How To Tether Free on AT&T Android 4.4.2 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

1. Go to Settings --> More --> Tab on Application Manager
2. Go to All tab (By scrolling Vertically)
3. Find AT&T Hot Spots and click it
4. When App info opens, click Turn off
Now AT&T Hotspot is turned off (The above steps just to ensure that AT&T hotspot is off
5. Download RootBrowser and the attached file and save to your phone. Know exactly where you saved it, so you can use it later on.
6. Browse to System/app and rename TetheringProvision.apk and TetheringProvision.odex . Rename the apk and odex to*.bak*(This way, you can rename them back in case the steps did not work for you)
7. After you finish replacing the files, go to your folder where you saved the attached file and copy it to system/app & change permissions to same as the other file you renamed
7. Reboot your phone.
8. Enjoy using foxfi app or any tether app
You cant use the phone settings hotspot but atleast you can tether free on 4.4.2 alot of people are still on unlimited plan so this helps alot

Just throwing a couple things out there.....
1. Have you tried this without changing file permissions after the copy?
2. The file is not foxfi.... Foxfi is a different app. This file is one of the stock files that has been modified. And this one does not look like it has been done completely, since it still pops up the notification that it is checking if the device is authorized to tether,
Yes it did work. Honestly I didn't test it without changing file permissions, because I already knew what they were and changed them before I rebooted.

I had it on my PC... It should be in General or Q&A Help forums.
Search for tether in those. Not going to be able to find it until later tonight

Yes you will, as the process requires a ROOT Explorer/Browser

What am I missing?
Hello All,
I just tried this and I am still unable to tether with AT&T. I have a Note II currently running 4.4.2. My OTA upgrade semi-bricked my phone (probably because I had a rooted 4.3 install). So I installed 4.4.2 using Zen's ODIN package. I then rerooted using CF-Autoroot and upgrade to SU 2.02 manually. According to Root checker I am rooted, I am also running 4.4.2 w/ the latest boot loader, modem, and kernel.
I first turned off ATT Hotspot as instructed. I then used Total Commander to rename the two existing files under System/app. I moved the APK in the OP into System/app and set permissions as before. I restarted my phone and tried FoxFi. It starts up and goes for a few seconds (which it did not on 4.3) It also seems to be transferring more data. However, once I try to connect my PC to the hotspot I get the "verifying" window and then the notice to call 611 to enable mobile hotspot.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Almost There!
OK I finally got my FoxFi working on my Galaxy S3 with 4.4.2!
I've also uninstalled FoxFi after I got it working and the hotpsot still works!
To turn on WiFi hotspot I go to settings/connections/More Networks/Tethering and Wi-Fi hotpsots/Mobile Hotspot and turn it on. It does say FoxFi in use even though it is uninstalled?
Not sure what is going on?
Any ideas?

I have the Note 2 also but not on 4.4.2, however I also have the verizon s5 and it had the same tethering issue at 1st untill I foundout that the tethering mod from xposed worked without issue, all I did was install xposed and the tether mod and with PowerToggles I placed the Tether toogle and enable it from there like on this Picture. I'm not 100% sure if it would work on the note 2 4.4.2 its just an idea that I think someone should try. Don't forget to make a full backup in case it goes wrong.

Error "app stopped"
HI, I have done all of the above but am not able to turn on the hotspot, once I turn it on it says "app stoped",
I am running a rooted AT&T I337 4.4.2 version phone international SIM,
any Ideas what I did wrong ?
thanks

just wanted to drop in & introduce myself...i'm the developer of the multiwindow mod for several other tablets such as the tab plus, tab 2, 7.7, and note 8 (5-layout version). I think its possible that we could get multiwindow working on the the tab 3 but i'm going to need a dedicated tester (for both the 7" and 10" version) who knows how to manually install files & set permissions (which means u guys MIGHT need TWRP or AROMA) although the packages below SHOULD be ok to flash. I'm guessing he probably has a zip template that he uses frequently and this particular mod doesn't require anyything in the data folder. I do the same thing.

Tried installing both your files for Tab3 10.1 3G.
Both failed with error code 255. Not sure if it's a problem with my permissions or root. but Tab is rooted with bindroid and root zip. (CWM)
I will try and install manually - but haven't done it before. so i'll have to read up on it first
EDIT - Nope. tried installing normally through recovery and manually - both failed. I have all the settings set to unknown sources etc.
Let me know what you would like me to try and I will help as much as I can

You may have root, but your not on a deodexed rom... so this would fail.
Also, the recovery i made is a quick solution for us to get root.
It is not made from the source-code it is suppose to be, but givvin us root for now.
Thats why it fails on some permissions while flashing zips.... I/we are working on it...
For now there can not be tested on 10.1 gtab3 devices

exactly what happenned?
did u manually place the files in the there proper locations and remember to set permissions to "rw-r--r--" (there are a total of 10 files u would have to do this on)...if u did in fact set this correctly what were the results? Did u read the post above and remember to uncheck then recheck the multiwindow option in "settings-display" (probably the problem) if so at WORSE case u should have received a flashbar force close or some sort of other sign
Thanks, THEDEVIOUS1, for taking a stab at this!
I tried the deodexed mod on Infamous. I tried copying the files to system using Root Explorer, but it went into a bootloop before all of them could be copied. I then restored a backup of Infamous and tried flashing it. There were no multi-window options to be found under any of the display options, unfortunately.

i assumme you're using the 7 inch version which means u will NOT be able to install this manually through root explorer and will need to use the file manager provided in TWRP since the zip contains major system files which need to be replaced...flashing may not work at all so if u would like real results i would attempt the method i just suggested (proof of this is the fact that u should be able to use root explorer to copy ONLY the permissions files and that should be enough t to make the menu appear which means the zip is most likely broken...i have had this problem on my setup for a while but i havent been able to track it down)

Thanks for the quick reply.
I followed your suggestion (copying fikes using twrp file manager), but there is still no sign of multi-window in any of the display settings. I may be doing something wrong. I did change permissions using twrp file manager, but I did it before copying to the system folder. Let me know if it should be dine another way.

How to prevent OTA on stock rooted VZW HTC One

Using Root explorer (or another filesystem app with write access) go to /system/app/
search "dm"
add ".bak" to the following files (filename.apk becomes filename.apk.bak). you don't need to add the .bak to the odex files. that's just extra work
DMcommandService.apk
HtcCdmaMccProvider.apk
HtcOMADM_SettingsPlugin_VZW.apk
HtcOMADM_VZW.apk
This will make it so the apps are not functional, but you didn't (re)move them, so it can easily be undone, should you chose to. Once you do this you won't see "software update" option in the system settings and it won't be able to auto-check either. you may have to reboot to see the changes.
I've been running like this for a few days with no instability. everything is working 100%. I probably disabled more apps than necessary to prevent the OTA, but I wanted to be sure and, like I said, there's no negative results so far.
If your phone has already downloaded the OTA but hasn't installed it, you can find the file in /cache/fumo and remove it. If the notification doesn't disappear on reboot, accept the update, let it fail (since you deleted the file), and the notification to install should go away
EDIT: andybones has been kind enough to upload a flashable ZIP that will remove the OTA apks as well as the firmware file, in case your phone already downloaded, but did not yet install, the update. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46380185&postcount=13

that file is made to work while retaining S-Off. it's sideloaded, so technically not an "OTA" update. OTAs have a habit of losing people's root, and generally being a nuisance. I don't have anything against updating software. just trying to help people stay one step ahead of Verizon and HTC ruining our fun.
and yeah, it DEFINITELY didn't download to downloads. lol

I misunderstood when I read that topic.
and while the current .8 to .10 may be of no consequence, we can't say for sure when the NEXT update comes out, what will happen, so this topic is just for preventative measures.

We agree on that point. Note the location I gave you for downloaded updates. Your file explorer must be in root mode or you won't see any files/folders in /cache. (There should be a couple)

Just flash this http://d-h.st/tfE and it will remove the OTA if it already was downloaded, along with the files needed to be removed.
And while I'm here it's always good to remind, as maybe someone doesn't know.
NEVER take an OTA, if you are rooted, and want to STAY rooted.
It very well could take away S-OFF.
Wait until it's confirmed or, just wait for a ROM to be made based off of it and flash the firmware and it's the exact same and you keep your S-OFF.
So, I deleted the downloaded update file and let the update process run again, and ES file explorer (actually ES download manager that was part of file explorer) was copying the update to the download folder. So, you guys were right, it was something I was doing wrong. Thanks for setting me straight!
So, I let the update download and run, then it fails out (knowing I have CWM recovery installed) and the nag goes away without updating my phone. I accidentally let it update when I was at work and didn't notice until it rebooted. I don't recommend anybody let it run and fail, but that is what happened to me.

Using Root explorer (or another filesystem app with write access) go to /system/app/
search "dm"
add ".bak" to the following files (filename.apk becomes filename.apk.bak). you don't need to add the .bak to the odex files. that's just extra work
DMcommandService.apk
HtcCdmaMccProvider.apk
HtcOMADM_SettingsPlugin_VZW.apk

I purchased a factory refurbished Verizon HTC One on eBay with the intention of flashing to PagePlus. Before I had it flashed I rooted it and renamed these files. I wanted to prevent the OTA updates because I did not want them to break the flash.
I found that I was unable to get the phone flashed because we could never get the DM Command Service window to appear. I eventually realized that my renaming these files (undoubtedly the first one) caused the problem.
I returned the files to their original names and was able to get the phone flashed.
I have renamed the last three files. I'll post here if this is effective in stopping the updates. Verizon is supposed to push out Android 4.4 shortly.

Great thread!
This is what I do when I flash New Roma as well, but to be more or less safe this is what I do.
I let the Rom fully boot up
Let phone get passed the hands free activation*a must*
With es file explorer or in recovery then change file names, for me I don't change the vdmclient one only till recently.
In recovery you just system go to system/app and change the names.

[Q] Wifi won't start on unlocked and rooted phone

He everybody. I have a T-mobile Note 2 which I brought with me to New Zealand. T-Mobile gave me an unlock code which worked and most things are fine except that wifi wont work at all. It says it is starting then turns off. I also notice it seems to be trying to turn itself on pretty constantly even though I have it turned off. I tried various wifi repair apps after rooting the phone and they all hang on deleting saved networks.
Wifi tether log shows that starting wifi (cmd) failed.
Any advice on what I can try please to get wifi going?
Since you are rooted. Are you stock rooted or did you flash a rom?
Are you on 4.3 or 4.1.2?
Is the Bootloader updated?

Easiest way: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo&hl=en
Check the screenshots.
bootloader is t889uvbmd1
How about the android version ?
You can verify it by going to Settings -> About Device -> Android version.
If your phone is on 4.1.2 then you can upgrade to 4.3.
Also, let us know if wifi stopped working right after rooting and how did you root it ?

Sorry android is 4.1.2
Wifi hasn't worked since I got the phone to New Zealand. I rooted it using saferoot in the hope it would fix wifi. It is a USA phone and I am now in NZ.
Everything else is perfect.

You can try flashing the T889UVBMD1 Kernel and see if it fixes the issue, I checked development forum and the link for this kernel is not working.
You have few options here:
a) If you want to stay on 4.1.2 you can flash Mr Robinsons root 66 rom from here
or
b) If you wish to update you can flash this 4.3 stock ROM.
In either case you wont loose any data.
To flash you will have to:
1) Download the file and then extract it. The extracted file will have a tar.md5 extension.
2) Boot your phone in-to download mode by i) turn off phone ii) hold volume down + home then press power iii) on prompt press volume up.
3) Start Odin on your pc(windows) with admin rights, (right click and run as admin).
4) Now connect your phone to PC, on ODIN if you see a message that phone is connected.(ID:COM tab on left will turn blue)
5) Click PDA tab and browse the extracted file, it will take couple of minute to verify md5 and then once it's done
6) Auto reboot and F.Reset time options are checked by default, leave them as it is and make sure no other options are selected/checked on ODIN.
7) Click Start
8) Let ODIN do it's job, phone will reboot automatically.
Done.
Thank you so much. One question do I download the rom to my phone or my PC in the instructions below?

The icon goes a pale green for a few seconds then turns itself off.
If I turn wifi on through settings the button moves to on but stays grey and then flicks itself back to off after about 5 seconds.

I am not very techy can someone suggest a safe kernel to try?
Honestly I would look it up in the thread specifically for your device. Just find a kernel matching all specifications to your device and try it out. Usually pretty easy if you follow the steps provided in the op of the kernel.

I am also simply assuming it's the kernel. Relating to similar issue I have had. It seems to be at least in my case a conflicting issue between the kernel and rom. I'm having the issue again on my HTC one. Stock kernel is fine. Using a custom kernel everything but the wifi works. Seems to always come back to a kernel to rom conflict.

I have found the plasma kernel but there are no instructions on how to replace the kernel. Is there a how to guide somewhere please?

You're not going to get much better then that ^^^. If you still are uncomfortable with a step by step maybe a walk through video. Possibly try YouTube just type it in exactly as you are asking. All kernels through Odin flash the same. As long as the video is for your phone and the file format you're good.

Very nice work!!!
However, I can't seem to get the wifi hotspot to work I am rooted (via towelroot and verified). I enable it via your app, go to setting and wifi hotspot. Then a dialog pops up asking me to subscribe? I have S5 with Sprint running stock 4.4.2.
Thoughts?

Hi,
First reboot phone once and see if subscription nag pops up again, if so see below:
Do me a favor (I would appreciate it) Click restore via HFA, let the phone reboot and finish HFA(you won't lose any data promise)
With a file explorer navigate to data/data/com.android.porviders.telephony/databases/telephony.db
pm me this file or post it here (no unique data in it so no worries)
I will get you all sorted out.
Thanks

Sorry to have wasted your time with a reply. It seems that a reboot did fix the issue as I was able to start the Hotspot now and the nag dialog doesn't appear.

Yes the phone keeps the old apn settings in memory untill another one is loaded(switch from 3g to lte or a manual switch or, of course, a reboot)

It absolutely did with TDunham's DeOdexed version.
Obtained root using tdunham [STOCK ROM][4.4.4] NK4 Kitkat ROM DeOdexed. Followed all the instructions on that thread. Im using TWRP recovery.
Downloaded Galaxy Tools from the play store. Says Galaxy Tools v2.2.0. su: Using: 2.13:SUPERSU
I click on "Enable Native Hotspot" and the phone restarts. I go back into the GT app and click on Wifi Hotspot settings and turn the hotspot on. Everytime I do this I get a pop up that says I am not subscribed.
I have uninstalled the GT app and reinstalled. Cleared all data for SU app. No matter what I do I always get the pop up saying I am not subscribed.
Any suggestion?

Maybe try uninstall su app, enable hotspot, then reinstall su app again after hotspot is working.

After disabling SU (cant uninstall, there is no option to. Guessing since it is built into the ROM) I go into the GT app and click Enable hotspot and it says IOException.

Not sure, sorry, I made this for all stock galaxy devices, and it works on all of their official software versions(at least S3 through Note 4/Edge). I cannot say how it will work on custom roms because people change whatever they want in them. On stock everything would work as it should.

It turns out that GalaxyTools is not working for me either. Since I had root, I had to ODIN the NK2 tar file to my phone and not take OTA. I then factory reset the phone for a clean start. I did notice that the APN is greyed out when I try access it using ##DATA# command with MSL to edit. Maybe something is not letting GalaxyTools edit the APN setting.
Finally decided to do it using SQLite editor and rebooted. Native hotspot is now working.
I am sure GalaxyTools will soon get updated to accommodate this limitation.
In the meantime, just use SQLite.

Yes just uncheck auto reboot in GalaxyTools and it will be ok, next update I'll make it check after it writes the change before I have it reboot It seems for some the root request is just not passed or granted fast enough, I will make sure in next version this cannot happen.
