on my SGS2 and loving it over the stock TW rom, also if there are some bugs (like BT sleep problem, and headphone volume that don't go higher than 50% closed source thinghs) but is blazing fast and customizable.
I will never go back again on stock Sams rom, that's why I'm getting a Nexus also if I'm disappointed on the hardware part.
For sure the sgs3 will be a kick ass, but sgs2 buyer's know that some battery eating bugs was solved from developers, after several months (Android OS process).
Well these is my opinion I can be wrong against some of you for sure, but as someone sayd I prefer flexibility and customisation over pure power, and I don't play games on a phone, so for me the Nexus is a must this year.

Hey all, I've been a member here on XDA for almost 3yrs now and I've frequented multiple sections depending on the device(s) I was/am using at the time.
I have to say, the Galaxy Nexus community is by far my favorite hands down.
So I ask, Who can I expect to see in the next nexus section when google releases the 2013 iteration of the Nexus Flagship Device?
I really am hoping a lot of you that I have grown to love chatting with all are there with me. I passed on the Nexus 4 because frankly, I don't see enough innovation over my Gnex to deem it worth purchasing, thus why I am waiting for the follow-up device we most likely can all expect come around November of this year.
I just cannot see myself getting anything but a Google flagship vanilla phone after owning this fantastic device, nothing compares to the development, themes, kernels etc available. Not to mention we get the newest versions of everything first as well.
Anyway, Who's gonna be in the new forum right there with me when the "Nexus 5 aka 2013 Nexus" arrives?
*on a sidenote, I can only imagine what the AOSPA Team and AK Team is going to bring to the table.

Not a fan of LG but Samsung makes a quality phone in a lightweight container. I have never liked Motorola, always found their devices to be crap (just my opinion though). Sony or HTC for the next Nexus device and I'll be a happy camper. Although, I will get one if Samsung makes it again too.
Who am I kidding, if it's a nexus device google oversees the whole process so I will buy it regardless of the brand.

Prob not me. My next phone will have one of those monster batteries like the Note or Maxx does. That + unloackable bootloader + active dev comminuty will be priorities on my next phone purchase. But I'm not in much of a hurry right now.
I'm more interested in what chip is going to be in it. The S4 is already dated so I'm curious what Google is going to use for a fHD display device.
I honestly dont know what to expect. They could throw out anything like a thin phone with a 2.1 GHz processor and 6 GB ram. Who knows. I expect it to be innovative though.

I will most likely be getting the next one also. I was still 50/50 on getting the Nexus 4 but since I wasn't able to purchase one at launch time, I made a deal with myself that if I wasn't able to get one by the end of January then I might as well wait for the next one...which I will be doing (unless something better comes out ( the xperia Z is calling my name though)).
So we shall see how it goes.

Nexus 5 will be my next phone, I gave up on nexus 4 because basically its completly based off the lg optimus g so nothing inspiring done on lg's part there an the fact it was impossible to get as it sold out then rumours they are ramping down production on them so soon after launching it, I just hope the nexus 5 won't be a repeat of the nexus 4 launching an sell out so quickly because of limited stock.

I don't post much, but this is what I have been thinking about lately.
I have had this Gnex for just over a year now and love the device. I have been trying different ROMs fairly often, and like that the software release is for the nexus first before other handsets.
So I will be getting the next nexus device regardless of who it is made by. With so many people upset by the quality of the current nexus 4, I really can't see Google leaving it the same quality for the next handset.
Also at the moment I don't feel the nexus 4 is enough of a step up from my nexus to warrant a change, but I think the next device will be. Just hope it is more than 16gb of storage.

I am quite disappointed with how things turn out at Google I/O event regarding Google announcement of Galaxy S4 device.
First there is nothing wrong with Galaxy S4 but in my country there are no I9505 (Snapdragon variant) available. I 'assume' this to be the device that Google intend to support since it is available in the US. This kinda turn me off purchasing S4. Not sure how many people really care about this but for me it is a deal breaker and I am for one will not purchase S4 octacore device.
I was hoping to upgrade my Galaxy Nexus, not that it urgently needed upgrading, since it is still fast and very usable especially with my current Rom/Kernel setup (Purity 5.4.1 + AK latest nightly) but I was hoping for something with longer battery life. HTC One / Xperia z/ S4 all clocked it at around 3-4+ hours of heavy usage, that is only slightly better than my current GN.
How do you guys feel. Has Google made the right decision to partner with Samsung and not releasing a new device this year?

Nexus 5 is impossible, look at past trends.
And the s4 ge is not a nexus device, it's just AOSP supported..

What is expected is a updated nexus 7, which did not come out as of today, there is still 2 days of I/o, who knows what will happen..

I don't think this year's Nexus is functionally the S4. I'm guessing that a real Nexus will come out this year. It's just that the S4 will also run AOSP, unlike what the S line has done in the past. Nexus phones usually come out later in the year. I was kind of expecting a 2nd generation Nexus 7, but oh well.
IO had updates to a lot of existing apps. Hangouts was a little lackluster, but the Books and Music apps got big updates, and it looks like the Maps app will get one soon. And there's the new IDE and the Games framework might be quite nice. So I'm actually not all that disappointed.

Me and you both. I'm leaning towards the Note3 unless a better option is available by September.

Ntm who's going to run out and buy a legacy device lol
I've been waiting for I/O to see what I want to do about my upgrade. I've been eligible for one since last August. Currently on Verizon so I was also hoping for a cdma nexus 5 or something. Not really into the S4. I mean it's nice, but the price tag is a little high for me personally. I get paid the day after tomorrow and I'm seriously considering picking up a Google nexus 4 on a straight talk plan. Then again if they do announce something new (maybe even later this year?) Like a new CDMA nexus I will be pretty upset I cancelled and lost my grandfathered unlimited data.
I love my gnex, but playing newer games or heavy multitasking, you kinda realize how old it is.... What do you guys think?
Why would anyone in their right mind expect a nexus 5 at I/o every nexus phone to date has been released in October, and it is still only 6 months since the nexus 4 was released.
I was, however, a little disappointed not to see a nexus 7 upgrade and android 4.3, but given all the leaks, it seams 4.3 simply got delayed and we'll probably see it at some point this summer.

Like a new CDMA nexus I will be pretty upset I cancelled and lost my grandfathered unlimited data.
I love my gnex, but playing newer games or heavy multitasking, you kinda realize how old it is.... What do you guys think?

Hang in there. There's still hope Motorola will come through with something unlocked, stock, and hot for all carriers. And no, I'm not talking about the XFON, that was revealed to have mid-grade specs. Perhaps it's big brother though, which is rumored to be launching for all carriers with similar specs to that of the newer super phones.
I'm in the same boat as you, have been sitting on my upgrade since December hoping for some news or acknowledgement of things for come for our CDMA network...

Saw some speculation on Android Central that Google may be moving in the direction of annual update cycles now that Android has achieved a degree of maturity and polish. I am a little dubious. Part of what has made Android great up to this point has been the fact that we don't have to wait a year for updates. Two or three updates annually keeps things fresh. I would speculate that it also helps to keep the development community involved since there is always a new challenge to be tackled, but not necessarily at the expense of all of the hard work that went into the previous iteration. Just my 2ยข.

There is no arguments over here, just correcting misinformation. Unless you are trying to tell me Nexus One is not a nexus device, then fine.

It was a pretty blah I/O from our consumer standpoint. It looks decent from a Developer one.
I wanted to see a N5 and updated tablets also. The S4 at $650 does not interest me at all. My GN can still do everything I want it to well.

The s4 costs $848 here so consider yourself lucky you get it for $650, i don't think s4 will outsell iPhone 5 at that price, well at least not off contract, s4 looks just like my friends s3 an its already been said that its a measly upgrade from the s3 an not worth upgrading to s4 if you already own a s3, kind of like gnex to lg n4 , if your looking for something completely new i suggest waiting out for the next nexus an hoping it delivers

The S3 to S4 is a fairly large upgrade compared to the GNEX to N4. The S4 improved on virtually every aspect of the device and even shrunk the dimensions while increasing the screen size. They improved the screen, battery, camera, processor, GPU, ergonomics and added features. How is that a measly upgrade...?
I find it hard to understand that people want a complete overhaul of the devices looks in order for it be considered an "upgrade".
If they were to radically change up the overall look of the S5 people would make a million threads *****ing about the changes...

I mean G3 have the LG sense how customization, is possible put one pure google rom?

Depends on variant at the moment. If your coming from a nexus. My god. Lol. You might want to grab nexus 6...it's the phone of phones at the moment I'm my tastes.

Now that the bootloader has been bypassed it just a matter of time before we get some pure google roms.
Only happened recently though so bare with us.
Id still choose the G3 over the Nexus 6 now that ive seen what it is.

If the nexus 6 was 5 inch or a bit bigger, should be the better device!

Yes i own a G3, but i didnt buy one for a long time untill i got more info about the nexus 6
Glad i went with what i did - every day the phone blows me away 2 weeks in and it aint lost its wow factor yet.
Anyone heard anything about the note 4 getting the android L update?
This is all hypothetical but should be soon, they have been releasing build videos on their youtube channel with progress on the S4, S5 etc. The Moto X and G3 I think just got the update and I'd imagine Samsung is hot on their tail. Lets hope soon!

No phone has received Lollipop yet, except the Nexus 6 - previews of it are popping up on different devices (G3, MotoX, S5, etc) - they haven't been released to the public yet - I would expect that they need more time to test the software.

Select 2014 Moto X users who are signed up as soak testers for Motorola have received a test build of Android L. It's not publicly available to all. Like BizzLeonDaCouch said, previews are popping up in places, but as of today, no phone outside of the Nexus 6 officially has a final, public version of it.
I think we should see it Q2 of 2015.

Odd thing is samsung has sent teaser pics out of a note 4 with lolipop.
You would think that in doin that they would'nt be getting it to is soon.

suckrizon is both difficult, and easy to say.
You know we'll get 5.0. You also know Verizon will be among the last, and it'll be everywhere by then.
When i had s4 verizon pushed 4.3 i think quickly due to galaxy gear watch and lolipop seems important update all phone makers are jumping onto updating the phones.
I think it might be much quicker maybe by end of year.

I agree that Verizon's overall track record has been horrible with timely updates, but over the past year, they've released updates to some of the latest flagships much quicker than in the past. For instance, the Verizon S5 was one of the first anywhere to get an update to 4.4.4, even before the unlocked international version.
OS updates are the same as always...a couple of months after then International device gets it depending on carrier. So watch the International Note 4 forum for when they start getting OTA and then you know you only have a few months to wait.
