Anyone thinking about returning the S6 Edge? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Hi, I got the Galaxy S6 Edge 32gb white ( which glowing around the edges in dark room which looks ugly) yesterday from T-Mobile. And not that impressed with it , Im coming from Moto X 2014 and Htc One M8 . This phone is very cumbersome to use and its slower opening apps and the usage compared to the Moto X 2014 and The Htc One M8. So im thinking of returning it. Anyone thinking its not that much better then other flagships?

I was thinking of returning mine as well, coming from an M8 due to the slowness. I restored to factory using Kies and the method described in one of the threads and my phone is remarkably better. Like 10x better. I don't know if it's a newer build or what but the phone is night and day.
Just a thought to try.

Gonna go for it. Does data get erased?

Nope. S6 Edge is the best phone to date for me. I've pretty much owned them all.

Yes, it's a FULL wipe! I also didn't like the performance or how hot it was running. After the flash, it's very enjoyable.
Use Samsung Smart Switch and watch the video here for instructions.

No way. This phone beats the brakes off other phones. I came from the Note 4 (another great device) and even still I'm extremely pleased. If it's slow, do a full factory reset as others suggested. It shouldn't be slow.

Yes i might return it for the regular s6. Phone is awesome screen is awesome camera is awesome. But the edges are annoying. Mainly the glare from light where the edges curve is really bad. Holding the phone is just not comfortable. Coming from a G3. Maybe you all can help me make up my mind. Right now I'm thinking the edge diaplay is just too gimmicky with no real purpose.

I personally have found the edge to be useful in everyday situations while holding worth the palm detection or swiping in from a hamburger menu

Well I can say now that I restored via smartswitch method(although failed to pull the firmware) Battery life is much much better. Letting it charge up and testing out. I did not reroot just disabled apps.

Mine's been perfect so far. I find it very comfortable to use. I was skeptical even when purchasing it, but it's been great.

Are you saying it did not download the firmware and install it, or you just failed to make a copy of the firmware?

That's odd. I wonder how anything got changed then. Maybe a deeper factory reset?
EDIT: OOPS, I answered before I understood your answer... Glad it's working better now.

I feel like this is a slower phone I swear, lol.

I'm liking a lot now that battery is fixed.

Hey when you restored it to factory, is that removing the build updates?, or just factory resetting the phone. And why would it be faster?

It removes everything. Full wipe. and re-flashes it all to stock. I have no idea why it would help, but it helped me immensely.

Interesting. I have no lag and excellent performance (although not any better than my Moto Maxx) but am losing 5% an hour over night and through the day at times of no usage. During times of usage the thing drops like a rock. Obviously I have problems but a quick look didn't reveal any wake locks or other obvious issues. I've been kinda holding off to see if chainfire gets a fix out for the edge auto-root but the ads are about killing the brain cells that didn't die when I last looked at how fast my battery is dropping. I may have to give the smartswitch reset a go. I've got fourteen days...

Returned it. Got the S6 no edge.

I'm kind of in the same boat. One of my employees got the G3 (I currently have the G2 and love it but I'm cursed bc my brain thinks I always have to have latest awesome sauce phone. ugh) and his battery life has been horrendous. I'm talking half of what the G2 can do. I know that QHD display will chew battery and all but that seems overly ridiculous. In the span of an hour he went from 100% to 82%. I checked his device for every possible thing that could be causing it and found nothing abnormal. His android system usage is at a constant 47%. I went through apps he didn't use and disabled what I could (he's not rooted. Doesn't really know much about android but I converted him with my constant iPhone bashing =D) without Titanium Backup and from what I can tell it just seems like the stock software of the G3 really isn't optimized all that well for performance v battery life. Nowhere near what the G2 accomplished. It's disappointing bc the device looks amazing but if the phone drains that rapidly for seemingly no reason I am going to hold off until they hopefully release a software update to fix the drain. It may very well be he got unlucky and got a lemon battery or it could be LG didn't put a large enough battery in the device (only 200 mAh larger than the G2) to handle that screen. I'm kind of leery of the device now. I am waiting to see more user reviews of the device. A lot of review from tech sites keep saying the battery life is good but not great. I don't consider a device barely making it through an entire work day with limited use good.

If his android system is using that much battery there's something turned on that shouldn't be. I highly doubt an OEM would go backwards in terms of optimization. Android system could be a number of things like WiFi scanning always on or location reporting on high accuracy.

Im aware the device shouldnt be throwing those system totals out but it is. Ive checked everything and compared his G3 settings to my G2 (running Optimus G3) and changed literally everything to my setup. Didnt make a difference. Its weird man. Ive never seen system usage like that and then havent be able to find the culprit.
I had a note 3 and the G3 was a big upgrade. Is much better and for me the battery life is better. The UI is much better looking and there is less lg bloat in the system then tw has. My wife's s5 has a baby monitor progress running stock. Who needs this? It's just dumb little things like that that bother me about tw.

I wouldn't mind the heating or lag, the random shutdown on the other hand is really something to be aware of. Happened twice to me this day...:-\
Battery life is great to me. 15-20hrs of standby with 5.5hrs of screen on time.

I've had the G3 since it was released, get almost 2 days or more battery after disabling a bunch of apps, till they get root for the Sprint variant.

Just FWIW, you can't judge battery life on an occasional dip in the percentage. The battery meter isn't perfect. You'll find tons of people finding that the percentage sits at 100% for an hour and then drops quickly after that. The battery didn't simply not drain for an hour and then start draining quickly, it's the software trying to approximate. Go from full charge to near dead and see what happens.
I get great battery life. Only issue I have is the camera. Pics just don't seem that great.

Actually if it was overheating then the phone would automatically shut down to prevent damage, but yes the phone does get hot rather quickly. But I've had glass and aluminum phones before and they always get hot fast since metal retains heat.
Mine ran a lot hotter than a normal glass and metal phone, and it was laggy/jerky. I flashed the stock firmware to it, and now it's smooth and cool.
Here's How:

Smart switch is not working for everyone. Hit or a miss thing.
My phone heats up to 44 C
What is the Warning Level is it safe till 45 or 50 Celsius ?
It happens when
1) On use of Google Maps while driving
2) Charging
3) When i use Sandisk OTG, to the extent that it stop the Transfer & freezes
4) Even if i Record Videos sometimes
5) While wireless charging
This is really bad Never had such a Issue
I agree with some of the sentiments here that the device can seemingly get pretty warm - especially when I tweaking things or using apps that use a lot of CPU or using the camera for too long. But I do believe a lot of it is related to the aluminum/glass case - I believe Samsung is basically taking advantage of the case as a though it were a heatsink - releasing all the heat into your hand/pocket/air.
This is truly the first phone i've had that manages to stay under 100° F even when cpu frequency is locked to the maximum and I'm playing very gpu-intensive games, provided that i'm not charging the battery and the phone is not in an unusually warm environmnt like a hot car. I should mention that i'm rooted and lots of preloaded software has been removed. I would download some sort of process monitor and check it to see if there's a misbehaving app to blame if this is happening regularly.

Hey,
I saw that you posted a solution when someone had problems with his S6 edge overheating. I've an S6 and I think I might have the same problem.
I was wondering if you could spare some time to help me. I posted my problem here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/help-s6-cpu-getting-hot-t3180011
I used Antatu benchmark and CPU temperature to test my phone and it got to 84.0 C twice, once when it was testing my CPU to it's fullest and once when it was testing game performance.
So I was wondering if you could run the test as well and tell me what temperature you got so I can compare. Thanks
I haven't tried your method yet but I will tomorrow.

For the record, mine just hit 85C while running AnTuTu. As far as daily use, it made a world of difference on my phone when I flashed the stock firmware the first time. The phone was terribly hot in my pocket when I was not doing anything, and it was SUPER laggy when I was. Not something I expected from this phone. After the flash, it was a Beast and ran MUCH cooler. It would get warm still when doing intensive tasks, but that would be expected from an Octa-core phone in my opinion. It does not get uncomfortably hot anymore, like it used to though. I would imagine it went WAY above 85C when it got hot before, because it was actually hard to hold at times.
If you have not flashed it since new, I would highly recommend it. I know it's a pain, but it's a one time thing that you never have to do again, and the benefit MIGHT be large. No guarantees, as you may not have the same issue, but I've received a lot of reports from people who have done it and they say it breathed new life into their phones. For me personally, it was DEFINITELY not a placebo affect. It was night and day.
With all that said, I've got my S6 Edge up for sale right now as I've moved to Apple for a little while. I continually jump around, and T-Mobile offered the iPhone 6 for $15/mo and I can trade it in 3 times in the next 18 months for free and keep paying $15/mo for the newest phone. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference in the iPhone 6s. If it sucks, I'll be trading it in shortly for another Android phone.
PS: AnTuTu final score: 69314!!!! Wow!!!
One more thing. To eliminate ALL lag and slowdown, I replaced the Samsung Launcher with the Google Launcher. What a difference that alone makes! Seriously, try that one thing. It's huge. The Samsung Launcher has some issue somewhere that they still need to address.

It should. As long as Smart Switch can recognize your phone model and download the Correct Firmware, the Flash WILL help the Heating and Lagging problem. If your phone is not recognized, then Smart Switch will not do anything. It's worth a try.
For me it happens especially when im playing arround with that samsung theme store build in app. I don't know why that app needs so much power to have that effect on the phone but for sure its something samsung needs to look at.
For sure they need to re-design that app from the scratch. Its like the "my first homepage" of theme apps.

WOW

Good evening all i purchased my new lg g4 today in tan and its better than expected,im just wondering what you all think of it if anybody has 1 and was it as expected thanks for readig
I think almost every member on G4 has it. It's great that you're satisfied with your purchase but there is no need to create an extra topic just for this.
Nah its a good topic. This particular's phone community is really bad tho. I have never seen a community bashing others in every single topic. You guys cant wait for root and constantly are putting down new members.
Really...? If you dont like his post, simply ignore it and move the **** on. Back on topic: I really love the G4. It has a great camera, very fast and responsive (had a few touch issues but it was fixed with a software update) great battery life when you disable gps/data when theyre not needed.
Only downside is the design which doesnt look as good after awhile next to the iPhone and Samsung's premium look but you get leather back for that!
I have had it for almost 3 months and Im still not sure about it. Sometimes I really hate it sometimes I just like it. Lollipop is the thing that makes me wants to destroy it the most.
@kidpaddle45
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I just came from a galaxy S6 in all its sapphire goodness. The G4 to me is stunningly beautiful. I was holding it next to my wife's platinum gold S6 and ooh that screen ratio is beautiful. Sure it's not the brightest kid on the block, but who needs to squint to show that off? With accessibility>vision>Screen color adjustment. I can match the colors of sexy amoled just fine. Yes, this is mine and only mine until the Spring flagships are released.
Off topic, the Xperia Z2 Tablet sub is a joke with Real condescending folks.

Sadly this is the norm for these forums. So many people are skilled at faulting someone's post and talking to them like they're in kindergarten. My favorite is "USE SEARCH FIRST! ! THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN ASKED! ! " As if no one and their grandma has ever heard of Google or has any idea that the forum search tool often sucks.
Right now I really like the phone but it has so much less support than my G3 on these forums plus so many people having strange issues like random boot loops of death on totally unmodified phones. On top of this my variant has no official KDZ/TOT file released
I've had my G4 for about two weeks, and overall I'm happy with it. Battery life could be better, but I think part of it is something strange going on with my phone causing fairly rapid drain every now and then. May try doing a factory reset to see if that helps
It's sort of a love/hate relationship with my G4. While I love the camera and form factor of the phone, I hate the battery life, overheating, and severe lack of development. I'm really hoping Marshmallow will fix some of the issues.
If they could improve the battery life, heating issues, and random performance lag, this would be damn near a perfect phone, even un-rooted. I had the G3 and HATED it. I like the G4 significantly better. I'm curious to see what they do with the G5 next year.
Mine overheats a bit, and I'm not even playing games.
Sent from my LG G4 using Tapatalk
Mine doesn't. I mean, when I play it does a bit, but it's expected.
I'm about to root my phone (I always do that, this is the first phone that I have for more than 2 weeks unrooted!!), but I do like it a lot (mainly camera).
It's really nice one (came from Galaxy S4).
What bothers me now:
1) When I use ProShot, it's draining the battery a LOT, as well as overheating (I'll check it with the DEV)
2) I do like using Google Now. However, with G4, it keeps activating GPS a LOT, more than usual!! Then, Android System shows as biggest battery drainer.
Overall, very happy.
Cheers.

It's the 'General' section so it's OK to post things like that here, I guess.
But to be honest... The title of this thread could have been more professional
I came from a Nexus 5, which I dropped unfortunately... So I was kind of forced to buy the G4 a few weeks ago.
I'm quite satisfied with the whole package. The community support could be better (Maybe I'm spoiled by my 2 years Nexus experience?!)
But I think we have one of the best phones on the market and the community is growing!
Wow. That's what I said too when I took it out of the box.
issues that irk me at the moment
-battery life is horrid even with mods
-heats up a bit and like someone stated above thats not ven when youre playing games.(also flashed heat mod)
-on screen buttons which is my biggest peeve, i dont understand why people love them and they are the norm, they take up screen real estate. i constantly accidently hit them all the time when im doing things in apps. its just my personal experience but in general a clusterFuk for me.
other than that I love everything else.

Does a reboot improve anything ?
There is no overheating, if it overheats then the device will shut down. SOP on Android.
You have some processes that generating heat. if you're shooting 4k this will happen.
If screen brightness is on max and you're doing something intensive it will happen.
@One Twelve I wouldn't count using Tapatalk as intensive task. Screen brightness level is usually around 40-70%.
The workaround that I use is using power saving mode but the display is dimmer. It is far from ideal, but this way, I can easily last the day without having my battery being drained by the the two cortex A57.

I believe battery life depends on what phone u came from. It's will be seem as good battery if u came from s4 but bad if u come from note 4/5.

Kinda the same here. Love the hardware, not a fan of the software. CM12 is coming along very well, though, and as soon as Bluetooth is fixed (so I can use my Moto 360), I'll be moving to that as my daily driver. From limited use, it seems very stable!
One major issue I ran into recently was constant power cycling. Even after 3 factory resets, it would power cycle non-stop. I ended up having to get it replaced.
Strangely enough, my friend's G4 started doing the same thing on the exact same day as mine. Both Verizon variants.
I dont get alot of the comments here. I have great battery life especially on standby. Software wise g4 has less bloatware than samsung and i accredidate that to the good performance and lag free experience when the processor is one gen behind current flagships. The form factor in the hand is good too curved back and back buttons are great and took me no time to get used to coming from samsung. If i have a gripe it could be the touchscreen responsiveness butits nowhere near as bad as some people make out.

Overheating --> Network/Device Lag? Marshmallow, M9

I know my way around Android well enough I could probably teach a class. I've been excited for the Marshmallow update for my Verizon M9, mostly for the security update. Now I've got it, and udderly hate it. Not only is this marshmallow über soft and squishy, it's somehow managed to swallow the majority of my CPU--much like BOB from Monsters vs Aliens. Actually, the update is more like BOB than a delicious couple of calories. Tremendous lag from god knows where, constant freezing and other **** when in hpm--whether it be plugged in or not--which often crashes apps altogether or causes a reboot, keyboard latency of about 1.5seconds, network disconnecting when the device exceeds 120℉, ooh!, and the cherry on top: loss of data. I use my phone for both business/class-related stuff and for gaming/pleasure(shh, creeps) because I'm too broke to buy anything else. The front-facing speakers get glitcy and doing that pausing crap like when you drive outta radio range in a car. This was never a problem with Lollipop, but is making Android a living hell to deal with. MHL has yet to work on Marshmallow, and instead simply crashes the phone. Again. Can't find ANYthing ANYwhere about this. Both Verizon and HTC are refusing to talk to me directly about it; keep getting passed to the next rep, who tries to put me through their template of troubleshooting steps. Wiping cache partition worked...for all of ten minutes. If that. HTC wants to take my phone for two weeks, which won't work due to classes.
Full stock M9. I use App Mgr III for new moving apps quickly, App Cache Cleaner because I'm lazy, and Greenify to kill some stuff that I've got, e.g., Ingress, Skype, snapchat. Greenify does NOT allow killing of bloatware/pre-installed crap, so let me tape the mouths of those twits shut now. Most pre-installed apps, including all but two of the Verizon things, are disabled.
The game I notice the most trouble on is Walking War Robots, can't tell if it has to do with graphics or the processor itself. Chrome browser is quite laggy; Drive is almost unresponsive as is Docs; have lost quite a bit of data from Microsoft Word, both saved and documents being worked on. Reception is also quite a bit worse with the Marshmallow update, calls being dropped more frequently and location often having trouble pinpointing me on high-accuracy.
As I do NOT have a computer, reseting the device is not an option. The recaptcha thingy took almost 30 seconds to load; on Lollipop, they took less than five.
I fully agree with you. My experience with marshmallow has only been negative so far.
1) Incredibly Laggy. Back in the day, installing a kitkat or lollipop rom, the phone would be super fluid and would only slightly lag when installing the 50 apps. God forbid when I was installing marshmallow it seriously hung like 5 seconds and was going at maximum 10fps.
2) Heat. The phone appears to get even warmer now. How is that even possible?
3) Battery Life. My battery appears to be 10% worse. I used to only charge it at night but now I have to charge it after work around 8pm.
I do have some hope though. I'm waiting for Neo or Santod to compile a debloated rom and hoping that clears up these issues.
I was experiencing terrible lag, it seems to be settling down now. I was overheating, but that seems to have settled as well. Biggest problem is that I'm only charging at 550mA with a 2A quick charger. That's new, and totally unacceptable. Also, HTC emojis are gone. All I have are the stupid jellybean/potato looking guys and I can't decipher which emotion they are trying to relay. Chics dig emojis, and here I am feeling emoji blind.
Edit: Lag is still terrible
In the same boat.. this update is not good. This phone is so laggy and slow now it's like my OG Droid 1 from years ago. Cleared cache after installing.. waited the obligatory 45 minutes to rebuild stuff. Uninstalled the bloatware I could and it literally took minutes to do a simple uninstall. Hasn't got any better in the last day at all. If it doesn't get better in the next day or two I'll have to go back to Lollipop. This is probably the most buggy, laggy, battery killing Android update I've seen on any of my Android phones since Droid 1 days. Anyone else getting this or know of any kind of fix? I just can't imagine HTC and VZW pushed this out if problems like these are a common occurrence.
I FIGURED IT OUT GUYS?!!
So ViperROM just put out version 4.3.0.
I always thought ViperROM was some weird bloated ROM with weird features so i never gave it a go, but its basically a slimmed down HTC SENSE with a small amount of tweaks. My phone is BUTTERY smooth now. =)
Yeah, I've thought about pulling the trigger w/ Venom rom but I wanted to stay just stock rooted on my M9. If you install viper rom do you have to factory reset? I just despise doing that so much and don't want to if I don't have to. If it doesn't get better in the next day or two, I'll probably give viper a go with a full wipe.
On a side note, is this a fairly common issue with this update and the M9?? Some are saying in the other thread theirs is nice and smooth.
I was having many heat/lag issues as described above when I flashed the zip dirty or clean. I had to do a RUU with the MM update. Now it's super smooth. Still get lots of heat when the system is booting up for the first time/settling in. But after that, no issues.
how is everyone's battery with this? Mine is absolutely horrible! Just this morning sitting here.. 3 hours, down to 78% already and haven't even done anything very intensive with it. Few messages on Whatsapp, texts, a picture. This phone sucks right now. Yesterday only lasted about 10 hours with normal use. Before I would get at least a normal day out of it without worrying. What the hell is going on with MM that is sucking the life out of this phone?

Yea you will have to root. The thing is, Venom is literally a STOCK rooted M9 that has all bloat cut away and 1 small app for additional features (like changing status bar and power button for flashlight.). It is well worth it.

Try Venom Rom. I had so many issues with Verizon MM that I gave up on it.

I've also had better luck with Venom. I just flashed it about 8 hours ago but the lag is gone (so far). Charging on a quick charger still sucks. Haven't been able to gauge battery life yet. No overheating.
Update: My battery is discharging at -1650mA.

Keep checking. It shouldn't be discharging that much unless your tethering on full brightness

It spikes and dips. On average it drains around around 600-800mA. No tethering, 50% brightness. Never had this issue til M. Crazy.

Anyone having problems after the stock VERIZON MM OTA needs to do a FACTORY RESET.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
I can barely get my phone to charge. I'm going back to L. If I nand back, do I need to flash 5.1 firmware or isn't hate covered in the nand?

This.
Guys, I finally did do the factory reset despite how much I hate having to do that. From both inside android, and from within TWRP just to be sure. It made the world of difference. I know having to re-install and set up all your apps is a huge pain the ass, but it seriously made a huge difference. Mine lasted 1 day, 13 hours with my typical usage and was still at like 9-10% I think when I re-charged it. Everything is back to working really smooth, no lag, and no heating issues. Something left over from before doesn't play nice at all with the new ROM. Hope this might help if you guys decide to stay on stock.

Mmmm, but my original post was about the M9. Not the M8. They're similar, but the M8 has a superior processor. Imo it'd be amaz to have my custom (and unfortunately shattered) M8's processors and RAM in my M9. Fix all these issues. But, alas.....

In scale, that prolly equates to about 70% of my normal day, minus gaming. Right now I'm getting through about 30% of my day, minus gaming, before needing a charge. Even with QC, charging takes about 40% longer than it did on Lollipop.
Still neither factory reset nor rooting is an option, as I have nothing to back my stuff up on. No, the local library isn't kind enough to me for that lol.

Just trade p20 pro for this and a laptop, need advice on battery replacement

Looks like my xl 2 is in need of a battery, she drains from 100--->80 in the first hour I'm home. I've found many online but thought I would ask the community if anyone has found a reputable dealer for replacement batteries. I've had issue with past iPhone batteries being less than stellar.
Also ****ing love this phone, couldn't have gotten rid of my P20 fast enough!
Try rooting and using Flash Kernel. Insane battery life.

Just wasn't a fan of the stock EMUI and then there wasn't much in the world of roms or kernels. I mean project treble was nice, I loved the havoc rom as it ran smooth and had some nice customization. It just didnt have the notch figured out yet or some other P20 pro specifics fingerprint etc. I wasn't blown away by the battery by any stretch even since, day one. The camera was however quite impressive, the night mode especially and great portraits. Soon as I got my hands on this pixel though, fell in love and not sure why it just, its just a nice device haha.

Will try that not before heading out for work, I just can tell by a few small features on the device that its not spring chicken so my assumption is its at least a year plus old.
*** Edit
So after literally download and flashing that kernel, typing just this edit using my phone I'm down 3%. Maybe it takes a bit to optimize I'm not really sure. I will say it does at least last me an entire day! (On the Stock kernel I mean)

You're Pixel 2XL can't be a year plus old. They we're announced October 4th of last year, so they weren't available even a year ago.

Oh well then lol, I guess I'm the idiot!
Just seems weird the battery drain is incredible. Maybe my expectations are simply just high, either way very pleased with the device

You're not an idiot. Well, I don't know I've never met you IRL. You could be, I guess, LOL.
Seriously, though, not doubting your bad battery life. It's likely a rogue app. Or maybe really poor radio signal so your phone is constantly polling for a stronger signal.
You could always try running in safe mode, which disables all 3rd party apps. If battery life improves, then you know it's an app causing the drain.
If that doesn't work, try running in airplane mode. This will always increase battery life, but if it takes care of your abnormal drain, then you know it's related to signal strength.
All else fails, do a factory reset, don't restore anything, and run it for a while with no 3rd party apps.
If that fails to fix it, it could simply be a hardware issue. Its an electronic device. They fail and do funky things sometimes. You could always call Google and see if they will RMA it for a bad battery. Or if you have a UBreakIFix store near you, go talk to them. They are a Google partner and the one here in town is very knowledgeable.

The battery life on the Pixel 2 XL should be better than that to be honest. Especially if you have Android Pie. Let me know how it goes? What is your SOT?

On my Pixel 2 XL i get about 2.5 hrs SOT with 70% remaining.
Heres a screenshot I guess that's not awful it's just seems like heavy drain when using it. I think I'm just being picky
I have replaced my 2xl display because it was shattered. I tried to replicate the original waterproofing sealing by using the black liquid adhesive.
That looks just about right. Both "full charge lasts about" and the SOT. At least that's what I get typically with my use.
