[Q] "My Knox" app and Knox bit - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Unable to find any info regarding using the "My Knox" app, from Google Play for the S5 and Note 4, after rooting the Note 4 with CF-Autoroot.
My question is: After rooting with CF-Autoroot the Knox bit is now tripped to 0x1. ( - directed at Samsung) Would this prevent the "My Knox" app from working on the Note 4?
My definition of working: Once installed would I be able to setup my company email from within "My Knox" and receive email and see meeting notices. Also would I still be able to switch between my side of the Note 4 and the company "Knox" side? Or once the Knox bit is tripped does this app no longer function in this capacity?
Background: On my current device, a Sprint S3, I don't subscribe to my work Exchange email account. The fact that my company can wipe the entire phone, or prevents an unlock method I prefer, are the major turn-offs. To check my company email I currently login via a web session. Using the "My Knox" app potentially changes this for me. A friend has "My Knox" on his S5 (but with it being 4.4.2 can root without tripping Knox) and works as expected. Since the Note 4 has 4.4.4 rooting trips Knox, not sure if the "My Knox" app will still work as I describe above.
Appreciate some insight.

If your KNOX is tripped and a company server verifies your KNOX status it will deny your phone access to it as it will think your phone has been compromised and is a security risk. This is an IT policy with most companies and if you are in with the IT department you might be able to get your phone exempted but if not then your phone will be denied access to the mail server and maybe even the intra office network. Depends on the policies they have in place for KNOX violations.

I had knox tripped on s3, still had corp mail access. We use google device policy app. So no issues there. Nothing to be concerned about

Apologies for the late response Solarenemy68, figure I would wait until I have my Note 4! The info you provided is valuable, but not applicable to the app. My question was in regards to the "My Knox" app that Samsung has available in the Play store. Notice I put "My Knox" in quotes in my initial post to be specific to that app and not KNOX on the device. The company I work for does have apps that utilize the security of KNOX, but that is not what I support (I am in IT) or use.
Since acquiring the Note 4 I installed the "My Knox" app and was able to setup my company email inside this "Private" section. After setting up my company details inside the "Email" app inside "My Knox" I could still use the my Fingerprint to unlock the phone, which my company does not allow. Then use a valid pin/password to get into "My Knox".
Using this app was great because I could use my phone without fear of the company snooping or wiping my device.
Today I did the CF-Auto-Root method to gain root access and after doing so "My Knox" told me it was locked and to see a System Administrator. Tried to uninstall "My Knox" and then reinstall but no success. The message when trying to setup the app now states "My Knox cannot be installed because a custom OS has previously been installed on this device". Without this setup I can no longer use this app to segregate my work email and policy rules from my device. (Guess no work email for me, like on my S3).
The answer to my initial question would then indicate the Samsung "My Knox" app will no longer work after rooting the device. Updating the post so that others might find the answer useful.
In a day or so I might try to use the method to fake the device status from "Custom" using Xposed and see if "My Knox" works after that.

This is good info george1614 about possible policy setup by companies and that tripping KNOX might still let a user access their company email. My question was actually regarding an app in the Play store from Samsung called "My Knox".
After rooting my device with CF-Auto-Root this "My Knox" app no longer works, as the device is now "Custom".
Thanks for the reply :good:

Fixed! Samsung perks issues

OK,I bought my device in mid November for Xmas gift. Since the beginning of the year, I decided to use one of the perks. Low and behold I am charged. I try to contact the company involved and they say that they only provide a limited trial. But Samsung states the trial period is much longer. I contacted Samsung abouot my issue, and wonder what I was not sent during my registration. I own many Samsung devices and have had my account since late 2008. So I know my account registered the device and should have had some details in regards to perks. The only thing I got was a one time webpage with a Google play code for my credits, everything else was just unlinked information for all new subscribers to the perks.
Has anyone dealt with perks and have any ideas to resolve such issues? I don't want to be charged for something I am trying out.
Possible fix
Well, I finally an answer back from the second point of contact... they stated that they normally don't support tablet but offer support through phone service. Any way now I must call Samsung support to run through the issue one more time, so they can figure out what to do.
Some head way
OK, got done with my call to Samsung.
I learned not to register the device through your Samsung account devices page. I have many Samsung items through the years, as I had learned it is easy to go and register that way.
The proper link is http://www.samsung.com/us/register-for-your-galaxy-perks/#note-8 for the Note 8.0
Also for some odd reason they want a google email account, which I never had until after registering. Take note that if you have an existing Samsung account, the email address needed for registration completion is your gmail email address.
I wish web developers had a brain, this is not the first time I have seen such a broken way cross linking account information, just annoys the krappa out of me.
Now to fix the issue with Samung Link unable to fetch account authentication information with my Samsung account. Yes, I deleted and recreated the Samsung account many many times. Just another annoying issue. (
While waiting...
OK, while I had some time, I fixed my Samsung link issue... had to make it a system app. Samsung loaded PS Touch, and Samsung Link need to be kept as system apps. Though most of all the system apps can be removed and side loaded for Google Play to manage install/removal processes. I prefer it that way for reloads and memory management outside of using Titanium Backup. The less utilities to perform tasks the better. Somebody should do a right up on using built in function to perform most all needs, instead of finding more apps to do what you can do on your own and without rooting.
I doubt I'll ever fix the Video Hub issue... seems that it is getting info from Samsung servers about the device. If the device does not match the white list at the authentication server, your a no go at getting content. At one time the Note 8.0 was in the white list, now it looks like it is region select and will check firmware along with device.
I have an app to fake the ID and location, but Video Hub is not a concern just an odd app that has some interesting features that go beyond google play hardware requirements.
Woopie! )
Samsung got me my perks rewards resent to my email address. The Google account that I had to make since I did not use goodle before owning the Note 8.0.
Now I am going to redo my account on which I paid a months subscription, so I can apply my perks.

TO Note 3 gets same message on stsrtup

Hi, I've been away from android for a couple of years. I picked up a Note 3 on tmo. Me email, etc, no apps added yet. Only stock. Every time I start the phone I get the same message...A process or application has attempted to access system and has been stopped....or something very similar.
Every time. I've added no apps yet. So whatever is being shutdown, came on the phone.
Any ideas or thoughts? I've been away from android now for 2 years so I'm not up to date on anything..
Are you on wifi. If so that's the issue lol

You get Knox conflicting with Lookout, both trying to tell the other who is the boss. Don't worry it's harmless albeit little annoying, there should be option to not show this message for a month or something, try doing that. I rooted my phone and freezed both lookout and Knox, since they are useless to me ATM, never seen the message again. I think if you click on the message it will display offending application, so you can confirm it is Lookout pointing as Knox being the offender.

[Q] Redeeming free apps

Hi I'm new to these forums and I must say I love them! There's so much useful information!
So I thought that when buying this tablet I would get a bunch of free stuff. (50 gigs of dropbox, free linkedin pro for 3 months, etc...) I can't find any information about this anymore, I'm I missing something? Does anyone have any clue how to do this? I have already registered my device with Samsung btw.
Thanks in advance,
- Olivier
You should receive an email detailing the offers, sent to the address from which you registered your Samsung account. BTW, some of the offers, like the NYT access, begin from the time you register the account, NOT from the time you first access the offer. So, the first time I tried to access the Times premium content, it told me something like my premium access trial had expired, and asked whether I'd like to continue with a full-price subscription?
HA! Not likely...

Yes that's what I thought. I just double checked and I did receive an email after registering, but didn't see any links to get free stuff. In comparison I still had an email from when I registered my S3 with a link to get free stuff. I'm confused about what I else I can/should try... :s

Have you registered your device via the Galaxy Perks page?
Log in to your Samsung Account via a web browser (you can use the above link). Click on your name in the upper right, and select "My Profile". Verify that your device shows up. Sometimes just logging in to your Samsung Account via a web browser seems to trigger it, so it doesn't hurt to try even if you know you already registered your device.
Have you added the Samsung Account to the Note 2014 yet? If not, launch Samsung Apps and sign in with your Samsung Account when prompted. You might need to press the menu button and then select "Sign In" if it doesn't automatically ask you.
If you have, remove the Samsung Account, launch Samsung Apps and sign in again.
If you've done all that, you SHOULD get the "<NAME>, your gift for registering..." email at the Gmail account you specified when you registered.

[Q] "An update is required to access Samsung services"

Keep getting a popup warning every morning when we turn on our Note 8.0 then start the wi-fi that says: "An update is required to access Samsung services". So far we've answered "No" each time the warning is displayed until I find out what they want to update and just how much extra data will be deposited onto the tab if we allow it.
Yeah...I'm paranoid but the fact is, we don't use any Samsung services. I'd really like to turn the Samsung account OFF if that's a safe thing to do.
What do you say Note 8.0/Android community? Should I allow the update or would turning off the Samsung account stop the update notices???
EnzoS
I believe you can turn off the account, as a fact I have mine turned off and whenever I re-flash a new Rom either Stock or Custom I always say No to the Samsung account, but you can remove/delete your Samsung account by going here https://account.samsung.com/membership/service/getServieInfoList.do sign in, profile, remove account.
On your tablet it will still show Samsung account and you will notice that it cannot sync "sync error" when you click that it will try to sync and will fail, after that the Samsung account will be gone or if you do see "remove account" just remove it with that.
I will include a picture of the services that will be stopped.
Hoping this helps

Another U break it by disabling it thread... I see this all the time with peeps disabling features in MS Windows.
I use Samsung account to get the latest Samsung updates. Without your updates, your link, OS update, and most of all Miracast sync will not properly function. As there are bug fixes and added features.
I even have Google play store setup to be automated with updates as well. It is the only way to track the 200 or so downloaded apps being fixed and what not. Still waiting for 100% compatibility for Android 4.4.x... which may never be. HA!
Though I use dummy a google email account that are setup with features disabled. Google has buried a lot of user settings, but at least you have them to disable.
@gooberdude you telling us that if you don't setup the Samsung account you will NOT get an OS update? I find that strange cause as I said before I never set it up and still was getting my OS updates when I checked for updates, now of course after I Root the device with either CF-root or "the always mentioned by you" Saferoot, it will say that my device is modified and that there are no updates available.
I really don't see the point of a Samsung account and feel that Samsung is wasting resources/battery with constant syncing in trying to duplicate stuff (calendar, email, app store, etc) by putting an additional and IMHO unnecessary layer into the OS that Google already does.

I use saferoot and it does not show device is modified, because it is not flashed. Many root options require flashing, saferoot does not. So the flag is left alone.
Now for Samsung apps, you must have an account to use half of them. So if you are not using any Samsung apps, then don't bother with making an account.
I think you can still use the Samsung voice commander without an account... as it is at least 2x faster than Google and works just the same.
Its all up to you on what you want to do for getting updates. For me I get 3% battery drain every 12 hours when in sleep mode with WIFI enabled. Including having updates and email active. That is too small to think about disabling accounts or turning off sync and updates.
It seems too many Android peeps tweak things so much that they are paranoid by not doing enough. I am a minimalist. I do what I can with what I got, and find what is the issue before modifying, adding or removing stuff. I have found that Samsung and Google can interact well with each other to make operation of the tablet quick and stable. Though, Google needs to work more on getting things right with voice search and media player.
At least Samsung has addressed and fixed many wee issues with proper updates since January and March. Just waiting for 4.4.x to be released so I have that available when I want to upgrade.
@gooberdude don't hear me wrong, I am completely with you as far as the paranoia goes, I myself am a firm believer of Stock Rom with minimal tweaks, when it comes to updates I always check manually, I use the tablet mostly for reading my ebooks and occasional web browsing, email and getting good battery life, right now I'm at 2 days and 6 hours with 32% left, of course I enable my wifi when I need it.
I actually did send you a PM a few days ago asking about safe-root, don't know if you have seen or gotten that or not, I would like to start using safe-root to it full potential

Thanks guys for the comments and recommendations but perhaps I didn't make myself totally clear in the initial posting. I'd simply like to know if I can avoid being bothered to update my account or apps or whatever by turning off the Samsung account on the tablet. I don't have to (nor do I want to) delete the Samsung account entirely. I just want to take it off the tablet (turn it off/disable it) with hopes that the popups warning me that "An update is required to access Samsung services" will go away.
As I stated earlier, we don't use any Samsung services and don't even download any apps from the Samsung apps store. As Harjan112 said: "...Samsung is wasting resources/battery with constant syncing in trying to duplicate stuff (calendar, email, app store, etc) by putting an additional and IMHO unnecessary layer into the OS that Google already does." We also are quite minimalistic and are very happy to run the tab with as little as possible running in the background and only update what we use if absolutely necessary.
Your comments in this regard will be appreciated.
EnzoS
You can remove the account from the tablet without deleting it entirely.
Go to your settings... Accounts... Click Samsung account then on the right side of the screen you will see Accounts with your email address click that, then in the top right corner you should see remove account.
This also should stop the update notice.
Hoping this helps

Harjan112...thank you very much for the detailed information. I needed to be assured that removing the Samsung account from the Note 8.0 was the right way to go and your explanation seems to be right on the money. The tab is my wife's and I don't think she would appreciate it too much if I decided to root the thing and experiment on it in any way (ha).
Now if I could only get an answer to my other problem: the Gallery's data file bloating itself for no apparent reason every time the tab is turned on or rebooted. It's pretty strange that (so far) 118 people have viewed the posting but not one reply...not even a foolish recommendation (ha).
Thank you again. I will definitely give it a try now.

Thank you for your interest in my "other" problem. I did indeed post my question in the Galaxy Note 8.0 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting thread as: "GN8 Gallery data eating up drive space" back on the 1st of March. I thought I was fairly clear on the description and I would appreciate it if you would check it out. I'd be more than happy if you had questions for me as I'm baffled by what's happening. Please read my post.

Ah, well we did not follow your past question... I found with my antivirus app, that I get over 350MB of cached images just with my mp3 ID3 tags having album art.
I found that if you install Xposed framework and add the Wanam Xposed module, you have he ability to disable caching of images. Since disabling, I get zero cache. As for clearing the cache, you will either add a cleaner app or replace your antivirus with one that has built in added utilities.
Though one thing about disabling cache, you will notice slower image redraws with any images that are stored on slow SD cards. I have 633x UHS-1 SD card installed, and do not find images having issues with delayed image redraws from SD.
Hope this helps.

Samsung pass on Knox tripped devices

I recently and quite sadly discovered that once you trip knox, samsung pass no longer functions..
this is a change from the Note5, s6, s7 and note7.. where even if you had tripped knox and have root you could still register your biometrics and use them to login to:
websites
samsung account
unlock phone..
after the addition of samsung pass, we now only have the ability to unlock our device with biometrics. Website access, Samsung account and even some apps like my banking app that previously allowed us to use a fingerprint do not.
this majorly sucks.. as I tripped knox right away and still want to be able to login to websites with a finger touch...
SO while trying to modify the samsung pass apk to be more lenient.. I discovered that if you simply remove samsung pass...
rename
/system/priv-app/SamsungPass_1.3/SamsungPass_1.3.apk
to
/system/priv-app/SamsungPass_1.3/SamsungPass_1.3.apj
then remove /data/app/com.samsung.android.samsungpass-1
then reboot..
now when you go into the settigns > lock screen > fingerprints > enter pin > Samsung pass is gone, and re-replaced with the original menu items to toggle, websites and samsung account login!! flip the toggles and you are all set to go.
FYI: I had to clear data on my banking app and relogin for it to trigger the change and allow me to register my fingerprint to login

HI man,
I followed your steps. I did not have any reference of samsung pass in /system/priv-app/* but I did delete the folder I found in /data/app/. I don't have any reference to samsung pass in my settings options but my banking app will still not allow me to register a finger, no prompt appears.
Rooted with Magisk, xposed installed, knox is tripped. Any ideas?

this majorly sucks.. as I tripped knox right away and still want to be able to login to websites with a finger touch...

I recently and quite sadly discovered that once you trip knox, samsung pass no longer functions..
this is a change from the Note5, s6, s7 and note7.. where even if you had tripped knox and have root you could still register your biometrics and use them to login to:
websites
samsung account
unlock phone..

It worked for me on Galaxy S9 but my folder was /data/dat/app/com.samsung.android.samsungpass
then reboot and now can unlock with fingerprint
I'm pretty sure you could get the same effect without removing Samsung Pass.
Go to Settings>>General Management>>Language and Input>>Autofill Service and change it to Google.
