[Q] Root & non At&t ROM for At&t Note 4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Hello,
I am new to Samsung and have a question.
Previously I have been an HTC user, and was able to restore a Developer version (HTC ONE) ROM to a At&t (HTC One) through TWRP.
So is it possible to flash a non At&t STOCK ROM to my At&t Note 4?
And also how would I go about rooting manually. CF-autoroot not available for the At&t version.
Thanks..

@nasvi - you've posted a question in the development section - this is strictly forbidden. The Development section has rules about what can be posted here & the "original development" section is especially sacred in what is allowed...basically, if you didn't "create it," it doesn't belong in development and if you didn't "create it from scratch," it doesn't belong in original development.
I've moved your question to the Q&A section where it should have been posted originally. Please familiarize yourself with the rules link in my signature and adhere to those in the future to avoid future moderator interaction.
Thanks.

@nasvi At this time there is no root or ability to flash anything other than AT&T roms.

Do you think something will be available in about 2 weeks.
I am thinking about returning/Selling the Note 4 since no root is available, and buying a One Plus One.
I refuse to use a device with all the crap Att has put on it (Bloatware, Spyware).
Oh well... if noting come up between now and my return date, I will say goodnye to sammy.
Thank you...

I think you should have researched your purchase a little more of this is such a big issue for you. There will be root but you have to give it time.

Ya, I second that. Should have searched first. ATT = locked bootloader which means no easy root like T-mobile. Note 3 people with Kitkat had to wait 6 months for root. It was a similar wait for the S5. That exploit has been patched so it doesn't work on the Note 3 or Note 4. Expect to wait about 6 months for root.
Meanwhile, a dream team of the devs have moved to the T-mobile Note 4 which is compatible with ATT's network.

you didnt know this before buying the device?

No.. I did not..
I was assuming it would be as simple as HTC.
I got my HTC One the first day and within hours had bootloader unlocked and custom recovery installed, nandroid backup done, other non-Att stock ROM installed ( Developer Edition ). But I also had other options like ( Google Play Edition ). Downloaded Straight from official HTCDEV website.
I like the new Note 4 a lot.
But this is BS....

In addition to all the BS... att has removed Download Booster and internet calling options from settings. So I cant register a SIP account on my Note 4... This is just plain stupid...
What the Hell ATT???

Dude, I think from all of your posts that we understand you have a t-mobile Note 4 by now. It seems that you mention it in every post.
Not everyone is able to get a t-mobile Note 4 to use on the AT&T network for various reasons. I'm not saying you're asking him to in this particular response, but your song and dance is getting a little old.

Ya, I agree I do feel like I'm beating a dead horse at times but people keep asking the same things. I'm just trying to help and give them the best options they have. Some have unrealistic expectations that root will be here in a week or a month and don't realize what has happened with previous Samsung phones. I saw the complaints, disappointment and $1000's of dollars in bounties in the note 3 and s5 forums and thought I would try and help as early as I could this time. I do feel like it's helped a great deal of people that would have made a mistake otherwise getting an ATT Note 4. Especially when it's so easy to avoid all the problems and have a great phone.
To me it's like buying a car from a dealer that puts a governor stuck at 45mph when you can go to the dealer across the street that lets you use it to the full potential.
I realize some people can't and that's fine. Feel free to ignore me. Thanks!

the problem is that if you want to buy it from the dealer across the street, you'll have to shell out $8xx, which most people cannot do. So they're forced to get the governed 45 mph device instead and hope that someone can help remove it.

I am curious as to whether anyone has even heard about a dev working on root for our AT&T variant. I keep seeing people say that there will be root "at some point" but I am not sure about that. It seems to me that the devs have simply given up on this one. I don't blame them either, I mean why bother with trying to get around locked bootloaders when you can simply move on to another device? I know that there must be someone out there trying if for no other reason than to take on the challenge but if so no one is talking about it.

Ya, I've been in a similar situation before. One thing I did that may help is to sell it on Ebay (swappa is an option too) and then use the money to get the other device. That way you are out very little money.

No worries bro, I'm sorry if my post was too rude. I was just thinking if people are on xda and know a little about root, they either knew what they were getting into buying the AT&T version or they had to buy it for whatever reason.
But I also understand that a lot of people on xda don't know these things sometimes. No harm bro, good luck with this beautiful device!

I'm sure there is a dev out there who would love to conquer what other devs see ass "too much work" I mean it's honestly a good payout. Helps ALOT of people who finally get what they desire out of a device they shelled out alot for....instead of paying a lot for a disappointment a dev out there can solve all of that they can stick it to AT&T for f&#**!& it up for all of us...there is one somewhere...we should all beg hashcode to develop a safestrap for us at least like we had on the note 3....

I bet by the end of this week. Root will be easy, bootloader will not be broken though. I just want my Titanium Backup and Root Explorer so root is all need.
I called a few att stores in my area and each of them said they have them in stock, but cannot sell them... How'd you pull this off?

I just walked in and asked? Ha. And would we not be able to flash custom ROMS? I need my CM11!
You'll never have CM11 on it. Never. But you can use exposed and do other mods. Just no ROMS.
Wow. I guess a lot of things have changed since my old S3.

I was surprised when it happened because samsung phones were always so open. Nexus 6 looks good but it's just a big phone with no feature that I know of at least to take advantage if that screen. At least they finally went above 32gb now. But I don't think I'll ever buy an AT&T phone ever again.
I did the same. Walked into an AT&T near me during lunch and got a white Note 4. I wasn't expecting to be able to get one but they are selling them here in Milwaukee.
Much like some of you here, I don't need anything more than root to run titanium and a couple other things. I never understood the idea of getting a note device to throw an AOSP rom on it that negates the S Pen functionality and other Note qualities. Why not just get any other big phone?

Why do you say that? Root and bootloader are two completely different things.
Root should be easy and we should get it. Custom recovery on the other hand, probably not.
I'm in Pa and just called my local store, they have them in as well and the guy said I can come get one now. I'M on my way to pick up note 4 also. I'm with u guys just want root for titanium backup and xposed , I really don't flash roms to often anymore.

Correct me if I'm wrong but these custom ROMS don't support the S Pen. If that is true, what use is the ROMS if you can't use the S Pen. That is one major point of the whole note.

The S Pen was never a real selling point for me. HTCs have bad cameras, LGs have have horrible reliability from mine/my buddies experience with the G2 and the Note is still the spec king. I could definitely get behind a Nexus though.

Which store did you go to? I tried at the Greenfield store on 76th and Layton but they said they will start selling it on the 17th.
I don't mind touchwiz myself and if you haven't played with a note 4 in store you might be pretty happy with touchwiz this time around, its snappy and actually doesn't look nearly as bad as it used to. Can just install nova or google now launcher if it is that bothersome though from a UI perspective. Setting wise I think Samsung offers more a better features than aosp.

I got the Note 4 in Pasadena, they had 5 white and 2 black. They are technically not suppose to sell them until Friday, but all the corp stores got them. It took a bit of effort to get them to admit they had them, and I pulled the corporate partner card on them so they went ahead with it.
Now what sucks is I can't transfer any of my data with titanium backup, I am wondering when root will be available.
I also agree with others here, if you don't need or care for the S-Pen the Nexus 6 is probably the device you want...
So who will be first to release a root?
Hopefully we can get root for now... Maybe we should check out the G3 forum as they got root with the bootloader locked...

Got mine from a store in Austin today. Just walked in and they said they'd sell it.

Sad panda here :(

This is horrible not having root this long. It's a completely new and raw feeling. Every android phone I've ever had had got root the same day I picked it up. The og DROID was a development veteran. The Droid X, eh.. The galaxy nexus speaks for itself. The note 2 had great development as did my note 3. Then I pick up a AT&T note 4 thinking I had nothing to worry about as this is my first AT&T phone. A month later and even though this phone is awesome, its horrible not having root. I don't blame anyone but AT&T. What's a**holes. I LONG for Viper Audio & Xposed...
I feel your pain...which is exactly why I'm chomping at the bit for my Nexus 6 to arrive . I'll probably carry them both, as I think the camera is better in the Note 4..........but I want my Xposed! I gotta save those snapchats! LOL

Hard to believe you didn't do your research.. AT&T has been requesting locked bootloaders from the OEMs since before the Note 3.
Sad to say this phone will probably not get cracked before Lollipop gets pushed down. After that, thenodds are probably even more unlikely. I don't think, (even though there is a long list of folks donating), that we have actually gotten confirmation that any devs are working on an exploit for this one.
If you just must have root, you'd be better off using the T-Mobile variant.

The fact is that AT&T and Verizon want non rootable phones. Period. And that isn't likely to change.
People that 'need' root need to make 100% sure a phone is rooted before they buy it. It is going to be more and more unlikely that phones with locked boot loaders will be rooted.
If you buy a phone that doesn't have root, then don't complain.

Honestly I can't believe I didn't do the research either. I should have known better smh. might have been a little to excited to snatch one up on my own line. But I'll definitely be selling it for a SM-N910T as soon as I can. What the f*ck AT&T.
Meh. You should have known before you bought it.
I am having a hard time believing all of this as well. I'm actually putting off my upgrade because of it. Sitting here with my year-old Note 3 that I rooted 2 hours after I bought it, kinda thinking about going another direction, I just really like my current plan

How long did it take for the ATT note 3 to get rooted?
Blame Samsung
The bottom line is SAMSUNG makes the phone, not ATT. They should stop being a bunch of ******* and just say our phone comes with an unlocked bootloader. PERIOD. What are they going to do? Not carry the hottest device out there? I doubt it
I might be in the minority but to me, for the first time ever since I started using Android, I don't feel like root is necessary. Sure, it would be nice to have Xposed and TiBu, but I seem to manage fine with this phone.

And what business reason is there for Samsung to do that? As long as people are buying the phones, they won't bother.
If sales falter (people buying tmobile instead of the att version doesn't count) and people are vocal on why, then something may change... But I doubt it.

Amen... just upgraded to Note 4 from Note 2, two weeks after my AT&T contract expired and got a note from AT&T that I could now unlock my phone... whoops for them, a bit too late. Patiently waiting for these phone manufacturers to stop bending over for the carriers and start insisting on unlocked devices right out of the factory.

If you have chosen to buy an AT&T/Verizon phone then you're gonna have to live with it, buddy. That's why I kept my N3 and didn't rush for the N4. That's what I've always done. Once a phone (from those two carriers) comes out, I'd just wait and watch for a couple of months if it gets rooted. If not then sell the old one and add a little bit of money and buy me an unlocked one.
From my Allianced S5!
If you want root figure a way to do it yourself, otherwise just wait patiently.
I got over not having root after maybe 5 or 6 days. Ads suck but the Note performs better than my old rooted phone, and the camera is epic, I can live without root...

1. Locked bootloader (so no custom recovery for flashing ROMS, unless we get Safestrap)
2. No Root (no root, then no Safestrap)
Verizon is the same way with the normal consumer edition. The only reason they have ROMs is for the Developer Edition version that Verizon has.

No. Our device is not on that list. We have the N910A version (AT&T obviously).
AutoRoot List
Also, even with root on the ATT version, Safestrap may not work because of SELinux. It may take additional months of development time to figure out a new hook (if it's been fixed) to install the safestrap hijack. SELinux has to be set to permissive for safestrap no matter what and I don't know if that's possible with root on the note 4 with a locked bootloader. Lot's of questions still to be answered.

I don't want or need a t-mobile device to use with my AT&T coverage, if I did I'd get t-mobile coverage and drop my AT&T plan, nor am I willing to spend $600-700 on a PHONE. I'm with the majority if people here, we have the coverage we have for whatever reasons, and I'm not going to switch or buy a PHONE outright for root. It's normal to pay nothing down for a phone or $200-300, not buy models from random strangers for $600 dollars. I'm not on here talking about root or begging for it, demanding it, and I'm sure as heck not on here just popping through each thread with negativity and unwanted condescending remarks. Maybe go to the T-mobile forums and put people and ideas down for fun over there?

Then what are you doing in a ROM Thread? Wishful thinking? No reason to put T mobile users down They have unlocked boot loader phones on a carrier they love...WIN WIN>
Just educating you. First of all there will be NO root for the ATT Note 4. Deal with it. T mobile coverage is not as good as ATT coverage here, Have to buy an open phone to gain full benefit of the device.
The days of subsidized phones are ALREADY gone, You are paying up to $300 a year in HIGHER rates for subsidized phones, than those purchased. The NEXT program is a joke. $825 plus tax for a locked down Phone? Not a chance...
In fact the way things are set up its more expensive to buy a subsidized phone, You will pay $900+ for a $700 phone. They will get it now or later, Either way you will be paying all the money for a device and more in service fees if you buy subsidized......... That device at those prices may as well be unlocked and allow you to do with it what you want.
Unless you are into fraud. Rooting a phone eliminates warranty. Once you root a device you are on your own. Random strangers have never sold me or anyone i know a bad device. Checks and balances are in place to keep that from happening whether PayPal or Swappa who insists they run the ESN to make sure it's clear.
There is zero risk in buying used devices. Been doing it for years with my phones, No contracts. Lowest rates and less expensive phones.

Don't kill other people's hopes for root just because you *think* there's not gonna be root. If you're right about it, then great, if not, then you're being negative for nothing

I KNOW there won't be root. Been doing this for 5 years. Know developers. They have too many WORKING UNLOCKED devices to spend their time on. You won't see root for the ATT phone. Just trying to educate.
Petitions and a few thousand of "pledges" (rarely fully collected) are not going to make a difference. If I thought there would be root I would have bought the ATT Variant and waited. Look at the Note 4 development threads. How many does ATT have? 1? 2? Note 4 has been on the street
two months and there is ONE thread in the development section. There's your sign.
Hey I would love to see a developer prove me wrong but they are too busy working on phones and collecting donations from people who have devices that can handle their work. Screw AT&T

5 years of preaching and caps?
I doubt there's going to be root for this device either, many people don't. You don't see any of them bashing on others who hope for root. Tell people things they don't wanna hear and they'll ignore you, do it constantly and they'll hate you.
If you're in here to put people down, then why be here?
Keep the thread clean

I don't care who "ignores me" LOL But when some one starts a thread title "No Roms Yet? when the development section has O N E thread...I have to laugh first then educate. Look at the T Mobile Development threads. There is his answer....and his ROMS
Keeping the thread clean means educating the OP. No ROMS yet? Ummm No....and the device has been on the street two months and not even a hint of a custom recovery or root. Sometimes it does not pay to be an early adopter. Know what yee are buying and the capabilities for $800.....Thats a pretty good idea
So, what part of educating involves laughter? You've been through nearly every thread involving root in this forum spewing about how great it is that YOU got an unlcoekd TMO N4. Nothing about what you have done or said has contributed in any manner. It's just you acting tough and thrilled behind a keyboard. Nothing more.
At the end of the day, you got what made you happy. Stop being someone with no worth to bring and just enjoy your device. Someone presents a question, just answer it straight out. No need to mock or toss your "superiority" into anyone's face. Whether root happens or not, the device will work as is.
No one is telling you how to spend your money, so why go around telling people how to spend theirs. Like I said, enjoy what you have. Let others do the same. You got a TMO N4, go to the TMO thread and be an ass there.

No Roms yet? Yeah Thats funny considering the phone has been out over two months and the development section has ONE thread. I have never seen a device out this long without any development action,. I know some developers who are just saying no to ATT. Not worth it
If one person reads my rants and saves $800 buying a locked up device and instead buys the T Mobile version I will feel vindicated. IF they don;t want root and want to keep their warranty intact they have the right device.

Demanding: Telling others how to spend their money
Argumentative: Arguing with those whom don't have the same opinion
Disrespectful: Laughing at others whom want progress with the AT&T thred
Self-righteous Manner: Repeatedly telling others that you bought a T-mobile Note 4 and claiming that it's the best thing ever

Possible root fix??? Can anyone verify the legitimacy??

The AT&T Note 4 Edge shows up on here...can't be MUCH different than our Note 4, right?
THEN, looking at supported models, I found this....
Not knowing anything, this seems to be close to what we need, right? Just offering up my two cents.
I'm assuming it's a crap-shoot. A release this big for the 2 carriers wouldn't go unannounced as someone will be likely to step up and claim the bounty.
At this point, I've given up on root and have just learned to like my stock Note 4

DANG IT. If that's the case, my apologies. I'm REALLY hating the locked down feeling, especially since we can't write to sd. That and volume hacks are the only REAL gripes I have with being locked down. I regret giving my buddy my rooted Note 3 at this point, the Nexus 6 only comes with 32 GB and no external sd. Should I hold on to my 4, go back to the 3, or try the Nexus 6, then?
I held on to my s4 mdl thank God though my wife was up my rear to sell it. If root don't ever come up for this note 4 I will, never upgrade again and stay with my s4.

Have a great day! from my LG G3
Not too sure why it'd be removed by a mod considering how the Edge isn't even listed for any kind of serial number repair. A factory unlock doesn't even touch the ESN/IMEI; only the locks by altering them with the AT command DETALOCK over UART after sending the MSL and AKSEEDNO challenge.
I bet the software uses some kind of auto-root. I doubt the Edge is supported for root, must be a mistype.
I would be curious if anyone is willing to try these. Sure it's a longshot but maybe one of them works?
I tried it, doesn't root, but does unlock. Cost money though, makes no difference because your paying for an unlock code no matter what. For a moment I was hopeful it would root but didn't work. AT&T Note 4

Galaxy Note 5 Root Progress

Highly unlikely there will be a root for the AT&T version but lets see... Post any "root" progress or discussion here...
This post should be titled Pigs Flying Progress.
Not to be rude, but we can come back to this thread a year from now on a non-rooted AT&T Note 5.
Why?
Because it's locked hard core. Most people will just buy a non att version and unlock it. Sucks for the few that didn't want to pay $1200 for the phone. I just want root to remove crap and a custom kernel no rooms for me.
Any idea who said it is locked hardcore? Did somebody actually try?
I tried it today. I used pumpkin, apple, sunflower, even tomato seeds. No roots yet.

It's Knox locked for now tell someone cracks it or a unlocked bootloader is leaked.

That article is rubbish. I believe there simply aren't any good hackers working on this project. Autoprime has always rooted lots of impossible devices, but unfortunately there isn't any interest on this one. Those that are interested have no knowledge, therefore cut it short and just say that root is impossible.
Just know that in the future if you want a rooted device don't go through AT&T, I think that's been pretty clear for awhile now.

I would like to share in your optimism, but you likely never owned the AT&T note 4...still waiting on a root there a year in.

I owned but my theory is different. I believe that we can't achieve root because there aren't any more great developers working on the att note series. Number of developers kept decreasing every year. Most of the good ones grew up, found real jobs, have family and stuff and no free time to mess with the phones. Note 1 and note 2 had great developers then Note 3 was slow then Note 4 had 0 developers and same situation with Note 5. So at this point there only are themers left out there but no real developers. Anyways even if there was root on this device I doubt I would root it. First time I am very happy with stock rom experience on an android phone.

I'm actually fine with not rooting either the note 4 or note 5, they are both very fast after some light tweaking. The argument that there isn't enough developers is fair, but I believe there isn't more development because these phones are very hard to crack. You can hack a temporary root for the note 4, but I doubt that will be possible with the note 5. Either way these are superior phones to those a few years ago which were barely useable without root.
I'm not feeling the need to root this phone. My wife has my LG G3 (T-Mobile variant on AT&T). That was my phone prior to the Note 5. It was plenty quick on AOSP (not very quick on a stock-like ROM). Playing with it after using the Note 5 and it surprises me the LG feels slow. The Note 5 is plenty of snappy.
My only gripe...no Titanium Backup and no Ad Blocker. I've got Firefox as the browser and an ad blocker plugin for that but for the other apps I don't have any luck. I know there's AdGuard but don't feel like using that one.

Disabling apps with package disabler pro, turning off unneeded sensor stuff, and things like hd voice (since it's not in my area anyways).
