[Q] SDCARD file system damage issue - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I experienced following problems :
- flashed on my G3 (D855) Lollipop and after reboot, ADATA Premier Micro SDXC 64GB UHS-I got unreadable ... via Recovery software I got some of the data back, but big files were damaged (I thought it was related to Lollipop...)
- I flashed back to Cloudyfa 1.2 (can't live without XPOSED...), and experienced sudden restarts, while after the restart the sdcard was always unreadable... reformat always fixed it (using exFAT)
- so I thought that ADATA Premier Micro SDXC 64GB UHS-I is faulty and I will got it replaced under warranty
- but to be sure I put it into another device and it's working fine there since week !
- so I thought maybe there is some problem on LG G3, I purchased card Samsung Micro SDHC 32GB EVO Class 10 and guess what - again for a week so far running fine, without damage.... both cards are formatted under exFAT, I have tried to format ADATA it in the phone as well as in the computer....also performed quick and full format - no difference. Performing hard core test in the second device where the sdcard ADATA is still running fine - no issues (benchmarks, manually forced reboots etc.)
So what do you thing, where is the problem ? I can't explain it myself...

my phone did the same problem...
I found a solution. Connect you Sd card to you PC and delete the LG Backup... File it should work back

HTC Desire - SD card issues

from y'day.. sometimes i get the below message when i switch the phone
"phone could not able to backup data to SD card"...
The phone seems to lose access rights to the SD Card, so nothing is displayed in the file manager (estrong or Astor) The only way to fix this is to restart the phone.
in the phone settings-> SD scard option, I still have the option to unmount the SD card.. but then I don't know who to mount it back.. the only way i am able to fix it is by restarting the phone...
from y'day till now I got this problem for 3 times..
Anybody else having problems with this? please help..
Hi, I have the same issuses. It is very annoying, especially when taking photos. I tried reformat card, but it worked only for a week. I have got euro version, firmware 1.15.405.4. I hope HTC will solve this issue together with multitouch issues in next firmware.
I bought a 16Gb card and cannot get it to work in the Desire.
I've tested it in the PC, formatted it etc but it still won't work.
I'm not convinced where the fault lies, with the card or the Desire.
I had a problem once with sd+camera app, but after a reboot everything worked
funny enuff. that happened to me 2 yesterday ?

One of my 16GB cards also got corrupted. I found it did not slide into the SDHC card slot properly and did become dislodged. Check to see if the SD card is inerted correctly. My replacement 8GB seems fine.

I have 16 GB Kingston Class 2 in my Desire and no problem so far, quite cheap too.
I have had this a couple of times.
Install the SDMount Widget. Unmount the card in settings, click the widget, back in business.
I'm experiencing this issue about once a week... :/

This doesn't work. I have the same problem as described above. I just ordered a new 8gb SD Card. I hope it's an SD card problem and not something wrong with the phone
Thread with same discussion here if you wanna check it out.
I've also been having SD card issues since I got the phone but yesterday things got worse!
After the problem occured again, I thought I'd try removing and reinserting the SD card (despite having done this before). When I restarted the phone it came up with a this message on the notification bar:
Blank SD Card
SD card blank or has unsupported filesystem.
I've tried reformatting the card in the phone, with the phone attached to my comp via USB, and with the card in a card reader. None of this works; the computer just doesn't recognise the card.
I've just emailed HTC support with the problem. I'll report back when I get an answer.
Also 16GB issue
Since a few days I have issues with my 16GB card also. I tried to install Navigon on the card by copying files directly to the card. After inserting it into the phone two out of three directories were empty....
Trying to copy fromt the pc to the Desire using it as a disk drive gave me the blue screen of death
I tried to install it using the original 4GB card and everything works like a charm
I tested the 16GB card (forgot what tool, it was a 1 month trial without write testing) and the card came out fats enough and without any bad blocks.
I will do a write test this evening (EU time) to see if I can fit 16GB ont the card, but everything points to the phone at this moment

I've had exactly the same problem which I posted about in another thread. Do let us know if HTC get back to you
Same problem with my Desire and a Sandik 16 Gb Class 2...
The card works fine on my mp3 player, but it is not recognized by the phone. I'm going to contact HTC, too.
My Desire has complained twice now that my 16GB SD card is damaged and needs to be reformatted. But when I put it in my Nokia N97, it works fine. The last time I did a disk check in XP, and that took care of the problem for a while at least, but it seems strange that the problem appeared in the first place.
Having invested in a 16gb class 2 Kingston card for my desire I can tell you that it brings nothing but grief. I then purchased a 8gb class 6 pqi branded card and found it to be flawless in performance. One thing I noticed with the class 6 card is the very fast speed in copying to and from the card. Much faster than the Kingston class 2. On the class 6 card I have never had corruption of data or any problem. I see comments posted that the class makes no difference. In my experience it makes a huge difference.
you guys are having issues with your 8GB/16GB cards, i was considering getting a 32GB a few days from now, after reading all this i'm having second thoughts.. does size matter ? (pardon the pun)
I don't think the size of the card should matter, but then again - it just might. I was wondering if there's a slight possibility my card got corrupted from when I've had it connected to my computer in disk mode. I only use the "safe disconnection of hardware" button in XP, but I don't select to unmount it on the Desire - it shouldn't be a problem, but perhaps that's how it got broken. Or perhaps it's just damaged and glitchy
Make sure the MBR is formatted too. Windows does not do this by default. Search for a tool on the internet.

[Q] Repeated Failure of micro SD Cards

Is anybody else experiencing repeated failure of micro SD cards? EVO has been rooted and working great since last year. Suddenly, in February, my 32GB sd card failed on a reboot from flashing an early CM7 ROM. The Message is "SD Card blank or has unsupported filesystem." I called Sandisk and they sent out a replacement. Two weeks ago, same failure. Called Sandisk again and they are reluctantly sending another card (supposed to arrive today). In the meantime I was running with my 8GB that came with the phone. I just installed the stable CM7 release, restored data via clockwork and BOOM! SD card failure again. So, is anyone else getting this? Three SD cards in 2 months is kind of extreme. I'm trying to determine if it's the hardware, the ROM, or a series of bad cards (unlikely).
Some additional details:
All cards are Sanddisk
Recovery is ClockworkMod 3.0.0.5
HBOOT is 0.93.0000
Card is not readable via a card reader
its a bug with CM7
Thanks. I searched the forums, but was unable to find anything. Do you have a link to a discussion about it? Thanks.
sorry i dont have a link, it was some thing i read. a simple reboot was the suggestion and it worked for me also. good luck to you

I have had a similar problem with my 32 gb card.
Patriot card, Amon Ra 2.3, hboot 0.76, card worked in my laptop, and now is recognized in my phone, but Titanium backup will not recognize any app data elements
Delete the LOST.DIR on the sdcard while in recovery. Tends to fix it.
I posted this in one of the accessory threads, but it probably belongs in here.
------------------
I got a lexar 32gb class 10 microsd about a bit over a month ago. The first one worked great for about 3-4 weeks, then I started getting data corruption. Reformatted, copied data back, lasted 3 days. Now mind you, I always shut the phone down properly.
Rma'd it, got the replacement. Lasted all of 2 days before file corruption began again.
Lexar insisted I send my old one back before the send a replacement out. Fine. This ordeal took nearly 10 calendar days. During this time I had the stock sandisk 8gb class4 card. The data copied to the lexar is identical to that which was on the sandisk. Only difference is, I had no corruption what so ever with the sandisk.
Thus far, the conclusion i've drawn is that these bigger cards (or faster?) don't seem to work well as a virtual hard drive. They may be fine for storing pics or mp3s. However, the evo uses the sd card more so as random access read/write type storage, with the card constantly being updated by receipt of email, and other system programs/processes. Maybe this is what does the card in.
finally someone with the same problem as me...i thought i was the only one my 32gb card does the same was there a fix for it??
My 16GB Transcend card just died a couple of days ago. Sending it in today for replacement. I can access most folders from a USB card reader, but the larger folders can't be accessed.

This is actually very interesting. Earlier this morning I was thinking about App2SD and started looking into using it, and saw comments that peoples cards were getting nuked after using it (albeit only a few people). This kind of jives with the above quote... but take that sentiment with a grain of salt, admittedly I'm still an Android noob.
To those who are experiencing corrupted card issues, are you using App2SD?
Wrathx, I am set up with an ext3 partition using the dark tremor's a2sd scripts. I only have the apks on there however. The rest of the /data content (config files, databases, etc) is still on the phone's internal memory - for the same reasons above. I figured the internal memory is better (faster?) equipped to handle ever changing content. So in essence, once the apk is on the ext3 partition, it's accessed as a read only process.
My 8gb stock sandisk card is partitioned identically to the way the 32GB was, 32mb swap, 512 mb ext, and the remainder as /sdcard. It's also being used in the same way (only apps moved to it, no other content). Again, no issues what so ever with it.
Now, the the cache and dalvik cache are both set up to use the phone's internal /cache partition (for reasons above). I mention this because dt a2sd script gives you a number of options on how to set this up. Some people may have their cache and/or DC on the ext partition in addition to possibly having the actual /data content including settings on there as well.
so is there a fix r is everyone running into the problem getting a replacement???
When my SD card failed I took it out and put it in my husbands phone ( LG optimus) and let it power all the way on then took it out and put it back in my evo and it worked perfectly after that. It's a 32 gb sands....hope this helps

Just blew up card number 4. This one was a brand new SanDisk 32 GB. It failed when I powered up the phone. Just as a precaution I did not do anything out of the ordinary other than put some music on the phone. Did not transfer apps to SD. I'm going to restore to stock today and exchange the phone as a precaution. Since there is no clear evidence of the cause (even though it only started happening since switching to CM6/CM7) I may just go with straight stock root for now. I'll update if that causes any failures. I seems to only take a couple of weeks to get a failure so stay tuned.

has this worked for anyone? Once i reboot i just get 'blank sdcard.' this is the 3rd card that got hosed for me. all 16gigs. really wondering if its the hc cards, cm7, or just my phone.
My repeated failures turned out to be a bad slot on the phone. I would unroot the phone, restore stock, and exchange it. Since getting a replacement I have had no issues.

[Q] G2 Blank SD Card Error

G2 running Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 RC1
I updated from 7.0.?? a few days ago and today I got this message
"Blank SD Card. SD Card is blank or has unsupported file system." I have read quite a few posts on this issue but havent found a solution. I am using a non-stock 8gb card. Also tried this with a 16gb card and got the same error. Tried using a card reader but my computer (vista) gives no sign that a card is even present. Tried inserting my card into a friends sidekick 4g and got the same message. Wouldnt let me format on either phone. I am pulling my hair out! Please help and thanks.
UPDATE: My friends 8gb sd card from his sidekick 4g works fine in my phone but neither of my cards work. Is there an easy way to access my cards from my pc so i can format them?
I'm having this problem as well.
This is not just a suggestion, even though it seems fairly simple. I had the same issue with my Desire Z, and fixed it.
I took the microSD, put it into the phone.. Reboot the phone then go to Settings > Storage and "Erase SD Card" (I am assuming you don't have any valuable info in there.. if you do then back it up somehow.. This is only for free of memory cards).
After you erase it, even if you reboot it, the phone won't recognize it. So take the battery out/power off the phone, put it into the computer. If you're using a PC, go to the Removable Disk that is your microSD, right-click and Format it. Use Fat32, and just format it. (Maybe Quick Format will work, but I just did normal format, took 15 seconds).
After it's done, put it into your phone, boot it, and it should prepare your microSD for usage.
This worked for me, let me know if it does for you!
This issue just occurred on my G2 today at roughly 4:30 pm CDT. I've been running a Patriot 16 GB Class 10 microSD on this device since early April with no problems whatsoever. The other two G2 devices and one MyTouch4G we have are not experiencing the issue at this time.
Symptoms:
- The microSD card is no longer recognized by the G2 Android 2.2 device
- connecting the G2 to either my Windows or OS X notebooks no longer prompts me to enter USB Mode
- device sees the computer and computer(s) see the device after changing G2 to Development - USB debugging mode and connecting it to either the Windows or OS X notebooks
Corrective actions:
- soft reboot ==> no change
- power down - wait 5 mins - restart ==> no change
- power down - remove battery and microSD card - check microSD card contacts & phone contacts - replace microSD and battery - restart ==> no change
Before going into any more invasive or possibly destructive repair efforts, I came to XDA to see if my situation is a one-off or part of a larger pattern.
Appears that this isn't a unique problem.
I'm going to try the stock microSD 8 GB in the unit and will update this thread with results or additional actions.
Good times...
UPDATE: Problem corrected, at least for now.
- pulled the Patriot 16 GB class 10 microSD and used my Kingston MobileLite SD/microSD-to-USB adapter to backup the files from the card to my notebook
- formatted (NOT quick format) the microSD card as FAT32, 32KB allocation size, no volume label
- ran the full format process on the microSD card twice to minimize lingering "noise" on the card
- inserted the microSD into the G2, rebooted and allowed it to mount, fully prepare and download the configurations saved to Google
- confirmed the microSD had mounted and the G2 recognized the entire disk volume
- powered down the G2 gracefully
- pulled the microSD and reattached it to the notebook using the Kingston adapter
- used Unstoppable Copy v5.2 to transfer the 11.2 GB of backup files from the notebook to the microSD - no errors reported
- reinstalled the Patriot microSD in the G2 and powered up
Everything is functioning nominally, all data appears to be recovered. Tested the microSD with SD Tools and all the specs are reporting identically as they were before the incident with read & write performance well above Class 10 levels, (read:21.8 MB/s / write: 14.2 MB/s).
We'll see if the issue resurfaces.
As always, YMMV.
Well I have called HTC and they are sending me a new 8gb SD card on the condition that I ship the old one to them at my own expense. They also acknowledged their awareness of the problem and informed me that they have seen a number of devices burning out the cards. They told me to try the new card and if it happens again I will have to ship my phone in for repairs. I have stuck by HTC for years now, tilt, g1, inspire, g2, and never had a problem, but I feel that their solution, forcing me to pay for return shipping miniscule as it may be, is unacceptable. Im just lucky my phone was still under warranty.
The problem is that no device, my pc included, will recognize the card. It acts like the drive is empty. According to HTC the card is permanently fried but I dont think that is the case.
Wow this is worrying . . . . . I have alot of pics and music on my sdcard which i havnt backuped and wud be devasted if i lost!! Time for backup methinks

32gb microsd SDHC problem!!

Hi,
I bought a trancend 32gb microsd SDHC class4 card for the note about 10 days back..Worked fine for 2 days then suddenly stopped working...Stopped working means does not get detected in the phone or on the laptop (there is no option for mount/unmount on the phone)..Ive tried my older 8gb card on my phone and that works fine..Ive also tried the screwed up card on my blackberry bold and it doesnt detect there as well..
Well, i thought its the card's fault and ordered a replacement...
They sent one and same story again!! worked for 2 days and same thing again
Now i dont know if its the card's problem or my phone's..Anybody with any idea??
PS - i am rooted and on criskelo v11.2 with speedmod 3-13 if it matters...also both times i had about 15gb of data in the card...
ive also tried blowing and cleaning the contacts..also tried inserting a piece of paper in the slot to cancel out loose contacts but nothing works
Thanks..

Very strange problem , but I am facing the same problem with a Trancend 32 GB card replaced twice and worked only for 1 day and then stopped recognising , not sure if it makes a diff the Mobo was replaced by Service center about 4 months back ,, may be a mobo fault? but my 16GB card just works fine
same thing happened to me also ..... i replaced a new 32g card let me see if it works fine or i will never buy another 32gb trancend card
since both r indians ill talk in tat context
flipkart now says they wont replace anymore and will refund the amount as credit! He also adviced that sandisk works better on the note for this capacity..i dont know wat logic he had! please do update if u find a solution/alternate
@anirudh - which company is that 16gb from? maybe ill have to make do with 16gb since 32 doesnt work
32Gb micro SDHC class 4 by Transcend, not recognised by GT N7000
Hi All,
I'm using a GT N7000 on Official 4.1.2 XXLT5 (recently updated). I'm using a Transcend microsd 32gb class 4 for about a year now with this note. But I'm facing this issue of 'blank SD' and 'unable to format' from 2-3 months now after I updated to one of the official OS upgrade.
I've tried reverting back to all the earlier versions of Android where it worked fine, but there seems to be no change. I can read the card using an external card reader in my laptop, but not through the phone.
I've tried formatting it to all the possible types (NTFS, exFAT, FAT32), nothing seems to work, for the note. I can read it on PC though.
I tried reading the same card in another device, but now it's not readable in that as well. Any suggestion/solution, much appreciated.
Thanks

Boot into recovery mode and go to mounts and storage. From there format the external memory card (format /sdcard). Alternatively you could try with a format from the "storage" in settings.
Use the card reader with ur pc. Go to disk management and format the card FAT32. Before formating, delete the partition/partitions on ur card. U should get unallocated space. Create partition and it should work. The big problem is that u may see some problems between note and 32gb card. The phone it may restart and u should go to recovery/download mode to restart it... good luck.

64gb micro SD problems

I'm running Jasminerom 4.0 and I cannot get 64gb micro sd cards to work properly on my VS985. If I format via settings, it defaults to exfat. Performance suffers and I seem to get random corruption of files. I've tried formatting to fat32 via TWRP and via Windows. Performance is better for a bit, but in time the phone starts not writing to the card for some reason. I've tried 2 different cards, Samsung evo and SanDisk ultra. I'm currently using a 32gb SanDisk ultra which works as it should.
Any others have this problem with 64gb cards?

Yes i have this problem too. I somehow semi-repaired files corruption by formating the 64GB card with Easues partition manager. Format it with this program as FAT32 and see if it helps.
Thanks I'll try that and let you know how I make out.
Using a 32gb card is an ok workaround but this problem really bugs me. I'm hoping the lollipop update might fix this issue. We'll see...

Like mentioned above, formatting your card to 2x fat32 partitions should fix it. The problem is with exFAT. I doesn't see it as a removable memory and ends up getting corrupted, sometimes, a reboot will fix it but after a while, it needs a fresh format.
I'm thinking the problem is with the kernel as stock didn't give me issues, could be wrong though. I know CM broke it last week so ROM that are base off it would have it broken as well but could be fixed by now.
I used Easeus to format to fat32. The card worked great this weekend.
This morning I checked for some files and several entire directories had been deleted. Looks like I'm having the same issues as before, and I really don't know what is triggering it. I'll stick with my 32gb card for now.
has anyone found a solution for this I've bought several different top of the line cards, anything over 32gb stuff gets corrupt.
appreciate any help, thanks in advance
