Nougat - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note5

Google has announced the releasing of nougat. Will it come to our N920A?

Probably not since the note 7 is out, we got lucky to get marshmallow.

Yea, i know.. maybe we'll get two times lucky.. like my phone before this, xperia z1, still on jellybean when i first bought it, never been dreaming it would be upgraded more than kitkat, and now, it's running lollipop 5.1.1..

Still hope nougat will hit us, and for root access as well, as i just upgrade my note5 to the latest MM , BPG1.. In this case i really disappointed to myself, why i upgrade it, as i live not in the US region, because i read in other thread, you said there's root access for our note 5 but only for 5.1.1 although it's still pain in the ass..

Full root on lollipop was a huge luck strike. Root for marshmallow if ever will take a while if at all and if N comes even longer. Best to just stay away from AT&T phones for good, I'm moving to international Note 7 once released for octa version and root.

And Note7 Sprint version was already had root acces.. long live at&t..

If we drop a candy bar on our Note 5, we might get some Nougat on it.

We were not "lucky" to get MM on the Note 5, Samsung has had no issue supporting the Note 5 and S6 series with MM since they were flagship phones. If you look at the history of Samsung's support for the previous gen phones, I'm confident they will support N for the Note 5 and S6 series unless something comes up that's significant enough for them of all companies to say no. I'd say you have a reasonable expectation to see N on the now previous gen Samsung's. I love my S7 edge though

If we get Android N it will probly be Aug or Sept of 2017 Samsung will drag its feet and AT&T will really take it's sweet time releasing it

It's not Samsung you have to be worried about, it's AT&T not finding and releasing.

Agreed, Samsung has even committed to providing the monthly security updates to the providers as soon as possible, and even AT&T has been a bit quicker in releasing those. Granted security patches are pretty easy to scan over and verify they won't screw with the AT&T side of things, but a whole new OS upgrade is definitely another story for carriers so they don't brick phones or cause software glitches because of their modifications to the firmware. Thats one thing I do like about Apple, no carrier specific software, they need to do that with Android, since pretty much all of the carrier apps are on the Play Store, and if they aren't well, I say f you to the carriers and their garbage modifications anyways, hence why I flashed the unlocked firmware to my S7 edge.

And beta avalible in Korea

Cos the idea we'll get Android 5.0 on the Note 10.1 2014 is a load of fragrant hot air?
Now waiting for 4.4.4..
Come on Samsung, don't keep us waiting.
4.4.3 is just a very minor bug fixing update from 4.4.2. At least we got Kit kat with an updated Samsung skin on top as well. That's honestly a much bigger deal than getting 4.4.3. Now all we need is a stellar ROM packed with some nice tweaks and features. The upcoming Hyperdrive ROM by Sbreen looks to be it.
They'll probably skip 4.4.4 and just go to 5.0.2 in December. Hopefully there's a maintenance update to fix the video bugs in 4.4.2.
Why shouldn't we expect Updates
>>By samsung-policy wise, galaxy note will be out of its 18 month support period so no 4.4.3
Why shouldn't we expect updates. If I buy a laptop with windows I get updates (in the case of my old xp machine for over 10 years) granted my hp or dell support has long since lapsed but I can still update the operating system for bug fixes and enhancements ect..
If I buy an iPad I get updates in the case of my wife for over 4 years now.
So My question is why should Samsung or the android tablet market function any differently?

Iphone 3GS/4/4S and Ipad 2//3 did get updates to iOS6/7, probably iOS8/iOS9 too.
Did all these got all new features and works flawless with new updates? Siri was left out on IP4.
Go google on how it worked and u got u answer.
Samsung, like almost all manufacturers, for almost all devices, uses to provide a single major update, and that was Kitkat. LG seems to be special. They can manage to provide two dozen "micro updates", seemingly only fixing baseband issues affecting operation with certain providers in certain countries. No fix list, but that was the purpose of Nokia updates in the past.
My LG L9 got an update from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 one and a half years ago, from v10x to version v20a. This went up to v20p since, and there was never the slightest noticeable difference. Even a small wifi bug remains present since v20a.

[Q] Lollipop

Anyone have any new info on us getting Lollipop? Info on Google is slim.
My guess is spring or summer time. If we see any leaks then that means it should come a month or two after the leak. Its just a guessing game for samsung
Samsung S5 has just started receiving the lollipop update. So hopefully our Tab S gets it very soon.

When we start seeing exynos variants getting 5.0 we know we will be getting closer.
I recently read (sorry can not remember where) that because the Tab S was such a low seller that Samsung may not bother. I was not aware it was a low seller.

Phones are very different from tablets. Orders of magnitude difference in units sold.
this is one area I find VERY VERY frustrating with Android
I find the way IOS OS updates are released far more satisfying. By the time we get Lollipop (I have a Note 3 and Tab S 10.5) - it'll prob be old hat. I'm also fed up with having apps now that look, feel etc like Lollipop and a core OS that does not.
we have 2 IPADs as well in the family in case you wonder about my IOS comment - it gets released - everyone (just about) can download and install it - great

Honestly I think ios users have the opposite problem . Apple keeps trying to update their old devices to the latest ios. The iPad 2 has no business running ios 8. Making ios 8 run on old devices just make them slow and piss people off and then they accuse Apple of making their device slow on purpose to force them to upgrade. Of course if Apple does not support old hardware then it's "abandoning" them.
But yeah no excuse for not having lollipop on the flag ship device already . It's not like Google just dropped lollipop on people out of the blue. you had betas and previews. If cyanogenmod, which as far as I know is not a multi billion dollar conglomerate, can support a bunch of devices then so can Samsung.

I do also have note 3 and tab s. I installed the leaked lolipop for note 3 and I can say that lolipop is worth waiting a few more months. It's nice, clean, works well. Maybe lolipop will resolve some of our problems with tab s. My guess is that will be no lolipop update till begening of march for the tab S because we do jot have any leaked firmware for exynox yet.
I hope it never gets it. Lolly pop ruined my nexus 10, broke WiFi and sent me shopping for a new tablet. Loving my tab s running 4.4.

Developer Edition and Updates

Thinking about selling my retail note 4 and buying a developer edition. Once lollipop is out will Samsung start shipping the dev editions with lollipop pre-installed? I'm hesitant to go with the dev edition as it seems like a lollipop upgrade may never happen.
That's actually pretty good question. Most people would say no you never get updates etc etc but the developer edition is available online now and if lollipop update happens soon I don't know?
Right. All I really want is to run a stock rom with root but since there isn't a very active dev community for the Note 4 I'm skeptical if lollipop will ever come in that form.

No one really knows the answer to your question, will Samsung ship Developer Edition Note 4's after Lollipop has been released by Samsung. Who knows how long or when Samsung will have a version of Lollipop for the Note 4? There are some schools of thought that Lollipop may not be able to be rooted, Developer Edition or retail version. So, who knows?
I personally maintain this: I really don't care if Lollipop is released for the Note 4. I have a Nexus tablet with Lollipop on it and am not impressed at all with Lollipop. My Note 4 is rooted with TWRP and self debloated, running Nova Launcher and a few apps requiring root like Xposed and Wanan and I don't think there is a phone on the market, with or without Lollipop, that has better battery life, runs smoother or faster, has better connectivity or has a better display. When you add in the S-Pen features, you can't beat the Note 4 and I don't think Lollipop is going to make the Note 4 better. Just my opinion.
Jpcalhoun said it best.. There is a bit of me that wants that lollipop but then again im so happy where my DE is now. If it ain't dont fix it really comes to. Mind.
Update Question
I might be totally off base here, but I thought it was just a question of getting the OTA update from a non-DE Note 4 and modifying it slightly so it doesn't overwrite your bootloader with a retail version.

my bet would be yes. i have two note 4 devs and one has an1 on it from sammy and the newest has nj5 on it so they are updating them and still making them the latest. also im sure if the retail note gets it there will be a stock tar that use dev guys can use to make our dev ed a lollipop device and i am not sure about lollipop either without xposed. i have used several nexus 6 and lollipop is stupid fast and smooth but i still need xposed and dont mind tw at all so we shall see

Well, I'm convinced... Off to go ebay my retail n4. Anybody done this and can report on how much they got for it? Sale prices are strangely all over the map on ebay. I can't really figure out what is causing some to sell for $500 and others for $650. Mine is in great condition. I'm expecting $600. Thoughts?

That would be correct. The challenge is having a developer, or someone who knows what he's doing, to do it. From my experience that updated version of Android, in this case kitkat to lollipop, usually comes to us in the form of a ROM flashable through recovery. But it doesn't necessarily have to be that way I guess. I assume you could take the factory .tar, modify it and use ODIN to install.
Either way, I have a line on clean copies of the updates. Guy down the hall from me has a retail VZW Note 4. Asked him to download, but not install, then bring the phone to me to pull the file from cache

Welcome to Marshmallow

Looks like we are one step closer to marshmallow. The T-Mobile website now shows the phone in T-Mobile testing phase.
Update: Download some marshmallows now.
Taking them way too long. Verizon already is pushing out Marshmallow for the Note. They are usually the last carrier. I'm disappointed with development from this phone.
you sure about that? to me it still shows that it is under manufacturer development
Maybe we'll see it in April
Telus may rollout Marshmallow at March 30th for s6 edge. what about t-mobile
I believe tmobile has always been the slowest in releasing updates. ..don't be surprised either April or May timeframe
I couldn't help it. I used JUMP to get the S7 Edge. In Reality it's exactly what I wanted the S6 Edge to be. I really have zero complaints about the S6 Edge. I'll miss seeing how it handles marshmallow. I think it'll fit it well.
Can't blame you. ..I'm thinking of upgrading myself. ..this update is taking to long

It is kind of hilarious we are now reading Android N developer preview stuff, seeing lowly Sprint rolling out updates to M and we are reading that it's still in a development phase as far as TMobile goes. I not one that thinks M is going to be that great we absolutely need to have it Android. I'm more disappointed I have been a long time Tmobile customer, and going from my first Android, my beloved Nexus One that was put at by Google at the time, to switching over to Samsung and basically being the good little follower/updater of every TOL device they put out prior to my current S6Edge which I obtained on the first day of availability last April 2015 and my wifes Note5 I recently updated her to from her Note 3. TMobile used to be known as the leader of the pack supporting their USA customer base.
Lastly, in the past up thru the latest 5.1.1 updates, it was really easy to flash an International version, use a Kerenel that played happy with TMobile hardware, and occasionally requiring an additional flash of a file to fix call audio issues and we all were golden. I'm guessing that once a TMobile supported Android M Bootloader is available, we can then happily start flashing away the many International Android M ROMs already being posted on those Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge sites.
I could be wrong on that, but I really thing once we have a bootloader posted we can all go back to complaining about this or that specific ROM issues, instead of pounding the web sites for Tmobile to get it's act in gear. Really....Sprint ahead of Tmobile....scratching my head
Sprint rolls out their updates first when business is mediocre.
Still waiting for M. This is why I dont buy Tmo S7.
Im start hate samsung, so many versions for the same cellphone or watch, I never want say this but with iphone dont happen thinks like that..
Well, finally it's showing on T-Mobile's page that it is in testing phase.

And yes Alex9090 seems like I made a mistake when I started this thread, maybe my excitement got to me. But its in T-Mobile Testing phase now.
KingP1n I don't see Samsung changing their ways anytime soon. They are trying to use touchwiz in a way to make money from it. But the end result is always the same it takes too many resources away from the base OS and the whole experience feels like riding on the short bus.
This is my last Sammie phone anyway... I've been pretty disappointed in it and should have waited to buy it - always out to be the early adopter.. i need to knock that crap off..
Having to wait for hell to freeze over before getting the update just hammers it all home...
The worst part is that this will most likely be the last update this phone will get.
Imagine next year we will be where S5 owners are now last to get if ever get Android N

This morning I got a message from Verizon advertising two new (to Verizon anyway) models, a LG k20(no misprint) and a Samsung galaxy j7 (wtf are these things lol) they are actually economy models of both manufacturers which really isn't important. What is important is both boasted nougat api. I'm wondering if it would be possible to get tw nougat port for the note 4 . if its being launched on there 99$ phone it must be out for the flagships.
Supposedly there's a rumor of a nougat update in the works for the note 4. Whether it's just a test build and if it'll ever see the light of day is up for speculation, but we might get lucky and get our hands on a leak. The note 5 is set to receive nougat though so that's probably our best bet for a TW nougat option.

I hope you're right and just based on the fact that they had to recall the Note 7, I hope they'd throw us a bone and develop 7.1/7.1.2 for us I could understand if they didn't go further than THAT (i.e. Android 8). I mean, us Note 4 users didn't have any real update options for current year models on the Galaxy Note line when our 2 years was up. I wonder if somehow getting a petition going would help at all, but who knows how many Note 4's are still out there in use. My mom also has one, I've got at least one coworker that had one, I'm not sure if she still does or not.

We may also have hope with ported S7 nougat ROMs as well.
I doubt a petition would do much good though, Samsung would look at it and go "lol, cute". I agree that we should at least get nougat though. I work at a VZW dealer and I still see a decent amount of Note 4s in use, so it's by no means a dead device. I tend to sort of 'bond' with the N4 users that come into my store and even though I'm obligated to try to get them to upgrade, they always say stuff like "I don't want a new phone, there's nothing out there that does everything this one does!". Makes me happy every time
