[Q] Lollipop - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone have any new info on us getting Lollipop? Info on Google is slim.

My guess is spring or summer time. If we see any leaks then that means it should come a month or two after the leak. Its just a guessing game for samsung

Samsung S5 has just started receiving the lollipop update. So hopefully our Tab S gets it very soon.

When we start seeing exynos variants getting 5.0 we know we will be getting closer.

I recently read (sorry can not remember where) that because the Tab S was such a low seller that Samsung may not bother. I was not aware it was a low seller.

I don't know about sales figures but I've read quotes from Samsung in various articles stating the the Tab S was a high priority to get an early update. After all, It is still their flagship tablet at the moment.

Phones are very different from tablets. Orders of magnitude difference in units sold.

this is one area I find VERY VERY frustrating with Android
I find the way IOS OS updates are released far more satisfying. By the time we get Lollipop (I have a Note 3 and Tab S 10.5) - it'll prob be old hat. I'm also fed up with having apps now that look, feel etc like Lollipop and a core OS that does not.
we have 2 IPADs as well in the family in case you wonder about my IOS comment - it gets released - everyone (just about) can download and install it - great

My point being too that was that, Samsung have released the final version of their lollipop update. So in terms of major software tweaks, that's done . If that makes sense lol

That's true. But I'd rather have an update that improves my device rather than slowing it down.

Honestly I think ios users have the opposite problem . Apple keeps trying to update their old devices to the latest ios. The iPad 2 has no business running ios 8. Making ios 8 run on old devices just make them slow and piss people off and then they accuse Apple of making their device slow on purpose to force them to upgrade. Of course if Apple does not support old hardware then it's "abandoning" them.
But yeah no excuse for not having lollipop on the flag ship device already . It's not like Google just dropped lollipop on people out of the blue. you had betas and previews. If cyanogenmod, which as far as I know is not a multi billion dollar conglomerate, can support a bunch of devices then so can Samsung.

I do also have note 3 and tab s. I installed the leaked lolipop for note 3 and I can say that lolipop is worth waiting a few more months. It's nice, clean, works well. Maybe lolipop will resolve some of our problems with tab s. My guess is that will be no lolipop update till begening of march for the tab S because we do jot have any leaked firmware for exynox yet.

I hope it never gets it. Lolly pop ruined my nexus 10, broke WiFi and sent me shopping for a new tablet. Loving my tab s running 4.4.

2 q 2015
according to this article 2 quarter 2015
://technosamigos.com/samsung-android-5-0-lollipop-update/

Hopefully xposed will become working on art before getting lollipop :good:
regards

LTE edition is on Q2, means after April, this is long wait!
By the way, I am waiting for my Note 4 as well.
What to do, just wait wait wait...

Our tablets still work fine, and the rest of the community can catch up, so let's not be so first world about it.

Goog news for Tab S Owners? Reliable source?
Acording to jbgnews, which I had never heard about BTW, lollipop is arriving for Tab S in the next few days or weeks.
i don't know nothing about the source, but I thought I'd post it anyway.
I don´t post the link 'cause I don't have 10 posts yet. So I can't

I noticed this on Sprint's RDF feed for their devices:
Code:
<prf:SoftwareNumber>T217SVPUBNC9</prf:SoftwareNumber>
<prf: OSVersion>4.4.2</prf: OSVersion>
So it appears that the T217S will get 4.4 in the next couple of months.
I think only u.s version will get kitkat

For me it's been a while away from the non iphone scene, I happened to wonder if I could upgrade my Tab3 7" today and was reading plenty of news about it being available soon (from articles posted in February). A quick poke around and it seems that it's not released yet and I figure I may as well ask since I don't know.
What's the release schedule around these things usually like? IE how long from "announced" to actually available?
Is the firmware for Tab devices geo-specific? IE is the Australian launch different to the US etc?
(I understand for the phones it's likely to be very carrier dependant)
I think that's all for now.

If you have a Sprint Tab 3 7.0, then expect an update somewhere between now and two months. That is just a guess but that is how firmware for my Galaxy S3 has worked. Sprint updates the RDF feed and then about two months later it gets released.
For other Tab 3's, no idea.

Samsung is notorious for being one of the worst manufactures out there when it comes to updating their budget products. I wouldn't hold my breath on a April release, I expect the Tab 4 to be available for purchase before you'll see it. The Tab 3 7" will also probably be the last one to get it and will most likely be the last major update you will ever get, I would bet money on it. I'm actually surprised Samsung is even updating the Tab 3 7" as their track record for releasing new Android versions for their cheaper models is not good. Yes, the update is carrier specific for the LTE models and won't see the light of day for at least a month or two after the WiFi models are updated, if at all.
In the future I would stay away from Samsung's budget line, it's already been a year since version 4.3 was released without it ever reaching the Tab 3 line and now almost 6 months and counting for 4.4.2.
To be fair I only got this device to run torque pro in the car (which is does just fine). As an appliance it's great! Now I'm just tinkering because I'm bored
Although I'm also temped to trade in the iPhone for an android based phone and while I understand it's low powered this was going to be a taste of the new OS I'd be getting.
i bought tab 3 2100 since i needed a 7 inch tab with phone capability, my first choice was any google tab but there is no phone capability in them so therefore i bought it.. and i think Samsung wont give kitkat update unless they release tab 4 with kitkat ... this is their way of making money !

Cos the idea we'll get Android 5.0 on the Note 10.1 2014 is a load of fragrant hot air?
Now waiting for 4.4.4..
Come on Samsung, don't keep us waiting.
4.4.3 is just a very minor bug fixing update from 4.4.2. At least we got Kit kat with an updated Samsung skin on top as well. That's honestly a much bigger deal than getting 4.4.3. Now all we need is a stellar ROM packed with some nice tweaks and features. The upcoming Hyperdrive ROM by Sbreen looks to be it.
They'll probably skip 4.4.4 and just go to 5.0.2 in December. Hopefully there's a maintenance update to fix the video bugs in 4.4.2.
Why shouldn't we expect Updates
>>By samsung-policy wise, galaxy note will be out of its 18 month support period so no 4.4.3
Why shouldn't we expect updates. If I buy a laptop with windows I get updates (in the case of my old xp machine for over 10 years) granted my hp or dell support has long since lapsed but I can still update the operating system for bug fixes and enhancements ect..
If I buy an iPad I get updates in the case of my wife for over 4 years now.
So My question is why should Samsung or the android tablet market function any differently?

Iphone 3GS/4/4S and Ipad 2//3 did get updates to iOS6/7, probably iOS8/iOS9 too.
Did all these got all new features and works flawless with new updates? Siri was left out on IP4.
Go google on how it worked and u got u answer.
Samsung, like almost all manufacturers, for almost all devices, uses to provide a single major update, and that was Kitkat. LG seems to be special. They can manage to provide two dozen "micro updates", seemingly only fixing baseband issues affecting operation with certain providers in certain countries. No fix list, but that was the purpose of Nokia updates in the past.
My LG L9 got an update from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 one and a half years ago, from v10x to version v20a. This went up to v20p since, and there was never the slightest noticeable difference. Even a small wifi bug remains present since v20a.

We'll still be well within the typical 18 month support/upgrade window, but unfortunately nothing is really a given. Hopefully by then we'll have a slew of ROMs available to ease the pain if we don't receive the Android L release.
Most likely we will get it well AFTER the new wave of tablets that launch with the new OS.

I still remember the pain the last time I was on a Samsung AMOLED tablet.
And the current batch being Exynos based, you can stop dreaming about those roms.
My hope is that we get the Android L. . Isn't the OS name suppose to change? When the release is actually official?
Typically the name changes.
Licorice? Lol
I wouldn't put any hope on Samsung for the updates because as soon as CM releases a rom for this I would say goodbye to the stock rom, and based on that the chance is very very high that the device gets Android L.

It will get L, pretty sure about that. But anything after that is a crapshoot.
And CM rarely appears on Exynos based devices these days - Nexus exempted. Better don't put too much hope on that.

Yeah, mine was the P6800 too, I'm gonna miss it!
At this point I'd be happy with just a debloated rom and overclockable kernel based on the 800 firmware Comparing the Pro thread to this one pretty clear the significant devs already own the Pro model and won't be buying this one.
Not sure how hard it would be to port the Pro 10.1 roms to the S 10.5. I believe same processor and bluetooth. Seems possible on the surface. Maybe we need to go to the Pro thread and start begging the Devs in some PM's?

Who knows? We don't even know if our devices will get an official 4.4.4 let alone 5.0.
Samsung won't ever give you confirmation of something like an upcoming update as usually their support desks seem to know so little that you may as well ask the man in the moon.

I wouldn't give up hope just yet (Lollipop hasn't been out for long), but neither would I be holding my breath for an update either.....
Samsung has to integrate TouchWiz and do a lot of quality testing , if they released an unstable or unsecured release of Lollipop it would cause more problems and customers as they have a reputation to keep, if you look at Samsungs line of products maybe only one or two products actually have Lollipop, as they are probably slowly testing feedback and bugreports, if they just recklessly just throw an update to every-device it would cause havoc
If I had to guess I would say sometime next year (probably within the first 3-4 months) this tablet will get a update.

This is what they should be doing, but if you look at this years 4.3 Jellybean release for Galaxy S3 they appeared to have done none of it. Also, just read this morning that the Note 4 will skip straight to 5.0.1 - so they're probably not going to waste much time porting many more snapdragon devices to 5.0, which could mean an even longer delay.
Please excuse my cynicism, I've been a Samsung customer for too long....

I'm guessing May or June of 2015 for Android 5.x and that will be the last update. I really hope they get Lollipop on the Note 10.1 2014, which is more important to me than my tab pro 8.4.

Say what?
Where did i say that one was dependent on getting the other?
By my logic Samsung haven't confirmed one or the other - not the next incremental revision, let alone the next version.
From past experience they are unlikely to respond fully to enquiries about what updates are due and remain very non commital at the best of times.
pretty straight forward to understand......

Samsung Lollipop update uncertainties
I was about to buy a Galaxy Tab Pro (3 actually) but this whole Lollipop update thing has given me cold feet. I'm going to stick with iPads. I just don't like the feeling they're withholding OS updates in order to drive new (Galaxy Tab S2) hardware sales. I always felt that was happening with Windows and PC hardware vendors and I ended up buying a Mac because of it (and never looked back).
Good luck guys and may all your Lollipops be as fruity as an Apple.

I work for a Google school and I think that's just about the biggest vote of platform confidence anyone can give. We do need at least one new Android tablet to test Appinventor Apps and we will buy. However, KitKat has been a frustration. Not being able to capture direct to MicroSD for example is unforgivable in the modern OS era. Lollipop promises to fix a great many KitKat issues and I think the HARDWARE partners like Samsung have a responsibility to get the customer base past KitKat ASAP.
I do not know what you mean when you say: "Apple holds update releases". But if you are suggesting that Apple only applies software updates to ONE generation of hardware you are totally wrong. I have an iPad 2 which has now had 5 different iOS iterations from iOS4 to iOS8 and is now possibly 3x better than the already excellent device I originally purchased. I've never had to even wait extra time because it's an older device. I want this for Android as well! and I reserve the right to put as much pressure as I can to make the hardware vendors give it to us. Let's not forget the damage platform fragmentation does to the Android developer community. It's in the best long-term interests of all hardware partners to keep as many of us as possible on the newest version of Android but they are not walking the walk. We need to encourage them.
My intentions are good, peace out.

Funny that I can't update my GFs macbook past osx 10.7 because 'it's too old' when it more than meets requirements.
No need to shill here.

Well, the youngest that MacBook could possibly be is October 2008! Unfortunately it's a 32bit machine which is just a different technology generation. It is a bit of bad luck though. I have a MacBook Pro from Mid 2007 that's running the very latest Yosemite OS just fine. It's pretty amazing when an 8 year old computer just keeps getting better and better for free. AND THAT'S EXACTLY THE WAY IT SHOULD BE. Screenshots of the system profile can be posted if you have doubts.
I don't know why people are trying to argue this, it's a simple fact that Apple are just better in updates than Samsung will ever be. The main reason for it is that it's easy for Apple to support since they make their own hardware and software that doesn't run on thousands of devices like Android. Samsung should still try to do a better job at updating. I don't like how they didn't even say whether the Tab Pros will get Lollipop or not, even though they were released only a few months before the Tab Ss (which did get Lollipop) and are just as powerful (they use the same chips).
Regardless I myself am gonna flash CM12 on my Pro 8.4 because I don't know if Samsung ever intend on giving us the update we deserve and regardless I am tired of TouchWiz.
Well one thing Android will have that Apple never will, is Android IS OPEN SOURCE and also Samsung is pretty good in releasing the source code for its products and kernels, meaning even if they don't release an update for a specific device it can still be supported by 3rd party firmwares or if you want to compile it yourself. - let's see someone do that with Apple.

You don't think Apple has IOS 8 or 9 in the works? if it was Open Source like Android then Apple users would be doing the same thing begging for the update, but since Apple is closed source you don't hear about it until they tell you.
2 Cents
Also I still think the Tab Pro series will still get an update , I think Samsung owes at least one major version update being it was released at nearly the same time as the Tab S - I am suspecting it will be next in line for the lollipop update - considering its the Pro series line it might need more security and testing then the S series does.
lollipop update for tab pro.

I Not being able to capture direct to MicroSD for example is unforgivable in the modern OS era. Lollipop promises to fix a great many KitKat issues and I think the HARDWARE partners like Samsung have a responsibility to get the customer base past KitKat ASAP.

3rd party apps not being able to write to the SD card is a deliberate security decision. However, it is easily overridden by an app from the Play Store. Search for "sdfix". BTW, it is also needed in lollipop so waiting for 5.1.1 won't help.

Nougat

Google has announced the releasing of nougat. Will it come to our N920A?
Probably not since the note 7 is out, we got lucky to get marshmallow.

Still hope nougat will hit us, and for root access as well, as i just upgrade my note5 to the latest MM , BPG1.. In this case i really disappointed to myself, why i upgrade it, as i live not in the US region, because i read in other thread, you said there's root access for our note 5 but only for 5.1.1 although it's still pain in the ass..

Full root on lollipop was a huge luck strike. Root for marshmallow if ever will take a while if at all and if N comes even longer. Best to just stay away from AT&T phones for good, I'm moving to international Note 7 once released for octa version and root.

Marshmallow? My AT&T Note 5 is still on lollipop 5.1.1. I check for updates all the time and it always says I'm on the latest version.

We were not "lucky" to get MM on the Note 5, Samsung has had no issue supporting the Note 5 and S6 series with MM since they were flagship phones. If you look at the history of Samsung's support for the previous gen phones, I'm confident they will support N for the Note 5 and S6 series unless something comes up that's significant enough for them of all companies to say no. I'd say you have a reasonable expectation to see N on the now previous gen Samsung's. I love my S7 edge though

If we get Android N it will probly be Aug or Sept of 2017 Samsung will drag its feet and AT&T will really take it's sweet time releasing it
It's not Samsung you have to be worried about, it's AT&T not finding and releasing.
Agreed, Samsung has even committed to providing the monthly security updates to the providers as soon as possible, and even AT&T has been a bit quicker in releasing those. Granted security patches are pretty easy to scan over and verify they won't screw with the AT&T side of things, but a whole new OS upgrade is definitely another story for carriers so they don't brick phones or cause software glitches because of their modifications to the firmware. Thats one thing I do like about Apple, no carrier specific software, they need to do that with Android, since pretty much all of the carrier apps are on the Play Store, and if they aren't well, I say f you to the carriers and their garbage modifications anyways, hence why I flashed the unlocked firmware to my S7 edge.
And beta avalible in Korea

Go to best buy and have the Samsung associate update your phone to 6.0. Did mine yesterday and couldn't be happier. My note 5 is more snappier and responsive
