USB connection not working - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S6

Love the phone, but this is stumping me. When I connect to my PC for mass file transfer (music, etc.) I don't get a notification to allow mounting for media device, etc. It feels like I'm missing something simple, but even Google isn't helping.
On a side note, when I tried quick connect I was asked for the device PIN, but I can't find any hints.
Anyone?

Do you have a screen lock? I've noticed I need to unlock worth fingerprint before it connects.

Yes. Another person mention needing to try different cables, so I made sure to be unlocked, and to use the Samsung cable. Everything worked perfectly.
Thanks for commenting...Steve

USB Device Not Recognised - A NEW APPROACH

I'm hoping the wisdom and expertise I always find on this forum can help me.
I have a new AT&T branded HTC Touch Pro 2 (Tilt 2). After about a week, I began getting the dreaded "USB Device Not Recognized" error any time I plug it in. It never connects properly. I have customized the phone using some of the cool tools I found here, but I have never flashed any portion of the device - it's just the way I got it (WM6.5 CE OS 5.2.21849 Build 21849.5.0.63)
As suggested in various places on this forum, I have:
Soft Reset the phone numerous times
Rebooted the computer (WinXP) many times
Tried several different cables, including the HTC branded extUSB one
Tried different USB ports on my computer(s)
Tried other computers (WinXP)
Tried Windows 7 (WMDC) on another computer
Hard Reset the phone several times (with and without backup restore)
Uninstalled and re-installed ActiveSync 4.5 and the USB drivers
Adjusted various settings, including USB to PC, according to various posts
Cursed extensively in three languages
Regardless of any of this, every time I connect, I get the "USB Device Not Recognized" error within a few seconds.
I am now convinced the problem is hardware, probably the USB connector on the phone. I can't be without the phone until later this month, so I can't get the hardware fixed for a while. But I need to sync.
USB, of course isn't the only way to sync; the phone has Bluetooth. The problem is, I previously reset the device and un/re-installed ActiveSync, removing the pairing at both ends. To sync over Bluetooth, I have to first sync over USB, something I can't do.
MY QUESTION IS THIS:
Does anyone know a way to force ActiveSync to pair over Bluetooth WITHOUT first pairing over USB?
Any assistance anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated

if u go to settings>connections>usb to pc un check enable faster data sync
that might help
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that's one of the first things I tried and it makes no difference (I just tried it again - no joy). I should have listed it in my original post.
The only thing I can think of is to somehow force the phone to sync via Bluetooth WITHOUT having previously synced via USB.
Anyone know if this is possible and, if so, how to do it?
I think you should go and replace your hardware if it has warranty (since you have not flash it). tell them my phone USB connection is not working at all, and let them try it on their computers to make sure, am sure the warranty covers this kind of things
Uh, you're talking about the error on your PC right? This is a common issue. (with pc's) Use another USB port on the computer. That is what I have had to do. It worked fine for both the TP2 and my Wizard before that, but ever since I reloaded the computer I get that error on certain USB ports. have not researched it too heavily yet, but I plan to.
Did you try installing the Windows Mobile Device Center?

Did either of you read the post? It clearly states that he has done BOTH OF YOUR SUGGESTIONS!
Unfortunately, it does sound like this is an issue with bad hardware in the phone. I would suggest getting it replaced under warranty.

I'm having the same problem (vzw TP2). I've already messed with all usb-to-pc settings, tried different USB ports (I've had other USB devices that req'd that), reset my PC (thank you dogbert), reset my device and am currently reinstalling ActiveSync; though I doubt that's the problem because my BT syncs work fine (I don't recall being req'd to do a USB sync intially before doing a BT sync, so I can't really help the OP with that). My device does charge via the USB cable when plugged into the PC. Disk drive mode doesn't work any more than activesync. I also haven't been able to spot it on device manager. Uninstalling it there was one of my first ideas.
I'm wary of using a BT sync to install the official VZW 6.5 ROM, because I've read bad things about ROM interruptions.
I have yet to find by searching anyone who had a real USB sync problem (i.e., one that doesn't get "fixed" by resetting or something equally simple) who has actually posted that they found a solution.
@OP, when do you get a message that you are req'd to sync by USB first? Does activesync tell you or your device?
I have this problem at work where the machine is managed. It just refuses to recognize the device. It's a security issue that we haven't been able to track down yet. I think if you look in one of the logs (forget which) you will see the actual error as it tries to load the driver.
just for the hell of it, try an older version of activesync. just tryin to throw in all possible fixes. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3a-28bf-4cac-a682-58d3233efb4c&DisplayLang=en
try removing the sdcard and syncing?
RE: A New Approach
Thanks for all your responses. Sorry to take so long to respond to your questions and suggestions, I've been away (funerals and CES).
I have read extensively on this subject, have tried EVERYTHING everyone has suggested, and reached the conclusion that this IS a hardware problem, probably involving the USB jack itself.
At least for a while, replacing the hardware is something I can't do.
I want a BT sync for syncing with Outlook (Calendar/Contacts) and for installing software. I currently have NO plans to flash the ROM, I agree that would be risky over BT.
The error appears to be generated by Windows, I don't think it ever gets as far as ActiveSync, ActiveSync always indicates that it is not connected.
Despite that, I did try an earlier version of ActiveSync (can't remember which one); no joy. I tried Windows Mobile Device Center on a Windows 7 machine, but the results were the same: Device Not Recognized.
SO, does anyone know how I can force a BT sync WITHOUT first syncing by USB? That would solve my immediate problem.
Unfortunately I been there and done that.
The only workaround is to use a free exchange server - www.alol.net.br
I put it on my computer's outlook. Copied all the contacts and calender items from my default folders. Synced with ALOL. Installed on my phone, and synced via my wifi.
Not the best solution, but T-Mobile refuse to fix the faulty Diamond motherboard, but it works fine.
The first sync on the phone comes up with a error message, but after that it is fine. You need to manually put in all the settings.
I'm assuming that you have your phone set to "Activesync" + Enable Faster data synchronization on your Phone, under Settings->Connections->USB to PC
Have you tried changing this to "Disk Drive"? Activesync can still connect to the phone and do syncs, etc.
Atleast this is my experience on XP. I've had the same problem on/off after flashing one particular custom ROM.. Don't remember seeing this on my stock Tilt2 ROM.
Have you tried turning your computer Windows' firewall competely off? I read soom were that there seems to be some confict with windows firewall reconizing Activesyc.
None of the settings in the phone, including Disk Drive, make any difference. I'm fairly certain that I've tried them all. None of the settings on the PC side, including Firewall, make any difference either.
The connection never gets to ActiveSync; the USB drivers fail to recognize the device well before that.
As I mentioned earlier, I have become convinced that this is a hardware problem with the phone, probably related to the USB connector. All my research leads there.
The approach I'd like to try is to bypass USB connectivity completely and attempt to sync over Bluetooth. The problem is that ActiveSync refuses to sync over Bluetooth until AFTER the first USB sync (and setup).
Thus my question:
Does anyone know a way to force a sync over Bluetooth WITHOUT first syncing over USB. Registry hack? Settings change? ANYTHING?
Quick note.
This issue started happening to me as well.
And here's the somewhat odd part. With the SD card removed the phone is discovered properly. The original SD card and another spare one inserted in the phone cause the this USB error for me.
Go figure.
(and yes I've tried formatting the sd cards, and factory resetting the phone)
Since I use ubuntu, I'm not really going to spend anymore time figuring out this windows bug. Just needed to apply an update..via windows.
Try this it worked for me

Phone does not recognize it is connected to computer through USB

Good day fine sirs and ma'ams.
I would just like to say I love my Tilt 2, and have had it for a few months now with no real problems and this is about my 4th WM phone.
As of about a month ago, I have been unable to connect or sync the device to my PC.
I have WM Device center 6.1 (the latest from the website)
I am running windows 7
I had been able to sync the phone until about a month ago.
I have unchecked the box in the USB to PC for faster data synchronization.
Essentially, when I plug the phone into the computer, it just acts as if it is connected to a charger. Nothing comes up on the phone and nothing comes up on the computer. It just charges. I have even installed and uninstalled WMDC a couple of times.
I really am at my wits end here.
My question is, is there a fix for this apart from sending the phone in? I am able to flash the phone via the microsd card, and even tried going back to the e2 rom that is as close to the ATT rom as I could find.
I did find the stock rom, but it does not come with the image file, just the ruu.exe I believe. I cannot flash roms via the USB cable either, so I am only able to change things like I said, via the microsd card.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
And yes, I have searched, and have found many other people posting in other threads saying they have the same problem, and everyone just says to uncheck that one box, which I have done, so that is NOT the problem.
Also, I would just like to add that when I go into the windows directory and attempt to run activesync (repllog.exe) I get the following message.
(cannot communicate with the pc because of the fllowing remote networking error (Error 608)
I have seen others ask help for this question without an answer on xda-dev also.
Thanks again! If anyone has the solution here I think a lot of people will be very happy!
:-(
turn off your firewall then pug ur device in and see if that works... works for me... perhaps your firewall started blocking it for some reason... other than that good luck
I had similar things happen to me in the past. While the phone is connected, check Windows Update whether there is a new version of Sync Center. This has fixed the problem for me.
i appreciate the suggestions.
However,
I have the firewall disabled and it still does not connect.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the WMDC using the latest software directly from the website. There appears to be no updates for the program once it is installed.
Any other suggestions?
Have you tried multiple USB cables, multiple USB ports, or even multiple computers? I've had USB cables which aren't capable of data transfer, as well as USB ports on the computer go bad. You might also considering a hard reset, to ensure no software on the phone could be causing the problem. If it's truly the USB port on the device that's broken, then you're in bad shape if you want to return it to AT&T for repair. You may be able to flash the AT&T stock ROM, but you won't be able to restore the AT&T stock SPL, which they check when fixing the device, so you may very well have to fork over some money to get it fixed. Best of luck
My phone is doing this also.
Multiple PC's, multiple USB ports, multiple cables. All of which worked perfectly beforehand...
The other thing to try is Internet Sharing - when I go in there and press 'connect', then it says Check USB cable connection, connect USB to any of my PC's/laptops and it doesn't register on the phone.
This phone is really a piece of ****. I could rant on for hours about the stupid problems there are with this handset, I'm sure I'm not alone. Perhaps I expected too much.
Anyway, if anyone has any info on how to make my USB connection work I'd love them forever...!

Could be a faulty device...my phone connects to every computer, every time. take the phone to your provider and show them whats happening.
Also, i've had issues with the standard mini USB ( http://www.meditronik.com.pl/doc/mini/usb-kabel-mini=foto=canon.jpg ) not properly connecting/loosing connection.
Try a HTC usb it might work better: http://bestcellbuy.com/bargainsea/Pictures/HTC/OEM_Home_Charger_USB_Cable/OEM_HTC_Data_Cable_07.jpg
I've tried the HTC USB lead that shipped with my phone to no avail.
I think the device is faulty (surprise surprise). It charges from USB perfectly fine, every time.
I'll post back once I find out what Telstra say... it's obviously still under warranty but that isn't really the issue - It is just such a major PITA having to switch to a loan phone and deleting confidential business data etc from my phone before sending away for repair etc etc...
Thanks for the help though, it is appreciated.
Well, I've got my USB going again. Not sure exactly what I've done, but basically I pulled the battery out for a few minutes and replaced it, turned on and off the 'high speed' checkbox in USB Connection Settings, and it has come good.
****box phone.
Somehow mine started working again last night too. Same cable, same port and everything.
Really odd, but I'm not complaining at the moment!
It seems this problem is spreading, as i'm being terrorized by this stupid bug... This afternoon I've tried to get internet on my laptop (by connecting my phone to it), but it was just charging my phone, so I thought the cable was broken. Next I tried it at home on my desktop computer, with another cable, and it did the same (several reboots have passed).
I don't know if someone already tried it, but when you enter the bootloader, it says "Serial". Normally when you connect the USB-cable it changes to "USB" (at least with my kaiser, universal and wizard). on my phone it didn't...... can anyone check this for me??
to enter bootloader: hold volume-down-button and pres soft-reset-button.
thanks in advance!

thanks for your help.
I've flashed my device with the newest official from HTC, and it still doesn't connect with the usb-data (i used the "flash-from-SD" -method).
The strange thing was that it happened suddenly... i never use a headset with cable, so its almost impossible the connector is broken. Any ideas people??
btw, the device isn't SPL flashed, so i can't use other roms beside the official roms...
Same thing happened to me. No USB sync, no USB connection at all; it only charges. Thankfully I had a chance to flash to a custom ROM before this happened.
The only way I can sync my data is to use a bluetooth USB in my PC. Works quite well with my contacts, calendar, & email, but I have yet to try to transfer any large files.
The bluetooth USB I went with was ASUS USB-BT21 USB 2.0 Mini Bluetooth Dongle. It is VERY low profile, too, but I would have liked for it to come with an end cap like those USB flash drives, otherwise I have yet to find any complaints about it. The price was great and so much cheaper than spending an additional $70-$100 to get my USB port on my device fixed.
Here's my saga: No Syncing, No USB Connection
Best of luck!
Debbie
this happened to me before...when you connect your devivce to your laptop/comp, are you guys not getting the little pop up that says activesync & disc drive...??? if so jus make sure at least one of those are checked...sometimes both of the circles will be blank, thus the comp will simply charge it...
unplug the device for approx 10 sec then plug it in again, and the box should pop up again...
also...if you are tethered to your comp using the tp2's internet, your comp will not recognize your tp2's storage...

I've never used the SD-Card method myself, but now will have to due to my USB port no longer working.
I've been syncing by using Bluetooth USB and just tried transferring files via Bluetooth and it worked like a charm! Smaller files were instantaneous and large files took longer (of course), but also worked fine.
I just tried copying over a RHODIMG.nbh file and that bugger worked (188MB)... Excellent!!!
I did buy a USB card reader to transfer files, just to be on the safe side, but I must say that this little Bluetooth USB that I picked up is working awesome.

[Q] connect desire z to ubuntu via usb

hey there,
i was searching the web and the forum though couldnt find any issues for connecting the desire z via usb to ubuntu (10.04 for me). however, it doesnt work with my DZ. i bought an addition micro-usb-connector (htc) and the phone does only charge and not ask, what kind of connection i want.
once, i read (and experienced) that you have to connect the usb to the back usb-ports (not the front ones) to get it working - that was with my desktop pc. now, using my laptop, the connection (mounting the sd, tethering or whatever) wont work on neither of the laptop's usb-ports...
so maybe there are two questions/issues:
does anyone have similar issues or maybe no problem with connecting the phone to
1) a laptop?
2) ubuntu 10.04?
thanks for your anwsers!
This might be nothing to do with it, but I found that I couldn't use adb with my phone when I was using a third-party USB cable, even though it sync'd (HTC Sync) fine. This was using XP. When I went back to the original HTC cable, adb worked fine.
Hi there,
I have a laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) and everything works fine here. If i connect my DZ with my laptop a menu appears on the DZ asking if i want to charge only, use as disk drive, HTC sync, USB tethering and internet passthrough. I havent tried HTC sync but the rest works fine. I can even synchronize my music with Rythmbox or Banshee. So what i'm saying is that it should work out of the box.
My DZ is stock European edition, no root or s-off yet.
I suggest you first look in the settings of your DZ and look for "Connect to PC". There you should see the settings for the default connection and a "ask me" option. (My default is charge only and "ask me" is turned on). If this doesn't work maybe you can test your device on another computer to see if the menu does appear when you connect your phone.
Thanks for your replies.

My DZ is also European, standard stock Rom,nothing done (yet). I checked the settings you mentioned and it says "ask me".
Next thing that is really weird: I can enable the tethering option (but cannot use it), yet the connection bypass (or what it is called in English) is greyed out. Tomorrow, I'm going to try the usb cable from the box...
ok, i checked with the original usb cable, still i wont get a connection. as my laptop sits on a docking station, i also tried the back-ports (at the docking station) and un-docked it - no success. none of the three ports will grant me access to the phone.
furthermore, i booted into windows xp and it will show a removable device, but i cannot access it (says something like "enter a device").
it seems to me, that it has something to do with my laptop (lenovo t61) and its usb ports... i have no idea, what to do, so i'm happy about any advice or experience...
Try the guide on adb at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685 , it tells you where to get the Windows drivers.
thanks for the hint, i tried to adb on linux (without success), but going for the windows try...
i'm wondering about, why the phone does not simply give access to the sd-card, like any other removable device. why do i need to install htc sync (including the drivers)? when plugging any removable dev for the first time, it normally just installs the drivers and you'll get access... where is the problem here?

I know what you mean, I would have thought it would "just work" if you connect the phone in "Disk Drive" mode, where the SD card is mounted on the PC.
You're not using a USB hub, right, you've tried connecting straight to your PC's USB ports ?
no, there is no usb-hub used. the connections i tried were always direct ones.
The next thing to do would be to try to connect your phone to another computer. Because it could also be a problem with your phone rather than your usb ports.

I only had a quick look, so a more extensive look may well turn up some useful info. The thread I stumbled across was at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=673501
Ok,i took a look at the link (thanks!), but that deals with ubuntu 7.04. To me, it doesn't seem to be the issue that usb ports are not working, as other usb sticks and my touch pro 2 were recognized without any problems.
Imho,it is like when I connect to the front ports of my desktop, when the connection doesn't work either, so I'll have to live with it. Thanks for your support anyway (I'm still open for new approaches)
BTW: it really bugs me that I can't just plug that device and use it as a mass storage like any other...
i have absolutely no idea why, but now it works... today, when i was charging the phone via usb (the thing, that was working from the beginning), my DZ rebooted spontaneously and afterwards it just showed the missed connection options...
no i just need to figure out how to use the internet-forwarding (dont know the correct translation - what i want is to use the internet from my pc on the phone) ... any clues?

IF so can you help me on fixing this situatioN? please!!? thanks a bunch guys

I know this problem to good -I guess a hardware fault. I had this with my first and now with the second TP2 too.
For my guess the USB connector-hole (or how you call it in english) is too big! If I place the TP2 in a dockings station everything is fine -sync no problem.
If I try it with only connection by cable -not a hope.
If you buy I docking station I guess the problem could be solved
I had this with my 1st Tilt 2, nothing I tried worked. I had to sync/move files via BT USB. It was inexpensive (made by ASUS) at $14 and very low profile. Believe it or not, it worked really well, even for huge RHODIMG files when I wanted to flash a new ROM. The bigger the file, the longer it took, but it *did* work.
Recently, I got a great deal on a used, mint condition, Tilt 2 with lots of accessories, including an Otterbox, for $150 shipped, and my USB syncing is working again. Definitely a better deal than the $90-$275 estimate HTC gave me to repair the USB.
Hope you get it sorted, but it's been a common problem with this phone. Seems the pins inside are really delicate.
EDIT: Hey I just noticed we all have a "thanks meters" now... Schweet!
Debbie
dang is there any other way i can fix thiss??
Just had my T-MO Vario V replaced for this very thing. As my replacement started acting up as well with the same error, I searched again on the web and found that it might also be a faulty usb cable or the fact that you connect your phone via a hub rather than directly to a mainboard port.
I use another cable now connected to a mainboard port and guess what (and keep your fingers crossed) for the moment it's working.
Good luck!
Robert
Im using a T-mobile (SIM Unlocked) TP2 from Singapore. Same thing here, when plugged to the PC via USB (the one that came with the phone) it charges but doesnt show the actual syncing with ActiveSync 4.5. I used to have an old Treo 750 that synced just fine (though TP2 definitely has a much much better PC connector than the Treo).
One thing I noticed is even though ActiveSync is not popping up for automatic syncing, It always show in the taskbar as connected. I can even navigate to my TP2 in Explorer & transfer files to & from my PC via USB. My question is, is there a way for ActiveSync window to really come up whenever I plug my TP2 in?

Yes it is in the device setting in active sync ...
I also tried every possible settings with Activesync options in the phone but it still doesn't show the actual ActiveSync window when I plug my TP2 via USB though it connects & via the taskbar icon & still explorable in windows explorer. I just want to have that peace of mind that I can fully back up using Activesync aside from using other 3rd party backup tools before I start playing with different ROMs out there.
first check the "usb to PC" settings in setting menu on the phone, try unchecking "enable faster data sync" see if this makes a difference .
if not then try going into your control panel on your computer, and use "add and remove programs" and remove active sync , then re-install it , also change the usb cable if you have another one laying around..something that will make a difference..
"enable faster data sync" uncheck this and it should works.
I had same problem...
Try entering bootloader mode and plug it in and see if windows detects the device if it does then try clicking on start on your PC, then right click on my computer, then click manage.
When computer management opens click on device manager then click the + to the left of usb devices.
click on each usb controller you find and press delete and uninstall each one until none are left. Then restart the pc and unplug the phone, soft reset the phone. Wait until windows restarts and AFTER it has finished installing ALL drivers for your usb controllers plug the phone back in and see if that fixes the problem.
I just thought as well, try plugging the usb lead into a different usb port, that way windows will treat the phone as a new device

[Q] Galaxy Nexus (i515) - Broken Screen - USB Debugging Disabled

Hello all!
Here's the situation: I dropped my phone yesterday (Samsung Galaxy Nexus - i515) and the screen is destroyed. I can still see the top left corner (maybe 1/4 of the screen), but the digitizer is also hosed and I have a pattern lock. I need to get the data off the phone. When I connect it to my computer, it shows up as an external drive, but there is no file structure. From what I've read... I apparently have to unlock my phone before I can see the files, which as I said before is not possible right now.
Bootloader is locked, not rooted and the best part... USB Debugging is disabled. I've read through tons of information, but most threads either fade away when they get almost to a solution, or they are never fully answered.
I got the Unified Android Toolkit (GNEX V12.1.1.) by SKIPSOFT (which is amazing btw), but since good ole' USB Debugging isn't enabled, I can't use adb commands. I've read you can install a custom recovery and use adb at that point, but my bootloader is locked and I don't want to wipe data to unlock it.
I can get into fastboot, the driver shows up in device manager, serial shows up under 'fastboot devices', etc. but it looks like the only thing I can really do at that point requires a data wipe. I hit recovery (which is stock), the screen goes blank for a few minutes and then boots as normal. I'm guessing I can't use adb with the stock recovery??
I believe my final option here is to use a USB otg cable and use a USB mouse (wired only here? can I use a USB dongle? can I even unlock a pattern lock with a mouse?) to navigate until I can get USB debugging enabled. Since I can see a bit of the screen, I don't think it should be too hard. Even if it does prove too difficult trying to do it blind, there appears to be plenty of small apps that give you the capability to view what's on your phone via your PC. I was initially trying to find something that I could control phone from PC (screencast appears to be the best I've found so far), but without USB Debugging enabled or root, it's a no go.
I would like to hear from some of the smart folks out there about my options. I used to mess around with custom ROMs and all that good stuff, but it's been a few years so I am a little rusty.
TL;DR
Phone: Samsung Galaxy Nexus (i515) - broken screen and digitizer
Bootloader - Locked
Root - No
USB Debugging - Disabled
Phone has pattern lock
What is the best option to get my data backed up/copied?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can share!

Unfortunately without ADB I do not know of any way to retrieve your data, or even clear the pattern lock. I think the easiest route would be to try a corded usb mouse and an otg adapter. You could try a cordless mouse with dongle, as long as it is not Bluetooth as that would most likely require a pairing code, but a standard 2.4GHz wireless mouse may work.

Thanks Hakugin.
I wanted to give an update. The USB OTG thing definitely works on the phone, but without being able to see the screen, unlocking the pattern would be extremely difficult. I tried for a little while, but there was just no way of knowing if I was even close.
I ended up getting a new phone via insurance. I took both phones apart and plugged the screen on the new phone into the old phone's motherboard. I was able to get into the phone, disable the pattern lock, enable USB debugging, and everything else I needed to do.
I know it's not the greatest and most available solution, but it definitely allowed me to get where I needed to be. I used MyPhoneExplorer (I think that's what it's called) to backup call logs, texts, etc and then restored to the new phone (once I had them both back together of course).
The USB Debugging is the biggest hurdle to overcome. If someone can find a good answer to solving that problem, we'd be ok. Of course, that would be a huge security issue...
