Audio quality while recording video? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just checking in on how audio quality is while recording video? (thinking about getting this device).
Does it get that 'underwater' effect that sometimes plagues audio in video?
Is it able to record loud noise without distorting?

Good question considering I like recording concerts I go to.. I haven't been to one yet, but would like to see someone's recording of one. I know the LG G2 was horrible at recording concerts as well as the whole line of Galaxy phones.. Sadly the best phone I've ever heard for recording loud volumes is the iphone

This is an advertised feature of the G3 and I was also wondering about it.
Coming from an S3 where you couldnt make out anything except garbled noise when recording in loud environments, I was also keen to see if this would really work.
So, just the other night I was in the pub, bunch of people, some DJ playing some cheesy tunes with decent amount of bass and lots of noise of people etc etc.. Now I don't want to upload the video because my workmates would kill me, you know the drunken antics people get into, but I will say the following about the video recording in this noisy environment:
1. You could hear everything!
2. It sounds a bit like music in a tin, but even above the music / screams and noise you could still clearly hear people speaking and what they were saying perfectly.
3. Played it back on the PC and it definitely still has bass / treble / mid range, maybe a bit too much mid range but I think that's the compromise between being able to still record voices while all this noise is happening.
4. All in all great, I am pleased.
5. Need to record at a festival though with super loud sound so that I can compare the sound to my friends Nokia & iPhone video recordings to rate it a bit better. (if you have links to videos recorded by such devices that I can compare to, I will have a look and see what I notice different / better /worse)
I am no audiophile / sound engineer, but these are my impressions of video recording in a loud environment.

TLDR- PERFECT PHONE!

Taken on an LG G3. Took it on Thursday Night. If I took video on my Galaxy S3 in the same spot, you wouldnt be able to hear anything because the bass would take over...
Here is my Galaxy S3 taking video at EDC Orlando in November 2013... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSwQ7WIrJVM too much bass...

Dang it really does take good audio in videos. Great vids!

I can confirm this phone has good audio recording at loud concerts which I go to quite often. It's not the best quality but at least it doesn't distort or get overpowered by bass (like my note 2). I am very satisfied. I can finally record artists and enjoy rewatching the clips on my phone.

I have also discovered the same problem. I have searched a bit and its turn out to be "noise cancellation" feature build in kit kat, the problem is presented in nexus 5 too, and google working on it to fix this in 4.4.3, otherwise in very loud environments like concerts noise cancellation do amazing job, but it is very bad for quite environment.

This is what bugs me most about my G3. The noise cancellation that kicks in after 3 or 4 seconds is just way too aggressive for the sake of reducing distortion in harsh environments. It practically ruins the sound quality unless you have someone speaking nearby. Every video I have taken sounds muffled and garbled.
This is definitely one area in which I prefer my old One M7 with the "HDR" dual membrane microphones which would simultaneously be clear and avoid distortion. LG should have taken this route if they were serious about avoiding distortion.

Today's LG G3 Update fix that bug, good job Google and LG :good:

I found this thread while searching for a solution to very audio problem mentioned here.
I also have an LG G3 and have recently returned from a week holiday only to find that the 140 clips i took all have this audio problem.
Nauvho, you mentioned that LG/Google has fixed this in an update. I received the V10g update recently. However, it still has this problem.
Is this the same update that fixed it for you?
Cheers!

Hi there, yes this update fix the problem for me, however i can't confirm that this update is targeted for this bug at all, but it is confirmed that it is android bug.

Thanks for replying!
How strange that it fixed it for you and not me.
Did you get the V10g or the V10e update?

That's the same one that i got.
I wonder why it didn't fix it for me. Very annoying.
You say it's an Android thing but why is it not present on other Android 4.4.2 devices?

Gnex in loud environment

I am very disappointed that I have no solution for recording good audio in video in a loud environment with the Gnex except for good headphones. Is there no kenrel/ rom/ app that allows us to lower the mic gain while recording? I know the Nexus 4 has the same problem but it seems fixed using FauxSound from Playstore.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...kang.fauxsound
In S3 I know they removed the lower frequencies and you get OK video record even in loud environment but it is still bad.
I really miss Voodoo sound

ahh yes that's true, there may be stuff out there that won't work on 4.3. Only thing i can say about that is to contact the dev and wait for an update to the app. i know that's not what you wanted to hear, sorry. other than that though how do you like it? i got mine a few days ago and its been fantastic, best android device i've ever owned

But... i think stereo speaker isn't louder than I expected.
It seems to have similar volume level with another devices..
And headphone jack is too quiet for me.
It is pretty much quieter than my ex-device Samsung Galaxy S2.
Is that only problem of mine?
thats a good question, havent even tried the headphone jack yet, guess i will now

Some Korean apps... and sound mods like viper4android.
And i think 4.3's audio output is quieter than 4.2.
My N7 is sooo quiet, both headphones and speakers.

Newer devices have advances that play well with the newer OS systems that are available so in my view retro versions may not work as well with some of the more advanced designs in the device thingy.
That said I feel the volume is plenty loud and in fact sounds really good. This is without a doubt the best 7" tablet available at this time. The Nexus 10 is the best 10" tablet available at this time, yes better than the apple products. The audio is better and the screens are better and you can set it up as you please a more mature attitude from the manufacturer if you will. Less hand holding, less paternalistic access to your device.
I bought mine at Office Max with the 20% discount, I felt that the price was almost unbelievable and was surprised when they had some left in stock.
I would like more memory 64GB would be nice but I rooted it and use stick mount to run videos and move files.

Hi:
You might want to try these JBL Bluetooth speakers--they are loud:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009AYLDSU/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
As for Korean apps, you might try backing up the apk files and installing them. I know that Google says many of my Chinese apps are incompatible but they all work. Worth a try.
Let us know if you find a work around with bluetooth headphones, apps or anything else that works. It's going to be a rocky road with Bluetooth and 4.3. Many Bluetooth keyboards and some headphones don't work with 4.3. I'm reluctant to order anything Bluetooth without confirmation from others that it works with 4.3
I ordered some LG Bluetooth headphones in June. They worked with the Nexus 7 2012 but only played 1/4 volume on my Galaxy S3 so I returned them.
Keep us posted.
Tom
My sound on the headphones is good/decent. At about 1/2 volume is comfortable to me.
I'm not much of an audiophile so I don't know how impedance effects the volume. It's not extremely loud at max volume, though. I'd probably still be able to hear my music while on the lawn mower or on my motorbike but not sure about a jet plane ^^
Speakers at max volume is fine for a quiet room, but outside it probably won't be very loud.
Hope this helped some.

Just confirming that my bluetooth keyboard (made by Anker for ~$25 on Amazon) works.
I just paired it and this is the first thing I've typed. Seems to do well. I can even alt-tab to other stuff running. Sweet.
Also just connected my bluetooth apple mightymouse (or whatever they're called) and that's working as well (at the same time as the keyboard)

Thank you for your valueable opinion.
To me, I'm very satisfied with another features and there was no intend to diminish Google or Nexus.
And I'm very proud of having brand-new nexus which have the sharpest screen among the world.
What I want to say is Nexus 7's audio quality is quite good but volume is low, lower than how I expected.
Within my experience, commonly, tablets usually make more powerful sound than phone but my Nexus 7 doesn't.
It seems to have simmilar power with phones. I just feel sad about that.

Thank you for attention.
Bluetooth is great and easy protocol for sharing small files or connect simple devices, but it is not so good for audio.
Nexus 7 doesn't support apt-x, so bluetooth will impair Nexus 7's quite good quality sound.
At this time I have no bluetooth device so I cannnot find which one works, which one doesn't.
Sorry for bad answer.

Maybe mine seems simmilar with yours, so I can think my device isn't corruped or something.
In fact I doubted my Nexus is a normal or not.
Thanks, thanks again.
Speakers are really loud. Comparable to my sons Samsung Tab and much much louder then the first gen.
As for apps, just because some apps haven't been given the green flag for 4.3 doesn't mean I won't work. I've sideloaded tons of apps that work fine.
Nothing really different between 4.3 and 4.2 cosmetically. You shouldnt want to downgrade just because a few devs haven't updated yet.

You would have to find a ROM that boost the volume. Just going to 4.2.2 wont increase your volume. I've been playing around with some stuff to boost volume and hopefully will have a mod out soon for it
But player is right...the diff between 4.2 and 4.3 are min. They did make a lot of battery saving tweaks, BT stack tweaks and other hardware tweaks but its more hardware related then os related

[Q] Sound volume of HTC One M9

Hi everybody, i will soon buy HTC One M9 so i am interested in one thing:
How loud speakers are on the M9?
Because loudness is very important to me because me and my team like to listen alot of music while out.
Are they louder than my friends Galaxy S3? i know they are more quality but i want them to be alot of louder than Galaxy s3 becasue he always tells he has loudest speaker of all of us, so i want to blow him away

If your phone is rooted
Go to play store and search for viper4android. In the playstore the app will have a ton of Chinese in it. But when you download it, it is in English. This will make your phone a whole lot louder and it will sound cleaner!
Sent from my HTC One M9 using XDA Free mobile app
I find the quality and loudness of the M9 speaker is far superior to ANY of the Galaxy S series. My mate has the s6 and i had the s4 and my sister has the s5, and it's much better. Louder, better sound quality. It's great, and having it at high volumes doesnt make you feel like the speaker is going to rattle itself to death either.
What about ringtones? they do not seem as loud as all the other phones owned by my co-workers. We always have to listen for our phones since we are on call and when their phones ring they seem much louder than my M9.
I'm gonna be the "odd man out" here.
I've had the M7, M8 and now the M9.... I think the M9 has the best sound, but the quietest of the 3. My step son's iPhone 5s is louder, but sounds really bad.
To me, everything needs to come up a few db.... But then I think you'd lose the sound quality.
Just my $.02 wroth.

I am a new fan of this app... If you are rooted this can bring you quite a few db and you can improve sound quality in the advanced features.. I've never had a cell phone that could sound better than my mp3 player until I learned of this app. The developer should charge for it. IMO it's that good. Let me know what you think and don't worry it is in English.

Edit-- The best improvements are in headphones and bluetooth. But does bring up the ext speakers quite a bit.

I have a hard time hearing ringtones too.. Honestly I go to zedge and find the most loud ringtones I can find and that helps. If it's something like being on call I'd look for a loud alarm tone and set that ringtone for my work number. I did that at a baseball game and I could hear it... barely but I heard it as where the stock tones I couldn't hear anything.

On a side note, but still related: I have V4A installed on my current ROM, but it doesn't work for some reason? I've used it on previous phones and know how to get it working, but for some reason it's just not working with my current ROM (Eragon 8.6). I've updated and tried all 3 "driver" installations... I reboot it and check the driver status and it shows it's not working and I hear no difference with any changes I make.
You can use on PC a free program call Audacity to boost the loudness of ringtones. Just load it, use the boost/amplify feature (I forget what it is called), and then export as a new file. You will have to download an additional file called lamemp3 and direct the program to it in order to save as a mp3. This works really well. You can also load a full song and trim out the portion of the song you want as a ringtone.

Video sound in loud concerts

Hey guys yesterday went to a Metallica concert and recorded some songs, but even though the voice is pretty clear, the rest of the sound is distorted and pretty much mediocre.
Any idea if this is a software/hardware fault?
I've read some stuff in distorted sounds in xiaomi phones and I noticed there were some fixes for this, but since this phone is kinda new I found nothing about this problem.
Anyone had the same experience? Cheers.
sorry but recording a metallica concert with any smartphone makes no sense for me at all
better enjoy the concert while you are there

Is his life dude
Same here - and it's not just at Metallica concerts... I'm in a band and used my Mi 4c for recordings of rehearsals. Recordings quality was really, really good! Now last week I used my new Mi 9 SE and was devestated. Everything is way distorted beyond recognition of songs. It's awful. I'd expected at least the same quality on the newer, "better" and more expensive phone
But I've just flashed a xiaomi.eu rom today. Will try recording again at the next rehearsal and will let you know if that changed anything. If anyone has any idea how to improve recording quality, please let us know

I have the same problem. I read somewhere, that its not happening when recording with 0.7x or 4.0x camera but only with 1.0x camera. Haven't tried it with other cameras yet.
