[Q] Which is better for T-Mobile: Verizon or AT&T? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking to buy a refurbished G3 and although I'm on a T-Mobile MVNO and prefer T-Mobile devices for their unlocked bootloaders, an ebay reseller I trust is offering the VS985 in as new condition for a price that is about $50 less than the best I can find for the D851.
The Verizon development scene seems pretty healthy and root/TWRP seem to be readily available. I will probably stay with KitKat and install either CloudyG3 1.2 or Skydragon KK.
Is there any reason to prefer an unlocked AT&T D850 over the Verizon VS985? I realize that with either device I will not have T-Mobile wifi calling or VoLTE but I rarely make calls so that is not a priority,. Are there other significant reasons to avoid the Verizon/AT&T G3 in preference to the T-Mobile D851 I'm overlooking?
Thanks
PS - Still interested in this intellectually but I ended up buying a D851 for a very good price off Swappa.

One reason might be the LTE bands supported by the VS985 variant. It may not support the necessary ones to get 4G LTE on T-Mobile's network.
How much did you end up getting the 851 for after all was said and done?

I have had both unlocked AT&T and Verizon phones in the New York City area and both of them got LTE everywhere it was available. I don't travel to remote areas (and if I did I probably wouldn't use TMO) so I don't miss the missing bands.
I paid $300 for a mint D851 on Swappa vs $275 for a mint VS985 from a reseller I trust on ebay. The average low price on the D851 seems to be about $325 or more on both Swappa and ebay, given that there are relatively few D851s for sale.
Now just this past week T-Mobile took the G3 off their website (they are still selling the G2 new at ~$350 or pre-owned at $230) so I would expect there to be a lot more D851s in good condition at better prices on ebay as TMO gets rid of their overstock once the G4 is available. Be interesting to see if it goes as low as $250 for a mint "refurb" in a few months.

Finally am going to HTC after years of Samsung :D

After years of having Samsung phones I could take no more. They are now awful. Locking down their phones and TW is so bad. I just ordered my new HTC M8 developer edition for AT&T. I can't wait. A bit pricey, but no-contract/unlocked phones are the way to go. After years of rooting my Samsung phones, I actually have no desire to root my new M8; however, its nice to know that my bootloader is unlocked if I decide to go that route.
So - anyone of you using the developer edition on AT&T in the states? How is it? Does it require the input of AT&T's APN for LTE. Is LTE reception good?
Would love to hear more from those who recently abandoned Samsung.

Hi I'm using the unlocked version (it has the same radios as the developer editions). I am on Cricket (AT&T's pre pay service) and LTE is fantastic. Works out of the box as advertised.
I am in the San Diego area...
Hope this helps.

Thanks. Cricket is GSM based now? So your using band 17 for LTE?
Yes the New Cricket is all GSM, and uses all the AT&T towers for LTE, 3G and under. It is like getting AT&T without a contract, and for a lot less. I got my nano simm online from their web site, you avoid a 25$ activation fee a store will charge.

Will the International Model work fine on AT&T?

I went in to Best Buy and pre-ordered the Note 4 on a 2 year contract. Since it'll most likely be locked down to hell, I'm considering selling it the second I buy it and ordering the international version to buying the TMO version.
Will I have any issues?
I bought the international model from GSM nation with confirmation from them that it would work on att. Nope. It does not have the 700 band and does not get LTE. Sucks. I will be getting the att model this week. My model is SM-N910U. No dice.
Thanks to everyone using different spectrum for LTE, the euro/international models almost never have functional LTE in the States. You should get 21mb HSPA+ which depending on your market may get to 2 to 7mb down on GSM 3G.
i believe this model SM-N910F works with at&t band 17.
Ah man. I guess I should just get the t-mobile version off contract :/
Just cancel your pre-order with BB. That is what I did and then I called TMO and ordered with them.

Yup, I feel you.
Luckily, T-Mobile is great in my area. Coverage is perfect. However, I travel to the middle of nowhere in PA often. Won't get reception there :/

You're much better off getting the T-Mobile version. It's cheaper @ $750, readily available, and fully compatible. It even automatically adds the at&t apn when you put in the at&t SIM card.
I just ordered the AT&T model after having the international unlocked models of the S1, S2, S3, Note 1 and Note 2. All of them were only able to get HSPA+ for data, but they all worked fine otherwise. For that reason I have the AT&T model coming to experience LTE for the first time.
If I had known the T-Mobile version works on AT&T I would have gotten that since I am a fan of rooting. No dice for AT&T model yet, but I have high hopes someone will crack it soon.
My straight talk signal runs off AT&T....so i can use lte off the t-mobile device with no problems at all??

Which version for US market?

Hey everyone, as always i like to buy my phones direct from the manufacture if possible. I do this to avoid all the trivial crap like locked bootloaders, bloat etc. Im looking to buy a G4 that is "clean" without the garbage but can also support LTE in USA. Which model should we shoot for? I bought my Galaxy S6 from Samsung (SM-G920i) which i love since its "clean". Im going to be using it on AT&T in the US btw. Thank you.

Good question - I'd like to know the answer, too.
Me three? Anybody know?
Did anyone figure this out? Or at least which supports tmobile/att 3g/4g bands? Like if there is no unlocked version does the tmobile version have all att bands?

Good question. I've read that with the G4 international versions, LTE won't work on US GSM carriers, even if the LTE band is available.
But I can't say I've seen a reasonable explanation why.
The one I got from PCMag in their contest was listed in the rules as LG G4 Global Version the model # is LG-H815.
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=7996&view=1&c=lg_g4_h815_lte-a_lg_p1 lists the frequencies and its a LOT.
For comparison here it is side by side with the T-mobile G3 my wife uses http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=6272&id2=7996&id3=8045&del_id=8045
I am using mine on T-Mobile with zero issue on 4g.
As for price and availability of this model, its anyone's guess. According to the rules on the contest I entered this phone was valued at $1000 and I had to give PCMag a W9 to claim my prize so they could report the device as income.
It came with very few pre-installed apps from LG.
If anyone has any questions, fire away!

Depending on the area of the US you live the H815 will give you LTE on quite a few bands in the AT&T market. In my area OC, CA band 17 is used for LTE quite a bit and I have a Korean version of the G3 which has no issues getting LTE. I have ordered the H815 which should work fine for me, here is a list of the LTE bands it supports
LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 17(700), 20(800), 28(700)

As stated from @alwayslearning my H815 from LG G4 TRIAL 4G LTE work on TMO. And no W9 requires xD and they claimed that it's cost $329 what a deal. Maybe that the Cost to LG USA MOBILE and retailed @ $1000.

Hmm...this seems like a good deal since it includes the leather back and has world wide LTE bands. I preordered the dual sim version here in the Philippines but may cancel now and pick this one up instead. More LTE bands and slightly less expensive then my preorder. One perk ordering from LG here is it includes 32gb sd card, second battery and stand alone charger but I can always buy those separately. Most important are the multiple LTE bands since I travel to states twice a year.

Which Model/Where to Buy Cheapest for AT&T?

So I want to buy this phone straight out. AT&T is charging more than other carriers, should I just buy the T-Mobile version? Do I have any other options for where to buy or which model to buy?
The T-Mobile version will be locked to T-Mobile, and AFAIK, unless you have a T-Mobile account, they won't unlock it for you.
Plus, it looks like the the T-Mobile phone lacks at least two LTE bands that AT&T runs (and vice versa).
I am in the same boat, and for now I see the choice as between buying the AT&T phone (leather) through BestBuy and collecting their $100 gift card for the final cost of $669-100=569, or buying the unlocked international version at ebay (currently $605) or amazon ($655), which has all the advantages of not being a carrier version, but also lacks one of AT&T's bands (30). Plus, there are risks associated with buying a $600+ phone from companies you don't know.
Quite a few people from here have ordered their phones from ebay, so I'm hoping they have a good experience, so I can jump on the bandwagon.

Good to know I'm not in this boat alone lol. How much do you know about the band its lacking and how that may affect signal?
I wanted T-Mobile for that brown leather.... But it makes sense that you'd need an account lol.
I just looked at specs for the two models:
AT&T Model H810, bands 2,4,5,7,17,30.
T-Mobile Model 811, bands 2,4,5,7,12
International Model H815, bands 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,17,20,28
So, the TMO model lacks AT&T's bands 17&30, and the International one only lacks 30. I really have no idea how wide-spread those bands are, and how much we would lose by not having them.

Appreciate you looking that up. That's some good info. I was gonna research when I got a chance later tonight lol. The small print on that tablet is that you have to put it on that 2 yr contract for $10/mo.
I don't need an LTE-enabled tablet bad enough to pay $240.99 for it. It might be a good tablet, but I doubt it's that good.
Plus, I am going to pay full price for the phone mostly to be free. Why would I tie myself to a contract for a tablet?
I'm in the same boat, sort of. I'd like to avoid a carrier version and was set on the International but now don't know how that one missing band will affect service.
Question though, if I have a carrier model and get it unlocked to use with another carrier, I'm guessing I'm still stuck with the previous carrier's bloat and start up screen, correct?

Well I can't be 100% sure on the info I'm reading.... But it looks like Band 30 is either a 3g band or a lower mhz LTE band. I can't find much, or I may not be using the right "key words".

Yep.
Unless you root and debloat it, but that very ability is more likely to come to non-carrier versions, which are not bloated in the first place.

Correct on that. At least till you root/ROM it!
I think I'll stay away from rooting and romming for a bit. I bricked my three month old LG G3 romming it and had to rebuy a new one last month. So when I get the G4, I'll have two G3's which look brand new but one is a paperweight.

Lol I understand. That's a pretty cool looking paperweight! But yea, international versions don't come with much bloat at all.
That's my main attraction to it. I'm picky about my phones and hate branding and bloat. Looks like the International model lacks bands with both my current carrier (AT&T) and the carrier I may be jumping to (Verizon).
Now I'm stuck between two rocks and a hard place. I can either chance it with the International, go for the AT&T model knowing I may be dropping them in a few months, or just wait it out until I switch carriers.

LTE band 30 is upcoming, and not yet deployed. Chances are good that unless you live in the downtown area of a major city you probably will be moved onto the next device by the time you need band 30. Also, band 17 is AT&T's primary LTE band, so you probably don't want to get a device for AT&T without band 17. Stick with the AT&T version or the international. You can probably find the brown leather backplate by itself without buying a T-Mobile G4 that's missing the most important LTE band.

If you happen to be in an area that gets band 30, you should have incredible speeds until more devices are released that support it. It's just part of the consideration. I figure my speeds are fast enough for now, and it could be a year or more before band 30 is even up in my home area. I'm on AT&T and have the international version. I'd rather have the guaranteed unlocked/rooted international version than pay a lot more for the AT&T variant which might be locked for months. Whatever you do, just don't get the T-Mobile. Other than that, you can't really go wrong.

Actually, if you are planning on going to Verizon, you don't really have a choice: You need to get the Verizon version.
Both AT&T and international G4's are GSM-only phones and will not work with Verizon.

which version will work best on att?

there seems to be three versions that are the most accessible in my price range, sprint, tmobile and unlocked variants. on paper, it seems like the unlocked variant actually has the least amount of att bands but i just wanted to know overall which variant would be the best for att service
