[Q] Connect to card reader and external hard drive? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I'm wondering if it's possible to connect a card reader device AND an external hard drive to my Nexus 7 for the sole purpose of transferring FROM card reader TO hard drive?
I'm thinking I would need:
- USB OTG cable
- Powered USB hub?
- USB card reader
- USB hard drive
would it work? How fast would it likely transfer, say 4gb?

I've never tried anything like that but what little I know I think you need to be rooted and use an app called StickMount which requires root to work. And I think you will need a custom kernel to have NTFS and exFAT support. I use the ElementalX kernel which has NTFS and exFAT support but most if not all custom kernels probably have that support also. Transfer speed probably wouldn't be that great because I think the bootleneck would be the speed class of the memory card. I would be surprised to see speeds higher than 20-30 MB/s. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable in doing what your trying to do will jump in here and enlighten both of us!

yes it can be done I use flash drives all the time. I also hook up my seagate 1tb backup to my nexus 5&7. you will only need an otg cable or adapter. a hub if you intend to use a keyboard and mouse. ive never done that but have heard of it being done. im runnig cyanogen on these devices however ive used usb card readers and a 64 gb 3.0 flash on my m8 full stock. 4.4 will accept external usb ive read. just try it you"ll like it

Hi. Can you give detailed information about using BA as a usb host? (hardware, software, how to... etc.) Thnx.
Note: In fact I want to use, for example, my usb keyboard or usb hdd on my BA. Is it possible?
card export II enable you to use your BA (any wm device) as mass storage with memory card.
evoluzzione wants to connect a usb flash drive on his BA.
is there something like sd to usb adapter? which connects usb devices to sd ports.
special SD cards has either wifi or usb plug.

Use external card reader with GNex

Is it possible to use a micro usb cable with a female standard USB plug on the other end and plug a USB SD card reader in to get photos off the card? Does that make sense? Basically I'm trying to get photos off a SD card without access to a computer.

Not sure but could you just upload them somewhere? Dropbox, Drive, Box.net, etc?

[Help] OTG cable problem

Hello, i have bought a OTG adaptor but when i connect a USB pen to my Sony Xperia S it doesn't do anything.
I have also tested:
- USB pen FAT32
- USB pen NTFS
I know that this adaptor is working because the store owner tested it on a tablet and it worked.
Stange thing is that i tried to connect to a zte blade, Galaxy Gios and nexus 7 and it didn't work as well....
However when i connect it to the computer the adaptor works...
Stock .55
No root
Can someone advise me?
Thanks
Root your phone and download USB OTG Helper from the Play Store.

I have many FAT32 USB flash drives that work fine with my XPERIA S no problems.
I have not confirmed this myself, but it is possible the amps provided by the Sony XPERIA S(LT26i) could be as low as 100mA.[citation needed]
Can't find any documented specs for XPERIA S and USB power supplied and/or USB flash drive which also has a known documented amp draw for reference.
I'd really quite like to know what amps the XPERIA S USB port provides.
I have a USB thumb drive that doesn't work on my XPERIA S namely the HP v165w 8GB (FAT32 formatted)
It just comes up with a big red warning triangle saying, "USB Power Consumption error"
However the USB thumb drive HP c330w 8GB does work (NTFS formatted)
Many other SanDIsk FAT32 formatted USB thumb drives also work fine. Namely the SanDisk USB 2.0 Cruzer Facet 32GB
I have downloaded Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+ which allows me to successfully mount NTFS formatted flash drives on my root'd XPERIA S.
My 'Desktop' FV-1 Android box with three USB ports/HDMI etc, mounts anything and everything, including the HP v165w 8GB USB thumb drive. So it just means no two Android devices are equal in design and power.
it should work anyway? I've seen a few shots and youtube movies where the USB on-the-go was working on an XS!

Hope someone will Chinese!!!
Connecting U disk need to install a USB storage management software (the software requires root permissions and busybox). Insert OTG and USB flash drive's lights. Then click connect.
The USB file so that you can in SDcard \ usbStorage see.
You can also connect a hub so you can connect a mouse and keyboard like if you want to connect to a large power equipment, so that you need a powered hub. Strong practical ability, but also can directly plug in the power in OTG online peel.
this is what google translates for me! pretty weird to read like this. but maybe we can figure it out?!

In my honest option, I agree with SNYXPR, there should be no requirement for additional software on a standard build XPERIA S(LT26i) when using "supported" FAT32 formatted USB storage.
If the FAT32 formatted USB flash drive you have attached to the XPERIA S meets the power requirements you should be fine.
No software I know of is going to boost the power supplied by the MicroUSB port and at best, any application for USB storage is only able to support additional drive formats like NTFS etc.
I've had/have USB flash drives, Logitech Unifying Mouse/Keyboard attached without problems.
I've got a Galaxy Note Connection kit Model: DR03-S2 and that works fine and I'm able to read/write SD cards, MicroSD cards and USB flash drives using it without problems(one attached device in use at any one time).
If you go to the next step and use a powered USB hub, then a wider array of devices can be used with the XPERIA S as the USB hub is providing the power to connect the device. This includes USB printers and FAT32 formatted USB 80GB plus HDD (both IDE and SATA) etc. Also all those FAT32 formatted storage devices that said the XPERIA S did not meet the power requirement work too.
Remember the XPERIA S only support FAT32 formatted storage by default(natively).
As part of my desktop setup I have the following connection.
Sony DK10 dock plugged into a Aten USB switch which is connected to a powered USB Targus 7 port Hub.
This gives me access to USB mouse/keyboard, USB flash drives or USB HDD of any size, printer, SD card reader on my DELL U2410 monitor and etc.
Then it's just a button press to (USB)switch back to my Notebook, Desktop PC and any other device connected as part of my desktop environment.
Thank you for the replies, i think root is not required since i have seen a vídeo made by XperiaBlog that just connects a USB pen drive to Xperia S and it just works. I have tried a Kignston 8 GB and it doesn't connect, not event to nexus 7 ...

Question LOGIK LCRAC23 USB Type-C & USB 3.0 Memory Card Reader work on galaxy fold 4

Hey people, recently purchased a
LOGIK LCRAC23 USB Type-C & USB 3.0 Memory Card Reader and with the intention to transfer music, films and video onto a micro SD card, unfortunately using "My Files" it doesn't seem to see the device / sd card, does anyone know if its possible to or if there's a work around?
Thanks in advance

Firestick OTG question

All the OTG adapters I've seen seem to be USB 2.0. Is it worth buying usb 3.0 thumb drives to extend the internal memory? does the 4k Max firestick support usb 3 drives over its the micro usb port?
I tried following the OS v6 method of adding a external USB 3.0 (Intergral 512GB) device using 50/50 and a AUVIPAL OTG adapter
Looked like it worked successfully to me.
I've moved SmartTube and Kodi to the exeternal storage, but I found the apps to be very very sluggish.
However, I factory reset the Fire Stick and then plugged in the USB and followed the prompt on screen to use it as external drive, it formatted the drive and recognised it.
I installed Kodi and SmartTube and they run fine.
I've noticed that apps that have USB support take a bit of time to install (as they're installed on USB) but once they are installed, they generally seem to work fine.
So, to answer your question, I think the speed is limited to USB 2 even if you use a USB 3 drive
