Galaxy S6 Tips and Tricks - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S6

1. Double tap home button to launch the camera in under one second.
1B. Disable the double-tap quick launch in the camera options to get rid of the delay when pressing the home button. It's a neat feature, but makes the home button much more quicker. (Thanks to @B1aze)
2. Use themes to change the look of your phone (limited as of right now; will be more widely available in the coming weeks to developers/themers).
3. Go into your App drawer and long press an icon as if you want to move/delete it. The small circles with the red '-' sign will let you either delete an app (if third-party) or disable it (if built-in).
4. Hold the power key for more than 7 seconds and the device will reboot. Hold VolUp+Home+Power to boot into recovery. Hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot into Download Mode.
5. Whenever you want to take a "selfie", you can simply frame the image first, and then put your finger on the heart rate sensor under the LED light at the back in order to take one.
6. When downloading a large file (30+ MB) and you have LTE AND are near WiFi, activate Download Booster! Settings--->More Connection Settings--->Download Booster. It combines both your WiFi and LTE connections into one for amazing DL speeds. Stupid Sprint took this out :/
7. Notification reminders! Settings--->Accessibility--->Notification reminders.
8. Don't forget to claim your free 100 GB cloud storage with OneDrive!
9. Private mode... You can hide content from prying eyes, including photos, videos, music, web history, and such. To activate it, go to Settings--->Privacy and safety--->Private mode.
10. Do Not Disturb mode. Dare I say... Better than Google's implementation of "priority notification only" mode. You can set a schedule for it, who IS/ISN'T allowed to contact you while it's on, etc.
11. Screen Pinning. Go to Lock Screen and Security--->Other Security Settings--->Pin Windows.
12. Customize your screen grid (4x4, 4x5 or 5x5) by pinching in when on the home screen.
13. Developer Options.. To enable this, go to Settings--->About Device--->Tap "Build Number" 10 times and you will unlock Developer Options!
14. Make your device a bit faster by going to Developer Options and setting window animation scale, transition animation scale & animator duration scale all to 0.5.
15. When you are in an app (Chrome, Gallery .... whatever) and you drag your finger from the upper right corner to somewhere in the middle of the screen the app shrinks which makes it more usable with one hand. (Thanks to @derWolf_)
16. You can have changing lockscreen wallpapers by changing it in the settings and selecting multiple wallpapers in the selection box. (Thanks to @altimax98)
17. For those having issues with Snapchat videos, go into Developer settings (see #13) and uncheck Nuplayer.
18. For better results with the fingerprint scanner, register your thumb multiple times for it to be more accurate.
19. Screenshot by holding power+home at the same time or using palm swipe to capture (turn on in settings).
20. Direction lock... Settings-->Accessibility. New way of unlocking your phone.
21. Under voice wake you can use Svoice to set a custom phrase to wake up the phone directly to listening for a command. (Thanks to @benjmiester)
22. If you rest any registered fingers over the scanner, it'll light up which registry it is. Helpful is you need to redo the fingerprint. (Thanks to @hayabusa1300cc; post #13 for screenshot).
23. Really debloat your GS6 (no root needed!)
24. Cell standby drain? Go into recovery mode and wipe your cache, power off phone completely then reboot.
25. Go to the dialer, and press the green dial button. It will load the last dialed number. (Thanks to @Jrhoop)
26. Disable the capacitive lights with no root required! (A LOT OF THANKS to @Averix)
26A. How to disable capacitive button lights. (ADB)
27. The volume down button can be used to take pictures when the camera app is running. (Thanks @segag)
28. Use volume keys in default messaging app to increase/decrease font size. (Thanks @jambo89liam)
29. If you want to enable grayscale without going into super power saving mode, go to settings -> personal -> accessibility -> direct access and turn both direct access on and grayscale. Once you do this, a triple tap of the home button will toggle grayscale on and off. (Thanks @shappy0869)
Will be adding as time goes on, feel free to add your own and I will add it to the OP!

I read somewhere that the phone doesnt have that option unless you go into power saving mode or somerthing like that. This was one of the first things i tried doing at store but couldnt.
Why Samsung removed this option I have no clue, but it was a stupid one.

That's every phone on Lollipop!

Has anyone figured out to disable extra sensitivity on the phone? I read its enabled by default but there's no way to disable it.

Ok I've figured out something with the fingerprint scanner. If you didn't rename the registered fingers then you may forget which finger is assigned like i did.
Well if you rest any registered fingers over the scanner, it'll light up which registry it is. Helpful is you need to redo the fingerprint.

Not really an S6 trick/tip. But I just figured out that if you tap the build number in google play store, it'll force update to latest version.

That was implemented months ago my friend.

Launch Google Now by holding the home button

Here are two tips that I don't think have been mentioned.
First, battery life will be greatly increased if you enable wi-fi calling under Connections. Once enabled (and activated on your Sprint account, for free), your cellular radio will essentially be turned off and all calls will go over wifi. I have noticed this really helps extend battery life.
Second, if you want to enable grayscale without going into super power saving mode, go to settings -> personal -> accessibility -> direct access and turn both direct access on and grayscale. Once you do this, a triple tap of the home button will toggle grayscale on and off.

Almost at 30, keep em' coming

If you long press on a notification it will change a darker color then click on the white exclamation box and it will take you straight the notification settings for that app. Much easier than going the long way around.

[REQ] Need a shortcut to toggle Bluetooth on/off

I am using a BT handsfree in my car. I need a quick method to toggle BT on/off mith the minimum of clicks. Ideally, on the home screen.
Any solution is appreciated, also existing apps/tweaks whatsoever.
The option to keep BT all the time on is not acceptable, due to many reasons eg. battery consumtion.
Thanx
Search for vjvolubilis. It's here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=255911

work a treat - ammars action screen enables bluetooth with discoverability and panoshas just enables bluetooth

AEButton Plus will do what you're after. I have it set to a tripple press of the up volume button (double is WiFi toggle, single: Volume) but you can set it to anything, even a single press.

It's not actually only the toggle, it's a whole software to programmatically change buttons behavior.
Don't know what you mean with two files, all you need is a .cab file. Simply comy it somewhere to device (e.g. onto mictoSD per USB cable) and then start it in Windows Explorer.
During install you will get the settings window, where you can perform settings as I suggested above.

Wake phone up with trackpad?

I think the G2 guys could have taken this one cue from the iPhone and other phones. I'm really hoping this is something we can add after root is available.
Not a big fan of having to use the power button.
I have been using widget locker app and it allows to be waken from by trackpad.

ya on my n1 it was so much more convenient to just press the trackball to wake ugh patience i guess...

No legendary is right. Widget locker fixes this well enough.
Just disable the notification icon and in advanced settings check "wake up with any button press".
As far as I can tell the only draw back is having to slide the bar to unlock and then having to enter ur unlock pattern if u have one.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I'm glad you found your answer on your own. I really do like that app and when it worked it was a double bonus. Had it installed on my nexus one. Can't wait for ROMS to take advantage of it soon
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I used it on my Vibrant. It was kind of buggy at times. Though, I'm not sure if that was the app, or the phone.
No its the app. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't...
Another trick
If you are holding the phone in your left hand (as I mostly do), use the trick that someone posted in another thread-- Just snap the keyboard open about 1/4 of the way. It will wake and unlock in one super-quick step. It can be done in the right hand, too, just not quite as easily.

You really have to tweak settings to make it reliable... took me a bit. Hiding the notification makes it less reliable by their own admission. I have it working fine now though.

Buttons > Allow Menu Button in Lock Mode

Behavior > HomeHelpers Launcher set to your preferred system home (I'm using Launcher Pro)
Advanced > Easy Wake Mode
and DO NOT hide notification icon if you can help it.
I'm also using the rotary slider instead of the standard one...
so now I press the trackpad to wake up... slide to unlick, and then use unlock pattern to get to home screen. I still prefer that to having to press the top power button.

awesome - thanks for this, i'll be giving it a whirl!
[EDIT] i just tried it out, tried many different settings (including those suggested) and couldn't get it to work more than a few times. alas, that's more frustrating than helpful, so til it's fixed i've uninstalled. thanks for trying to help out though - i really do want trackpad wake.
^ ditto. It was reliable for a while then became sporadic
This should be an app fixable thing as opposed to needing root though. I will wait I suppose.
I really want this feature too, but I don't want to have the phone wake when pressing the vol/camera keys. Is there somewhere we can request this in the next software update from T-mobile / HTC? I assume this is not remediable without rooting otherwise. I'd prefer not to root my phone just for this one feature.
i haven't tweaked any settings and my trackpad now wakes the phone up every time. I say now, as it didn't do it consistently until i un-installed a live wall paper i had (Thunderstorms) - a couple of other issues vaporized when i un-installed that app
neat wallpaper though - the developer is supposed to be working out the bugs for use on the G2

Hahhaha! Don't ask tmobile or htc for help. They'll just lock it down more. I have a headache from trying to get root access working. This nand lock really sucks! Sorry a bit off topic, I guess.
So now that we've got full root, is there a quick, simple and reliable way to wake the phone by pressing the trackpad button (i.e. wake to the unlock screen, not fully unlock).
[Edit: Found it, works perfectly on my Desire-Z, needs root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830806]

I don't mean the sliders that come with the app. I'm having trouble adding custom sliders and themes like CowonD3Lock, PowerMod3, ArrowSlider, etc.
WidgetLocker works without a hitch on my Galaxy S2 - with custom sliders installed. The way I moved them to the phone was via Dropbox. I moved the slider .zip-files to the Dropbox on my computer, then opened the (Dropbox) phone app and selected open with WidgetLocker for the slider archives.
Problem solved. Thank you guys
i have another problem with WL, when i want to copy files to my phone thru USB cable it says i must stop all running programs. When i stop WL everything is OK.
Is there any solution to this? (if you understand my problem)
WidgetLocker is awesome, however i haven't been able to use the Alternative Wallpaper option. Anyone else having that issue? I can select one and resize it but it never appears on the lock screen. Instead I only see the homescreen wallpaper.
SOLVED!
Apparently it just didn't like me resizing the orange background selection box to max. Leaving the size just shy of full got it working.
bugs and issues
So, is it just me?
I've been trying to play with settings but unfortunately these issues remain on SGS2:
Home Button
I have unchecked "Allowed Home Button" but I can still unlock the screen when I press the home button. Press once to see WL (with a small delay - bigger than on SGS), press again to unlock.
Wake Up
I can wake up the device also by using the power button despite having Easy Wake Mode unchecked.
Stock Lock
I always see the stock orange unlock screen first when a text message or email is received. Keyguard Dance is checked. If there is a missed call, it's fine, I see the WL. Stock screen was also on when the device was downloading a Gameloft game and it is also shown before an alarm is launched as well.
Notification
I have a slider for text messaging and emails with notifications enabled. Let's say I have both unread messages as well as emails. If I unlock it, read them all, the notification bubbles are still there - they're not cleared. Unless I clear them again using each individual slider.
Can someone please help me with this... I am trying to disable the 4 default sliders to use a custom one in their place... but CAN'T. I have searched the settings but can't find out how to do this still... arggghhhh.

You don't use settings menu to change the sliders, you must hold on a blank spot on the screen for a couple of seconds, the choose custom slider. To change what the slider shall do you just drag the slider and you will get a menu what you want it to do and change icons and so.
Hope this helped you a little bit on the way.

Screen off quick calling
Call any of your contacts at any time. When this feature is enabled, all you need to do is press and hold the volume down button for 2 seconds and let go when you hear the voice prompt. Then, just say the name of the person you want to call to dial their number, even when your screen is off.
To enable screen off quick calling:
Step 1 Go to Dialer > Menu > Settings > Quick calling.
Step 2 Enable Quick calling.
Part 2: Launch apps with motion control
You can set up motion control for your favorite apps, so that they're just a gesture away. Simply use your knuckle to write out a letter on your phone screen to launch applications.
Step 1 Go to Settings > Smart assistance > Motion control > Draw.
Step 2 Enable Draw.
Step 3 Designate which draw actions correspond with a specified application
Note: This feature currently supports drawing the letters C, E, M, and W. You can choose which letters open which application.
Part 3: Screenshot features
One of the most enjoyable features of the mobile phone experience is taking screenshots of interesting content to share with our friends. Here, you can learn all the different ways to take screenshots, and the various types of screenshots available. All of the screenshots you take using these different techniques will be saved in the screenshots folder in your Gallery.
Screenshot and screen recording shortcuts
Pressing the power button and the volume down button at the same time will allow you to take a screenshot of your current screen.
Pressing the power button and the volume up button at the same time will allow you to make a screen recording.
Using the screenshot shortcut
Step 1 Go to the screen you would like to screenshot.
Step 2 Pull down on the notification panel and touch Shortcuts.
Step 3 Touch the screenshot shortcut to take a screenshot.
Note: You cannot use the screenshot shortcut to take a screenshot of the notification panel
Using your knuckles to take screenshots
Use your knuckles to take normal, scrolling, or partial screenshots.
To enable this feature:
Step 1 Go to Settings > Smart assistance > Motion control.
Step 2 Enable Smart screenshot.
You can take several different types of screenshots and even make screen recordings using different knuckle gestures
1. Normal screenshot: Knock twice, firmly and in quick succession, with your knuckle
2. Partial screenshot: Using your knuckle, draw an enclosed region on the screen to capture a partial screenshot. Make sure your knuckle stays in contact with the screen while you are taking the screenshot.
When you complete this action, your phone will take a screenshot of the area you have drawn with your knuckle. You will be able to see the shape you are drawing while taking a partial screenshot.
After you have finished drawing the shape, you can choose from four different shapes at the top right of the screen to refine its edges. You can also drag the corners and edges of the screenshot to adjust its size and shape.
3. Make a screen recording: Knock twice firmly with two knuckles to start or stop a screen recording.
4. Take a scrolling screenshot: Draw an S with your knuckle to take a scrolling screenshot. Your screen will automatically begin to scroll down. Touch your screen to stop the scrolling screenshot.

Similar to this or a shine effect only around camera or tens of other styles can be used to indicate an event such as charging, music playing or a notification to help you to know even who texted you just by a glance far from your phone.
some of you may know this app before and some may had struggled with it in its bad moment with a broken version but it did not stop improving and all got fixed and many more feature added.
Because this app has tons of options to customize your phone, even wallpapers, I will start by writing instructions for how to enable the basic options of the feature which this thread is about:
How To:
1- Search google play "AOE" or "Always On Edge" and install this ~6MB App
2- Enter section #1 "Main Settings"
choose if you want the LED effect to be shown within System Ambient Display or a separated screen
3- enable accessibility services and give required permissions
4- Go back and enter section #2 "App settings"
for when to light choose "when a notification comes" and/or charging lighting as you like
5- scroll to bottom and save.
6- Enter enabled apps section and make sure the app you will test with is enabled
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.used.aoe
Please give the app some time only once and then you will not need to even open it:
After testing please discover all sections the app can do what ever you need for such feature
like at the same place of step 4 you can enable Mixer which show all current notifications colors
and Reminder which repeat lighting every X seconds and let other options you may like.
in lighting settings section you can customize the general style of lighting.
the app is indeed complicated due to variety of options and I'm always working on improving it.
Battery Drain:
I use it personally for notifications only, all apps, while screen is on and off, reminder for 5 seconds every 5 seconds limited to 30 repeat and I got 100s of emails and messages and the app is not even on system battery use list. but in general this app can be used with no noticeable difference in battery usage and it can drain your battery in few hours. it depends on the options you choose, there are a lot of options to minimize battery consuming it basically depends on lighting time and enabled widgets.
in worst cases there is options to prevent the app from working if device is not charging and other 10s of options so you can set when the app should not light as when the app should light.
App brief description:
AOE contain a lot of features and options and all can be customized as you like, here is some of the main features:
Edge lighting can also be customized for charging, music, wallpaper and many other events
It can be customized to work in a highly flexible way with AOD clock or independently, or even both like Tap to Light feature.
Lighting can be around all screen or around front camera or both with many other lighting place options like LED style with variety of animations.
You can use it to show lighting effects for many events like notifications including missed calls of course, charging, fully charged, screen lock, screen unlock, headset plugged, listening to music ,
ongoing or outgoing calls, recent apps menu and flash after unlock.
You can customize lighting color, style, effect and place for each event, each app, each contact name or even each chat group.
Notifications light has more useful additional features like Reminder which the lighting will be repeated every period you choose and you can even choose to make a sound alert for notification reminder,
and Mixer which will iterate through all current notifications colors..
Brightness can be adjusted regardless of the lighting is independent or with Always On Display, on top of that you can set high brightness for lights and low brighting for AOD/clock widgets.
It has many options to restrict its job like prevent the app from lighting if device is charging, not charging, not in landscape mode, low battery, sleep time or to follow Do Not Disturb mode.
with a block list to prevent it from working for someone
AOE also support lighting in all screen states, turned off or turned on, horizontal or vertical.

Pretty cool! I didn't know about this app so thanks for sharing! Anyone else have any cool mods or recommendations for settings?
Awesome. Could you add the settings you use to center it on the hole? I'm getting there but just be nice as a starting point then could adjust thickness to taste . Thanks again! So cool. Takes me to back to OMG! NEXUS HAS A NOTIFICATION LED.

sorry I do not have a pixel but automatic adjustment should be fine initially (is not it?) then click preview and adjust manually a little bit using -+ buttons
Already paid for the Lifetime. This works really well!

This is as close as I could get it to center.
That's seems different from mine. By 10+ on some. I wonder how much the display size setting effect it. Thank you for the starting point.
I managed to use this app but everytime I got a new message after a restart, the app just don't work, does anybody knows a workaround? or it's just me not having a correct config?
seems gone from the playstore

Yeah, unfortunately. I just discovered it yesterday so I installed it from here. https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/alrbea-ent/always-on-edge-edge-lighting-/
But I also wanted to unlock all features by buying pro and that seems not to work without PlayStore
