[Q] Id love a straight answer on how to mount a wifi storage drive! - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

So I have spent a long time chasing down what have turned out to be dead ends to try and achieve my goal and I am sure the masters of all things android can point me in the right direction!
Here is my setup; N7 2013 rooted lollipop 5.02 stock kernel 500gb seagate wireless, slimport, pair of wireless ps3 controllers. I love the idea of having an easy to transport arcade but the only hitch I am running into is the storage on this thing. I have tried this app, that app (mountmanager, andsmb, cifsmanager, etc.... trying to mount a wifi drive for hours to no avail. From what I have come to understand is that somewhere along the lines they did away with that and my only option is to reflash the rom back to....? I would be so very appreciative for someone to help me out with a plan of attack. The best I could figure was 4.1.2 would work as what is described in this post is what I am after;
google for "nexus-7-tutorial-mount-network-share-as-a-drive" [I could not post web link]
is there anything I might be missing? again, thanks a million and I really did try and do all my research before asking a potentially easy question, I am kind of a dinosaur now... hell, I am still using a blackberry to make phone calls this last month has been a crash course in androidology!

Are you wanting to mount the drive to the device or just R/W media from it?

I need for the applications to be able to see the files and folders on it. the apps in question being retroarch and mame4droid. Writing would be nice for save states. I thought it would be great if they had the ability to see the lan like es browser can...

Hmmmm that sounds pretty complicated. The only I think to do it is to manually move the save back and forth. I'm no expert and may be totally wrong but I believe most apps just request data to be saved and android does it so what you want to may be damn near impossible unless you can rewrite android save area to a new one, or reprogram the app to save in another place. Again this is just speculation and i t might be super easy, maybe someone with a little more expertise can correct me.

at this point, I know it was working as of 4.12 and the updates past that changed things and made this hard if not impossible. Search for the link to maybe understand more. I will let this question air out for a week as I dont want to hassle with reverting back to that rom, but if I have to, I absolutely will! my N7 would love to have 500gigs!

Just a heads up- anything you've read about it working with 4.1.2 is for the 2012 Nexus 7 only. The 2013 N7 shipped with 4.3 so all ROMs for it are 4.3 or later so unfortunately 4.1.2 is not an option for you. And I personally have never come across a mod like what you're looking for, for the 2013 N7. It would be pretty damn cool if we could do that though, for sure.

From reading that tutorial, it looks pretty simple. Did you get sharing to work OK on a home network to a PC. Since I don't know much about that seagate wireless device, I'm guessing that part of the issues are how it is configured.
You don't mention what sort of a network configuration you are using. For example, since that tutorial taked about using the IP address, you would need to make sure the drive is configured - and I would assume with a static IP address. That makes it harder to use in a more "portable" situation, since the networking might be tricky. The rest of it - mounting an SMB share (similar to a windows machines shared drive) seems straight forward...
I may play with this (using a PC share) just to see...
Cheers

He's not planning on using it for simple file storage, he wants to actually mount it as another system drive and be able to run stuff off it just like it's part of the system. I do not believe it's currently possible.

Well, looking around more, you need to have the right kernel, and both of the main "custom" kernels for Lollipop (ElementalX and Glitch) do *NOT* have CIFS support. ElementalX had it for the KK releases, so all the tools that help you mount a shared drive will fail.
So, looks like it's 4.4.x for you!...and you will need a custom kernel as well. Even then, are you sure you can use the mounted directory for what you want? May not be where those games, etc. expect to see files...
Anyway, good luck

There are two issues here...1) can you even mount it at all - if it is "MOUNTED", then it's visible, and I understand that he doesn't want an intermediate program (like a file browser) in the middle. BUT...2) can his applications use it - i.e. can it be mounted as an overlay or as if it was an SD Card, etc.
If you can't even do #1, #2 is moot

So I am trying to figure out if you are saying its not doable or...? When I mount a SDcard with an otg cable [using stickmount] it mounts just fine to a place where the apps (emulators) can find and access it. If I went to KK 4.4 and threw on elementalx... you are saying I may have another problem here?
BTW, thanks you guys for looking into this again! I feel like I am just one step away from a truly amazing setup!

No, what *I* was saying that that you need to make sure a "mounted" drive can be used. If it can't, it doesn't matter if you get it to work.
So, YES, if you go back to KK, and to something like ElementalX, then MAYBE you can get it to mount. Or as stated, Try CYANOGEN...they have the CIFS modules in the kernel, so you don't have to try to find the right one and "insmod" them (i.e. dynamically load them).

Quick question..

I'm new 2 the rooting and the Android itself.. I got the 2.2 on my EVO like most ppl have via update, I'm kinda skeptical of rooting it still.. I guess my question is, is it worth rooting it and what changes on the device itself?
Any information would and will be extremely appreciated..
Thanx in advance...

Good day to you.
First off. welcome. second, as its your FIRST post I hope you wont get flamed too hard because there are many many threads that cover the pros/cons of rooting.
I suggest next time you have a question, take a minute to use the search function (and post in the right forum! questions go in Q&A).
A few quick pros of rooting.
Free wireless tether (sharing your phones internet connection with a laptop or other wifi enabled device)
The ability to flash custom ROMs, these are the operating systems of the phone, they're all built off of (for the most part) stock htc/sprint images, but there are plenty and many options, find one that suits your needs and try it out.
Custom kernels, they are the set of drivers and the "brain" of your phone, want it overclocked? get a custom kernel, want it undervolted (Save battery) get a custom kernel. many options to choose from
Custom Boot screens.
Root only applications, titanium backup (backs up stuff, i dont use it so i cant elaborate), shootme (screenshot program) and others im sure.
Hope this clears up some stuff, welcome, use the search (really im just trying to help ya here) and have fun!
Round of applause for nenn. While I agree with your first few sentences, there aren't many "nice guys" on this site and especially on the Evo boards. People tend to forget that this phone is relatively new and has attracted many new people to the world of Android (like myself) who know nothing about anything.
OP: A few things you can do with root that nenn did not mention:
1) You can read/write from your SD card.
2) You can remove all the garbage that your phone came loaded with from Sprint and HTC (like Sprint Nascar and Peep).
3) With Titanium back-up, it allows you to transfer all user apps to the SD card keeping your phones internal memory clean, you can back up and restore all apps and system data, and you can use it to uninstall apps you don't want as mentioned in point #2.
4) Custom kernels also remove the 30 fps cap on our phones (I get 52 fps average with my set up).
5) You can use other root-only programs like ROM Manager which lets you flash files onto your phone easily via a custom recovery. Also, you can back up several ROM's and switch from one to the other, or go back to a previous working ROM if you flash something on your phone that doesn't sit well with it.
If everything that we have mentioned means nothing to you, then just enjoy your phone as it is. It is a great device and you can get plenty of use out if without rooting it.

Rooting 2.2
I am rooting for the first time and I'm stuck now. I am in the section where you enter the commands into the cmd command box.
I just entered the ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
and it says that it not found but when I entered it earlier it worke just fine, can anyone help me plz

[Q] Decks Reloaded Questions(believe me i searched before i did this)

I even checked another one in the similar posts thread before finally writing this up. Ok
heres the skinny.
Rom is obv decks reloaded, as far as i know i have the latest update, released on the 25th of may. 44 mag rls.
i did the custom install and went with just about everything optional. (i also have run it in the standard install, the questions i have remain the same, affected me both ways)
I declined to run dtapps2sd because i have so much music on my sd card that backing it all up before wiping and partioning was just not an option.
Using amon-ra recovery
did complete wipes 3x, plus the wiper zip recommended, i love it. It is dam near perfection. Everything runs better, battery lasts longer, no more sprint nascar updates, no more sprint anything, I still have a wee bit of room left on internal storage, i just have, a few little questions/problems
1.I cannot for the life of me, figure out how to download attachments from my email in this rom, i have tried different email apps, ive tried installing the gmail attachment fetcher apps, everything i can think of. still cant get it to let me download anything, wont even pop up the option, just shows a paperclip, mocking me.
2.this might be my main irritation, i dont know what the deal is, or what is going on, but on my first install, and now randomly on my final, i get a weird, brrrgrgrggrggg dj remix dubstep lag sound while im playing music, and sadly, the dsp settings enabling the bassboost, is actually one of my FAVORITE parts about this whole rom, it makes my music sound great, but when it does that nearly in every song playing. it gets annoying, and im trying to figure out why.
I have a 32 gb kingston card, its always worked great, its not even a year old. and its never had a problem before. i still have 8 gigs free on it. I also noticed, when i did my final install, it seemed to actually stop doing it. Until i tried to plug it into my laptop via usb. Then, it was doing it really bad. Took the micro sd out, put it back in, settled down a bit. but i dont know. its a strange, strange thing. Anyone else having this issue? Or know a cause?
3. The usb tether... I saw this quesiton posted before, and the only suggestion was downloading the same version im already running. It will connect, but then, it just keeps asking to connect again, and my status bar starts bouncing text up and down, just go with a usb sync app from the market? any thoughts?
finally,
4. I know its on there, but how do i install the miui cam, i have a file explorer, i cant find it. Is this because im not running apps2sd? If not, where is it located, i looked under apps and data, i did not see anything, and then if i can get pointed to where the heck it is, what is the process, moving it to the folder the actual camera is in, and renaming it to an apk?
I admit. Im still new to all this.
but i do have much love, and, i owe xda, android forums and max @ evohacks alot of thanks and gratitude. Im doing my best, at giving a little where i can
i was going to post a screen shot, but i cant, because im too new , to show i did buy the xda PREMIUM app, what what hahaha...
any help, especially from one of the devs or a certified super genius on this rom, would be greatly, greatly, appreciated. ****, ill say it right now. help me solve these problems, and i will donate to your cause, buy your t-shirt, subscribe to your twitter, blog, whatever(sell my soul, give you my firstborn child....). Truly. and i stick to my word(especially on the soul/child). BIG BIG THANKS to all the devs who made this rom, TRULY. i FN LOVE IT. and if i never figure this crap out, ill keep using it anyways. Until they make a newer one, or i get my GSIII whenever someone decides to tell me when theyre going to actually release the 64gb version. ok. probably way too much talky. bye bye

I'm not sure about your other questions but at least for this one you need a file explorer that allows you to browse outside the sd card (I use root explorer) and then it is in data/app and is labled "MIUI Camera 17.apk" just tap it and it should ask you if you want to install it. At that point it is just an app on your phone.
For the other questions you might be better off posting this in the thread for Decks reloaded. Once it is in there you are more likely to get a response from rope, jaime or one of the other helpful people using this rom who know more than I do
I had the usb problem as well in fact posted about it a few days ago. What worked for me was the second solution of downloading bootmanager lite from the market hope that helps you!
thank you guys

If you're having a problem with the rom, and can find the answer after searching xda and google, the dev's are usually ok with helping you out. If it is a problem unique to you, they'll try and help you and if it's a global problem with teh rom, they will want to know about it anyways.
btw, I replied to your pm about the file explorer.

Remind me again why there's no SD Card?

It still confuses me as to why Samsung would chose not to include a physical SD card for the Nexus. The convenience of a removeable drive certainly outweigh a virtual one. It use to keep all sorts of different ROMs and stuff stored on my handful of memory cards.
I also just found out I can't transfer anything to my phone via USB on my work computer because it doesn't support MTP. Plus I can't reach 4g at my desk so downloading ROMs over 3g to my phone is going to be a royal PITA
SD cards slow down the phone. But I think there's a way to change the connection to mass storage when you connect to a pc.

I've been able to transfer any file from windows 7 laptop to the GNex via USB cord. After plugging in, just tap the 'turn on mass storage mode' icon on the phone and you're in like flynn. I've moved over a few movies. Music was a pain all of mine is in wma format therefore I had to install google music on my laptop and upload my tunes into the cloud to access on my phone.

no, its a unified storage. the phone system, apps, and personal data are on the same partition. this increases accessibility of data that is on the "sdcard"

Yes, there most certainly is.
Just because you don't know how to access it does not validate it's lack of existance.
Well, this doesn't resolve them from not having an SD Card but I was able to get around my main need for one. I basically just need a way to tinker with ROMs while I'm bored at work. Here's what I did:
1. Disable USB Debugging
2. Use MTP transfer
3. Plug into computer
4. Use File Explore to access Galaxy Media Device
5. Rename the file I want to transfer (usually .zip) to a ".mp3" file.
6. Move the file over
7. On my Nexus I used Solid Explorer to rename the file back to .zip
In Settings >> Storage >> ... >> USB Computer Connection, I see an option for Camera (PTP) with the description stating "Lets you transfer photos using camera software, and transfer any files on computers that don't support MTP" However I've never tried this option I always just use a WiFi connection.

more to the topic, i don't understand the lack of an sdcard, either. frankly, i fail to understand the rationale as to why one wouldn't be included. if it in any way had to do with read/write speeds, Sammy and Google clearly had to know about the new sdcards coming down the pike, with greatly enhanced read/write speeds. with Boot Manager, and the ability to flash numerous roms, the extra storage space would be nice because the ICS rom files are HUGE.

There is no such thing as a usb mass storage option on the Galaxy Nexus. Search and read up on what you find and you'll know that I'm right.

i'm sure it wasn't at the top of their priority list. but, at the same time, they made a device without an OEM skin, and gave it an unlockable bootloader. they obviously knew that this would be a developer device. in fact, the Nexus line is generally known as a "developer device," hasn't it?! given the general overall outcry for storage space in smartphones, plus knowing that this would be a developer device, i would think that additional storage would have been something to consider. just my opinion...

it is disappointing, but wasn't a deal breaker for me. ext sd would have been an obvious plus, but 32 gb IS a lot of storage. but, can't really begrudge you for your choice. having to constantly worry about storage space is kind of a pita...

from months it is known that we haven't got mass storage mode,bt not only gnex users, all the honeycomb (or at least the major part..)tablets shipped last year, and all the phones shipped from gnex so on,has mtp storage connections and it's a standard that it's been choosed.i'm with that from last years on honeycomb and like that more than olders connections (pc suite\mass storage)
using win7 and all is ok,only prob is the transfer of many many small files, like icons, instead big files are very fast.heard of problems at using others OS,but luckly it's not my case...

here in italy, with slow connections,it's a pain to store music\images and files on web clouds...slow 3g and not extended wifi-zones me to have all the stuffs inside memory...it's for that that i miss a bit an external microSD.not a so big problem,at least not so big to move on gs2 or another smartphone.like a lot gnex, hate the form factory of gs2 and prefer at all chip\screen(type,resolution and size)\full-touch(no phisical buttons)and google experience debloated from the beginning, but this is another story.dislike as hell the stupid speaker inserted from samsung.I'd like to have a 32 gb version like yours...here in italy only 16 gb version, and with 13 gb when empty i need a little bit more..

There is no such thing as a usb mass storage option on the Galaxy Nexus. Search and read up on what you find and you'll know that I'm right.
If you think I'm wrong, then post some proof. Good luck on that end.

Yeah, I tried that too. The files were all visible in explorer but everything was locked and it didn't actually allow me to transfer anything using it

Well, if you're running OS X like me, you can use the file transfer utility that google made: android.com/filetransfer
It can be a little temperamental but it will get the job done

This looks like a great idea, but I'm wondering how they hold up. (I always worry about losing the caps to my keychain thumbdrives. :silly:
It Works, But
I got one. A nice little piece of kit. But so far it isn't a seemless experience.
The default Apps don't seem to recognize it. Neither Gallery nor QuickPic will find any of the photos on it until I navigate to it using ES File Explorer. Gallery will only show the photo I open from File Explorer. QuickPic will allow me to browse the directory of a photo I select, but not move up the directory tree.
As for music files, Play Music will do so for the file selected from ES File, but won't allow me to search the memory card.

Cedarsprings thanks for letting us know.. Kinda interested now!
Do u have root on ur Moto X? If so, can you pls give chainfire's stickmount from the play store a shot?
I think it may solve your problem by auto mounting the OTG device on boot.
If it works, I'm definitely getting one for my X too!

Nice! As soon as I read Cedarsprings review I was kinda bummed cause I just ordered one of these today. But if stickmount works, this little drive will be my new favorite toy
When I had my nexus 7 and used some random OTG, it worked like a charm on it .. So here's hoping! The meenova looks so much more schmick than the clunky OTG I used to have!!

Not Rooted Yet
While I got the Developer Edition, I haven't rooted it yet as I'm still deciding whether or not to put either my company e-mail (with their MaaS360 Mobile Device Management) or my client's e-mail (and its Citrix Recevier security - speaking of, what poor reviews!). Either Maas360 will detect Root, or it is just company "policy" to not allow rooted devices, and I'm still trying to find out which is is before I move on things.
I'd thought changing the USB Computer Connection setting in teh Storage settings from Media Device (MTP) to Camera (PTP) might help, but no joy. In fact, I was a bit surprised that there wasn't anything about the attached device there.
And while I'd also like to get Titanium Backup in place, there aren't any ROMs with real appealing capabilities that are pushing me to unlock and root. Now, when there's a Menu patch like Jason Robitaille's Advanced Launcer Options in WebOS, I'll be rooted & ROMing in a heartbeat.

Totally understandable .. I think in theory it should work, but just wasn't sure about motox compatibility with the stickmount and otg setup... Apparently Motorola phones dont seem to work with Carbon/Helium backup so I was wondering if something in the system might interrupt the setup.
hells yeah... Another webOS fan!! So rare to find one these days.. I'm only on Android becuz things went south ... At least matias is design the UI for android now.. And with HP's alleged intention to sell webOS patents, we just might find that Android becomes more webOS-y in the future!
The patch system was awesome! I think Rod Whitby setup Nexus Internals a while back when HP started giving up on webOS... Not sure if they are working on any solutions similar to preware? Closed framework is very similar in concept tho... Have u installed it?

Response from Meenov
I sent a note to the Meenov support site yesterday, giving them a heads-up about the Moto X issue and this thread, and got this quick response:
"Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately that's because Moto X removed certain support for external USB storage, while Moto's other models (Droid series) have better support for external USB storage."
So hopefully the smarter among us will figure out what the problem is and it in a future ROM.

Is it stock rom? what format of SD card do you use? FAT32, exFAT etc. And does it automatically mounted?

Stock ROM, FAT32, and sort of. It doesn't need to mount like a typical SD card. Plug it in and it will automatically show up in /storage. Unplug it when done, no need or way to unmount.

Ok, so I've had mine for about a week now and it works great with my 32GB UHS-1 class card.
To get your media to read in other apps, such as music in Google Play Music, download the app by Chainfire called Stickmount. Mount the Meenov. Second, if you wanna go the free route, download the app called Rescan Media Root and run it. (obviously, you need to have root access) Give it about 10-20 seconds (your Meenov will start to blink) and your music should start appearing in Google Play Music. Just remember to Unmount when you want to remove the Meenov reader. And to remove all your music stored on the card that still appears in Google Play Music, run Rescan Media Root again.
Or, you can just drop $2.49 on the pro version of Stickmount and it will automatically trigger a rescan on mount and unmount.

Pixel, 7.1.1 and OTG

All,
Any ideas why when trying to read SD cards out of a DSLR over OTG I get a notification basically saying I need to set the card up for use with the phone as it's not compatible? I never had this issue on my Note 4, just plugged in the card and it read it without issue. I presume it can't read FAT or NTFS, the opposite to whatever the cards are.
Is there a way of sorting this so they're readable without rooting? Seems bizarre that a two year old phone can read them but this can't.

I must preface by saying that I do not currently use an OTG device. However, I develop other aspects of many apps that are OTG aware. Let me just guess here that your Note 4 runs Android 5. Marshmallow 6.0 changed permissions with regards to direct access of removable storage. What app are you using in attempt to read your OTG? Look for a Marshmallow-compatible file manager, and try that. In any event, OTG is fully supported with Android 7 and later. That's evident by the OTG adapter that comes in your Pixel box.
Again, I may be off base, and willingly admit as such.

I've tried various different filemanagers, the only one I found that would even show the SD card as attached was ES but when clicked it just errors. I don't think that is the issue as Android itself is over-riding what they're doing and stating that the SD is not compatible, presumably due to the format of it as I said. If you click the notification it takes you to a setup of the card so that it can be formatted. I could try using a blank card, letting it do whatever it wants to do and then try it in a camera and see if the camera wants to format it back to something else but there must be a way of making this work without immense amounts of faff.
It will only read FAT32 natively (which blows IMO). I'm thinking that your DSLR probably uses exFAT which will require an app, such as USB Media Explorer.
Most Android phones from the manufacturers will include support for exfat, this includes Samsung. Stock Android does not support exfat as it requires a licencing fee that Google does not include.
Thanks.
So is there such an app, without root, that'll read it without issue? Will USB Media Explorer do it?
There's a review for it that specifically mentions the Pixel and it working but has anyone got it and can confirm?
Bit the bullet and it works.
Chalk this one up as fixed.
