[Q] When Root goes bad. - Amazon Fire Phone

I successfully rooted my friends Fire Phone by downgrading to 3.5 OS.
After the root was done, everything was performing well. EXCEPT TWRP. TWRP would not install no matter what I did, not sure what went wrong there...
Anyways, my friend decided to factory reset which led to a bootloop I have never encountered before. I can get to the screen where it asks to register device, then it asks whether or not to enable location services, then it asks to register device, going back & forth......
Im fairly sure this is because of a reset while rooted without TWRP.
I have tried toolkits to unbrick, followed steps through adb, seems like nothing works.
Even more annoying is that there is no way for me to turn on the USB debugging on the phone (since factory settings were reset), so command prompt does little good. I can see the device showing up in my computer though. Just no way for phone to allow the access.
I have rooted a few phones, but never one with this much trouble. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Does anyone have a system dump? Or know where to download one for Fire Phone?
Dont think I can fix the phone without it. & then I still have to figure out how to get usb debugging "on" while not being able to get in settings, so that ADB command can connect with phone

I broke my 3.5 install too, but got it working again by sideloading 3.6.2 and then going to 3.5 again. Each time with full reset. Have you tried that?

It wont show up in sideload b/c i dont have usb debugging on. Thus, my problem. Ive tried that many times. I have correct drivers. I was using ADB prior to my factory reset. Now, its screwed haha. Amazon will be ecstatic

I dont think that twrp or any custom recoveries are available on the Amazon Fire Phone. Installing the twrp was likely the issue. Not the root. I can factory reset my rooted Fire Phone with no issues.

Fully Bricked Galaxy Nexus! HELP!

Okay so my friend bricked his galaxy nexus (Gave it to me because he said its bricked) of course i accepted it lol. But i tried to fix it i did everything i could from reading forums i swear i have worked forever looking for a fix. It is completely unresponsive no download mode. no ADB connection because when it plugs into a computer it shows up as OMAP 4440 or something like that. i have tried all kinds of different drivers and i have tried on multiple computers (Xp, Windows7, even a mac) he said he was flashing the sdcard or something and unplugged it by accident. So i could understand that being a issue since the phone only has a internal sd card. Anyone know how to get it back? i havent seen a Jtag yet for it and i have a Jig for my Galaxy Sii Skyrocket but it doesnt work on the nexus (FYI to anyone out there the jig works on my dads samsung windows phone) HELP!
You tried different drivers? You should just use the most current ones for the phone. Did you try the new toolkit mskip posted? Did you isntall the SDK?

Thanks for the response i didnt use mskips i dont think. i have tried the galaxy nexus toolkit 6.0 or whatever but i have tried all kinds of drivers including the google official galaxy nexus i515 or something like that. it shows up as omap 4440 in app manager and disconnects and connects constantly then says device didnt install properly. what do you mean by the sdk? i cant find any way to access my phone. i think i tried something with sdk but im not sure
Yes i read up i did do that GNex Toolkit v6.0 and it wouldnt find my phone (Because of the omap 4440 disconnect and reconnect thing i believe.
First off, on't use a toolkit.
Second, when you plug it in, go to device manager, right click the "OMAP 4460" and click install driver. Either install PDANet or find the driver online and your phone should be able to be used in fastboot.
Finally, if your (Or your friends) phone was "Fully Bricked" it wouldn't be recognized by the computer, it wouldn't turn on, it would literally not be able to do anything except sit there, the fact that the computer sees it means that it is "Soft Bricked" which is much less serious.

I can get mine into CWM, but whenever I'm flashing a ROM, it reboots itself.
Install PDANet and when it asks for your phone, go into Task Manager and force close the process. This will keep the driver/program installed without needing your phone and it should then be seen in recovery.
Not working still :/
Thanks for highjacking my post twinky lol. i have seen the answer to yours around... google a little more.

Please Help!
My phone goes into boot loader and download mode however every time I flash Stock it finishes successfully and goes to the same google screen its always stuck on. I'm kinda a n00b so if anyone could help me with this (try to have a lot of detail) I would be grateful. Thanks
It sounds like what I did to my Galaxy Note before I bought my Nexus. When unrooting I overwrote my bootloader with a missed character through ADB. I tried everything, naked drivers, ODIN, all it would come up with was OMAP on the PC. I ended up having to return it to AT&T. Ask him if he was trying to root it the old way through ADB.

samiaziz, make sure you're wiping everything before flashing a stock rom. It wouldn't hurt to wipe system, cache and dalvik and then restart recovery (in advanced menu) and wipe again before flashing the stock rom.
Ok, as long as it shows up, it's still working
OMAP440 is the processor, which means, that is is working, but the bootloader is corrupt, or missing. I'd say it's corrupt (Flash-error)
The best way I've found, check this website: http://www.mobiletechvideos.com and see if they have a JTAG solution... (My JTAG device will arrive in a few weeks )
Even if they don't, send it in, and they'll figure out a way to do that I think they do some special offer, if you send it in for testing purposes...
But, other than that, there's no way I can help you. The firmware is completely fu**ed...
Tried That
I have already tried getting into recovery but that dosnt work. it takes me to the google splash screen
2 words: fastboot, linux.
sent from my i9250
Instead of JTAG-ing it, you could always try this. The maker of the Riffbox JTAG has come out with a solution for unbricking by reflashing the OMAP processor.. Aptly named OMAPFlash.
I've used it with success several times, but also had it fail on me. It can't hurt though, if your phone is already bricked.
If it's coming up with OMAP4460 (even briefly) when the phone is plugged into your computer without a battery, you are able to run the program. You just need to install the drivers for it.
See http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f634/unbrick-dead-samsung-gt-i9250-galaxy-nexus-32gb-prime-via-usb-cable-freeeeeeeeeeee-1465412/ for download.
Lemme know if you need instructions.

[Q] Might be bricked.

I rooted my fire a couple weeks ago. Used the KFU and everything worked perfectly. I have the android marketplace. I even downloaded the OTA something that allows you to temporally disable so I can still watch prime videos.
But tonight it powered off on its own and got stuck on the yellow triangle screen. I tried using the KFU and change it to normal boot mode. which seemed to work. It got to the Kindle fire screen and booted up. As soon as the carousel popped up it shutdown immediately and got stuck on the yellow triangle screen. It keeps doing this. Any ideas.
I tried reading many of the other threads, but I got majorly confused. So any help is appreciated. Thanks
edit: I noticed i had a few seconds before it would shutdown on me. I was able to open OTA rootkeeper and turn the root back on before it shutdown. As soon as I click restore root, it shutdown again, but it booted up fine. Im thinking the issue was caused by the root temporally being disabled. Is this a known problem. Seems to be working fine, will update tomorrow.
Edit: seems I have to changed it no normal boot everytime. Is there a way to unroot my fire. Hopefully its not too complicated.
Thanks for anything guys.
And I think the root is disabled at the moment, but not a %100 sure. NOt sure if that matters.
Mine's doing the same thing. I think it has something to do with the new OTA update? Mine will start up then reboot into recovery...any thoughts guys?
I'd start here, since it appears many others had similar problems with the OTA push:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634075&page=2
Supposedly KFU rooting still works. You may need to try this method again. Check this thread and see what others had to say as far as what worked for them. Good luck!
How do I unroot it completely. Its still getting stuck on yellow triangle. I used it for 30 minutes last night. Now unless I make it boot up normally, it gets stuck. getting frustrated.
Now when I use KFU to start it in normal mode, it gets to the Kindle fire screen, and occasionally the screen where I typed in my code to unlock it and it turns off, black screen, It will only turn on when plugged in.
edit: I guess my battery somehow died overnight. Swear it was full when I went to bed
Would updating my fire with the usb get rid of the root? I just want it back to normal. What is easiest way to do that?
Now its stuck on this cycle where it says theres an error and the kindle fire must reset to its original factory settings its does this. Reboots I think and does it again. Its stuck like this.

I *think* I'm having the same issue. When the fire is not plugged in, it's a black screen. No method of pressing the power button does anything (length of time, number of times, etc.). When it IS plugged in, the standard kindle fire/android logo just blinks. Again, power button has no effect whatsoever.
KFU shows ADB offline and Boot unknown.
Just some background info, I had a rooted working Fire. Out of the blue (likely the OTA update) it got stuck at the triangle logo screen and was able to get it into recovery mode. The first time I just reset it to factory.
Rooted again using KFU, said successful root, but installing Google apps kept saying failed or error until finally saying "All done!"
Then tried to install TWRP, and KFU got stuck at trying to put the fire into fast boot mode then <waiting for device>. Recovery screen came up again, and (here's where I made a bonehead decision) figuring I would help things along, I selected fast boot mode. It was stuck on the kindle fire screen for hours. I even tried reinstalling the drivers but that failed. I left it plugged in to my PC and when I woke up this morning I found it in the state it is in now that I first described above.
I will continue to search more threads for an answer, but if I don't update this one that I've found one, it means I haven't.

The "blinking" boot logo is indicative of a dead battery, probably caused by leaving it in fastboot mode for so long.

Your best bet is to follow the first link and do what you can to install FFF1.4 and that will allow you to charge your battery from such a low power state.
You'll have to use the fastboot flash command for this so be sure that the file you use to flash your bootloader is in a .bin format. Simply renaming a .zip to .bin will not work. You have to extract the u-boot.bin from the FFF1.4.zip, otherwise you will hard-brick your device. If you're unsure of what you're doing, ask for help.
On the chance you can't get FFF1.4 installed, you'll need to acquire a factory cable to keep the device powered on long enough to install your bootloader.
Another user recently had a problem that required a factory cable to fix. Take a look at that thread so you have an idea of what needs to be done and how to fix your problem. His problem was different from yours but the solution is the same. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25693109

Even after reading the posts regarding the factory cable, I'm still not sure what the difference is. I have been (successfully) using a Motorola Android phone cable that when plugged into the Fire (when it was working) would say that USB is connected and I can now transfer files. I also successfully rooted it once before and installed all the apps and such with the KFU. What would be different that would make this cable only now insufficient?
Btw, I was able to charge it using the stock wall charger. At least I assume it is charged because it is no longer blinking the kindle fire logo, and I am able to shut it down by holding the power button even when plugged into the USB cable.
However, it still won't do anything but show the android/kindle fire logo (static, not flashing/oscillating) whether it's turned on with or without a cable plugged in. Opening the KFU and trying boot modes does nothing. There is no acknowledgment whatsoever that it is connected to the PC either from the fire or the PC. I don't even get the sound effect from the PC that something has been connected via USB.

A "factory cable" is specially made to interact with the device in a way that is different from the OEM Motorola USB cable you are currently using. With a little research and a little more reading you'll be able to find out what the difference is and why it works for fixing dead battery issues.
Using the stock charger was one of the very first things covered in the first link that I gave you. I'm trying to help you fix your problem so please try to pay attention to the information I'm giving you.
So now that your battery issue is resolved, you have to fix the next part of the problem which is resetting your bootmode. By far the easiest way to do this is by flashing the latest 1.4 version of FireFireFire in recovery. Be sure to use recovery to install it or you may find yourself in more trouble than you started.
The thread for the new version along with important information on how to install and use it can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632375

I realize that, and I acknowledged it in my post by stating that it solved the drained battery issue. I also gave thanks on your post.
Accusing me of not paying attention is not necessary.
I only said that I don't see the difference in the factory cable because a) my drained battery was resolved by other means and b) I did read in the factory cable thread that "Seems like you have power and this cable is maininly for when your ... battery is dead and you need to ... fastboot with no battery life left.... So the cable does not matter in your case since your battery has power you can use any usb cable."

I also looked at this thread, but the initial post seems to imply that I already know how to "Apply this flash.zip from recovery just like any other ROM or kernel .zip file.", which I do not.
As I said, my fire is currently stuck at the kindle fire logo and does not respond to being plugged in to the PC (other than turning on to the kindle fire screen).
Admittedly, I only went about 4 pages deep into the thread, but it seemed to be all posts of thanks (for the most part) to the original post. I will continue reading the thread if you're saying that it indeed contains more helpful information.
I apologize if my post came across as ignorant or lazy, but the fact is that I've been researching this for the better part of the day, and I see plenty of info on what to do if I can get my PC to communicate with my Fire, but the first problem is that I cannot find out how to hurdle that first very important obstacle.
Just to save us both some time (and I do appreciate your patience and willingness to help), are you saying that I need a factory cable regardless of the state of the battery? Because if that's the case, then my first priority is to figure out how to get one, because my knowledge, means, and experience in soldering and inner workings of electronics is zero, so making one myself is not an option.
Forgive my impatience but playing twenty questions with other, less motivated to learn users, gets kind of old after a while (not to say that you fall into that category). Not to mention, I'm a prick and have very little patience to begin with.
With a good charge on your battery there is no longer a need for a factory cable.
Most of the users here are fairly proficient with the use of recovery so its easy to overlook those who aren't. That's why it's important to know up front what your level of experience is, to avoid such assumptions.
Your recovery (TWRP or CWM) has a mount function for mounting certain partitions as external drives onto your computer. Your computer will recognize it in the same way it does a thumb drive. Use it to mount your sdcard and transfer the FFF1.4 so it can be installed while in recovery.
Once installed, reboot and hold the power button as if you were trying to enter recovery again and you will be able to select which mode to boot with. Choose "Normal Boot".

Kindle Fire boots to black screen

Hello all,
So, I rooted my kindle fire and successfully installed TWRP but after flashing a new ROM (CM9 Reloaded) it just boots to a black screen. I will see the default kindle logo for a few seconds then nothing but a black back lit screen. I can't get into TWRP, adb shell can't find the device and kfu stalls out after waiting for my device to respond. Also, I don't believe FFF ever installed properly as I never saw the logo. I have tried re-installing the drivers but I still can't get my PC to see it. Under Device manager it will appear as Android Phone: Android ADB Interface.
I searched the forums and all I could find was that i need to get into fastboot which seems impossible at the moment. Is the factory cable my only hope?
Thanks Guys!

So the only option is to get or make a factory cable?
Factory cable is not your only option but it would definitely be the easiest route.
Otherwise, fix your drivers or do whatever you can to get adb working.
With FFF installed, you can access twrp and reflash the ROM or try a different one.

It was the only thing that worked for me but it all depends on how much time you are willing to spend on it. For me, it was well worth the $12. I bought mine from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20380015&postcount=9
The quality of the cable is great and I received it within a week. If it doesn't work at first don't freak out. It took a little while to get back into TWRP.
Good luck!

First bricked fire tv??

Not sure if its really bricked or not but Its all messed and wont fully boot so it doesnt have lan access anymore for ssh and adb over wifi. I have a male to male usb cable and my pc is recognizing when its plugged in but there are no device drivers installed and adb/fastboot wont recognize (no usb debugging enabled?) so it just hangs on <waiting on device> any idea how I can install devices drivers and move forward with restoring backup of the file I fuxored? Thx guys!
Have you tried disconnecting that A to A cable? When I tried using an A A cable from my laptop to the Fire, it hung when it booted.
It powered on, went to the first white on black Amazon logo, and halted. Disconnecting the cable and power cycling let it complete the boot cycle.
Havnt got that far yet myself but the way i tinker i will be there shortly .. but as a warning to others, if you are not 100% sure what you are doing, dont muck around especially if you remount /system as rw.
Playing around will be much safer once we get recovery..
Building a recovery shouldnt be too difficult.. its booting a custom recovery that will be the trick.. Jcase had allready said he has figured it out perhaps he will share now that root is out.

Ive got fastboot connected now so it appears it was some funky unknown issue. Fastboot isnt like adb tho and the only time ive ever used it was to re-write whole img files so is that my only option or is there some way I can push stuff through fastboot? The OTA firmware links posted a few weeks back are now dead too..
You can download the OTA updates (they are complete roms). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2709811 - links still work, i just redownloaded them (not sure where I put my old ones).
Only problem is the recovery looks for them at /cache/, which isn't writable w/o root. I'm not sure of the functions available via fastboot w/ Fire TV (don't have a cable), but if you can't get into the recovery from fastboot, you can always try to boot a dumped recovery.img from fastboot... but still not sure how you can work around the stock recovery looking for the update file at /cache/
edit: actually don't think fastboot will be of much use with a locked bootloader.

Im not have any luck with those links either ive even tried assigning a static public dns to make sure my opendns stuff was no longer blocking. Does anyone have an alternate link?

this is also one of the reasons that jcase hasn't released what he had (according to his G+ page). since if you bork the stock rooted rom, you'll have a hard time getting it fixed (since the rooted rom is the only current way in). If you can't boot the rom, then you can't fix anything. I'm no expert, so maybe one will chime in. But I think the next step after rooting, is to have a custom recovery, and a way to boot into it if the rom breaks - which we don't have yet.
I had a similar instance. Gained root messed around too much and got it to not boot. Amazon is sending a replacement... But if there is a way around that in the future I would love to just fix it my self.

So I couldnt even take the system.img and rewrite it using fastboot without having an unlocked bootloader? Sounds like the only way this thing will recover is install cwm/twrp recovery.img whenever that becomes available and then reflash w/ custom recovery.

Except you won't be able to install a custom recovery since only your ROM has root access and it doesn't boot.

Got you now. So this is def the first bricked fire tv lol. Guess ill just sit it to the side and see if someone smarter than I can figure something like this out in the future.
Have you tried fastboot boot commands? Like fastboot boot blahblahblah.img? If it is softbricked i guess it can't hurt to try rite?
I don't know if this will work or not, but if you've already tried pulling the power, pulling USB and powering on the next thing I'd try is to obtain a 1 gig or so USB drive, format it fat32 and copy the OTA update to it.
- Leave it zipped.
- Name it update.zip
- pull the plug on the FTV
- put the USB stick in
- power it on and leave it for a bit. Watch it - is the power LED going out? If so, it may doing a recovery install of the signed OTA and rebooting - many Android devices will install anything on the sdcard called Update.zip if it's there at boot time.
What you're hoping is that the USB mass storage is mounted as a possible recovery source at power on and that the OTA is isntalled via the stock recovery. If it works, great, if it doesn't, too bad.
another brick on the wall ?
Dear OP ' i think you are not the only one .
im not sure if im bricked or plain noob
after i rooted successfully and did the blocking through host editor guide in fire tv news and for a good measure i run this command "su
pm disable com.amazon.dcp" . all was good and i had an issue with audio in xbmc and in my great wisdom i did a reset to factory settings.
since then i can not register to amazon i believe because it can not accsses amazon site for verification. so im stuck in there.
i tried to SSH and through command line no device was recognized .
any assistance to this stupidity will be much appericiated
thanks yigo

Afraid I can't help you, but in light of preventing other people (and me) to have the same issues:
I assume the /etc/hosts file will survive factory-resets, it's a file that probably is not restored (so immediatly removed the host-lines from mine), but wonder if the pm disable dcp will also survice a reset ? I assume not (core funcationality for amazon, likely in factory-reset group), but you never know, esp. not in the v1 versions we are running.
Anybody knows if this is the case ? I like the pm disable solution, but if this means that borking up my installation will prevent me from ever restoring it (as unable to connect to amazon), I'll have to fall back to the router-blockage solution, and would suggest other ppl to do that as well
Deregistering AFTV may help with registration issue.
I had problems registering after factory reset.
I only disabled my amazon.dcp nad had dns and router blocks to prevent updates.
I did not edit my host file.
To de-register your Fire TV-
1 - log on to your amazon account
2 - Hold the mouse over where it says 'Your Account" but do not click. You will get a list of options.
3 - Click "Manage Your Content and Devices"
4 - Click the center tab "Your Devices"
5 - Click on your Fire TV.
6 - Click "Deregister" right below your Fire TV.
You will ge a message saying it there may be a delay for it to take effect.

So (while you need to de register the FTV itself within amazon), it looks like you can factory reset after disabling the amazon.dcp service.
Which is good news, as this allows easier disabling of update checks on machine level instead of router level (which not everybody will be able to do) and disabling the update service is better then overlooking a (hidden) fallback URL.
N=1 though, so'll have to wait if more confirmations come in, or somebody will be brave enough to try it

I read your other posting about update blocking.
Seems I did not have my amazon.dcp disabled.
I was not in SU mode when executing command and amazon.dcp was just killed not disabled.
Sorry for any confusion. Thanks

I hope one of the folks with a softbricked device gets a chance to see what happens with the over the air update file copied to a fat32 formatted USB stick and renamed update.zip.
With luck, at power on if there is media present, the stock recovery is looking to removable media to see if there's a file named update.zip it can process.
I don't want to softbrick mine to test, though.
So if I am understanding correctly, you should enable updates before you factory reset?

Stuck in Reboot Cycle on 6.3.3

I think I'm out of luck with this one, but hopefully someone can guide me a bit more and get me out of this mess. Long story short, I had cyanogen running on my original Kindle Fire. Decided to go back to stock to trade it in. It is currently running 6.3.3. However, I ended up leaving TWRP without doing a factory reset / wiping cache / etc. Now my Fire is stuck in a reboot loop where it boots and seems to work fine, but then it starts giving me errors about the kindle keyboard has stopped, acore has stopped, calendar storage has stopped and then it reboots. I've tried just about everything I've seen on these boards to get it working again, but I run into a wall regardless of which method I try.
I've tried quickly navigating to the settings and trying a factory reset around 100 times without any success.
I've tried using adb to factory reset without success.
I've tried using the kindle fire utility to grant root but it reboots too quickly to finish the script.
I have a fastboot cable and have followed many of the guides on this forum and nothing seems to be working.
I'm sure I'm missing some other stuff I've done, but my brain is just mush at this point with everything.
KFU does not root 6.3.3
KFU can't flash twrp/fff on 6.3.3
How to flash twrp and firefirefire with a Fastboot cable

I'm pretty sure I've followed that guide before and it wouldn't let me perform the flash. I don't know what is wrong now though. The factory cable is not even forcing it into fastboot at this point.

Seems to be around 75%. I'll try on another PC in the house to double check.

No luck on a different PC. Not sure what could have happened as I'm positive the cable was working before.

What worked for me was getting to TWRP and then ADB side loading the correct bootloader, TWRP, ROM & Gapps. Not 100% sure if it would work in your situation, but may be worth a try. Someone smarter than me will have to tell you of this is a bad idea, since I may have just gotten lucky...
