Well, initially I received my phone and was so happy about the premium feel of the metal band surrounding the sides of the phone. Today I'm carefully looking at the quality and noticed that if you look inside any of the ports it appears the " metal" stops immediately after the surface and a hard, almost ceramic looking material is underneath. Anybody else notice this? Maybe they got really good at their "metallic finishes and found a very hard machinable plastic, because the more I look at that chamfored edge, the more it looks like chrome paint.
The whole phone itself is not made out of aluminum. There is a mix of other metals(magnesium) and plastics, along with an aluminum band around it. Also, aluminum itself is not shiny like the chamfered edge, and only shows as being shiny/mirror-like finish due to the machine cut.

I would like to belive that but working in a machine shop I know what metal is. Unfortunately it's quite apparent that it's painted plastic if you look at the bottom of the phone where the sPen goes in. they smoothed the edge out and rubbed the paint off showing white plastic underneath. If there is metal there it's a paper this sheet of it. I'm afraid they have once again fauxed it up again. I do think it is a vastly improved look but still plastic.

Alright, here's the facts since you don't believe what I said:
The note 4 consists of 2 chassis-
-The first chassis is made of an aluminum-magnesium allow called magnalium(which also includes small traces of tin/copper/ nickel) and is used to mount the processors and other heat conducting hardware.
-The second chassis consists of plastic and has an aluminum band around the perimeter(the one you see from the exterior). This plastic chassis is mostly used as a scaffolding to hold any extra hardware/accessories(Spen) that do not conduct heat.
The magnalium gives it strength.
The plastic keeps it light.
The aluminum gives it looks.
I can't ask for a better combination.

I do agree it should hold up nice but if there is aluminum there it's just a thin foil sticker over the plastic frame. I assume you don't have one to see for your self. If you do, just look in the ports and you'll see the white plastic.

Lord I really wanted to come here and flame you as a hater... but I actually did look at the phone and your sorta right. The metal band on the outside is really thin (at least at the ports). BUT I don't care much and I don't think it is a screw up on the part of Samsung, I think it is a over statement on the part of the reviewers.
There is a metal structure inside the phone. It is significant compared to prior all plastic phones. It provides strength and rigidity as pointed out by the other poster. The aluminum band on the outside is clearly only decorative. However, I don't recall Samsung saying anywhere that the band on the outside was the only metal on the phone? Kinda reminds me of the wood panels on old station wagons.
I like the look, and its a very solid feeling device. So no matter how you break it down, its not an all plastic phone, and it is made of metal... including metal highlights on the finish.

I don't doubt the chassis inside the phone is metal and as far as durability goes it definitely won't bend easily, but I just wish they would give up the simulation of materials. I mean they went as far as to simulate the breaks in the metal band like an iPhone. Other than that it is one beast of a phone that I will be able to live with just fine. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one to notice it.

I have read that the gaps in the metal are not a copy of the iPhone, they are there so that the metal band doesn't interfere with the radio signals.... Sounded fishy to me, but I am skilled at little and and expert of none, so who am I to judge.

You mean a massive electronics giant such as Samsung wouldn't have an overpaid marketing division that just might embellish on the truth a bit. I got it guys. We'll just call it a "premium metal frame" brilliant! Like I said, it's a fantastic phone but the outermost bezel is in no way anything more than aluminum foil and paint.

Premium is an opinion word and not verifiable either way.. and yes, it DOES have a metal frame. Have you ever seen the phone?!?!? The metal band around the outside might be what they consider the frame... and its there. The significant metal framework might be the frame they are talking about (and I bet it is) and its definitely there. What is this conversation even about?!?! There is metal in and around the phone. Just like they said. If you want more, then go get yourself the aluminium pop can called the iPhone and be happy, then go bend it in half in your pocket. Personally, this phone is rock solid compared to my Note 2.
You know what... I definitely see what the OP is talking about. The metal sides look to be about as thin as a piece of paper. Not that I really care that much... I'm putting a plastic case on it anyways but it's an interesting observation

Sadly enough it's true, and a bit disappointing as well. If you look really closely what appears to be antenna breaks are just where they interrupted the faux machine cut which now just looks to be a metalized paint job to make it look like that. This is specially noticeable around where the S Pen enters the phone. Still love my phone but why does Samsung try to fools us like this and then sell it like it is a premium metal! Should of told everyone it is metalized plastic frame!

I own it . Given the choice between chrome-look ripply plastic made to poorly resemble a book edge (Note 3) and a beveled partial metal bezel with not even the slightest of gaps where metal and plastic meet (Note 4) I choose the latter. Option 3, the one people here are looking for, seems to be a 100% polished metal bezel. Unless I missed a meeting that option's not available. Whatever the definition of "premium," the Note 4's a hell of a lot closer than the Samsung phones that preceded it (except the Alpha which uses the same design). I'm a glass half full kind of guy. I celebrate what I have rather than lament what I don't. To each their own.

I don't disagree with anything you said, and know exactly what you're talking about because I've seen what you're saying on a display model(mine should be here on monday). But, I believe it looks like that because of a miix of how the the frame is attached to the plastic, and the quality of paint used on the trim and plastic. Have you noticed what appears to be a small patch underneath the paint where the white line of plastic joins the aluminum sections around the band? Each section has a patch from every Note 4 I looked at. I love the note 4, but I've already spotted many quality issues with it. If I wanted a top-notch quality phone, build-wise, I would look at the iPhone, but in the grand scheme of things, the Note 4 is perfect for me regardless of its build quality flaws. Anyways, speaking of thin aluminum...the iPhone 6!

Ya I see that raised section between the bars as well. After looking much closer it looks like some sections of the frame may be in fact aluminum. Possibly they used a similar method to mold plastic with aluminum as HTC did with the ONE M7 and then painted over everything to make it look like one piece. I guess we won't know until someone really dissects this thing. In the mean time I'm really enjoying this beast from the fantastic camera to the amazing screen quality.

The aluminum bumper from capdae looks nice. I like the black/gold especially, or maybe the all silver color. Has anyone tried it yet? I want to know how rigid it is, if it really is aluminum, and whether it is smooth and cool to the touch. Also wanted to know if the break where the two pieces snap together can be easily felt, and if the finish is good and smooth with no sharp or rough places. I've bought cheap snap-on hard cases and the break where they snap on was always rough and unpleasant.

I have one, it's pretty good! The frame itself is definitely aluminium (checked for solidity and sonorous...ity and confirm it's metal) Takes a little effort to snap it together, but once in place it's extremely solid with no flex whatsoever. The frame is also slightly raised at the back in each corner so the camera lens does not touch the "surface" when you put it down (something that was crucial to me and not clear from the pictures)
The only slight downside is that the metal is quite smooth so it's a little slippery compared to my previous leather case (unsurprising!) and the brushed effect is only average, would have preferred a "matte" effect but that's only a minor gripe.
As for sharp edges, the only edges I really notice are around the stylus gap but even these aren't particularly sharp, just 90° cuts.
This frame is definitely not going anywhere without the opening tool, that's for sure!
Why do people put these bumpers on their phones...I mean on a phone like the iPhone or S2 where it's small, I'd get it...but on a large phone like the Note....I just find it so fugly.

What kind of aluminum is it and how does it feel? Say in comparison to the iPad (abit rough but nice), iPad2/3 (a bit too smooth and not as rigid as first ipad), iPhone (stainless steel-ish), samsung phones like the s8500 wave and omnia 7 (brushed and too rough, not very rigid). I guess any household item or gadget to describe it would be nice. Would like to also know how much of a surface area increase does it provide over just the bare chrome trim, and whether it is easier and more comfortable to hold with it on. Holding it comfortably and securely is my main focus. Oh, also wanted to know whether there is any soft material in the inside, especially where it touches the front glass, to protect the phone from getting scratched by the frame.

The only soft inside is on the back section in the four corners. The phone does not move around at all so there is no risk of scratching, which is also coupled with the fact that aluminium physically cannot scratch Gorilla Glass - in fact your screen will scratch the aluminium!
As for holding it, there is a certain degree of personal opinion involved. Some people would find the ridge on the back surface (the cutout of the frame where it meets the battery cover) uncomfortable, however I really like it because it provided a gripping point for your fingers when holding one handed a bit like the finger ridges on some digital cameras.
Size-wise, it only adds ~2mm on each side so not much of a difference.
The finish is brushed aluminium, so cannot be compared to any iDevice because they are all matte/sandblasted. The finish reminds me of the brushed aluminium of the Hyper Osiris PC case (mainly because I had one of these myself for a while) If you do a Google Images search and filter for large images you'll get a good view of the finish style. One thing for sure, it definitely does not flex when pushed anywhere!
capdase usually has good, reliable and cheaper cases for those on a budget i think in some you get a free screen gaurd too which is like killing two birds with one stone

Forgot to mention that bit, my Duo Frame came with a screen protector as well. Not applied it yet though!
Hey Guys and Girls,
I just got my Galaxy S III a month ago and I am developing a problem I can't seem to figure out. On the edges of the phone, where the glass meets the blue plastic I am getting a build up of dirt. I keep my hands very clean as I am super OCD about my devices. With that being said, I am getting dirt and "grime" build up in the sides. Sometimes it's hard to notice but it becomes clearer as more days go on. I have contacted Samsung and they were unwilling to decide what it was without seeing it. I contacted my carrier who sent me a replacement after ten or more calls. The new device seems to suffer the same fate. I am wondering if anyone else is having this problem or knows how to get rid of it. I tried to clean it with an air canister with no luck and plenty of sharp objects. None which would do a great job, the only thing that came close was a toothbrush and that was difficult to say the least. Is this a known problem or am I getting more defective devices. Thanks for your input.
P.S- I know the photo isn't great and I will take more to show the effects. It is most noticeable in the corners, the sides, and around the speaker and home button.

I had some lint build up in mine before I got a case (free zoogue deal) that covers the gap. I just used the corner of a folded piece of paper to clean it out a few times. Personally, I consider that gap to be a design flaw, particularly considering that the gap is not uniform on all sides...

I will try the paper trick, pretty much the only thing I didn't use. I find the gap to be a flaw as well considering that over time it is only bound to get worse. I have found that some spots are wider than others. Not sure why they would create a design like this but glad to see I am not the only one. I thought I was being OCD for awhile.

The gap isn't a design flaw: it's actually the seam between the front and back of the phone, and it's where you slip a spudger (flat plastic knife) in order to pry it apart (after rear screws are removed) for repair.
Just put a case on it -- any case will do -- and then it's virtually a non-issue. If you don't want to use case then just live with having to clean out the gunk build-up every couple months.
(And, frankly, it's kinda lame that you *****ed about this "problem" over 10 phonecalls and then they finally gave you a replacement phone to make you go away and stop costing them money)
Before I had a case I didn't have this issue. The gap isn't very noticeable. I have a Diztronic TPU case now ($10 Amazon) and it has a small lip which covers that gap. Maybe you have dirty pockets or a batch of phones that just had a slightly larger gap.

You are entitled to your opinion about how lame or not lame it was for me to call, but the truth of the matter is I have owned a multitude of phones in my lifetime, none which had a problem like this at all. I am not sure if you are in Canada, but a three year term for a phone that constantly needs maintenance for removing dust does not seem like a premium device in my book. Not to mention the fact that if it finds it's way under the screen as you suggest, then it would only cause future problems, outside of the one year warranty, rendering me with an inoperable phone. So I can't say I agree with your analysis of my calls. Not to mention it costs them a negligible amount to speak with me on the phone.
Most of the cases I have found only cover the rear of the device and do not cover the lip. I would hate to cover up my super phone in a five dollar POS case just for the sake of keeping dust out of a device that should have been designed to not have that happen to begin with.

It can't get behind the screen because it's one piece, so don't worry about that.

Yeah, many of the hard polycarb cases -- like Samsung's mesh case, or the popular Rock Quicksand -- that offer little edge protection don't cover the the entire lip because they can't. All TPU and hybrid cases do, though.

Most TPU cases have a lip which wraps around the front. It's not a hard plastic case that tries to snap into place. I have the Diztronic case and the lip is definitely there and it definitely covers the gap you're referring to. I had a TPU case for my GSII and it's the same basic design. If you don't want a case then you'll have to put up with the dirt in the crevices or get a different phone.

I use this case. http://www.amazon.com/Diztronic-Fle...54&sr=8-7&keywords=diztronic+galaxy+s+III+tpu The matte feel is nice and it comes with a screen protector which I applied and it's good quality as well. It doesn't attract as much finger prints as other screen protectors I've used and it's very clear.
Off Topic:
But... even with a TPU case you'll have to be careful of drops. Gorilla Glass isn't as strong as it's touted to be against sudden impacts (watch iPhone5 vs Samsung Galaxy S III drop test). My GSII got a small scratch prior to applying a protector and just today a coworker dropped her GSII on concrete and the TPU case didn't stop the screen from severely cracking. It will protect from a lot of surface scratches though. My mom just got her first smart phone (a Pantech) and dropped it and it slid across the floor. I hadn't gotten her screen protector yet and her screen has some small scratches and nicks.
I guess my point is even if it reduces the aesthetics get a case, a screen protector, and be careful still.
I ordered that case like you suggested but it has yet to arrive. The replacement phone I got from my carrier is having even worse problems than my first one. I was even more careful with this than the others. Not really sure what to do. I am intrigued by the fact that I see nobody who has a white GS3 post problems about it. I wonder if the blue is the only one with these kind of issues.

I had a blue one and had the same problem. The dust was noticeable around the edge and around the speaker. I ended up exchanging it because the home button died. All they had in stock was white so I took it. I have to say, the white one has much less of a seam and there is no noticeable dust build up!

Going to see if I can get a white. I prefer blue but I hate this problem.
Mine collects dust too and I use a Rock case. I'd clean it if I could, but I can't seem to fit paper or anything in to push it out either. It's hardly visible, not putting too much thought in to it.
Are there any case haterz on this forum, who run their phones without any kind of cases / back stickers etc ?

I have been using case since day one, but i just can't stand it anymore. Did I buy alluminium phone to put it in rubber case or stick plastic sheet of foil on it to lose the feeling of alluminium ? No !
I drop my phone very rarely, actually i have never droppped it (knock knock), only time it hit ground it was clumsy bird's (jokin clumsy friend's hands) fault. My only concern is lens protector. On one side its nicely hidden in the rim, but at the other lens cover is protruding just a very litle bit. I am attaching picture to illustrate it a bit. It is side look.
There's a "hole" in the phone body, so the lens should be all hidden / drown and there should be 1 milimeter gap, when i place phone on table. On one side there is, on other lens is in line with body.
Grey - phone
White - gap for lens cover
Black - lens cover
Mods, please do not delete this topic - this has already happened in past (moved to accesories thread), but it get lost very easily, i try to debate with users without accesories.

i did for apprx 4 months when i first bought the device, now i'm using crystal clear case to not to hide devices body.
i bought a case after i saw scratches on camera lens, luckly camera lens got replaced after service for red tint.
also shiny exposed alumium around the device got scratched and deformed a bit.
I also am not a fan of big bulky cases. One of the main reasons I bought this phone is because it is so damn beautiful (compared to most other phones). I've always joked about how iPhone fans typically rave about how "sleek" and "thin" their phones are, yet they walk around with them wearing the equivalent of a down-filled parka that is anything but "sleek".
I did compromise a bit, just because I want to keep my phone looking nice. I found the Cimo clear case. It is very thin, and very clear. It has just enough of a "lip" around the edge so that the screen of the phone won't contact the ground when it is lying down (or dropped on its face). The soft rubbery cushioning should also protect against dings on the corners and back, as well as prevent scratches. All without sacrificing the beauty of the phone. I paid $10 on Amazon for it.

I did not buy a unibody aluminium finish phone to hide it behind chinese plastic covers. Thats not my style. I have pretty much the same type of use like yours. The only thing that has happened with me is that the beats audio red sticker at the behind bottom plate is now fading off. Nothing else. Just keep keys/card holder and coins in other pocket. I dont think you need a plastic cover.
When I had my One I used the HTC hard shell - minimal design but clear so you could still see the phone. Best case I had IMO

Yeah I've been running mines nekkid since I got it last April, just couldn't bring myself to spend money to cover such a good looking device. Other than some wear marks around the shiny beveled edge, there's no obvious signs of age.
I'm not rough on it, but I don't baby it either. I have dropped it a few times(on purpose, just to show people how durable it is), and run my knife across the screen and back, but no damage.

And what about lens cover ? Is yout lens completely hidden, or do you have it like me ? Hidden on one side, flush with body on the other.
Do you use any kind of pouch or something ?
never ever use a case defeats point of having such a wonderful design,have a leather pouch when not in us and just treat it like a baby when in use 6 months on still pristine not a mark

My lens cover is slightly recessed, so no, not like you, but haven't had any damage to it. No pouch or anything, just keep it in my pocket with my change.

I am careful when I lay it down on certain surfaces.
And I try *very* hard never to let it slip out of my hands and fall.
No damage due to general wear. I dented the back slightly and roughed up one corner slightly.
Totally worth it. Love the feel and thinness of the phone.

this is how i use mine. transparent cover over the back which i only put on because the aluminum is actually very slippery for me and the clear skin provides better grip so i dont drop it. clear cover over the screen and im good to go. few small areas around the front bevel where the blue has worn away but other than that its prefect. i never use a case, defeats the purpose of having a thin phone.
I Have been using it without cover, but in December it has fallen on the road so i ordered some cheap one from the e-bay.
So now, i am using it with cover, but i lost that great metal feeling of the phone.

I use no covers, just matte screen protector (I like the way my display looks with it). Bought it in June 2013. It fell on the floor several times, it got only one scratch on the top (on the lright corner), but it still looks amazing! As it's always in my pocket, lately the "beats audio" logo on the back is going away slowly... but i use nothing to protect it

+1. Dont know how long I would keep the phone. But while I have it might as well enjoy the quality feel of it.
My HTC One is about two weeks old. I love it so much, I can't bring myself to cover this baby up.
Also, I am paying for a warranty, so if anything happens to it I'll get a new one, or maybe the M8 if they run out =D
Yes, I know it doesn't effect the functionally and features. Overall I'm impressed with the G4. It's just that I'm incredibly careful with my phones and very OCD about scratches, yet after only a few days I'm already seeing tiny little micro scratches appearing on that silly glossy strip around the phone. Why couldn't they have made it matte? Or even satin? I had a Lumia 1020 and it held up very well, thanks to its matte finish. The edges of a phone experience the most wear and tear, and with glossy finishes being the least hard-wearing - or at least the finish that shows up scratches the worst - I just wish LG had thought a bit more about this rather than just going down the 'it looks nice when you first buy it so that's all that matters' route.
This isn't a serious criticism of the device, I just wondered if glossy plastic edges like this annoy anyone else? I'm fairly confident that someone is going to say 'aluminium edges are just as bad' or 'my G4 is perfect and I've never had a single LG get a scratch on it', but my personal experience with LGs is that they seem to let themselves down in terms of material choices sometimes. The brittle plastic on the G3 - which would often crack along the IR port or rear mic over time, is a case in point. The laser autofocus on my G3 also got small hairline scuffs on it. My Nexus 4 soft touch coating rubbed off completely in certain areas along the edge. I always keep my phones in their own pocket and I'm very careful where I put them.
Just wondered if it bothers anyone else. It's a phone at the end of the day, not a baby...but I do like to keep things nice and it annoys me when my new devices start to develop wear really quickly!!
Yeah I think it's a bummer. So I left my protective film pieces on the phone and just cut off the little pull tab on each sticker. That should prolong the inevitable.

I'm running a case on it now, but the bezel kept me from getting the tan leather
I just clipped the ends of the factory protective film as well. I was originally planning on removing the film altogether, but since I'm waiting on OEM plastic backs to show up en masse on eBay at a reasonable price so I can buy one and use my case, we'll see how long the film lasts instead. A matte or brushed finish would have been much better regardless of whether the trim ring was plastic or metal.
It's definitely not as attractive a design as the g3 IMHO

TL;DR: buy if you want more grip on the phone and don't mind minimal protection, don't expect a premium product as it's average at best.
This may or may not be the case for you. The case is extremely cool looking with the carbon weave under a smoked layer of resin that feels somewhat rubbery if you ever had a oneplus "karbon" case you'll know the texture its grippy but not so much that it grabs onto lint and anything else that may be residing in your pocket. It's also extremely thin, I didn't measure it but their claims of being less than 1mm thick seem very true there isn't much bulk added to the phone nor weight. Both pieces of the case comes with semi sticky pads (more like post it note sticky not 3m double sided tape) on them to keep it planted onto the device which definitely helps it stay put unlike the issues some experienced with other cases, it does however make the phone difficult to open since the case covers the beveled edges and makes them pretty flat with the inner screen.
Now onto the negatives of which there are a few, the biggest issue and the one that ruined the case for me isthe fact that it doesn't cover the bottom of the chin leaving everything exposed, and worse yet the piece that covers the front of the chin seems like it'd be perfect to trap dirt under and grind it into that gorgeous aluminum. Normally I avoid cases that don't offer bottom protection like that but in the case of Evutec there's almost no indication in the product photos of the case not covering the chin. My other issue is with the quality of the case, there's sharp edges all around the case, especially where the chin curves out, material is also very uneven and the curves don't match up from side to side. Overall I'd say it's a $10-$15 case not a whopping $60 in terms of the quality.
Note: the red vinyl on the phone under case wasn't on it when I initially got the case and it fit the same with or without vinyl.
Not that there a lot of options, but the Evutec is far better than the Case-Mate. I like that the Evutec has the double-sided tape, the case stays on.

It's extremely overpriced for something that doesn't even cover the bottom of the phone, kinda disappointing since their cases for other phones are very high quality at a third of the price of this.

Just noticed the hinge and chin can be damaged if dropped because of lack of protection. I hope we get more options soon.
