Custom ROM without root - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
Had my HTC One M8 for ages now and love it.. previously with all my Samsung devices I have gone down the Root and ROM route but I how use SkyGo and Barclays Bank app alot and these don't work with Root.
Is there a way of installing a Custom ROM without having Root? Basically I want to get rid of all the bloatware (Such as the HTC versions of Google apps) but still want to be able to use SkyGo and Barclays.
I heavily use Google apps, My current set up is stock ROM with Google Now launcher.

Guessing you cant?

hai, Try unlocking the bootloader with HTCDev, Then flash twrp via fastboot and flash a sense based rom and once you get the rom booted go to supersu - Settings then scroll down and click Full unroot and all should be good

That's a great suggestion. Never would have thought of that myself.
But OP, please make sure that you flash a stock based Sense ROM.
A Sense based ROM with mods included, such as ViperOne, will not give you much without root privileges.
I recommend MaximusHD.

In the end I have converted the phone to GPE

Yes, it is possible. You'll want to root your phone, downgrade to the engineering build, and then flash ChiefzReloaded's Stock+OTA rom.
yes it's possible. it's called stock rooted. just follow the root tutorial. you will be rooted. no need to flash the eng build as you're not trying to flash a custom rom.

Noob question: Other than CR's ROM having the OTA, what other difference is there between stock rooted and the ROM?
Does tethering, apps2sd (ext) and such work on rooted stock?

you guys do realize that chiefzreloaded stock+ota rom, however close to being stock, is not the oem rom. That rom has tweaks.
To get the oem rom follow the directions to root you will end up with the completely 100% oem ROM (if you follow the original root guide) that you can install some root apps (like wifi tether). NOW if you want to flash the eng rom to have the release keys and ease of going into clockwork, then you want to go back into clockwork and make a nandroid. This way after flashing the eng you can restore the nandroid and still have all the benefits of eng release but have your fully stock rom. Also with that nandroid you always have your stock rom as a backup you can go back to w/o loosing root.
i ran stock rooted for a while before flashing another rom. my first was eugene's slidemeroot5r1. the reason i switched was apps2sd-ext, starting getting the low on space warning (annoying). after fooling around w/ some other roms & making nandroids of each, i am now on the ota rom.
tethering, if i'm not mistaken, should work on stock rooted. it's been a while so i truly can't recall. but you will need to download the program. ..you will not have the option of apps2sd. however, with some of these scripts floating around (firerat & darktremor) it may be possible. don't quote me on that.

that was the ONLY thing i forgot to do. smh. it was on my list and everything. when i was in the process of flashing the eng build, i couldn't for the life of me figure out to get back to clockwork. i was stuck on the red triangle lol. didn't find out till after i flashed another rom that i had to do vol up + power. ..my biggest regret.

LOL the bubbles are easy to push back man just get them from com.htc.resources.apk from stock rom or older slidemeroot and then put them in the the htc.resources.apk from the CR Rom .. you could just push the entire stock apk but I dont know if something is "tweaked" in there
all you have to do is root it, downgrade to the Eng-release, and just jump into the recovery mode. after that reboot your phone and you should have the superuser icon
Umm no? Just follow eugenes root thread worked fine for me when I had stock

[Q] Root + Recovery question

Hello,
I always had a HTC, so I'm kind of a new with rooting and unlocking an LG.
I have a LG D855 international and I have been reading a lot in this forum and I think that I've figured it out. But I just wont to be sure.
So if I'm right than I can root my phone by running purpledrake. When I've done that I have to install SU.
But if I understand it correcly the only way to get twrp is with" Bump'ed TWRP" so it's only possible to have TWRP if I use a custom rom?
So it's not possible to have orig Rom an TWRP? Right?
But If I just root my phone with purpledrake, so without installing TWRP and without custom Rom, I would still be able to use EXPOSED? RIght?

Yes Purple Drake is currently the most reliable root method, once you have root you need to install the SuperSU app of your choice.
Don't confuse yourself with Bump! Just accept that this is the only recovery that works with the G3 and install it then use it like normal. You will only be able to flash custom kernels (and roms with custom kernels) after they have been bumped, this is something the developer will do for you not anything for you to be concerned with, and fairly soon (when this method is released) all custom roms and kernels you find on xda will be pre-bumped - so basically you can treat the recovery like you always have done.
Xposed is nothing to do with recovery and everything to do with having root access.
Does this recovery back up my stock rom safely? I'm hesitant to use it because I've never heard of bump.

Nope, afaik, once on bumped twrp, u can't restore stock recovery. For that you will again have to flash the stock KDZ.
OK so it's only for bumped roms. Thank you

The user above you is wrong and didnt read your question properly.
You CAN back up your stock ROM, just install bump, head to recovery and do a backup - you will never get stock recovery back though, unless you flash a KDZ with Flashtool.
But yes you can use TWRP to back up your currenty stock ROM.
Okay I get it the only way to restore the rom that I backed up is to add bump to it! ok I got it but in order to get back my stock phone I'm going to have to use the LG flash tool right

Rooting - Marshmallow best method?

There's a ton of conflicting info on the interwebs about "how to root" the htc one m8.
I've got an unlocked UK HTC One m8 running the most up to date MM at the moment.
I've just unlocked the bootloader (via HTCDev and ADB) and now I want to root it and then update to use Android Revolution HD rom.
What's the best method? I'm guessing I just flash TWRP and then Flash SU and then Flash the ROM?
Can someone confirm and confirm the correct files I should be using and where to get them... there's so many different places/info
Any help please? :good:
This belong in Q&A, I'll ask the mods to move it.
You don't need to root before flashing a custom ROM, unlocked bootloader and custom recovery is enough.
Flash current TWRP 3.0.2 using fastboot. Then put the ROM on the phone, and flash it.
Okay, that last bit is a bit over-simplified. Before flashing the ROM, you should do a few things: You should make a backup in TWRP of your stock ROM, so you can easily revert if anything goes wrong with the ROM flash (and just good to have a backup of the stock ROM). Backup any data you want to keep, with you method of choice (copy to PC, Titanium backup, cloud, etc.). Then do a default Wipe in TWRP, then flash the ROM.
After the ROM is installed, it will already have root. No need to do anything separate for root. If you were just trying to run the stock ROM, but with root; the proper process would be unlock bootloader, TWRP 3.0.2, and current stable SuperSU (2.78 at the moment).
Super, all done now thanks.
Although I think I'm going to look for a stock droid ROM I just don't get on with sense that much.
Any recommendations? Looking at GPE or CM13 I think.
Cheers

I prefer Sense, so no, I don't have any recommendations.
I'm also not big on ROM recommendations in general. This is a good case in point, as my preference is already different from yours (Sense vs. GPE,AOSP), so what good does my recommendation make? In the time you asked for a recommendation and waited for a response, you could have just flashed one, and tried it yourself for a few hours now. Which is a better path anyway, since only you can device whether you like the ROM or not.
Touché!
And thanks
I will probably do just that and flash this evening and test... I read somewhere about root on GPE being problematic and/or duo camera not working on CM13 guess I'll soon find out!

The ROM installer for the stock GPE ROM in the Development section, lets you pick root when you flash the ROM. It can't be any easier.
Other GPE based custom ROMs are all pre-rooted (as is typical for most all custom ROMs).
Even if stock unrooted GPE, the root process is the same as any other MM ROM for this device (which I already describe in a previous response): Flash current version TWRP 3.0.2 (which you should already have) and flash current stable SuperSU (2.78 at this time).
If you are reading root is problematic for GPE, its probably very outdated info.

Duo camera requires the Sense camera app, and there is no reason to think that Sense features would work on CM13 (which is somewhat obviously missing the Sense framework).
Not positive, but I believe it is possible to install the Sense camera on GPE, since GPE does include the required Sense framework.

Rooting 6.0 M8

Hey guys,
Newbie here, looking to root my M8 running on Android 6.0
I've been reading a bit and came across first unlocking bootloader, any of you guys know what to do afterwards on 6.0 since the guides I've read are on M8s running 4.4 and 5.0?
I want to flash RESURRECTION REMIX v5.8.2, any help pls?
Also, does anyone know if this ROM supports Substratum theme engine?
Thanks a lot in advance guys!
To be clear, there is a difference between just rooting (stock ROM), and process for flashing a custom ROM. Main reason for confusion, is that you do not need to root in order to flash a custom ROM (contrary to some other devices). You simply need an unlocked bootloader, and custom recovery TWRP.
Before you unlock the bootloader, backup any of your data (off-phone to computer, SD, etc.) you want to keep; as the phone will be wiped when you unlock the bootloader.
After unlocking the bootloader, just flash TWRP using fastboot. You should use current TWRP version, which is 3.1.0-0 which you can get here: https://dl.twrp.me/m8/
After that, just put the desired ROM on the phone, boot into TWRP, backup your current (stock) ROM (in case you want or need to revert) then do default wipe in TWRP (data, Dalvik, cache) and install the ROM.
I don't know if RR supports substratum. Just check or search the RR ROM thread.
Also, questions should be posted to the Q&A section, not General. So I'll ask the mods to move this thread.

To be clear, the kernel flashes with the ROM on this device, and that is true with s-on.
There are older HTC devices, where you had to flash the kernel separately by fastboot, or have s-off (in which case, kernel would flash with the ROM). But none of this ever applied to the M8.

Thanks for the clarification, that's probably why i got confused (watched some older video on rooting, kernel, c roms and so on). So which parts of software (or hardware) would you want to manipulate with or change that would require s-off?

Always be sure to research the root/mod methods for your specific device (not just another HTC phone, etc.). Every phone has its own peculiarities and nuances.

There is a number of modifications that require s-off, such as changing CID/MID, flashing modified hboots, manually flashing radios, flashing older version RUU ("downgrading") and a number of other things.
But for root, flashing ROMs, and most other common mods, just having an unlocked bootloader, custom recovery TWRP and s-on is enough.

Root and xposed is tow different things you need root for something and xposed for a different thing
for example you don't need root to have a working xposed framework ( some modules require root though )
So it's up to you and what you will use

In order for xposed to work, you need to flash the xposed framework using TWRP, period. It's not complicated, and it's stated in the instructions clearly.

What is the best way to stay up to date while keeping TWRP

Just got my S9 all set up just they way I like it. But part of the way I like it means knox has been tripped which means no more OTA updates for me. Is there a preferred method to keep my device up to date without having to go through flashing TWRP and all those other steps some of us like to do?
Only by flashing a new custom ROM from TWRP, if you are stock and want to keep stock you'll have to flash the updated stock with ODIN then flash TWRP again afterwards

First I installed TWRP to give me a really nice backup and restore solution
Then, I used TWRP to flash a custom rom and also Magisk
Then, I use Magisk to install YouTube Vanced (no-ads)
Magisk also provides a root-like access for me to install ad-away and remove any bloatware that I don't like
Finally, I sometimes experiment with different things through the time I have the phone
