Kernel sources for the first generation Zenfones have been out for a long time. There have been AOSP builds already but I don't think they're stable enough, not much developer support here..

Do you see yourself using the Galaxy Nexus for another year?

I have been using the HTC Sensation for a year now. I'm thinking of getting a new phone to use for at least a year. The Galaxy Nexus seems to have the best price to performance ratio right now. And I love the great support it gets from Google. If you're in my position, would you get the Galaxy Nexus?? Do you see yourself using the Galaxy Nexus for another year? Why?
Definitely, but then again I keep my phones until they die. My gnexus is my second smart phone, moto droid being first. Does what it needs to, it's quick, and lot of mods for it.
Yes, but if you dont have the takju or yakju build, you should flash to them 4.0.4
Hope I helped

Nope. I buy all the Nexus phones when they come out and sell the old one.
Galaxy Nexus GSM
Since I won't be upgrading anymore to keep unlimited data I will be keeping mine regardless of what I buy next. It's paid for and I don't want the feeling of desperation If I need a replacement.

I too had the HTC Sensation. I just recently got the Gnex (GSM) and i am planning on keeping for atleast 2yrs. Even if the next Gnex comes out i don't think i will get it.
PS: Never getting any other phone UNLESS it is a nexus.
I never use to be someone that would waste so much money on phones every year but I find myself buying every Nexus that comes out every year.
I would probably keep the Galaxy Nexus for longer if my screen didn't have terrible stock whites (they are yellow) and terrible banding and gradient issues. All of these screen issues pretty much force me to use black colored themes which are nice, but is severely limiting.
For example, with JB and the lack of themes for it, it pains me to look at the stock screen/color settings on my phone. I don't think a phone should require 3rd party intervention to this degree.
Thus, when I buy the Nexus 4, I'm gonna make sure that it's a winner. I am absolutely enjoying my time with the Galaxy Nexus but I will not go through this annoyance again. Therefore, I'm moving onto the next Nexus ASAP.

Have you tried flashing another kernel like francokernel and tweaking the color multipliers and gamma settings? (I personally don't understand that stuff, but I've played with it a bit to get my whites whiter).

Ill probably stick with it. I feel guilty going from Nexus S to Galaxy Nexus already but it was so worth it ... except the part where the price just keeps going down (~700 to $399 to $349.99)
... depends on how much the Nexus 4 price is.

Oh I definitely tweak the colors using a custom kernel. Wouldn't be able to live without it.
My point is, however, that it reliance on a custom kernel and inverted Gapps shouldn't be necessary for my phone to look normal.
Right now I'm on JB and would love to stick to the stock kernel for performance and battery life but I'm forced onto Franco kernel for the color tweaks. That's the kind of limitations I'm talking about. This shouldn't be so.

Oh...hm are you sure Google would send a refurb rather than a new device? When did you buy it? Usually refurbs are used only if the device is an older model...though that's through carriers, who knows what Google will do.
I just found that Google actually has phone support for Nexus devices. If you head to www.google.com/nexus and follow the support link. They might be able to help you get a new device.
I'm keeping it. Love the phone, unless the next Nexus is a huge step up then I will not bother upgrading... we'll definitely be getting upgraded to whatever the next Nexus ships with so I'll be happy with this for a long time.

[Q] Worth Upgrading?

I currently own Nexus One and i was planning on upgrading because its a grandfather in android family My question is
1. Whether Galaxy Nexus is worth upgrading or should I look for some other phone?
2. What are the known issues with this phone? With nexus one, there were issues with the touch in lower part of the screen, initial 3g issues, touching capacitive buttons on the top half portion :crying:
3. Hows the build quality and battery life?

Wait for the new LG Nexus reveal and pricing at the end of the month before deciding. Who knows how it will turn out but it could be something like an 8GB LG Nexus for $400, 16GB LG Nexus for $450, and the Galaxy Nexus either stays at $350 or drops to $300, all available directly from the Play Store. Those would be excellent prices but might just be a little wishful thinking.

OP, if you can wait a few weeks, see what's up with the next Nexus. Worst case scenario if you don't like the new Nexus device, the Galaxy Nexus will drop in price a little bit and you can pick one up.
If you're going GSM, its a generally solid device. Nothing blatantly wrong with it you should be worried about.

My friend is coming early November from US . The ban there just got lifted and it's never going to release in India , so i am going for it anyhow . However I will cry for sometime if the nexus 4 comes with 2000mAH battery with 16GB ~ $450/- and the nexus 3 price drops by $50 within a month . :crying:

[Q] waiting for 2013 nexus?

How many people are gonna wait for next years nexus phone instead of buying the nexus 4?
I only recently bought a Galaxy nexus and i'm definitely gonna wait because the only major differences are the camera, CPU and battery
Whats everyone's thoughts? whos gonna wait and whose gonna take the plunge?
If the N4 was the same price as the GNex was at launch, sure that'd be an easy decision, but it being so cheap makes it hard to resist.
Personally, I think I'm going to wait and see how 4.2 runs on the GNex and then make up my mind.

I'll be waiting for the 2013 nexus.
Nexus 4 is step 1.... I prefer to wait until they've got it stable
Having recently acquire a Galaxy Tab 2, in addition to my SGN which is only 9 months old, I think the remainder of this year's electronics budget is going towards the new ARM Chromebook. Quad core is nice and all but having just started writing Android apps, there's the danger of only testing on really fast hardware and discovering your app is a dud only when it's too late
I foresee my SGN lasting at least one battery replacement -- when updates stop coming out, I'll get whatever the current Nexus is and put CyanogenMod on the SGN. Plus resale values have probably tanked ever since the N4 annoucement came out.
I will wait. I don't want to give my money to LG again... (I had an O2x)
While the nexus 4 is a great improvement over the Galaxy Nexus. The non removable battery kinda killed it for me. I have a spare battery for my phone that i use allot and i can't go with a phone without a removable battery.
As long as my Galaxy Nexus does everything i need it to do I won't abandon it.

I will wait. The quad core and camera are not doing it for me. We should be getting the 4.2 update shortly -which is the key point for me. I believe the next Nexus will be running Android 5, that's really something to look forward to.

Without Lte, unable to convince me to switch nexus 4, I will take nexus 7 3g
I think My Gnex is Good enough to last another 1 year
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I'm going to wait and see, but currently I'm leaning towards "keep the GNex & upgrade next year". I don't need the extra horsepower, the screen is a minimal upgrade and the looks aren't really spectacular enough to make me want to switch for fashion.
The camera improvements are nice, but don't seem enough to make me want to bite.
And we get all the 4.2 goodness anyway.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I'm keeping it for another year but I love the gorilla glass and overall more thoughtful case design. With the current phone, it's a risk giving it to my 5 year old to watch a netflix video.

Same here. I had the horrible LG Revolution, and they've lost my business forever.
Plus how on earth did Google make the decision to drop LTE. That is going got bite them in the butt. once you have real 4G LTE speeds, not that HPSA BS you'll never want to go back.
I see the Nexus 4 like an inferior Galaxy Nexus. The ONLY things it has going for it is an extra Gig of RAM, a "supposedly" better camera, and a better processor.
To me a nice dual core phone with a nice screen, excellent ROM support and freaking LTE makes much more sense.

I'm going to wait and see. I just don't think the quad processor is going to make a whole lot of difference in real world to me. I'm not a gamer so I don't need to shell out another $400 for the 16g device with tax right now. Most apps are not even going to be optimized for the quad processor right now anyway. Our genx will run 4.2 nice and smooth and easily get me thru till the next one is released next year. If I tried to keep up with every phone that comes out that's better, I'd go broke!

[Q] G3 or Nexus 6?

We all know that android L will probably be pre installed on the nexus 6 so would you wait for the n6 or get the g3
What Nexus 6? I thought Google scrapped that project and are looking to have a Google Silver phone in the works.
http://m.androidcentral.com/nexus-device-program-isnt-going-away
Plus, you can't compare to a phone thats out now, to a future phone that hasn't even been announced yet. Its only the OS thats been announced and there using it on a ref device.only.

Hi F4M0U569. Quite a really good question - I still evaluate pros and cons. My G3 should be delivered today but I see the Nexus 6 at the end of the year.
I don't think the Nexus 6 smartphone would be a younger and slightly adjusted G3, as much others do right now. I believe, Google won't bring a smartphone reference platform - this is what the Nexus devices are - with an "old" 32 bit Snapdragon 801 when the new Android system was released with the advantage of a 64 bit system.
But if you need a new device for whatever reason (old one is defect/too slow, you're just so delighted/happy and freaking out because of this new device - like me), than just buy it. If you can wait, wait until you need a new device. Don't wait for the next big step. As soon as you have the new device, it's ready to go to the museum soon.

not gonna happen
I can only give my opinion from the Nexus 5 situation that I had.
Prior to buying a nexus 5 I had a Galaxy S4 then after switching to the Nexus 5 although a great phone I realised that it is simply a trimmed down version of the G2 with different button placement.
I the case of the G3 I think what you have already is maybe an idea of what the next Nexus may be. I know LG are developing it but specs wise I cannot see the Nexus 6 beating the G3 by much or if at all.
The only real decider is the software with the Nexus being a pure android device. But as we are on XDA I think we all understand the power of the devs and community. There will be ROMs for the G3 that will be able to provide the same experience soon enough.
My thoughts anyway
Nexus = mid range phones
The only advantage I see with nexus phones are the fast updates, so if updates are not super important for you go for the G3
