[Q] Voice commands on Fire TV? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm thinking about buying the Fire TV as the hardware is amazing for the money.
Now I don't often watch movies and such, so my plan is to turn the device into a home automation center, using the mic in the remote and maybe a combination of utter! and Tasker to do different things like turning on a remote control outlet using ssh and a raspberry pi or just turning on and off a Phillips Hue.
Will those things be doable in the near future?

In theory anything is *possible*. But as of now, no one has hooked in to the microphone handling. I wonder how the remote presents itself if paired to a normal Linux computer as far as bluetooth capabilities.

Is it then possible to connect the fire TV with another mic, in case the builtin one is not usable for my goal? Also, are Tasker and utter! running fine on the fire TV?

If we are talking about using AOSP, whatever is possible on a regular Android device would be possible here. No clue about Tasker.

Yes, if it was running pure AOSP, I would not have had to ask. I've seen that you are the one trying to get AOSP run on the Fire TV, so I would like to know how the chances are that we get functional AOSP on the Fire TV before March next year. Either way, thanks for working on that.

I have it booting but I haven't done much with it. I have been mainly focusing on recovery. I want to try to get cm booting on it once I've got recovery released.

XBOX One and Ouya Passthrough

Now I can't be the only one doing this so I am looking for some support.
I have an Xbox One and use my Ouya primarily for XBMC. I had the Ouya working through the pass through HDMI, but now it is struggling to keep the signal.
Anyone have any suggestions or solutions to make it consistently keep the signal?
I am still using amp restart trick to get passthrough working on ouya. If you find some other solution or configuration setting on your amp/tv/ouya post it.

Works great for me on my XBone. Have it running through a HDMI splitter that has the PS3 and Ouya both going through it. The Ouya is very passive regarding wanting to display, but as long as the PS3 is off it's been rock solid for me. Actually watching a TV show through XBMC on the Ouya through the XBone. For the voice controls. It's nice to be able to control the volume by talking.
I love the hdmi passthrough, and the multitasking. Playing titanfall and forza while watching tv is nice. So far i haven't had any issues, maybe the next ouya will have CEC and will work better with the xbox one.

[Q] anyone got CEC working?

Before I had a firetv I used a raspberry pi which I controlled via my tv remote. very usefull, especially for my girlfriend. does someone know how to enable CEC on my fire tv?
thanks
It is enabled by default. The only thing that it does is to switch on your tv when you switch on your fire tv. And change the input source of your tv.

No. It allows control over CEC if your TV is cool enough. I was able to use arrow keys and select over CEC. I think back even worked.
hmm my LG TV doesn't see my firetv.. or does it only work when xmbc is started?

CEC is nothing to do with XBMC. If it works depends really on your TV. I just got lucky that my Toshiba supported it. But it is very limited and not really a good choice for control.
Actually CEC could be so much better than it is. Problem is every manufacturer calls it something else, and only enables certain features. And the limits don't just apply to any one device.
My whole entertainment system has CEC capable devices. My TV, my AVR, my PS4, chromecast, and when I had a HTPC it also had CEC via RCAware and event ghost. When I used a HTPC, everything revolved around it. If it was sleeping, all devices would be powered off, if it was awake, I could setup event ghost to tell it which devices to wake. Event ghost gave the user the control to create scripts/programs, and pick and choose what devices should do what. Device manufacturers don't give us that choice, in the limited controls they enable.
My samsung UN55D8000 TV won't automatically turn on other devices when it's turned on, because samsung doesn't think people should do that. Instead they want you to go through a bunch of menu's and manually select a device and then it turns in on via CEC. But they allow the TV to send power off commands to all CEC devices when the TV is powered off.
If you play to a chromecast from your phone/tablet, it will automatically turn on your TV and switch to the correct input. But it won't turn on my AVR that it is plugged in to.
It all comes done to the manufacturers, and how them implement it, and what control and/or features they allow the consumers to use. I wish someone would create a standalone device that can be programmed to do what you want (like my RCAware and event ghost combo), but without the need of a host OS.

[Q] Amazon Fire TV + XBMC -> CEC functionality in detail ?

Hey guys,
I just pre-ordered an Amazon Fire TV here in Germany and I have a specific question for which I didn't find an answer yet. Everybody is saying that the AFTV has basic CEC functionality. I just wanted to know what this means in detail? Which keys are working and which are not? I heard that the arrow keys and the OK/select key are working. But what about the back, the home and the multimedia buttons (play/pause etc.)? I would be very glad if someone could answer this question (espacially with a Sony Bravia TV).
Thanks in advance. I'm looking forward for an answer.

I would like to know that too. I have a Samsung tv and the only cec function I can see fire tv performing is when I wake the device up from sleep it automatically shifts my tv from cable to fire tv screen and turns on the sound system if its off. But nothing on the TV remote works.

Damn. So for now its unusable via CEC, right? Without a back button it's not possible to exit menus... Could you try the media buttons too, please? I mean play/pause/stop. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure play/pause worked for me. But I just got a FLIRC. Much better and more flexible.
Not working for me. Panasonic TV.
with pi it works perfectly...
actually the TV DO recognize there's a hdmi CEC supported device but none of the buttons do something
Tested on Sanyo TV designed for use with roku.
Directions and media buttons work.
Back works (but brings up roku qr overlay)
the Exit button also functions as Back.
Hey,
My FireTV is connected to my Onkyo TX-NR626 amp and from there to my LG TV, I can control the FireTV with the remote of the Onkyo and everything is working, select, back, directions, play, pause, and skip
But you have to enter a code for a RIHD (CEC) enabled device on the remote, the code is 31612 if I'am not wrong
The only thing that is not working is you can't wake up the FireTV out of the standby
Gesendet von meinem HTC One_M8 mit Tapatalk
Sony Bravia Sync
Tested on an old KDL55-W4000!
Sony calls its CEC compatibility "Bravia Sync". With "Bravia Sync" activated, the following commands work via my TV's remote: Play, Stop, Back-Button, Forward, Rewind, Direction-Keys and Enter ...
With the Sony-Command "Sync Menu", the TV checks for connected devices at HDMI ports and even activates the FireTV from sleep-mode ... If the FireTV is activated, the same button "Sync Menu" opens the Options in FireTV (e.g. skipping to next episode or language selection)
Unfortunately, the only button not yet found by now via CEC, is the "HOME" button. By that button missing, you might get stucked, e. g. in the youtube app for FireTV, because the Back-Button does not go back to main menu of FireTV but stays in the YouTube-App and shows the Search-Site ...
If anyone has a Sony-TV, sending a "HOME"-command via CEC, please contact me, so I can properly set up my Harmony to send the command on my Sony-TV, too (sometimes, not all commands the tv is capable of, are buttons on the remote ... let's give it a try).
Hope, that has helped someone ... Please get back to me, if "Home" is available. Otherwise, I will not use YouTube-App
I don't know anything about CEC on other platforms. I just got a Fire TV two days ago.
I was very happily surprised when my TV's remote (Sony Bravia 47") worked on the Fire. My Girlfriend grabbed the TV remote as we were setting the fire up, and many of the commands were mapped to Sony remote buttons. Since I had cloned the remote to my Universal Remote URC20, it also works. I can create macros and treat the Fire TV like it has an IR remote. Very handy functionality.
All I have done is navigation, backward, forward, select, etc. Of course, you need the Fire remote for voice control.
Someone in another thread said that Samsung TVs didn't run commands back through HDMI. So, obviously ot depends on TV manufacturer.
On my LG TV, CEC is not working. In fact when Fire TV is connected CEC is not working for any device connected to the TV.
I had no problem with a rasberry PI used before I got the Fire TV.

Hmm. What year is the TV? My 2013 LG remote has no problem with the Fire TV.
Cec is a pita for me and my lg 55ub8500, it works fine if you have the TV on and then power the firetv on.. But if you have the firetv on and power on the TV.. It's a no go until you restart the ftv. Would be ok I'd the ftv would turn off but mine stays on like 24/7.
If your lg TV is new (2014) turn on simplink in the menus and setup your hdmi port to be a denon Avr(or any device that supports cec, not all do) and it should work

Same on my 2013 Sony TV, the remote's HOME button functions as Android's MENU button, whilst the remote's OPTIONS button does nothing. Shame, so close to being perfect. Still hoping the Fire TV will get a working root and that we can change the HDMI-CEC options that way.
I just bought a Noname 40" TV (Hisense LTDN40D36SEU) and was really surprised that it supports CEC quite well!
Nav, OK, Play, Pause, < Skip > and even Stop (! Not even on the Fire TV Remote itself) are working perfectly.
Just hoping to find a way to get Home and Context working. As theres a way to go to a Developer-Page on the TV, even with dumping firmware Option, im optimistic to get it fixed one day. Or, even better as Spence1115 said, hopefully Someday Root on the FireTV and a way to change it over here.
i had conflict on my samsung smart tv 2014 when connecting the AFTV it also played havoc with my receiver so i have decided to use a cec less adaptor and it worked a treat just in case anyone wanted to know and if they get conflicts (mine was connecting and disconnecting all my devices randomly)
Hi.
I just got a LG 42lb5600 and I can't even see the simplink option.
No buttons work on the fire.
Is there a firmware update or something I can do?
I hope that one day we will get the ability to program certain key presses through CEC on the Fire TV. Works great with sideloaded Kodi on my fireTV Stick but sadly no context or home functionality.

Amazon Fire controller 2 with Nvidia Shield TV?

Is this possible? Seems it was previously but I have had no luck so far. Its a Bluetooth controller and should in theory, have no problems, yet its not.
Could this be something resolved in Marshmallow? Or is it a non starter altogether?
Just want some multiplayer action, have a shield controller already and had a fire TV 4k with pad as well.
Thanks in advance
Well that was easy. Turns out the fire controller 2 is WiFi and not Bluetooth. It connects like a charm as a Shield accessory and plays games as it should.
So if anyone, like me reads this and has been struggling like a fool (that was me the past hour) to connect it, its WIFI not Bluetooth. Connect this and a FireTV 2 remote as a shield accessory and away you go.
Edit - voice search also works, which I had seen people stating you most it, or couldn't pair the AFTV voice remote with the Shield TV because of it. Just press and hold and works as it does on the fire box.

Thats actually pretty dope to learn! i havent played with a fire tv controller 2 yet but just seeing the images online it looks like a high quality, sturdy controller. Would be interesting to see how well it performs, and the fact that it works natively with the shield is even more interesting and better. wonder if nvidia just updated the firmware to allow it to work or if they just so happen to use the same protocols?
couple of questions: is the button layout the same? does headphone jack work as well?

The headphone jack doesn't work. Just tried with Borderlands and it works, though with some lag on the Shield controller but not the Fire 2 controller.
Every other button functions perfectly though, including clicking in the anologues. As a second player pad, and with the useful voice search function, its pretty cool that I got it connected. Could not find any help online at all.

Thats awesome man. Thanks for the heads up! Would love to see anyone else chime in to confirm before i consider the plunge on a controller, but its always nice to have another type of gamepad available. Wonder if latency is the same, but I assume since its wifi, it shoudl be at least as good as the shield controller.
Do you know if this works with a pc as well? (via usb of course)

Won't work on PC, not with USB anyway as its not there lol. Surprised me too.
Latency seems on par with stock controller. Been playing Fifa 16 UT for a while and won every game, so no issues with the pad.
I too would like others to test this as I couldn't get any help online and cane across it by chance.
has anyone tried the new apple r emoe does it work?
how do you past the settings menu on the fifq 16 android on the shiled. do you need mouse input?
My problem is that once it connects I lose all audio.
The headphone Jack not working is a real bummer too.
Fifa 16 UT does this game even work? i cant get past main menu

I managed to connect the Fire TV game controller on StockRestyle Marshmallow, but I cannot get the Fire TV 4K remote to work.
Which version of the Shield TV firmware are you using?
Do you need to press a specific button on the Fire TV remote? I tried Home and the OK buttons (I indeed tried all of them), removing the batteries without any success.
EDIT: I tried a second Fire TV 4K, first try: press Home -> success Thanks

If that would be working, including the voice search function, that would be great because shield game controllers aren't working wireless on full Android.

I'm having major problems connecting my Amazon Controller 2 to my Shield K1 Tablet.
I go to the app and open it up. The 3 or 4 lights flash on the controller and then solidify. At which point the mouse cursor appears and I can move it around and - if I press home, the app closes.
But at that stage the controller starts searching again, the lights flash.
I've tried holding down the home button, I've tried putting the batteries in only once the apps open. No luck.
The controller works beautfully with my amazon fire tv box.
Anyone want to give me step by step instructions?

Did anybody solved this issue!?

Amazon Fire TV turns on BY ITSELF! Is there a ghost in my machine?

My Amazon Fire TV goes to sleep just fine, but several times a week, the Amazon Fire TV will turn on by itself! This is annoying because it also turns our Samsung TV on as well.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Is there a ghost in my machine? LOL
i have no idea bout the fire tv (stick) cause its close sourced and you cant access the bootloader/system software to fix that, and i dont own one to figure it out myself. But what tv are you using, many tvs have advanced hdmi settings where you can disable remote control using hdmi and thereby only enable a/v using hdmi. I dont know if your television set has such a setting but my lg tv has something like that, i have disabled this to listen to music using my stereo from the blu ray player (over upnp/dlna) without the tv switched on...
have a look at your tv user guid for example, or thell us the tv model so we could check.
If there is no way doing that by tv just unplug your tv or use a hdmi switch with an remote control between the fire box and the tv to workaround...
i wish you much suggest on this issue, i can imagine that this is a pain in the ass.
By the way dose your fire stick has a separated power supply, if so you could also switch this one on and off wireless...

Thanks! I have the regular Amazon Fire TV, not the stick. But, I'll see if my TV will let me disable the remote "on" feature.
It should. I remember that my TV would turn on in the middle of the night. Lol creepy. Since then I had disabled the option on my TV.
Whew I'm glad I'm not the only one!
I don't get why this stupid Fire TV does that?
I'm relatively new to Firestick but mine randomly turns on the TV and changes the input back to the HDMI port into which the Firestick is plugged. It has done it 3 times this evening ! That is AFTER I changed the input BACK to the cable system each time. It is definitely demanding attention !
Both of my Fire TVs (1 and 2) do this, and it's not repeatable. In my case, it happens at the moment when SPMC is supposed to suspend, but not every time. I'd love to have it work so I can hit one button on my Fire TV remote and have it start up my TV and reciever, but I can't get it to work, so I've disabled HDMI CEC on the Fire TV 2. I'll do more testing on my Fire TV 1 soon.
I have a two fire sticks, Samsung TVs, and both are setup to turn on when I push home button on the fire remote. The main TV is recently turning on, it gets 1000 times the usage. It is now doing it when watching other things or while playing online games - not cool! I’ll check back soon since this thread has been sitting
Our Firestick has also started to turn the TV on by itself and also when we are watching other mediums. This is not cool Amazon. You need to get ahold of this.
Turn off CEC in your tv settings
No great solution so far
It seems like there ought to be a way to solve this problem without simply dumbing-down our TVs and disabling a pretty darn convenient convenience feature.
Unless you really need the firestick to be able to turn the TV off and on, you can go into settings on the firestick and select display and sound, then you see something called "HDMI CEC Device Control, and turn it off. This may or may not work. We just found it.
So I just started having this issue. But it happening when the TV is on another input say my cable box. I'll be watching cable and then the Amazon fire TV will switch inputs. When I use my Amazon control and I am watching cable and hit a button, the Amazon tv would switch input which was great. But now no one is going the Amazon remote and the into is being swapped. Just started happening this month has to be some update Amazon made.
So I have the same issue. I have both a firestick and a Chromecast. I want to keep anynet enabled so that Chromecast can turn on and off the TV through voice command with Google home. It comes in handy when the kids are up early on Saturday and I don't feel like leaving bed, I'll ask Google to turn on the TV and put Netflix for them lol.
Anyhow my solution was to power the firestick from the USB port found on the tv. So when. The TV is off firestick is off ...no more random TV on's
I recently began having this issue as well on my firestick. I have had CEC turned on for months and it has not been an issue until a couple of days ago. I have noticed that my firestick has booted to Netflix each time it turns on by itself. Netflix has been the last app used, so tonight I am trying to back out of every app; especially Netflix, to see if that has anything to do with my random boot ups.
This issue don't happen on Apple TV.
But power down your amazon fire each time. (press select + play at same time for 5 seconds).
fire stick auto starting
Just curious, did this work? I noticed that it is doing in only when the last thing i watched was netflix also. so im thinking it's actually a netflix app issue. what did you find out by backing out of netflix before turning off? did the firestick autostart at all after you backed out?

I recently began having this issue as well on my firestick. I have had CEC turned on for months and it has not been an issue until a couple of days ago. I have noticed that my firestick has booted to Netflix each time it turns on by itself. Netflix has been the last app used, so tonight I am trying to back out of every app; especially Netflix, to see if that has anything to do with my random boot ups.

It's not rebooting. It's was NEVER turned off.
The solution is too power off the device. Yes it's an extra step to inconvenient your busy life but it is what it is.
I just got the second generation fire stick after Thanksgiving, which I'm using on an older Mitsubishi dlp. It changes the tv's input at will. I also have a PS3, which has always acted in a similar manner. More specifically, the playstation turns itself right back on after I press the power button to turn it off. Both are pretty annoying.
Just turn off the CEC in Settings > Sounds & Display. With CEC enabled every time AMAZON Fire TV wakes up or Switches to Home it would Switch the TV on or Switch the TV Source ... very annoying. New Fire TV OS allows you to turn this feature off
