Sprint network with note 4. - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone else notice bad performance on 3g and 4g? I put it next to another sprint phone and the note struggled to gain a signal compared to the other phone which connected immediately with a low signal, but still worked.

I have yet to associate the words good and performance with sprints data..... i just have hope that one day my unlimited data will pay off.....lol

I notice i only get 1 bar 90% lte but still pull from 18 to 30 meg speed test sitting right next to my note 3 has 5 bars only pulls 14 to 19 meg have not tried 3g yet

I'm always on one bar LTE for some reason. But yeah speeds aren't too bad. Anyone know why LTE shows at the same time as WiFi when I'm connected to WiFi?

No it was doing it before that. Thanks. Reboot fixed. Who knows what had it stuck. I've been trying to wait for official sprint root but it's killing me. Miss all my root tools. May take the tmob plunge tonight.

Yes, I have both the Note 3 and 4 the Note 4 has a very weak signal compared with the note 3. Even though speedtests show a faster download speed due to Spark I have been stuttering on Pandora which never happened on the Note 3. I am considering returning this phone.

I too always have one bar compared to an s5 that has full. Dunno if it is real or not because whenever I place a call the bars jump to full.

Poor reception compared to s5 i think it has something to do with the build quality also problems with receptions on tmobile

I've seen this with my old phone the HTC Evo 4G LTE. People brought it up in the phone's forums. The one bar shows your data connectivity, and since this phone can't do data and voice simultaneously, it switches over to Evdo when making a call. So when making a call, it shows your Evdo connection strength, and when not in call, it shows your data strength

Guys the 1 bar is a glitch in the Note 4. Download SignalCheck and you will see your real signal. I have a -85 signal and still see one bar I'm not sure whats going on but definitely a Note 4 bug.

I noticed this last night when I was at this place I normally go to and had LTE in the past with my S5 and G2. My N4 was struggling to keep connected and kept falling back to 3g, and my girls G2 remained on LTE. Perhaps an update can fix this type of stuff for us.....

I was getting poor signal while I was at work. Had me worried about how the radio would perform. Fear not though, the below speed tests were taken while I was driving to a meeting. Faster than my Droid Razr.

i get 1.27 mb/s on 3g in my room :/ I'll try it tomorrow on hspa+... it better be SIGNIFICANTLY faster :/

Who cares lol most people never come close to 2GB, let alone 4GB.
If that was a passive-aggressive way of laughing that T-Mobile gets unlimited data...you really shouldn't laugh about something like that. If T-Mobile could get half the speed Verizon's LTE network gets (in the general population) then I would be amazed.
Then again when you hit that 2GB "non-limit" your speed should keep a cool 200Kbps or so, no?

Oh please vzw fanboy, go looks in the tmo GS2 section, they're getting 20-32mbps down from a lot of the screen shots i was looking at. And no, I'm not on tmo, I'm on AT&T and use a GS2 Skyrocket and get killer LET speeds. Don't knock a network when you obviously don't know what HSPA+ is capable of.

95% of Verizon Wireless data users consume less than 2GB. The other 5% use 44% of the data thats processed on the network. I'm fine with the 2GB limit (though I am unlimited)... I have never used more the 1.5gb.

Depending on the time of day. You will see significantly higher speeds in the middle of the night as there are minimal users on the tower compared to say, 3-5 when everyone is getting off or about to get off of work and is on there phone seeing what everyone did that day or is going to do that night.
I dunno why this has turned into a stupid T-Mobile v Verizon argument, but seriously cut the ****. For one, T-Mo doesn't throttle at 100mb or 2GB - you get 5GB of high speed data and then you're throttled.
At any rate, it's good to see that the 4G radio on the new GN is up to speed! Hopefully battery live holds up as well!

Comparing hspa+ to LTE. If it were reliable and consistent with high speed in the 20mbps+ range like you say according to screen shots, Why would att be fumbling all over themselves trying to deploy LTE. I think it's very safe to say that when comparing network quality and speed Verizon has broken away and is steadily pulling.
Att loves the HSPA+ and the re branding of "4G".
Wow, I was just joking and wasn't trying to turn it into a pissing contest between carriers. lol some of you guys are so defensive.

ummm, some plans have a 2gb soft cap, some have a 5gb cap. you pay more for the 5gb cap. I was throttled the first month with them. They are seem serious about it for the newer customers while legacy customers still seem to get true unlimited. Jumped ship to verizon for true unlimited and avg 5-7gb a month, no cap at all.
Oh, and when they throttled me (t-mobile), I only got about 50kbps down and every app or webpage would time out...

kinda like verizons 3g speed compared to att's? Att got a late start but their lte will end up the same. faster. add in the fast that it falls back to hspa+ and it's a much better solution. coverage is dependant on area of course.
and yes those ping times are terrible
All this is fine, well, and good, but since my SGN can't even keep a 1x signal and has pretty much stayed at -120dbm since I brought it home yesterday, I'm gonna have to take it back. My T-bolt & Eris are both giving me -95 to -100 signals when side by side (all sitting on tables, so I'm not holding it wrong...) I hope it is just the one I got so I can continue to live the Nexus dream!

T-Mobile signal *Temp fix*

Youre not the only one. The problem is there seems to be more interference when holding the phone at the bottom where the antennas are in particular with your left hand. When there is more skin contact to the bottom left of the phone is where the problem starts. If you go to Settings> about device > status you can check the db signal as you hold the phone. You will notice a huge spike at the minimum of 10dbm (higher the dbm the worse the signal) which is enough to cause 4g signal loss and down to edge if you're already in a low signal area. Now try holding the phone upside down and to where the bottom of the phone is exposed and not making any skin contact and you will barely see any dbm change and 4g acquisition is better. You can try to perform the same test with you s2 and you probably wont see the dbm go up as much as the s3.
The only other option maybe is to get a case. There are other threads about this already but I'm using tapatalk app so I cant go to my subscribed section to repost them without discarding this reply.

I noticed this too since I got the phone over a week ago.
I think maybe it's the micro sim card because I've never had this problem with any other phone.
And I don't know if it's the death grip because I'm always on my blue tooth.
I went to Tmobile today and they didn't really do much, they said to exchange the phone.
I don't know if that's gonna do much good.

That could be it. My previous phone with T-Mo had been acting weird the past month. All bars but couldn't make calls or text, and no internet from home, mostly in the mornings. Had to switch carries.

I can confirm that my SGS2 has a better signal than my SGS3. It is about 5dBm weaker. At least that is what the signal strength says. The key thing is the the SGS3 switches to EDGE because of a perceived weak signal (-110dBm) and it does switch back until you are in a stronger signal area. I was able to have a decent 4G signal even if my signal was -101 to -110 dBm. I could get a 4mb/s download and 1.5mb/s upload connection on speedtest. So the SGS3 does not need to switch to EDGE. My SGS2 shows a stronger signal so it doesn't switch at all. I suspect if I could lock my phone to 4G only I would be able to have similar reception as my SGS2. Maybe a future radio update will fix this. On my side I redecided to return the phone and get a replacement SGS3. Maybe that will work better.

That is the only way to fix this issue. It is more then just loosing the signal by holding the phone wrong. I live in a very fast T-Mobile area and getting around 20 MB down and 5 MB up. I will see all my bars drop without even touching the phone. This does not happen with any other of my T-Mobile phnes. I always hav e all bars all the time at my house. This is a serious problem that needs to be fixed.
I am sending my phone back in the AM and if the new one has the same issue I will not keep it. Too bad this is a killer phone with a lousy problem.

I have the same problem... Mine actually loses 4g and loses entire signal in the middle of street where I should have 90% signal. This also disconnects any active calls and after a minute or two, signal is back. Then again the cycle repeats every 5 minutes for all day...
I blame the modem. I live in an area where we actually have pretty damn strong and fast reception (Southern Cali..). But I too have noticed that it like to flip a lot for no apparent reason. But my Samsung Vibrant did the same thing depending which modem you used. And the modems that performed the best with that phone were impacted greatly by the region in which you were trying to use it. For instance, here in Southern Cali I felt like overall KB5 had the most consistent, and data powerful signal. But in some areas of Boston I felt that KA7 was a clear winner. It's brand new. Just be patient and give them a few weeks to kinda analyze and address the most pressing issues. And I'm sure that they'll roll out a new modem with that update. I believe there were 12 total when they stopped officially updating the Vibrant.. So there will be options ;]

Lack of 3G ? About to return my SGS3 for an iPhone

So is there a "3G" on the SGS3, because I either get full bars and "Edge" or I get "4G"(which is HSPA+) but I never have just plane jane "3G"?.....its starting to bug me because my friend has ATT as well and we will be standing in the same exact place and his iphone will get 3G while my SGS3 will only have edge.....I don't understand why this is? Does the iPhone have different antennas or something? I don't really want to trade my SGS3 in for an ios device, but all the features on the SGS3 become somewhat pointless when I can't really do anything because edge blows ass... So can anyone give me some insight into the matter?

Have you looked in wireless and settings > mobile networks > Network Mode?
Hsdpa and hsdpa+ are 3g homie. The phone calls it 4G however as a marketing tool. If your on true 4G it will say 4G lte.
Check what user above said. And have you run a side by side speed test?

Maybe you got a lemon but some of my coworkers have iPhone and in downtown area they get edge and I get 4G lte. I came from an iPhone also and I can tell you sgs3 has better signal everywhere and lte is the reason why.

I would recomend getting a replacement S3 first to see if you have any improvements. If the phone doesn't use 3G or 4G(HSPA+) at all then that is not normal behavior. I have not once been connected to Edge since i got my phone a month ago.

I don't have any of those network settings you are talking about. There is no wireless and settings? I have More settings and then network modes, but there isn't any selection for like 3G 2G LTE etc....
I ran a side by side speed test, and he got like 1.4MBPS and I couldn't even get the speed test to load, but after trying I did and it was like .3 MBPS...
I understand the LTE signal thing, but there is no LTE here and I don't think its coming anytime soon, I am in the military and currently operating out of Watertown, NY so yea... middle of no where.
I think I might have to try and replace it I suppose..I am within my thirty days, but unfortunately I didin't have time when I purchased it so I bought it at a wireless kiosk and they are a bit more of a pain to deal with when it comes to exchanging phones... Thanks for the input guys.
Not sure what's going on with your device. I'm either on H / 4G / 3G and on my iPhone 4 I was always on 3G. Completely different location/network than you, but it definitely sounds like your device is doing something strange.
Try toggling airplane mode on/off. For some reason, ics trends to drop to edge if you don't have a super strong signal.

Actually I have been doing this sometimes, it seems to work sometimes, but not always...
Question : Is there even a "3G" signal icon? Or It always just shows "4g" when you are on 3G and up?

Yes, there is an a 4G and 3G icon.
Long shot, but if you dial * # * # 4 6 3 6 # * # * in the keypad and choose Phone Info, what do you see under 'Set preferred network type:'?
Default is WCDMA preferred, I believe.
(Also be careful in here and DO NOT click the Update button.)
Dialer code didn't work for me. I had to use an app called Device Info. Under device information:

But, it doesn't let you change the setting.
don't get an iphone, those things are boring and lame

It also depends on where you live, the area and the service providers radio towers connection to your device specifically

Depends what phone on at&t siii there us No 3g icon. OK there is one in systemui but it us not used. The phone always shows 4g when on 3g umts or hspda or pseudo 4g hspda+. it also shows edge and 4g lte. I am on a micro cell at home which is 3g and it still shows 4g. The way to really check us to go to system then about device then status and see what network mode you are on. Here in the screenshot you can see 4g but also that the phone is using hspda which is normally 3g in any other phone

usually no or just 1 bar

Hi all.. Ive had my Note 4 now for 2 weeks.
here in St Louis, I rarely get any bars on a signal.
usually just a small dot or 2 on the meter on the notification bar.
Once in a great while do I get a full 4 or is it 5 bars?
Anyhow.. some reason, I think I should get full signal bars 90% of the time..
Not the opposite
Any suggestions would help alot.
All replies are welcomed and encouraged.
Thanks again..

You may need that Sprint Aire wave or whatever it's called to boost your signal

The bars you are seeing are now Spark strength and not cell signal strength. Switch your mode to CDMA only and watch them magically appear for the 3G strength.

I live in Independence, MO - about 25 miles from the Sprint headquarters in Overland Park, KS - you'd think that the hometown area of Sprint would have awesome LTE signal but this is not the case. So you're not the only one experiencing 0 -1 bar on a regular basis. Yes, switching to CDMA will get you more bars but LTE is what we're all looking for.

Either call Sprint and tell them to mail it to you (CS) or go to a store and pick it up let them know you are not receiving a strong signal that your are paying for

You do realize the Airave is only for the home, right? I was barely or not getting a signal at my house, I called them and they sent me the Airave.
I had an air rave for my note 2 and sent it back after I got my note 4 because it's pretty useless now that the note 4 already has WiFi calling built into the phone. Iat does the same thing as the air rave.
Please don't complain about bars without actually looking at your signal levels(dbm) using signal check or similar program. Saying you have 1 bar means absolutely nothing.
For instance I will have 1 bar and my LTE signal is in the -84 to -90 dbm range which should give you excellent speeds.

I'm telling you the bars in this thing mean absolutely nothing in correlation to dbm's.... I've seen it as low as -84 and as high as -110 with 1 bar, but most of the time it hovers in the mid 80's to low 90's.
This phone has been reported to have a glitch that will never show more than 1-2 bars while on LTE. I believe it to be a programming glitch that will likely be fixed in a firmware/modem update.
People should really go join s4gru.com to learn a lot about signal levels etc.....

I understand the "Glitch" with our phone, but a lot of people do not take the time to read about their device and they start jumping to conclusions, sometimes I'm that way too but hopefully samsung will put out an update to fix the issue in the near future.
It does seem like signal on band 41 isn't the greatest. However, B41 deployment is just getting started in my area so it could be a lack of optimization.
Make sure you download Signalcheck to see what network you really are on.

I'm unsure on whether when it shows 3 or more if the bars are measuring the CDMA strength or LTE. I have had full bars before with the LTE showing but LTE wasn't lit up and I'm assuming it really wasn't pulling data from LTE.

Sprint Note 4 running on AT&T ???

Hi guys i have been skimming this forum for years learning to root different phones and tablets, but only as a guest.
Today i had my sprint note 4 successfully unlocked and it now runs on AT&T through straight talk.
I am getting 10 times better service signal and data wise with hspa over sprints horrible 3g service in Virginia.
Anyway i am happy with everything, but i have a question. I have cross referenced the specs between the att, tmobile, verizon and sprint variants of the note 4 and all show they have the same bands available, what are the chances that someone has gotten AT&T true 4g lte working on a sprint branded phone, is it possible and if not why?.
Thanks in advance
Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk
If this is true. Good. Lots are speculating no data on the other variants while on the sprint note 4. So are you complete domestic unlocked or just unlocked for international. ?

Complete domestic unlock, able to use any mvno for AT&T or TMobile, im using straight talks AT&T network personally. Here is pics of my status, i have wifi on here at home is why it says data not connected, but im getting 7.9mb/s dl on hspa consistently

Was recommended by another member on here, dude from this sight rooted and did the complete unlock remotely for me for 50 bucks. Cant beat it at all! Great customer service and the guy literally answered like 40 emails back and forth of questions i had before i even paid him.
Cant express how happy i am to actually be able to use my note 4 as intended. It was a paperweight with sprint service.

there may be something wrong with your modem. I would suggest resetting modem changes and provisioning with a reset + ##786# + ##72786#, etc and put everything back to stock and start over. ..all just a suggestion as I am fairly sure that is the best you'll get out of the Note 4 (N910P)
you may want to go to frequencycheck and make sure the bands your attempting are even a possibility ...https://www.frequencycheck.com/comp...n920p-galaxy-note-5-td-lte-32gb-samsung-noble

May be your sim card. Is it a 4g sim?
Also make sure your apn is correct. Check this: https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KB424489
I am getting true 4G LTE through straight talk on my Sprint note edge. I used idoneapps to unlock it. Enabled ehrpd, enabled lte, and set 1x to hybrid. After restart I went to apn settings and selected automatic and used the straight talk apn that my lte Sim card came with. I am using a Sim card I got from a zte straight talk phone, not the Sim card packpack.
