[Q] Samba shared folder to AFTV XBMC - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently tried to mount a samba shared folder from my router to my AFTV, I can mount it and start playing videos, but only for a few minutes then freeze with seeking displayed. Anyone familiar with this issue or should I start looking at the router even though I don't have any issues with a PC playing those videos.
Thanks in advance!

I have several SMB shares setup and they are working just fine. My shares are on a separate PC though, not on/directly attached to the router. Have you tried setting up a share on another PC to try to isolate the issue?

[Q] SAMBA or other network sharing for XBMC on Fire TV?

Has anyone been able to get SMB or some other kind of network sharing going on XBMC? I installed it and it's running fine but I can't browse any network shares. I have not tried to set it up as a UPNP server but I was wondering if anyone has anything working yet.
I've been reading through the forums and so far I have side loaded XBMC for Ouya 12.3.2 and HBOGo. Ouya runs great but I have not tried any videos and HBOGo worked fine but I didn't think the video quality was great.
Thanks in advance for the help.
do you mean the SMB client in xbmc? I've never had a problem with it on firetv.
or did you mean you want to run a file server on firetv?
you can turn on "remote manager" in es file explorer. which is in fact just a basic ftp server.
or you could try something like
http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/?id=com.icecoldapps.sambaserver
http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/?id=com.funkyfresh.samba
etc. ...

The SMB client in XBMC....for some reason when I tried to browse it it was not seeing my network. Did it work right out of the box with yours? I'm running Windows 7 on the host machine
*****EDIT**** had to restart windows machine....it's working now. Thanks everyone!

XBMC crashes when scanning / scaping movie folder

XBMC always crashes when trying to scan movie folders. This happened to Gatham 13.1, 13.2 as well as SPMC. I have seen other people reporting the same issue and it seems there are some common conditions when this happens:
1. Connection over wifi,
2. access through SMB,
3. using movie scraper (no issue if using series scraper)
4. to folder with secondary sub-folder.
The issue is gone if secondary sub-folder is removed, or change the file accessing protocol from SMB to SSH.

My issue was with this:
1.- Ethernet cable connection
2.- Access through SMB
3.- Movie screper (no issue if using series scraper)
I was on spmc and kodi. I uncheck and delete subfolders and the special characters and diacritics from filenames [/รก...
Now it works.
After switching from SMB to NFS to access file on my Synology NAS, xbmc wont crash any more when scraping movies.
Therefore, this must have something to do with Synology's SMB, or related settings.
My system doesn't seem to crash, but it takes a lifetime to gather a movies information via a SMB share.
Is there anyway to speed this up ?

Depends on your setup. SMB works fine for my with wired connection and 3 different drives with videos.
From my understanding NFS is faster. I just haven't found a good free nfs server for Windows though. I tried haneWIN, and it worked great performance on my Rpi was better, just didn't want to put anymore money into my setup.
If someone knows a good free nfs server for windows please do share.

[Q] FTV : XBMC / SPMC :: Video playback stops in seconds (Workaround available)

Friends,
I just got a new AFTV and trying to run XBMC but playback is just not working. I have a Gigabit wired connection and most MKVs start playing quickly with sound, but then stop in few seconds. Some run for 25 seconds and others (usually the larger MKVs) freeze and then quit under 10 seconds. Tried disabling hardware acceleration completely as well as with/without below network settings but nothing worked -
<buffermode>1</buffermode>
<readbufferfactor>10</readbufferfactor>
<cachemembuffersize>52428800</cachemembuffersize>
Did a factory reset of FTV and ran XBMC with default settings and just 1 video file but didn't help. The same files (shared in Drobo) work great on my HTPC (XBMC). Tried Kodi Alpha and SPMC with video acceleration changes as well but no go.
Here is the log with mediacodec off and then on. All other apps work very well and it's otherwise smooth so want to keep it but I got it primarily for XBMC.
Thanks for any suggestions / pointers.
10/28/2014 Update: See the last post for workaround.
Am I missing something obvious? With so many people successfully running XBMC on FTV there must be something odd in my environment.
Only thing I can think of is maybe a network issue playing off your drobo that the aftv doesn't like. Do files play properly from a local folder copied onto the aftv?
Other than that, there is a known issue with one particular firmware and xbmv, but I don't think that's the case here, Check aftvnews.com for a post about it.
Last suggestion would be to check http://kodi.wiki/view/Amazon_Fire_TV and follow everything there. It was fairly trivial to get it working, so it's odd it's not working for you.
Good luck.

Thanks eskay. I too thought it might be Drobo or network related due to the below error in the log -
ERROR: virtual unsigned int XFILE::CSmbFile::Read(void*, int64_t) - Error( -1, 110, Connection timed out )
Installing nfs 1.2.8 as we speak. If that doesn't work will try USB drive and report.
I think I found the problem. Couldn't get NFS to work on Drobo yet but XBMC on FTV works perfectly when I share a directory from my HTPC. So, it's clear that Drobo is the culprit. The HTPC share uses SMB too (Windows 8.1) so it's not specifically to SMB, maybe Drobo's implementation of SMB ...
Couldn't get NFS to work with XBMC on FTV Sad Installed NFS on Drobo 5N and my HTPC can see the directories shared from XBMC (Windows) but not XBMC on FTV. It can see the shared directory (/mnt/DroboFS/Shares/Public) not the files/folders under it. Possobly a bug in NFS code in XBMC for Android and that makes me wonder whether it's really Drobo, or XBMC for Android on FTV ...
An update in case anyone else encounters the same problem with this combination of FTV / Drobo 5N/ Netgear Nighthawk. I couldn't resolve SMB issue and nfs didn't work with XBMC on FTV properly either. I tried SFTP but it was too slow and was buffering too frequently.
I then installed lighttpd with simple directory listing on Drobo and set up XBMC to use HTTP Directory and it worked perfectly. Playback is smooth and I can skip to next chapter without any noticeable delay. Only issue is that I can't delete the files on Drobo. I am going to try WebDAV next but it's not a big issue as I can always remove the watched files from my HTPC, which connects using SMB.
I can watch 3D BluRay ISOs with just acceleration set to "software" and that shows FTV's processing power! Overall I am very happy with XBMC on FTV.

No root. No HDD usage. Alternative?

So, I cant root the fire tv obviously and I bought it so someone i know can use it offline to watch offline movies instead of dvds. No way around this problem? I sideloaded KodiTV but its no use since I cant even use a flash or HDD
Can you sideload ES Explorer and connect to an SMB share on a NAS or Windows/Linux Server? it sounded like some people are doing that.

Is there a PC with spare hard drive space on the same network?
Kodi/SPMC/XBMC has the ability to make an SMB connection to a windows file share and play files from it. I do this with my Fire TV (box) and Fire TV stick to connect to my Win2012 server with many hard drives in it (holding all my movies converted from my blurays).
If a "Browse Master" isn't available on the network you wont be able to "browse" to find the computer and shared folder, and will instead have to manually use IP address and folder info for the "server" machine into Kodi/SPMC/XBMC when trying to setup the SMB connection. Extra info see -> http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=133624
Offline usage.
I have this Dane-Elec Media Streamer for hooking USB and SD cards that lets me connect to it through the FireTV's internet menu.
If you can sideload a matching app for one of these streamer doohickies, you should be able to connect straight to one.
There is one downside where it can stupidly auto-connect to a different remembered internet connection when you are using the streamer's connection.
I wonder if there is an offline cloud box for accessing files via "offline internet" or maybe even bluetooth?
She doesnt have a computer. I'm thinking I gotta keep this for myself since I got a few hard drives on my computer
There are quite a few Video Add-ons for XBMC/Kodi that make local storage a thing of the past. Between those and IPTV configs, you may not even notice. Although, most USA ISPs don't like streaming only households. Overages, etc may hurt the pocketbook...

Mount NAS (Drobo 5N) as Source in Kodi

I have a Drobo 5N as a NAS with all of my media on it. For the life of me, I can't get Kodi to mount it as a source. I am able to see the Drobo in the list of servers but I can't get past that point. I have disabled any security on the folder share and I have also tried to manually add the SMB share with the IP address of the device but haven't had any luck. There are other protocols that can be used but I'm not sure if it should be that difficult, nor do I know how to use the other protocols. I am able to see and access my PC shares just fine. Does anybody have any ideas?
I am a newbie to Kodi and I am beyond excited to get this working. I have been using a WDTV Live Streaming Media Player for many years and this is going to take my movie experience to a whole new level if I can get it working. Any help is appreciated!
Anyone? I'm dying to get this thing working. I've had a small taste of what Kodi can do by connecting it to my PC but I need to connect it to my NAS. I'm so close but so far!
Sent from my SM-G900P using XDA Free mobile app
Simply use the following connection:
smb://droboIP/share_name
Mine was smb://192.168.1.100/movies

I keep getting "Error - Connection timed out" even though I have a hardwired Ethernet connection! Can you help?
I don't have a Drobo 5N. I have a Synology unit. SMB was way too problematic. I use NFS instead and it works much nicer. I don't know how easy/difficult it will be to set up on your NAS.
