[Q] No root tether for VZW M9 ? - Verizon HTC One (M9)

Hi folks.
So i'm looking at having to replace my DNA. I usually root all my phones but honestly the only reason i do is because i have an unlimited data plan still and i want wifi tethering without being robbed. Unlimited in my opinion means unlimited, VZW can go do horribly inappropriate things to themselves regarding their definition of unlimited.
From what I have read i'm not certain if you can even get the boot loader unlocked, get s-off and root on the VZW m9. It's very confusing (ther than mailing your phone to someone with a java card, and it's bad enough i'm having to live without a phone, i can mail it to someone and wait for it to come back)
But since all i want is tethering I'm wondering if i even have to bother. Does anyone know if any of the no-root tether apps work on this phone?

Use FoxFi

Thanks,
I was just curious I know at one point VZW updated phones so foxfi didn't work. Nice to know it's an option again.

If you don't need wifi tether, there is also clockwork tether wish doesn't require root.

I tried using Fox Fi....no such luck.

I ended up ditching VZW and grabbing a developer edition from HTC.

Are you still with Verizon as your carrier? I didn't think they allowed phones not branded VZW on their network...

Tether
If you REALLY want tether, download and install the Fluent custom rom located in Android Development here.
It's tether works perfectly and it's a smooth running rom as well.

FoxFi and PdaNet+ need root for wifi tether. They are fine if you only need USB or bluetooth tether.

Yes, you must be either: S-OFF, Rooted or Bootloader unlocked and with a custom recovery.

Wifi hot spot? VZW...

Hey can someone confirm whether the stock wifi hotspot feature works on the Verizon galaxy nexus without having to add a tethering plan?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
When I select to turn it on, it runs through a "checking for subscription" then pops up an Error window that I'm not authorized to run it and have to call Customer Service. It was the first thing I tried as soon as I walked out of the VZW store this morning.

I'd like to know this as well. Chances are though, you have to be rooted and the hotspot app will have to be hacked for it to be used without detection check by VZW. I am with Sprint OG Samsung Epic, and these were the necessary steps to get Sprint hotspot to work without having a plan. I am sure a dev will be able to get it done in time. In the meantime, suggest rooting and using either Barnacle tether or Wifi Tether, or if you want to stay stock: PDANet.
After root - wired tether will work.
After root - WiFi tether will NOT work. It has the 'blocktether' thing on there.

Ouch. Any available apps/workarounds to enable wireless tether? This is a make-or-break issue for me right now in terms of getting the phone.
Framework patch. Give it a week. Or just pay for it.

At this moment, you'll need an LTE rom or patch that disables the 'blocktether' methinks. I am running stock for the rest of the week, so I cannot test - apologies.

Just root your phone. There is no downside to that.

That's not the problem. Not being able to tether could potentially be a dealbreaker for some people (myself included).
Its blocked. You've got to root and remove the software they have for tracking tethering. Or wait for a CDMA custom ROM to come out that has unblocked tethering.

Yup. You'll just have to get a rom that has tethering open for all of our hearts' content!
Anyone tried this app ht tp://goo.gl/LZCZO or the paid version ? Can't believe VZW sucks so bad, makes sense now why the phone was delayed so long... Google arguing against VZW breaking and crippling their beautiful OS. But I just bought one this morning and being delivered tomorrow.

Using a 3rd party app doesn't remove Verizon's tracking software. They'll still see you're doing it based on my experiences w/ VZW phones...
I'm assuming you guys have tried Google's Wireless Tether app. No dice?

Not letting people steal bandwidth is not crippling the OS. Don't get me wrong I think paying for tethering is beyond retarded but it is a paid service that they offer there is no reason for them to give it away for free.

People aren't "stealing" bandwidth. They're paying for it and using it. This isn't even an argument in a world of capped data plans. If you pay for 2GB or 4GB or 10GB+, you're buying that bandwidth from VZW. Its yours to use. And carriers are being beyond ridiculous, forcing consumers to pay for data twice.
And it is crippling (albeit thats a bit dramatic) the OS. ICS (and 2.2, 2.3) has wired/wireless tethering enabled. Removing that, is removing a feature that used to make the OS whole.
Just to clear the air -
Currently - no matter what App you use, you cannot WiFi tether.
Verizon is blocking ALL WiFi tether - you will need to remove the check.
Thanks for the update. What are the chances that this check can be removed? I know people with the Bionic were having problems tethering (still not sure if they can).
This is a deal breaker for me, so I'm hoping it isn't something too complicated for the devs to remove.
P.S. Let's not turn this into a morality thread. This is a place to discuss whether or not you can get WiFi tethering working without paying extra for it.
This is a huge problem, I need to tether by next Thursday.

[Q] Questions about unlocking HTC One M8, using unlimited data for mobile hotspot

Hello folks, Ive lurked here for a while and gotten great info and am hoping to get some help here. I apologize if some of what Im asking is obvious to you folks but it isnt to me so here I am. I tried HoFo but got no help there.
Ive been using factory unlocked Sony Xperias for a while (Z, ZL, Z Ultra)so never had this issue before, but I have an HTC One M8 coming and unfortunately its ATT branded, though I bought it from a private seller and not ATT themselves. Im also grandfathered into unlimited data for many years now, and with my Sonys can turn on mobile hotspot anytime and use my data with ATT none the wiser. Now Im assuming since I was dumb enough to buy an ATT phone, I will be told to contact ATT once I pop in my SIM and try to turn on mobile hotspot, is this correct? If so, will unlocking the phone resolve this issue? As of now ATT has no idea Ive bought this phone, nor did they ever even recognize my Sonys because they never sold them, but since this is an ATT M8, Im assuming theyll know immediately what Im using, identify my plan and lock me out. Im hoping I can get around that.
I also imagine since its an ATT phone it will have all sorts of abilities locked out and a lot of fluff added in. How can I get the features unlocked? Is there anyway to buy a carrier branded phone and get it to be similar to one that was bought factory unlocked from the beginning and never branded?
Any help and advice would be appreciated and TIA
Ok, if I asked too much stuff there that was obvious to you but not me, can someone just please tell me if unlocking the bootloader will at least unlock the mobile hotspot function for me so I can turn it on?
Well, just unlocked, rooted, s-off and twrpd my first phone. What a b*tch, lol! But I had to learn one of these days. Sadly, still cant get the native or any other mobile hotspot app to work though. I saw a thread about a VZW M8 hack but still cant seem to find anything for this ATT thing. No one even willing to talk to me?

You can try wiFi Tether Router. Its in the play market but you have to pay $2.50 for it. Has worked for me. I don't think this app can be dectected by the carriers like ATT because it does't use the native hotspot of the phone.
Youll have to flash a custom rom that has this feature [email protected] and is debloated, xarrier build will block it and tell you to conract them.....
This is not going to help you at all, but I pay the extra $30 per month. I use up to 50GB of data each month tethering, and I want to make sure the my carrier doesn't block me.
So now that I've done my service by telling you to do the right thing, you use to be able to go in using SQLLite and turn off the checker. For VZW it was around line 149 - 160. Can't remember. I would think you could do that for AT&T. Maybe someone knows? Or maybe AT&T doesn't work like that any more, of maybe KK doesn't work like that any more.

Will the 5X have tether restrictions out of the box?

Just curious if people think we can tether freely out of the box on the 5X. I'm on Verizon, grandfathered Unlimited Data and I know on the Moto X Pure 2015 you could just pop your sim card in and tether without editing anything in the build.prop or whatever file it was.
I know there is no Verizon software baked in to the rom obviously, but I've heard default android can include a subscription check or something similar in the tethering for this sort of thing.
I believe tethering restrictions are based on the carrier back-end and not the phone. On T-Mobile USA, I was able to tether with my N6 without any problems.
Verizon actively restricts tethering on their branded devices by locking the bootloader. As the nexus is not branded by or sold by verizon, you should be able to tether without issue.

Just got my 5x today and unfortunately no, tethering does not work (on Verizon - I also have the grandfathered unlimited plan). I'm still looking into a work around (you can use FoxFi, which doesn't require rooting), but I'd rather have it through the ROM. I am considering rooting. However, I'm not sure if we know the long-term consequences of the setting off the QFuse.
Anyone know of a way to tether (without rooting - until we know more about QFuse)?
I am able to set up wifi hotspots from mine on AT&T without issue. I don't have a device handy to test out USB tethering but I don't know why that would be any different.

Did you actually try using FoxFi? Mine does not work. (I also have Verizon on the grandfathered unlimited plan.) I get an "android.permission.CONNECTIVITY_INTERNAL error".
I don't have my 5x yet to test on my own, but I did come across this and hopefully it works.

Verizon HTC 10 FoxFi WiFi Tether

I know some of you have pre ordered their Verizon HTC 10 , which is supposed to arrive on May 5th.
I would like to know if the Foxfi wifi teher without root works on HTC 10 for people who are still on the Unlimited Data Plan.
Thank you
Yeah I need to find this out too. In case my unlocked version doesn't work on VZW, I will have to send it back and get the VZW version and use FOX-Fi until S-off/ Root is achieved.
looks like some people have the verizon version in their hand today, I hope somebody can post the results

Confirmed as of now NOT working with FoxFi WiFi hotspot. Bluetooth and USB worked? Perhaps with a FoxFi update??

The guy stated that it was the Verizon version.. But you only need it if you are still on UDP. Otherwise I have been told that built in native hotspot just works when on a ****e tiered plan, since they pretty much know you are never going to use it for anything really significant other than occasional browsing on another device. Once FoxFi is working on Verizon version, Ill be picking it up.

Anyone Successful in Activating HotSpot on a locked Verizon phone?

I'm curious if anyone out there has been successful in getting their HotSpot to work without the subscription.
I work off of a corporate and locked phone so I am trying to get my hotspot working as it is a grandfathered unlimited plan.
I haven't been successful so far, so who has been? What did you do in order to get your hotspot working?
In the past I had a Note 2, Note 3, and LG G4 all had to have a special modded app in order to get the hotspot to work. I was hoping that something like this would come around, but I think I will have to wait until a successful Root method is available
I have the unlocked version that I bought through best buy. The hotspot works on mine w/out subscription. I am also on the grandfathered unlimited plan.

Awesome! Glad it works with the Unlocked version.
I am more interested in those with Locked phones though, as that is what I currently have and I would really like to find a functioning work around.
I need the same. I didn't want to risk losing verizon features so I didn't order the unlocked model from Sammy.

Holy crap, well that works.
Too bad I keep this thing in an Otterbox Defender :/
I guess when I am really desperate I will do it, thanks for the trick!
I can get it to turn off, but it shuts off after a few seconds every time.
Edit - just tried it again and it's sticking now. Weird.
I have this working and got it from the note 8 forums. See my other posts.
I bought my note 8 from verizon and was told it was unlocked already. Is this true? How can i check? My point being is i paid for hotspot with my verizon s8 plus bc i couldnt get a work around working and i HAVE to have hotspot for sure. So im asking because if it works without subscription on an unlocked verizon note 8 then is it worth canceling the hospot i pay for every month to try and see if it works on mine? I guess i just need to know how to see if my phone is unlocked like they claimed 1st. Any suggestions out there?

Flash the unlocked firmware to your phone. Works great and no messing with sim cards. You can always flash back if you want to.
^ Yeah do what he said. Easy fix , Sim card trick is too annoying. I flashed the unlocked firmware onto the Verizon Note 8 as well and am rooted and can use the hotspot care-free now.

To flash the unlocked firmware, do you have to be on a specific firmware already? I'm on AQH7 baseband. Also it says I have a system update to install, but I've been putting it off in case it would prevent me from unlocking or rooting.... I just got the phone two days ago, and it immediately shows this update. I'll keep delaying it. Thanks for the help.
PS, I had the paid version of Foxfi and have been able to tether my phone to the tablet via Bluetooth and it didn't bring up the subscription warning. You have to install pdanet tablet on the tablet or Android device you want to tether to, and both devices would need Bluetooth.
