I just got an OTA notification for 5.1 too. I'm running GPE RUU rooted 5.0.1 with the latest TWRP recovery.

It has the stock recovery listed as version 3.11.1700.5. Should i flash this version or a more recent one?

To flash the OTA you HAVE to bee 100% stock, not even root. OTA updates changed in Lollipop and if anything is different from the original system image it'll fail

I don't think that is the case regarding root. I think installing the update will mean I will loose root but as long as I have a stock recovery and system it should install. I'm just not sure about which version recovery to use..

Nope, it's ALL changed. In Lollipop if you're rooted, it'll fail. You HAVE to be 100% stock. It wasn't an issue pre-Lollipop, though

Does that mean that the only way to upgrade now for people who use root, Xposed, etc. is to do a Titanium Backup and then run a full RUU upgrade to the new image?
Backup your data, restore your stock backup (which you all made, of course), restore stock recovery and then apply the update and restore your data/re-root

i am going to root the phone by cwm recovery, then i have some questions:
when i was on 4.0.2, i rooted the box by cwm, and when i want to do update by OTA, i have to refresh back to the original recovery in the factory 4.0.2 image to apply the package, and that's what i have done...
so here is the question: if i root it by cwm again, and then flash the new recovery.img from factory 4.0.4 image download from "https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#yakjuimm76i"
to the phone, will it keep the ability to OTA to next android version? in another way, is there any difference between OTA & factory image OR, is there a identification to know that whether this device flashed a factory image or ota from a previous version?
ok, then if do not mv/rm /system/recovery-from-boot.p after flash cwm(for root), will it restore the stock recovery and keep the ability to do OTA?

The ota is usually just the parts of the rom that have been updated, those image files are the whole rom, if u root u will be able to get the ota but it won't install even with factory recovery,I haven't done it since my N1 but if I remember right u can delete super user from system app folder and delete,--- com.noshufou.android.su and reboot and root should be gone then ota will work and after u update u just root agn .... but your way u did it is always an option ....

thank u for response, i tried to update to 4.0.4 from rooted 4.0.2, and everything is ok.. according to your condition, i think there may be some difference between nexus S and galaxy nexus, so root is not the question(though i met some problem while rooting 4.0.4 caused by the version of su.zip is out of date ).
now i am on 4.0.4 and rooted by cwm, and i didn't delete /system/recovery-from-boot.p, i hope that i will not have to re-flash stock recovery when the next OTA come
When you say that is rooted through CWM, means what exactly? You only used the CWM to root the device? But how?
yep cause i wanna use stock rom on my GN so far, so i use cwm only for root(by flashing a su.zip), and after googled a lot, i think it has went back to stock recovery now, no longer worry about OTA, thank you

No difference. If you did not delete the two files (/system/etc/install-recovery.sh and /system/recovery-from-boot.p) then your device will automatically flash the correct stock recovery on every re-boot.
EDIT: Actually there is one difference: the OTA places those two files on your system, while a full stock ROM does not.

This is wrong. Rooting has no impact whatsoever on being able to install an OTA update.

No. OTA updates require stock recovery. However, you can revert to stock recovery and unroot as you please. Also, you can flash OTA updates through TWRP once a flashable zip is made, except you have to download it and flash it manually, just like installing a custom ROM. Cheers.

I received the last update through OTA on a rooted Stock ROM with TWRP installed.
After the install was finished TWRP asked if I wanted to restore the root. All went smoothly.
To clarify.. I did not flash the ROM. I used the normal OTA update.

I believe you can on small point updates. The full update from 4.3 to 4.4 most likely won't work with a custom recovery.

you must have stock /system folder + stock recovery
you can be rooted, by if you delete some files in /system - you break your ota
new ota will be with new radio too
after ota super-su apk will be removed by the ota

i restored /system apps from sdcard before 4.3 ota and migrate very well from 4.2.2
The ota 4.3 update removed my root and Twrp. Hope 4.4 doesn't do the same. It's always a pain for me to restore root with my Windows 7 laptop. It keeps installing the wrong usb drivers which get in the way of the wugfresh toolkit access to the nexus 7. So it's no easy task for me.

Now Lollipop has been released there's an OTA available on the phone but I'm not able to update through it. I've seen different posts all over the place about how you have to just install the stock recovery or how you have to use an RUU or how you have to use a NANDroid backup so the opinions are quite conflicting.
I basically just want the phone to run the stock unrooted version of Android so I'm able to perform the official OTA updates to Lollipop so how do I go about this? Any help is greatly appreciated!

No need to unroot. You just need a stock recovery.

Let me try to clarify the confusion based on my experience with the Lollipop OTA update. First, you need to remember that, during the OTA update, the software checks for two things: 1) the version of the recovery; and 2) whether any system files has been modified (described in my earlier post).
As a result, you only need stock recovery (from 4.4.4 or 5.0.1) to initiate the OTA update (as mentioned by the other poster). If no system files were altered as a result of your root access, your OTA should finish without errors.
However, root itself and what people do after they have root access often mean some system files were altered. Hence, they need to use either RUU or TWRP backup to restore they all files back to the factory version.
Finally, as for RUU vs. TWRP:
The RUU or TWRP version must match that to your carrier version of M8. The RUU is the better option, but not available for all carrier versions. When RUU is not available, people rely on TWRP nandroid backup generated by other users.
Bottom line or my advice:
First do a TWRP backup before you start anything. If anything goes wrong, you can always revert back to the working status as it is now.
To begin, go back to stock recovery, and see if the OTA update will go through. If not, you will see red triangle. Then hold Vol + and tap power button once to see the error messages. See my post above. If you ran into the same error as I did, you'll know what to do (RUU or TWRP backup to return to stock).

A very well-worded answer
This is a public service announcement to save people headaches. RTFM. You cannot ever now, or in the past, take an OTA with a custom recovery. You must always have a stock recovery and system to do so. Period. If you do install a custom recovery, freeze the update center with Titanium, Rom Toolbox, or the like, so that you will remember you have a custom recovery and not accidentally take an update.

So what is the simplest way to update to the OTA firmware with a phone that is rooted with twrp, and a custom ROM? Is there a way to disable twrp without having to un-root? That way it might be possible to update to the OTA firmware. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

.this is referring to stock software updates, unless it's updates of the rom, which you won't even receive if you're on a custom rom...to update a custom rom, you just download the updated version, or the OTA if the rom is so capable, and flash it in twrp like the first version you downloaded

Wait for a flashable zip for TWRP. You can revert to stock to take an OTA. Being rooted is not a problem per se, it's the custom recovery and having non stock roms. In theory you could flash the stock recovery and bootloader and then take an OTA. However, not having stock system/apps could likely create havoc

I tried to reflash to stock recovery to do the OTA and unsuccessfully tried the below mentioned Stock recoveries from XDA developers.

and
stock+recovery+1.12.771+recovery.img
I see a Red triangle with an exclamation mark when I try to run the Stock Recovery.
Can anybody suggest any solutions

Those recoveries are way too old to work, it needs to match your current firmware (hboot, etc.), which sounds like Lollipop Android 5.0 (those are Kitkat Android 4.4.2 recoveries).
I assume you have the stock Lollipop ROM? Since you need the stock ROM (in addition to stock recovery) to OTA. And trying to install the recent Stagefright OTA?

You need to install 4.20.771.2 stock recovery or the one that from OTA 4.25.771.6.
And make sure you have a non-rooted stock 4.20.771.2 ROM running on your device

Do I need to unroot my Device which is already on Stock Rom to do an OTA.I have'nt messed with any default apps that came with the device. I am already receiving the notifications to do an OTA on the device.
I could'nt find the stock recovery.Can you please give me a link to the same.

Definitely you need a non-rooted stock ROM.
If you unroot your ROM, most likely it won't work either as the root itself change some files.
Restore the system part only from a non-rooted backup to avoid problem. You can keep your data.
Install stock recovery then do OTA
Check link in my signature for all files that you need.
And FYI .. this OTA will upgrade your system to 5.0.2 but unfortunately the stagefright fix only fix 6/7 vulnerabilities
