[SPECS] Asus ZenWatch Specifications - Members Thoughts - Asus ZenWatch

Hey all
Asus has thrown their hand to the Smartwatch market. This Android Wear device features a curved display similar to that of the Gear S, the specs are not far off either. Its a nice looking watch with a leather strap that is certainly an improvement over some of the plastic straps we've see on some smartwatches. Members thoughts on the specifications are appreciated:good:
Lets take a look at the specifications for the Asus ZenWatch

Specs are no different from other watches that were announced which is a little bummer. But I like the look and strap. I'm hoping better battery at least via mods but we don't usually see so many developers jumping on ASUS products and that's a deal breaker for me

why on earth is there a snapdragon 400? how much power do you need on your wrist for notifications, a snapdragon 200 would have bben better for battery life and price no?

The size of the other round watches and gear live have put me off as u have small wrists. This one, although big might be better. Agree though, not sure why snapdragon 400. Bet it's under clocked! I'm always weary of Asus screens too having suffered with TF201

What's wrong with curved glass?

Is it sure that there is no light sensor? It should be regulated manually?

Only watch with light sensor is the moto 360 and it gives it its flat tire look.. All others don't have a sensor

Then how do you explain this? It's for a different feature, but I actually prefer the muting option.. I don't mind using other means to turn the watch face off or letting it auto-off.

That's interesting. Light sensor isn't listed on any specs but I might have missed it. It use multi touch to detect...

Proximity or touchscreen. Same in LG Watch, you can turn off the screen when cover it by your hand.

I like this smartwatch better than others, it has nice leather strap, sleek design, curved screen. Only thing that concerns most about these smartwatches is the battery backup , how about these manufacturers implement additional battery in the strap, or some technology which will empower watches using body heat, wrist movement, sunlight etc.

My concern is that is not edge to edge. There is black borders around the display. Will only black watch faces look good then? What do you think?

Personally, I'm considering this over the Moto 360 due to a better fit with Android Wear / Google Now cards and other info. Half of my watches are square anyway so roundness holds no inherent superiority for me.
From a specs perspective though, the review on pocket-lint has this to say:
Unnoticeable to a passing glance, the base of the black frame surrounding the screen allows you to check your heart rate by simply loading the app and then placing your finger on the watch. Seconds later (15 to be precise) the watch delivers your stats for you to see how you're doing.
The nearest experience we can relate it to, is Apple's TouchID Home button on the iPhone 5S. The bio sensor works really well in the ZenWatch.
This is maybe worse than other Android Wear solutions that have the HR sensor on the back bezel against your wrist. But I've heard you basically have to stop and stand still for it to work anyway.
Also IP55 is a bummer...dust tight (not proof) and water resistant to splashing, not sprays, and def not immersion. Moto is what, IP67?
Battery is 369 mah which puts it in the middle of various watches. Screen is AMOLED so that should be helpful if you like dark faces (which I do).
As far as I can tell, there's no always on mode, unless that's part of Android Wear?

Very wrong, I have a galaxy gear 2, gear live, and a gear S.... All of which have ambambient light sensors and tThe gear S even had a UV sensor on top of that to determine if the UV rays at any given time could be dangerous. Anyone that thinks different try to explain the auto brightness adjustment of the display. And you don't believe the UV sensor just say it and I'll post some pics of it in action. I got my Asus zenwatch on order and will be arriving on the 18th but ican't imagine it wouldn't have alight sensor.

Yes there is an always on option in android wear and even a never dim option while charging in the un-lockable developer options. The Qualcomm TOQ had abattery in the band's clap on the under side and it was horrible, I only kept that watch for a week, not being able to change the band's on the bulkiest watch there is was adeal breaker, still was cool for being one of the first ones out though and the charging set up for that was the best I've seen to date, wireless charging with a sleek little case that holds blue tooth headsets and when you push a button the charging pad slowly would raise to a avertical position to accommodate for setting the watch up against it. Very well thought out.... And no screen yet can compare being that they look better in direct sun light than they do in the dark, wish there was a happy medium there.

True, sorry I do always forget about all the Samsung range as they aren't all android wear but I take your point.
The way the screen cover to silent function works on my LG G watch R I believe is through multitouch with the palm of your hand rather than any sensors as there aren't any on the watch. Maybe the Asus does the same

App support?
Does anyone knows if Asus has an Android app to compliment the watch (Like the Moto360)? I just returned my Moto to Costco (Yes they have crap load in stock) because I saw the Zen online......
The Moto actually is alright as the battery last all day (after you do a couple of cycle thru when first charged). The Zen watch to be looks more elegant and has some nifty features.

They do and I believe it is called "ASUS ZenWatch Manager", you should be able to find it in the play store.

No WiFi, no GPS, and only IP55 (i.e. unusable for snorkeling) makes this one a loser in my opinion. Plus, heart rate monitor, aside from being a mere gimmick, will most likely be buggy, hence unusable.

Anyone Coming from Moto 360/LG Watch R to Asus ZenWatch

hi, wanted to know if Anyone Coming from Moto 360/LG Watch R to Asus ZenWatch !!
I am currently using Moto 360 and purchsed Asus ZenWatch, will decide later if I want to keep both or sell one..
How do you like the zenwatch compared to Moto 360? I borrowed my friend's moto 360 to check it out for a week. It's pretty useful.

Mine in transit, will be getting in 1week!!
i have a silver 360 and yesterday the zen watch for my wife was delivered. random first reactions:
-zen watch screen smaller than the moto - hello bezel
-ambient mode on the ZW is brighter than the moto and stays on all the time unless its charging.
-quick release deployant is nicer than regular clasp.
-ZW charger is soft touch material and snaps onto the watch. usb port is on the side so the cable end points up while charging. would be more elegant if used with a 90-degree adapter. moto charges easier.
-charged the ZW full at 9:30 last night. wife played with it until about midnight. then it sat around until 6:30 this morning when i plugged it in to top it off for the day. ZW still had about 75% battery. So ZW battery probably lasts 2+ days with ambient on
-asus included some extra software for like remote camera, wellness center and some other stuff. the asus remote camera app works on the moto
-ZW vibrates to let you know it lost connection with the phone....i use Pear to do the same on the moto
-ZW lets you cover the watch to mute phone calls...i swipe to ignore on the moto
-ZW $50 less than moto
-ZW has a SOS thing where it sends a preset message to any specified number along with location info
-ZW has no light sensor, so manual brightness settings only.
-the asus commercial showed a sweeping second hand on the stock face...its now a ticking second hand and i see no options to change it...

i like my silver 360 with the custom band, my wife likes her zen watch with the stock band. she actually has the black 360 for the past week but decided immediately, based on looks before even turning on the zen watch, to return the black one to costco.

all commercial I have seen also show sweeping seconds hand - did you checked with Asus on this???
even the Reviews quoted the same - "The ZenWatch comes with tons of clock faces, which display when the watch is in ‘hibernation’ mode. We particularly liked the analogue face, with a second hand that moves seamlessly around."
As a watch nut, I like the Moto360 in theory. But after discovered the Zenwatch on this forum, I couldn't flip it faster.
Tonneau shape just has that look appeals to me (Zenwatch), having said that, I think the Moto360 usable surface is greater.
Both works fine as far as the Google Now. I think Zenwatch edged out with the companion app features.
Still too soon to tell as I just got the Zenwatch handed by UPS this afternoon. I see definitely more fashion possibilities on the Zen though.

Yea I don't see "tons of watch faces" OR a sweeping second hand on mine. If anyone can shed some light on this, I'm sure many people, myself included, would be grateful!
360 for a week, samsung s for two, sony sw3 for one, get asus today
Weii--I returned the the 360 and the SW3. I have and will keep the samsung s. I am testing out the ZW, should get it delivered later today if there is not another snow delay. I think I returned the 360 and SW3 mostly due to limits in android wear. But I wanted to try the ZW---its companion apps, and its looks, might compensate some. I also read somewhere that some person thought the google now voice commands worked better in ZW than 360 (a mic/speaker difference). I really like the samsung s sand am definitely keeping it---but it cannot make appointments and reminders---everything else on it I find to be much more useable than SW3 and 360. Glad to share any other impressions.
I just got my ZenWatch 2 days ago and I'm returning it. The notification vibration is far too weak. I barely feel it. And the battery life is mediocre, at best. With 'always on' checked and brightness at minimum, it dropped 50% in only 3-4 hrs. And I wasn't 'playing' with the watch at all. Just sitting there waiting for notifications that I couldn't feel vibrating...

I agree with everything you're saying, however I would give the battery a little while longer to settle in. My moto 360 took about a week to settle in, that update also helped considerably. As of right now I'm getting the same battery life as you though, which so far is pretty damn disappointing! Really hoping it starts settling in soon, otherwise this is going back and I'm getting the 360 again, this time with metal band.
UPDATE: Actually, after thinking it over a bit more clearly, I'm only really disappointed in the initial drain down to 50% being so quick. Even still, mine lasts a good 16 hours or so, so far. Which is pretty damn good and I think can only get better. Please excuse my initial response, I work second shift and just woke up. Brain was still a bit foggy lol [emoji1]... I probably won't be returning for the moto 360, after actually tallying up the hours I've been getting so far with this watch vs what the moto was when I had it.
The only reason I hadn't already bought a 360 was because the ZenWatch was announced just a day or 2 before I planned to order the 360. So I was very much looking forward to getting this. I was totally biased when I first put it on my wrist.
I can live with the battery. I have a SmartQ Zwatch that I've had for a year that lasts about 36 hrs on a charge. I'm fine with a battery that only lasts a day. I don't wear my watch at night when I'm home anyway. I can charge each night. But I just can't get past the weak vibration. If I'm doing anything more physical than just sitting calmly, I simply don't feel it vibrating. This Zwatch I have can be heard vibrating from across a quiet room, it's so strong

Yea I hear ya... It is pretty weak, but I actually kinda like that it's not too intrusive. I don't like it when they are too strong and I'm getting notification after notification... And personally, I haven't missed a notification yet. But everyone is different.

I decided to keep my ZenWatch after all. I'm hoping a software update could fix the things I don't like. The main reasons I decided to keep it, and not trade it in for a 360 are the ZenWatch's Snapdragon 400 chip vs 360's OMAP chip. Just based on that, the 360 was outdated on the day it was released. And I prefer the look of the ZenWatch. Plus the ability put on any standard watch band without the need to snap on plastic accessories is a big plus. I got 2 new watch bands yesterday for the ZenWatch that totally change the look in just a couple minutes. A brushed stainless steel band with an interesting link pattern and a black leather band with white stitching and a brushed stainless steel buckle. Both look really sharp and match the watch style perfectly.

Here's the stainless steel band
I finally got my Asus ZenWatch and I am sending back my Moto 360.
Benefits or PROS of Zenwatch over Moto 360:
Latest processor and there is NO lag what so ever as compared to Moto 360
Better VOICE Recognition
Coz of square screen - more apps working
Better Battery Life, one full day easily with heavy use with screen ON, moderate 1.5 days, less usage can give you 2 days
Comparatively Thinner profile than Moto 360
Cheaper than Moto 360
CONS:
Charging is bit of a pain if you are coming from Moto 360
If you own a MotoX2 phone, is there any reason to "lean" towards the 360 rather than the Zenwatch (do the two together do anything you couldn't do otherwise)?

The best snartwach to use with a suit?

I've been thinking about buying the Moto 360 for a while because it's, imo the best looking snartwach to use with a suit (I work at a bank) since first reviews were not very good. With all the updates it had and after all this time what are the main functionalities that we can do with it at the moment and the main grips you're still having? Should I wait for another snartwach to arrive?
Cheers

Well my suggestion is to go with the Moto360 with the stainless steel band or if you could get your hands on the uniband. My 360 doesn't get noticed as easily as a smartwatch because of the round face which is good but the LG G Watch R does the same thing but that wouldn't blend well with suits since it has a sports watch type of face.
In terms of battery life it was horrendous before updates but afterwards it can easily last 24 hours with tilt to wake on. I'm assuming without tilt to wake you can go for 36 hours or more.
The ambient screen feature drops it down to about 10 or so hours so if you think that's its worth having your screen on all the time but dark to a point where its very hard to tell time in most situations then go ahead and activate it.
The one thing that I'm the most affraid of when using the 360 is the possibilities of the back cracking. One search in the forums will show you pictures of people cracking their watches from normal use. Most of the time it is due to custom watch bands but not uncommon for it to happen on the leather model. Thankfully I haven't heard much about the oem steelband equipped watch cracking.
If the moto360 is not your style then you can always go to the zenwatch but the con is that it's square (not watch looking) and the fame color can throw off any custom band you may put on it. Only problem I have with that is its You can wait until the LG releases its premimum watch and decide from there or if you want wait until September or so when the updated version of the moto360 releases
Thanks for your input, I really like the design of the 360 but battery life is not good and the ambient Mode destroys it, from what I've been reading. What about the LG Urbane?

I personally can get 2 days out of mine. I have the steel bracelet in silver, it looks really classy and works with everything (as it is both minimalistic and sportslike.
Go with the right watchface and you're done.
http://wearfaces.com/simplism-watchface-by-vanboosh/
Or : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pskstudio.elegancewatchfacefree
But you have ambient Mode always on, meaning, you have it always showing the time?
The moto 360 doesn't have an always on time mode like some of the other android wear watches like the lg g watch. Coming from am lg g watch I was really disappointed in that. The screen is also more pixellated than I expected. And the black bar on the screen makes me only use black watchfaces otherwise the black bar ruins the look. However, all those faults are forgiven if you love the style. I have two generation of pebbles and the lg g watch and the moto 360 may be the least practical of them all, but I really love the way it looks. Even though it's a bit chunky on my wrist. I considered waiting for the huwai watch but in the end decided the moto 360 looks better. If you really like the look of one style vs the other, you won't mind the drawbacks. Keep in mind you will very likely upgrade as new generations are released. The next generation will probably be leaps and bounds better.

Yeah, I do prefer the look of the 360 but the LG watch Urbane looks nice as well and because of the amoled screen lasts a full day, from what I've been reading. It's also sharper and has a full round screen. Have you seen it?
Not in person, but I've seen pictures of it. The amoled screen would be a plus (except maybe outside), and not having the black bar is good too. It's not on my radar because it looks too manly, I just don't like the way it looks (I'm a woman). The moto 360 with the thin metal strap is less weird on a woman's wrist; it looks a bit like a boyfriend watch. But if you like the lg urbane and can afford to upgrade in 6 months, get that now and then get the next gen moto 360 in the fall too! It will almost certainly have better battery life in the next gen and maybe amoled screen too.
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
Yes, your right, it does look manly. The 360 looks a mix between something classic and something futuristic and I love it. If you have it, how do you feel about having a watch that is a black screen most of the day? I also have a thin wrist, doesn't It look too big? What about current functionalities?
I would love with the new mono link metal band available with delayed shipping on Motorola Moto maker site... Looks better than the other metal bands IMO.
The only two questions now are: - when will the new metal band be available?
- when will the LG Urbane be available?
Those are good questions. Maybe the availability is what will make your decision. I prefer black screens anyway and probably would use the same watch faces even if that little black bar wasn't on the bottom. I don't like that the time is not always showing. If you like both watches equally, and the urbane keeps the watch on always, I suggest you go for that. But if you like the moto's style more, you will forgive it that fault. I am wearing the moto instead of my pebble or lg g despite the moto needing to "wake up" to show time. But I haven't had it long enough to know if that will really bother me. Right now there is no perfect smart watch on the market so we can choose to live with some drawbacks or we can choose to wait at least 6 months and probably more like 2 years for the technology to mature. I choose to not wait. I didn't buy it initially because it was so big and thick, I don't know if I just got accustomed to the size, or if the gold watch and thin band makes it seem smaller, but I like it. The band you want only comes in 22mm size. The slim bands are 18mm and sized to barely fit my wrist, but come with four extra links. I don't think they would fit most men, you should visit a best buy and try a display model if you can, before you buy.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
My 360 easily lasts two days, but I rarely have the need to stay awake for 2 days at a time. Also, I rarely have the need to stare at my watch face all day so I don't need it to stay lit up all day, or for two days at a time.
Two relatively moot points when you think about it logically.
Reportedly, the Urbane will not be using Android Wear
No, there are 2 versions, the Urbane and the Urbane LTE. The LTE version will use LG operating system which derived from webOS
I wear a suit 6 days a week. My moto360 does me good. Compliments from clients every day.

How is your battery life and which watch phone and band do you use?
I got a Nexus 6 and a moto360 black with black pebble link band. I only use the 360 for messages and to tell time. I turned the brightness all the way down and turned off the health stuff. I usually get home with 30-40% life left after 10-12 hours off charger.
I looked at some photos of that particular band and don't really like it. Can't we buy other band on a regular watch store? I really like the look of the new mono link metal band but don't really if and when it will be available in Europe...

I have a Moto 360 and I like it but was hoping for more features. Not being able to make a call through the watch is a letdown, to be honest. And the vibration seems a little low, I miss some of the notifications...Also, framerate*seems a little choppy at time, even with the last 5.0.2 update.*I demand more, I really hope future Android Wear updates make it a little more interesting.
Depending on the model itself, it can be really classy or just passable as a professional device. Either way, it doesn't give off a tacky look that would look out of place when worn with a suit, unless you're wearing a color that obviously doesn't match. The metallic band versions seem to work pretty well, but I don't think the leather bands are that bad. If you are on the fence, though, I'd probably wait for the next iteration of the Moto 360, which has been in the rumour mill for some time to come out in 2015. Especially given that the Moto 360 has a few production or design issues like the backplate being prone to being broken easily, I'd definitely wait.

Thanks for your input. But if you check the post before yours I already bought the 360

Hands-on with the elegant Huawei

What sets the Huawei Watch apart is the “no compromise” round display. Current round devices all make some sort of sacrifice. The Moto 360 has small bezels, but the infamous “flat tire” keeps the display from being perfectly round. LG’s watches manage to have perfectly round displays, but the bezels are very large. Huawei somehow made a smartwatch with minimal bezel and a perfectly round display
The display is 1.4-inch AMOLED with 286ppi, and looks really great. It’s powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor, and has 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, 300mAh battery, and a 6-axis sensor for fitness tracking. The Huawei Watch will be sold in 20 countries (including North America), but we don’t know when it will go on sale or how much it will cost. When it does go on sale it will be available in black, silver, and gold.

This is a really nice smartwatch. Looks stunning too. Much prefer these watches that still maintain the look of a watch
Yes but absolutely no news about is. Almost like it's forgotten ever since it was unveiled

By the pictures, it looks like it has different bands. Not sure where I can even buy this thing though. Huawei has some wearables on taobao but not the watch.
thanks for ur info bro :good::good::good:
I'm debating whether to get the Moto 360 now or wait for the Huawei. I really like that the size of the Huawei is amaller at 42mm compared with 46mm for the Moto as I have a small wrist.
Two things I don't like about the Huawei. One is that is will use a cradle. That I can live with. The other is that it looks like it will not have an ambient light sensor. There is no mention anywhere on their website of it have one, even in the list of sensors in the specification. That may really put me off it.
Thanks for the review. I am looking forward to using this gadget soon

If we want watches with small-to-non bezels we will have to accept that there is no ambient light sensor because there is no place for it. That's why Motorola went for the flat tire design with the first Moto 360 and I guess they will fix that by removing the ambient light sensor in the next version.
Another open question is, if the Huawei Watch will feature WLAN. It is not listed in the specs yet, but the WLAN feature was announced after the presentation of the Huawei Watch, so there's still a good chance it will feature WLAN. (Otherwise it's a killer.)

The Blackview Alife S1 is a special DESIGNER smartphone designed by Dieter Rams, a German master in industrial design. The JDI HD screen is VERY good IMO, very sharp! high brightness and nice colors! And with the Miravision settings, this can be tweaked even more.
The GPS is also very good in this phone, I was able to get 3D Fix and Lock inside my house, and outside the accuracy was better then what I have seen on other China phones in the same price class.
Highlights
- 5.0 Inch Screen, 1280*720 Pixel HD JDI
- MTK6732 1.5GHz Quad Core (64bit)
- 2GB RAM + 16GB ROM
- IR Blaster/Remote control
- Anti-fingerprint coating
- Blackview logo with light
- Samsung 13 MP Back Camera + 5 MP Front Camera
- Android 4.4 System
- Many Sensors, including Gyro Sensor
- Band: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz, WCDMA 900/2100MHz, FDD-LTE B3/B7/B20, Support 2G & 3G & 4G LTE Network

Hi Guys
Mine arrived last Friday after being purchased from Coolicool about three weeks ago. I am having quite a few issues with the phone. The rear camera doesn't appear to be working at all. There is no option in the camera to switch to the rear camera. The front camera for selfies is working and does take selfies quite well even in low light.
However there is nothing from the rear camera at all. I have also tried the torch app to to test the LED and this too is failing. So it seems the whole rear camera is cooked. I have tried contacting Coolicool and am waiting on their response to see what happens next. Might have to open a dispute with Paypal the way this is going...
oh, good, this is really a good smartphone, you can use the coupon to save money.
I've ordered one, should be here next week, but I am surprised at the lack of postings here. I thought this phone would become popular. Any advice from owners?? Any news on the upgrade from 4.4? Not many reviews on the internet either.

Hi sbellseb
I have sent mine back to Coolicool and am waiting on them to troubleshoot the phone and hopefully they will send a replacement very soon. So can't really comment til I get a phone back.
please help: how do i change the lock screen
hello guys, my blackview Alife s1 arrived today. It seems like the lock screen picture cannot be changed. is this truly the case? i hope not cos i really want to change it. does anyone know how to go about it? please help!
You need to go Theme\ Wallpapers and apply picture to lockscreen. Simple
Im really pleased with this phone. Rooted with latest kingroot without any problem. Screen is really bright, pictures are better then on sony xperia sp, elephone p6000 and lenovo a806. Transparent case ruins pictures in low light. Battery is only thing that should be better. With heavy use i cant get more then a half of a day. Some say that alife wont get lollipop update and blackview doesnt comment on that statement.
Bad news about the battery, very surprised there's only a handful of people got this phone for the price and decent specs. Be nice if it gets 5.1
Yea too bad it hasent got a bigger battery. Great performance for buck andno lag at all. It would be nice if we got 5.1 lollipop or some custom roms
i have problems with the battery , it takes so much to fully charge, then suddenly shutdown at 20%
anyone having this problem?
Hi all,
I am using it for a couple of months now. The good: very nice screen, fast, light, no crashes, 4G works fine, gps ok.. The bad: no lollipop coming, camera disapponting (jpeg artefacts?), ir blaster very weak (and no learning mode), and some background hiss on audio out when using the display while listening, battery capacity low, and erratic power-left behaviour (drops fast when almost empty). So usable, but with flaws.

Hi Petepe10
I am surprised you are having issues with the camera. The examples I have seen from some reviewers are very impressive which was the main reason I bought this phone. What issues are you having?
Battery Life
The battery is 2000mAh built in and I get 1.5 days from battery, but I am only a light user. If you are a heavy user, you may struggle to get 1 day from battery. To help things, you can set the screen display at around 30% brightness for indoors, as the JDI IPS display is amazingly bright.

If you charge via usb from PC, then charging is slow, but I have not experienced charging problems. I charge with the AC power charger, with phone turned off for best results. On my S1, the red LED lights when charging and changes to green at 100%. Manufacturers specify the life of Li-ion batteries between 300 and 500 discharge/charge cycles. The big negative with the Alife S1, is that the battery is not replaceable.
Blackview Alife S1, alternative Cover/Cases
My S1 came with a clear clip on plastic case protector. It covers phone on sides and back, but is a bit slippery to hold. I have used my phone for a month and no other cases were available at the time. I discovered that a Sony Xperia Z1 , dimensions 144 x 74 x 8.5 mm , is close to the Alife dimensions 143.5 x 72.5 x 6.8 mm. I ordered a Sony Xperia Z1 wallet leather case and also a generic twin window PU leather case and the Blackview fits both, but is a bit loose on the width.
Just place a few small pieces of blu tack adhesive on corners, along with a small strip of adhesive tape on top of phone to case back and it holds the phone perfectly. Both cases allow access to headphone jack, micro usb port, power and volume buttons on RH side, but cover the loudspeaker on back of the phone. However, I could still hear the audio on playing videos clear, as the Blackview speaker is loud.
I was able to use the camera on the generic twin window Sony case, but the genuine leather case partially blocked the rear camera lens and the case would need to be filed a little on the top cutout. I am using the case daily and happy with it and both are available online. I paid AU$8 for the leather case in Australia and US$5.60 for the PU case from China.
Did anybody open it to see the actual mah?
Isn't its weight too light to be 2000?
I also found a poßible problem in the ROM.

DIGOOR DG2 Plus Review: An Android IP68 Rugged Phone

After years of dropping phones and constantly breaking them. I decided to pickup a cheap IP68 rated rugged Android phone from China rather than paying $300-$500 for a phone locally that offers the exactly same specifications and features for a much higher price. So I thought I''d share my little review of it for everyone to see.

Design:
First of all. This phone is very big, thick and heavy due to it's rugged design that meets the IP68 standards. The body consists of orange hardend plastic that provides protection around the screen and the edges of the black rubberised plastic. This phone has been designed to withstand hard drops and submersion in water. The phone feels solid and easy to hold with a firm grip.
This phone features a lot more buttons than most others. It has the standard power/wake button and volume control, but it also features a speak button for the walkie talkie function, a button to activate the flashlight and a camera button to take pictures. The final and most interesting button would be the SOS button. Using an app on the phone you're able to set that button to dial a number when pressed. However, I had to disable it as I kept making accidential emergency calls, but an idea would be to set it as a number you call regularly.
The DIGOOR DG2 Plus features a 5.0 inch capactive IPS screen that feels responsive and smooth. Thanks to the IPS panel the colours are very clear and the screen visible outside in the sunlight. The screen also comes with a screen protector already installed that helps protect the glass screen from any scratches and damage from drops. The screen also has 3 physical buttons rather than the usual onscreen buttons that a lot of newer phones have these days. The three buttons are, Back, Home and Settings. Having a Settings button is not something I'm used to having after being a Nexus user for so long, but if you long press the Home button, it'll show recent apps.
On the back of the phone, there is the 8MP Camera and the speaker at the top. While at the bottom is the 2 screws that hold the backplate in place that helps make it truly IP68 compliant Removing these 2 screws and the backplate features the battery, both SIM Card slots and the MicroSD card slot. There are also two barcodes with both IMEI numbers on the back as well. The antenna jack is accessible via a screw in flap on the top of the phone and the MicroUSB and headphone jack are accessible via another screw in flap on the bottom. Unfortunately unscrewing the protective flap to access the MicroUSB port can be a pain, but it's necessary to provide adequate protection against dust and water. I usually keep it unscrewed unless I know that I'm going to be in a dirty or wet environment.
Apps and UI:
The DIGOOR DG2 Plus runs on Android 4.4.2 and as a Nexus fan, I was very happy to find that it's running a near stock version of Android with a few minor changes. I checked for the Kitkat easter egg and found that it was there. I do know in the past that some rugged phones have claimed to have Android 4.4, but have actually had Android 4.2. Fortunately DIGOOR have not put any bloat on the phone and a virus scan revealed no viruses of any kind sideloaded on the system. Another perk is that Google Play with Google Services comes preloaded, so you don't have to worry about sideloading or using a dodgy third party market place for apps. Overall I found Android to be very smooth on this device and I haven't encountered any lag while swiping through the app drawer or homescreen which I've found to be an issue with some other Mediatek phones in this price range.
The phone comes with your standard set of apps like all Android phones, but it also comes with a few extras that you won't find on other phones. One of the interesting extras of this phone that's found in settings is the ability to set the phone to automatically power off and power on. It can be configured to power on or off at a specific time and day(s) of the week. I personally don't have a use for this, but a lot of people could probably use it alongside Tasker to improve automation.
The phone also includes an app called Sensor Box that allows you to test the wide variety of sensors on the phone, such as the Accelerometer and Temperature sensor. I found the Orientation sensor to be quite accurate when placed on an uneven piece of wood, so it's particularly useful if you're building something and want to check if it's stable. There is also an app called OOBE, or Out Of Box Experience. I'm fairly certain this app is something already included in Android when you first set the phone up, but it's useful for people not familiar with Android as it shows you how to access the app drawer, notification bar, etc.
The phone also includes NFC with an NFC reader app. This is useful if you're using NFC tags and want to program them to do functions or if you want to use it to make payments using a service like Android Pay or similar. I'm not located in the US, so I can't test out Android Pay, but my bank has an app that allows you to pay via NFC and it works flawlessly.
The phone also includes an walkie talkie app to be used with the included antenna. After setting the correct frequency and using the dedicated button on the side of the phone I've been able to successfully communicate with other walkie talkies in range. I often have to use a walkie talkie to communicate while I'm working onsite and having the walkie talkie inbuilt saves me from having to have an extra device in my pocket. DIGOOR did a good job at implenting this and I wish more phone manufacturers would do the same.
Drop and Water Tests:
In the video below I submerged the phone in water while it was playing a video with sound. The video was able to keep on playing both the sound and picture while underwater and didn't suffer any damage from it. The phone was also thrown onto the ground while playing a video and it survived with minimal damage. The screen was intact and the video kept on playing. It's fair to say that this phone is definitely IP68 as it claims to be.

(Sorry for the portrait video )
Camera Samples:
The DG2 Plus includes a 2MP front facing camera and an 8MP rear facing camera. The cameras in this phone aren't going to get any awards and are no where near as good as what you would find in a Samsung or Sony device, but they get the job done. The sample photos I took are good quality and the colours appear to have come out really well. Being able to use the camera underwater with the dedicated camera button on the side is a huge bonus as well. The only real downside I could find with the camera is HDR. The phone has to be held still otherwise it will be blurred. Part of this is my fault as my hands shake a lot, but having a stand or holding it securely in place will fix this. A different camera app would probably correct this as well.
Both of these photos have been taken with the default settings and have not been modified in anyway:
Sound:
The phone has a single large speaker located on the back of the phone next to the camera on the top. This is an unusual spot as a lot of the phones will have the speaker on the bottom of the phone or next to the microUSB port. The quality of the speaker is decent and surprisingly the sound can be still heard clearly when the phone is submerged in water. The phone also has 4 predefined audio profiles, General, Silent, Meeting and Outdoor, It's a great relief to find that it has a silent profile as that's been removed in Lollipop. There is also an option called BesAudEnh that appears to enhance the Bass Audio when you're listening to music with earphones. The included earphones with phone are decent, but you'd be much better off using some XiaoMi Pistons if you want higher quality audio.
Benchmarks:
A benchmark test aith Antutu only gave a score of 15,941 compared with the much higher scores of the current flagships. This is to be expected as this phone is more catered towards being tough and unbreakable rather than being a powerhouse. While this phone is able to handle apps and most games fine, it will start to lag under pressure from a lot of graphic intensive games. That comes as no surprise since the phone only has 1GB of RAM and a Mali-400 GPU. The phone includes a 3000mAh battery that has managed to go a long way without needing a charge. While my aging Nexus 5 has been losing 30-70% of it's battery in normal everyday use, the DG2 Plus has managed to only lose 10-40% charge in a single day of use.
Conclusion:
The DIGOOR DG2 Plus is a rugged phone with the IP68 rating that has waterproof, dustproof and shockproof properties while remaining cost effective with it's $159.99 US price tag. It's able to properly withstand submersion in water and repeated drops from height without breaking. The idea behind this phone is that it can be used in extreme situations and from my experience so far, it's been able to do exactly that.
Unfortunately the hardware inside isn't the most powerful and there has been no OTA for Android Lollipop or Marshmallow yet, but it's running Android Kitkat which is still quite common and does the job very well. Not having 4G connectivity with 8GB of internal storage is a downside, but it's not a major issue as the phone is a massive bargain due to it's low price. Rugged phones may still be a niché product for a lot of people, but with the tough design and special features such as the walkie talkie function, I can see these phones becoming much more popular in the future.
The phone is definitely meeting my requirements and has survived some serious falls so far. If this was any other phone I'm sure it would have broken by now. I haven't encountered any mobile network drop outs, Android hasn't slowed down and the battery life has been good so far.
So if you're looking for a cheap rugged phone with an IP68 rating that does the job well and high end specs aren't really a concern? Then this is the phone for you!

It is not nessesary to unskrew the flap. You can pull it open and leave the screw where it is. It works like a hinge.
I'am using the digoor dg2 since august, thats 3 monts now. Its a great robust phone. The only thing i missed is a notification led.

That's actually a really good idea. Why didn't I think of that?
So how user friendly is the walkie talkie function, does it scan, can it be used while the phone is in normal standby?

now arrived so thats another week with no spare phone.... Thank goodness my Meizu M2 and S6 Blade are OK
My 2 problems are handset goes to sleep / switches off many times if on standby, even with battery full, only way to get it back on, is to connect a charger and wait 2 minutes
Nightmare !
and I have in my Wifi settings an error all the time (even although wifi does work) NVRAM WARNING:Err = 0x10
Do you think the 2 could be related ? Would this cause the handset to power off ?
Thanks
PS I've started a new thread in help also, hopefully it gets noticed

Sounds good
I'm interested on this or another good IP68 certified below $200, still not sure about No. 1 M2 or Jeep Z6 I read they failed a lot but some says it works great
Anyone seen any Android firmware updates for these ?
Thanks
