I'm in the market for a new device as my contract is up and I my Dinc isn't doing it for me anymore, even with ICS installed. I want to know what some of you guys with experience with both of the phones think I should do. The main improvements that I want out of my next smartphone are in order:
1 - Display - mainly size
2 - Microhphone - I'm a songwriter and record song ideas to my phone all the time. the Dinc's mic is awful and distorted at anything louder than a speaking voice.
3 - Battery - I realize that with batteries not getting much bigger and LTE coming on board that this may be a pipe dream ... but I'd like to get an 8AM to midnight day out of my next phone.
4 - On board speaker - I miss calls regularly on my Dinc because it isn't loud enough and I've had to replace the speaker once already.
Here are my winners of the two after handling them in the store:
1 - Display - LG
2 - Microphone - LG by long shot (noise cancellation) - Rezound's is just as bad as my Dinc's

DEV Support - Rezound wins this by long shot, but the Spectrum is brand new, so there's no real telling what the Dev community will look like. What are the chances the Spectrum gets CM9?
WIFI Tether - I assume LG is rootable, since most LGs have unlocked bootloader & NitroHD has been rooted. Am I wrong to assume it will be rooted or does anyone know if it's happened yet?
Extra Points:
LG also had random issue of GPS not connecting while in verizon store. That could be seriously annoying.
Rezound's camera also kills LG's but I never take pictures, so it doesn't matter to me. The Mic superiority would make it easy for me to make this trade-off.

I too have an AMOLED DInc and am considering using my upgrade. I was looking at Verizon's latest crop of HD LTE phones, including the Galaxy Nexus, RAZR (qHD is not True HD), Rezound, and Spectrum. Out of all of them I personally prefer the Spectrum; I prefer its display (IPS RGB LCD beats PenTile SAMOLED or SLCD IMO), and there's something about the phone I just like despite being able to put my finger on it.
That being said, will I use my upgrade for it? NO.
Why? Phones using Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 SoC will be coming out soon, like 2Q. The chipset is 28nm, which will offer better performance while using less power, and includes one radio chip that covers all standards and thus will will use less power itself.

I really want the Spectrum and keep finding myself drawn to it for the reasons you outlined. And the Spectrum will be able to do the few things that my DInc can't, like HDMI out via MHL over microUSB.
If I can hold out until May or June, I should be able to get an even better phone. And I won't mind paying $300 for a phone that I will keep for almost two years, versus a $200 phone I will want to replace before the end of the year. Yeah, I know waiting always will get me better hardware. But why use my upgrade so few months before a new generation of chips come out?
Look at it this way: would someone who bought a DROID Bionic have pulled the trigger knowing that the RAZR was right around the corner? What about those people who recently got a DROID 3 only to find out the DROID 4 is coming soon?
I'm pretty sure a new phone in June will be able to go at least a year before an incremental increase in performance hits the market, and even then it won't be a big enough increase to justify replacing your phone. While the jump from Snapdragon S1 to S3 is huge, a few months later the jump from S1 to S4 will be even bigger and will come with less of a battery-usage penalty.
I think if you're definitely going to get a new phone, get the Spectrum. Root it, debloat it, and run a different launcher (I tried LauncherPro on it in the store and it worked fine). But if you can wait, just hold on a bit longer...
p.s. I wouldn't worry too much about GPS connectivity INSIDE OF A BUILDING. ;-)
Thanks for talking me off the ledge. It seems like neither phone is worth it with the battery gains that are on the horizon. I tried to do the same for a friend who got the bionic and he regrets not listening.

I get 15 hours or so on average with medium usage. The battery life for the LG is good, but it really depends what you're doing.
As for the GPS, this is the best GPS I've used in a smartphone BY FAR.
Is the Rezound camera that much better? The LG camera is pretty good too, especially the 1080p recording.
And yes, I tested the noise cancellation and recording quality myself. I'd have to say that it's nothing short of fantastic.

HI, could you elaborate on these battery gains on the horizon you mention?
It's my understanding the upcoming quadcore phones can't manage batteries any better and as far as my research goes, the only new battery tech on the horizon is lithium-air technology.
OP: I'm talking myself off the ledge too.
I REALLY want the LG Spectrum, and I need to keep reminding myself why I should wait. I think I'll read that link quite a few times before I upgrade to an S4 Krait processor.

ICS + s4 + trending towards bigger batteries (razr maxx)= my feeling that we'll have a device that can surf 4g all day before too long

I will be the one to break it to you- This is not a forward movement in tech, fact is, there's no real data to back this up.
putting a bigger gas tank on a sports car is not a tech advancement. any device can connect with brick of a battery. that's not anything new. quad core will use the same battery technology that we all have access to.

I mentioned nothing about quad core. Qualcomm's s4 chips will have 28nm size and a tightly integrated radio that will use battery power much more efficiently.
I will be avoiding the exact scenario that you're describing with the new quad core phones that will be gobbled up by the masses just because they have quad in their name. Google it or click the link provided by liteon163 above.

also I think I am just frustrated at the lack of battery development overall & it especially hits a nerve with these devices.
Does Anybody use Note 2 as their primary MP3 Player? How's the Wolfson Audio? I hoping to phase out my iPod 1st Generation (its been working for all these years; still strong, but need more capacity, lol)

He states that his device is, "My device is a 64GB Marble White Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SHV-E250L for Korea."
I guess it may be another reason to anticipate the upcoming OTA.......if we get it before the phone is obsolete.

I know mayne , I can't believe the GS2 is getting it before us :/
I stopped using my ipod when I got my S2. Now I have a spotify account and have been so happy with having all that music at my disposal and not having to fill up my SD card. Plus the rom I'm on doesn't support 64gb anyways.

Sometimes I use my Droid X as my iPod Touch type device. This saving battery juice of my Galaxy Note 2 for later. But more and more I am using my Galaxy Note 2 as my main media player device. Both devices have the same good collection of music in their SD cards. But for me it is easier just to enjoy the music on the same device as I do other things with. More often than not I listen to streaming music and radio rather than I listen to music on my SD card.. For me having unlimited data services allows me to not worry about how much data I using while listening to music and radio online. So for me listening music files on my SD card is older school of doing things.
But yes, Galaxy Note 2 is a very good MP3 player. I enjoy the quality from Galaxy Note 2.
Note - My Droid X has FM radio. So I do use that as my portable FM radio.

I am using Wicked Jawbreakers earphones from Alliance that I got couple of years ago. They are very good sound quality coming from earphones. Yes, you can use over-the-ear headphones with Galaxy Note 2. I don't like Sony headphones, earphones, speakers or sound equipment because Sony sound is a little harsh and too colored for me. I like Sennheiser for headphones and Alliance for earphones. Both companies make very good sound quality and very affordable head/earphones.
Absolutely. I use Spotify as my main source of music and it's fantastic. I have it connected via Bluetooth in my car and it sounds fantastic. Although I've been using my phone as my main Mp3 player now since the original iPhone.
Anyone know how to import playlists from computer to the phone?
I'm looking for a bluetooth heaphone that sounds good, comfortable, and lasts 8+ hours. Trying out the beats wireless right now.

Go to Headfi.org, that's the forum you should go to re: headphones/earbuds.
I personally love my Sony MDR-EX310LP earbuds which i got off a deal on Amazon for $38. (50% off MSRP).
Klipsch S4's are highly rated (can get them for ~$37 on a deal, actually got a pair coming in this past wednesday off Amazon).
Monster Turbine series are actually quite good (but don't buy ANYTHING else from them)
I also like the Sennheiser CX-300's too, but i like the feel of the sony buds better.
As you can tell, my experiences are on the "low" end of things in terms of headphones (I have heard some good things about the Sony XBA-4's which have a MSRP of $350, but then again, I'm kinda a Sony fanboy).
If budget is a concern (which unless you can afford $500 headphones/earbuds it is), I'd recommend going to slickdeals.net and grabbing whichever headphone/earbud people think is a good deal, which usually means good performance for the price.
Rule of thumb: NEVER buy Beats... unless they're 90% off... seriously.

I had the S7E and frankly the headphone audio was terrible. I've since moved to the HTC 10 and the audio is excellent.
Now I'm not expecting HTC level audio, but something better then the s7e would be nice. Even just better software processing.
Has anybody compared any of these devices from an audio standpoint?
Since it's the same hardware as the S7 I'd expect the same sub-par sound quality unfortunately. The US version keeps getting the shaft in this regard.

I had the S7 Edge and it wasn't bad just not as good as the HTC 10 - audio on the HTC was a standout feature.
I wish Samsung would put more effort in this area - in their defense though, they have been known to include some nice Wolfson DAC's in past Galaxy phones like the Note 5. I think it varies depending on which model you purchase (Exynos/Qualcomm).
Apple is rumored to improve audio on the iPhone 7 since they remove the headphone jack, so let's see if Samsung responds and gives more attention to it on the S8 and beyond.

I had the Exynos S7E & that was pants in the audio dpt both headphone & speaker. It's not a good start for the N7 - $h it audio,,,,

This is why I'm thinking of getting a Note 4 C to go with my Note 5, cause that was brilliant with audio having a wolfson dac.
How does the S7 compare to the Note 4, S4 or S5 in audio quality? You guys have me nervous about my pre-order since I use headphones so much. I don't have anything super fancy, just some Shure SE215's

It depends if you call booming bass and searing highs 'good quality' audio?
If you care about music reproduction the Exynos version is actually very good. - Wolfson co-developed Lucky DAC.
I also have a Audio quest Dragonfly Black external DAC and although I use it if I listen critically the difference is not night and day.
If you're unlucky enough to have the Snapdragon version (for several reasons) you won't enjoy your audio as much. It uses the integrated chip.
Headphone amplifier power is limited in both versions. It goes plenty loud (for many unfortunately the decisive factor as to 'good sound') but it won't please head bangers.
If you value your hearing you probably won't want to go there.
The included head buds are useless by the way. I'd bin them asap.

Note 4 N910C was totally fine [at least for my non-professional view] w/o Viper. I didn't want to root for 6 months or so in order not to null my warranty. Right now it's even better w Viper. I wish someone can review and make side-by-side comparison for Note 7 (I guess Exynos version) and Exynos Note 4 in terms of SQ!

The Note 7 has Qualcomm's new Aqstic codec, and the S7E does not. This is the same one used in the HTC M10. That should help some, although the amp may be the weak link in the chain at this point.

Either way, you would be better off using an outboard DAC as mentioned previously or something like a high resolution player from Fiio if you want the last ounce of performance.
No phone will come close to a well implemented and dedicated player.
Forget about Viper and other similar players. Pretty lights that's it. It will do absolutely nothing for your audio other than adding some fancy looking equalizers. Use either Samsungs own player or the one from Google. Black player is another good one and simple.

I'm monitoring http://www.head-fi.org/ time to time. I guess sooner or later some reviews of Note 7's SQ will appear!
I'm on the verge of picking up a new phone. I originally wanted the Note 7, but waited and then heard about the LG V20 with its Quad Dac. I'm still holding out hope that the Pixel XL has some really nice audio out capabilities (at least better than my Xperia Z3v or Galaxy Note 3). I prefer the quicker updates the Pixel will get, but still. My main use right now would be the 128gb model as I use my phone everyday for listening to music (as well as typical phone stuff). I refuse to carry a DAP and a phone. So basically, what do you guys think? I haven't seen anything discussing the audio capabilities.

I have heard anything in particular with respect to audio quality either.....but if your looking for headphone quality I doubt it will get better than lg v20....if you looking for speakerphone quality then you may as well save some money and get the 6p with the dual front facing speakers and still get pure Google experience and updates.
Either wait for the V20 ( slow updates, hard to root, no development...I have a v10)
Or get the Pixel and a outboard DAC/like a Opportunity HA2.
The 6P with the dual front speakers is obviously the better option for video without headphones.
The best all around solution is 6p and use viper4android to get the quality audio experience you seek plus ffs plus current Android updates
Well, I was looking for a device that had a decent DAC built in. I'm not sure what the Snapdragon 821 brings to the table. I do not subscribe to using software/DSP/EQ to make the audio sound good. I use nice headphones to listen to my music so I don't want to muck it up with software that "fakes" the sound. I don't want to add external devices (such as my Cambridge DacMagic XS or Oppo HA-2) as I'm trying to trim down to a single device.
The best sound by far will be the Htc with viper4android as it rocks I doubt you will find any smartphone that has as good of audio as the Htc 10 with viper4android.

I was thinking about the HTC 10, but Viper4Android is something I wouldn't use. It seems to just be an EQ. I don't use EQ nor do I have any interest whatsoever in doing so. It doesn't increase the quality of the audio coming out of the device.

I'm in the same boat as you. I used a HTC m8 and purchased a Nexus 6p for pure android. The Nexus DAC was terrible so I traveled with both phones. Last month i sold my 6p in anticipation of the event because of HTCs history with audio. I'm regretting that now: I'm sure if the Pixel had a dedicated DAC Google would have played it up during the event.
I'm currently researching a phone to replace my m8: It seems like best are the LG G5, v10 upcoming v20, Axon 7, and of course HTC10. The HTC10 will probably be my next phone: it sucks because it seems like you always have to compromise something.

Agreed! To be honest, I find the Xperia Z3v merely acceptable. It is a little better sounding than my Galaxy Note 3 was. I'm not even looking for something "powerful" as I have 25-32ohm headphones. Though they are quite resolving and I enjoy using them around the house and when I go out in general. If in the end, the Pixel doesn't have good sound (ie... needs to be at least 24/192), and the V20 isn't going to work for me. I'll just keep using my external DACs.
Nexus6p or V20 would work for now...

This is the same reason I am still using Nexus 6 as my daily driver, i tried many phones (Note 4, N6P, Note 5, S7 Edge, Note 7 SD820 version etc..) in the last 2 years and no phone has better audio quality thru audio jack than N6. HTC 10 has some what better audio quality but I don't want to downgrade screen size below 5.5".
It infuriates me whenever people suggest Viper/Arise etc.. to make up for the poor DAC in the phone.
Hoping pixel phone has decent DAC.
I'm going to get the V20 due to the audio quality of the Note 7 (and I'm guessing it's not great on the Pixel either). Quad DAC is going to be amazing.

If people stopped having such solid opinions on things, they'd be pleasantly surprised by what they find. At least, try using viper4android. You have no idea the difference it can make.

Funny how people criticize a phone for not having front facing speakers, but the HTC 10 doesn't have them and it is one of the best sounding phones out there right now... and yes, I have a 6P as well. I encourage everyone to save their judgement for when we actually get to hear it or someone gives a review on it.

As for the others who continue to suggest V4A or other software EQ/DSP... enlighten me on how painting a smiley face on a turd of a DAC makes it sound better? It doesn't... it simply alters the sound. I have multiple headphones that I use for different genres of music. THAT is what I use to alter the sound that I'm looking for. EQ and DSP are only meant to cover up the shortcomings of the headphones native sound signature. How would I know if I'm making things worse by polishing a Turd of a DAC by warping the sound signature? If I wanted to make things more "bassy" or "echoey" or whatever you want. I'd just pick up a pair of Beats headphones and call it a day. I'm sure it is a fantastic piece of software, again... it is completely opposite of what I'm looking for. Though, thank you for letting me know that it is out there. The 5 YouTube videos I watched let me know that it wasn't something I'd be interested in beyond a novelty.

I've used it. It helps, but it's still lipstick on a pig. The amp and DAC make a much larger difference. I liked Viper4Android on other devices but there will be no comparison to a phone with a vastly superior DAC. The HTC One M8 was by far the best audio quality I'd ever heard before because of its DAC and amp combo. Did much better than my other phones paired with V4A.

It's already known the pixel phones won't have a DAC and your interest level in pure sound quality is high and clearly outweighs the custom Roms or pure Android experience or early updates you get with Google phones...so I'm not sure what the hesitation is.... Get the phone with the DAC. Honestly the pixel phones are over priced and hardware specs are not comparable to the price.... I'll be keeping my 6p

You're right. I'll keep an eye on them, but the more I find out about it, I don't think it is the right device for me.

There is some potentially good news here, Guys. I just read the hands-on with Anandtech and while they didn't mention much about the audio quality, they did say that it has the Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec. So, yes, it's Qualcomm, but it's of much higher quality than the "normal" Qualcomm. The Aqstic is the same DAC/codec used in the HTC 10 which I find little fault with. I think the V10 is still a tad cleaner with a better noise floors, but these are extremely minor differences. For pure Google, fast updates and a nice design, I can easily settle for a Qualcomm Aqstic audio solution rather than an exotic "quad DAC" which still hasn't been released or heard by any audiophile reviewers I don't think. I'm all in for this phone.

T-Mobile has really cracked down on our ability to root our phones. I'm not sure if I'll be willing to go with a TMO LG once again simply because they have made things very difficult for us.
Next time I will go with an unlocked phone but unfortunately a lot of the unlocked phones may or may not have all the bands that T-Mobile uses. The international unlocked version of the lgv30 allegedly have the capability of using 600 megahertz but to my knowledge no one has actually succeeded in testing that alleged ability out.
The new OnePlus phones do have the 600 megahertz ability which is nice but OnePlus phones in my opinion do not offer all the bells and whistles that a Samsung Galaxy S9 or an LG v30 plus has to offer.

Well. My OnePlus 6 has all the bells and whistles I need like bottom mounted headphone jack, flat screen (not curved edges), unlocked bootloader with official TWRP, regular updates (treble support), equalizer for headphone jack (something that is a huge let down on my V30), very low amount of bloatware, stock android (mostly), notification toggle slider key, amazing battery life, immense performance, dual SIM option since I have 4 active SIM cards, 8gb RAM/128gb storage, insanely strong network connections via WiFi (490mbps) & LTE (125mbps at times) including a great connection in underground train stations, great GPS, Android 8.1 instead of buggy/laggy 8.0, and mostly everything else I use. I can't think of anything the V30 has that I need that the OnePlus 6 doesn't. Sure wireless charging, but I've used it once 7months ago for 9minutes. Dash charging is crazy fast!
It's just too bad that LG won't update the V30 & G6 with Treble support, I mean OnePlus just pushed treble support to older devices! LOL
Sucks I have to stop being an LG "fanboy" but I'm done buying carrier flagships now. But the v30 is still really good.

But no QHD display, no Qi wireless charging, no IP68 waterproofing.
I detest OnePlus almost as much as Apple because they won't give customers premium features. At least Apple finally gave users Qi wireless charging -- but OnePlus won't. Apple at least gives IP67.
I'm also not going to dump all my QuickCharge chargers for proprietary Dash chargers.
I also don't like that the often cheat at benchmarks tests.
I would buy Samsung before OnePlus, in that they have QHD display, Qi wireless charging, IP68, etc. They're a real premium phone, like LG.

Wireless charging has no use for me as I've used it for less than 10min of my entire life.
And larger than 1080p doesn't matter on a screen less than 62 inches.
All OEMs cheat on benchmark, they just push to max settings. No biggie.
My V30 charger chsrges my OP6 faster than it charges my V30. You don't NEED to use dash charger at all, people that say and think so are idiots and you shouldn't listen to them! Yes dash is faster in comparison but quick charge works just fine.

Returned my op6 to keep v30.
V30 screen is better and supports daydream
Size is better for me op6 is a hair to big.
Prefer no notch
Vibrate motor is the op6 is Mickey mouse
LTE radio is the same as sd845 in v30
I think the v30 camera is better and op6 has two cameras but no wide angle which makes no sense
Op is making strides but they're not there yet. When I returned the device I told them I'd pay $200 more for $200 more phone.
I'm thinking that in October pixel 3 will be the phone to beat. If not, I'll wait till 2019 with v30

I didn't get a chance to, no. I used it as a daily with root for about a week and a half. Received my v30 during that time (for $325) and it was a no brainier deciding which one to keep for me.
Bought a 6 which arrives tomorrow so I'll put it thru it's paces. I do like my V30 but I also love root and flashing ROMs and the fact that my T-Mobile V30 is still locked down with no solution for it in the near future is frustrating.

Many good points raised here. I really like my v30 plus. Even tho it's stock, it's the best phone I've had thus far.
Time will tell what's next.
I'd like to sample an OP6 but they aren't found in local stores. It's almost a leap of faith if you don't know anyone that owns one, where you can actually experience it.

Agreed the vibration is way too intense on the OP6. I hate it, but lowered it with the kernel I use.
V30 has great camera. OP6 has a significantly better camera than the G7, but I've only spent about a week with the G7 so far.
I use my v30 for daydream also, since it came with the daydream viewer.
The, "notch" actually no longer bothers me since I don't form opinions based on the bandwagon internet haters of it. At this point I kinda like it. Before having the OP6 I was one of the idiotic masses who viewed it as a piece of the bezel overlapping the screen, when in reality it's the complete opposite. Theres actually 2 parts of the screen overlapping the bezel. Basically making the speaker, LED, & Camera part of the status bar, so basically the status bar s part of the bezel, giving more screen availability to the user.
But to each their own.
I'm just finished with companies that void warranty for unlocking the Bootloader or rooting and lock me out of having root.

I know you're not asking me. But i have both phones in my hand as i type this.
V30 sounds good, very clear. However, the top mounted headphone jack ruins.the entire usage of headphones while mobile.
Another thing about the v30 is that for some stupid reason, they decided to not include an equalizer for the headphone jack (DAC) Which I believe the V10, V20, & G7 do include.
I'm a bass head and NEED the heavy bass in my headphones.
For this, and this is my preference, the OP6 definitely has better sound in earbuds due to the equalizer.
Plus, the OnePlus headphones are 24ohm impedance which make them sound great in the v30 also.
Whereas the LG/B&O earbuds are complete garbage especially for $150.
For earbuds, OnePlus 6 wins.
For driven speakers and extrenal powered sound systems, the V30 kills it due to the immense clarity of the DAC.
The OP6 may not be B&O tuned but surely does have a great quality sound driver!

I used to feel strongly about having the ability to root, but in recent years it's become less important to me. Possibly because I moved away from bloated Samsung phones (S6 was last) and I discovered Package Disabler app (for Samsung and LG phones). I'm grateful T-Mobile phones have less bloat than Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T versions. Unfortunately T-Mobile phones are usually the last to receive major OS updates.
In regards to the OP6, no wireless charging, no waterproof, and no wide-angle camera are deal breakers for me.
Well after playing with the OP6 the last few days looks like I'm selling my V30. I do see where both phones have their pros and cons but overall I like the 6. The only gripe I had when I first got the phone was the slight difference in the resolution on the display and the sound when listening to music thru my earbuds. But after tweaking the eq to my liking it sounds great. I don't even notice the display anymore since the difference is so minimal. The major plus for me is the huge dev community behind the 6 and looking forward to all tweaks and improvements that go along with that.
