[Q] Why does the ZF2 switch from LTE to 3G whenever I make a call? - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever I try to make a call using the default phone app on my ZF2, it always switches from an LTE connection, to H+/H, then settles on 3G, and also causes a delay in dialing. I'm currently using this on T-Mobile (USA), and I know T-Mobile supports VoLTE (HD Voice). Is this an issue of the ZF2 not supporting the band for VoLTE? (also is it possible to at least keep the call on H/H+ rather than 3G if the ZF2 doesn't support VoLTE)
I have the ZE551ML, 4GB RAM, 2.3 GhZ model.

Its is not your phone. It is your carrier(T-Mobile). I have had the same issue with T-Mobile but did not have with at&t on the same unlocked phone. Kinda weird when it happens but doesn't seem to effect anything.

Recommend using ZenUI app called ASUS support/ There are several helpful tips with basic troubleshooting techniques for your device including 3G/LTE signal issues.
For online support please see ASUS ZenFone Quick Service and FAQ:

As of now, phones must have software support for VoLTE, which only a few do. The ZF2 does not, that I know of.

Let me reply, I'm working with telecom for 5 year plus and have been dealing elements of 2G > 3G >4G.
your scenario is actually one of the test cases during UAT( user acceptance testing), these test case are scenario based so from here i could say is that.
Your carrier may or may not support LTE call OR the counterpart may not have LTE call in (phone OR network).
This works by,
4G to 4G > depending on network ( if both carrier has VOLTE)
a) if both carrier has VOLTE( voice over LTE), assuming both phone are LTE enable phone then you shall stay onto 4G network and call should be packet based transmission
b) if both carrier has VOLTE assuming either phone does not have LTE enable, then you shall drop from 4G to 3G in order to support the call function of the other party
c) if both carrier has VOLTE assuming that either phone does not have the feature of attaching to LTE during call, it will drop to 3G network because phone is not designed to perform 4G calls. ( look at Xiaomi Redmi, similar scenario but 2G and 3G, during call, 2G call slot pick up and 3G is dropped)
TLDR: either your phone does not support simultaneous 4G call or the carrier does not support VOLTE.
Oh... most European and US telco is slower then asia's network, so they might not have VOLTE or currently test stage. 3GPP stated that by 2017, 2G network shall crease and everything build base as 3G hence 4G network is a must.

and with that, our phone shall be non dual sim by 2017 onward which sucks.
it means that carrier will no longer allow BTS to attach 2G signal to BSC > MSS > circuit core.
so.... that slot is basically useless........ now.. lets wait for dual sim 3G/4G! perhaps zenfone 2^2

HTC ONE e9+ (4G Problem)

I recently purchased HTC One e9+ from UAE, and I live in KSA.
I'm a subscriber at Mobily (Etisalat in KSA)
The provider supports 2G / 3G / Lte TDD / Lte FDD
The mobile supports all the operating bands.
Few months ago all bands were allowed, hence I used to camp on 4G (TDD or FDD) freely.
Nowadays, the operator decided to reserve the 4G TDD network to fixed devices. to do so, they decided to block the IMEIs of the mobile phones which support both bands and allow only 4G FDD to be used by mobile phones.
- After that, I noticed that I rarely camp on 4G FDD, even though, all my friends with other mobiles can see 4G FDD normally.
- Moreover, I noticed that all e9+ and M9+ are suffering the same issue with Mobily and other mobiles like Samsung and iPhone are normally functional.
- After some traces and investigations, I discovered that the HTC Mediatek based devices prefer the TDD band and start registering as soon as it is available, once rejected because of blocked IMEI, the dumb device just marks all LTE technology as forbidden and never tries to register to the alternative FDD band, keeping only 3G forever.
- Snapdragon base devices tries access to any available LTE band, one by one, hence, it normally operates under the same conditions, like (M9, Samsung, iPhone…)
- If I am at a location with 4G FDD coverage ONLY (No 4G TDD tower) i have to toggle airplane mode to allow re-selection to start from scratch and be able to use 4G FDD, and if at any moment the dumb piece of metal tries to HO to 4G TDD, it gets rejection due to its IMEI and not just go back to 4G FDD, it forbids all the 4G tech and stays till the next restart on 3G.
The worst part is contacting HTC customer support, who provided no care AT ALL and just told me "We will consider this issue in future releases"
I know that they have some hidden codes which allow users to disable certain LTE bands and even change the band priority, but they preferred not to support and have no headache to support their suffering customers.
HTC is the WORST OF THE WORST EVER
in a trial to solve my own problem I am trying to reach EPST menu on my HTC in order to disable Band 41 and Band 38 or at least set up a search priority.
however, I opened my dialer and typed ##3282# then the EPST popped up, for some reason i decided to try it again, but the menu has just gone with no return, the code is not working anymore.
can someone help me on that...

How can i switch to LTE/UTMS/GSM Mode with an unlocked US Cellular (US991) LG G4?

Hello people! I just got an Unlocked LG G4 (Factory GSM Unlocked) to use with any GSM/CDMA carrier.
I'm actually using a GSM network with this phones which uses 850/1900 UTMS bands for HSPA+ and Band 4 (1700/2100 AWS) for 4G LTE. I'm currently on a data plan so i need the LTE service and GSM as well. I'm facin issues to use both simultaneously with this phone because in Mobile networks settings i can choose between:
*LTE/CDMA
*UTMS/GSM
*GSM
When i select LTE/CDMA i can get DATA at LTE Speeds but i'm not able to make/receive phone calls, neither text messages or anything related to GSM/UTMS service. When i switch to GSM/UTMS i can make phone calls, text messages, also receive both of them and also use data but i get HSPA+ only. (3G).
What can i do to use both GSM/UTMS/LTE and the same time? Thanks for your help and your time people.
Anyone?

maybe try to set it on global?
Unfortunately I don't think there is anything you can do. I had a similar issue (trying to use a Verizon G4 on T-Mobile) nothing I did would allow calls, texts, and, LTE at the same time. In the end my solution was to trade my Verizon model for a T-mobile one. Maybe I was lucky, but finding someone willing to trade only took 3 days after putting an ad on Craigslist.
Edit: the Verizon model did have "Global" mode, but produced the same symptoms as you described. When LTE would show (happened very randomly on Global) I was unable to make/receive calls or texts. When calls and texts worked all I would see was HSPA or HSPA+.

VS986 to use band 5 LTE abroad.

I meant to use band 5 lte in indonesia with smartfren using vs986. I used shortcut master lite app to enable band 5 (and/or disable irrelevant lte bands). However i still cant connect to it. I am certain that my location is under that lte band 5 coverage given that when i used other gsm sim i could see the network and attempt a registration on the network. Furthermore, seeing the networks rat id also match with the information online that it is indeed a band 5 lte network. However when i pop in the band 5 lte network gsm sim card, i am no longer able to scan for networks, it just fails to scan everytime, thus i cant connect. I wonder if there is a workaround to make vs986 able to connect to other lte networks other than verizon.
P.s. im on slim 13b rooted/xposed.
It's not just the bands. Verizon really borked the firmware of the phone to make sure that it doesn't work on any other 4G LTE network than its own. For instance, it doesn't work on AT&T and T-Mobile LTE network in the US either, even though the bands are supported.
What you can try is to switch the phone to "LTE/CDMA" mode in the "Network mode" settings. This will probably kill your phone connection, but if you get 4G LTE then, then you can try the same hack that worked for T-Mobile: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g4/general/guide-fix-vs986-dropping-to-3g-h-4g-lte-t3272434
But on some networks, there is no hope, for instance nobody was able to get it to work on AT&T.
I think i did check that thread out when i used t-mobile for about 6 months in seattle/udistrict/uvillage/uw areas, with no success. I never got the LTE connection. I wonder maybe its related to different roms/kdz/flashfire modified version of 13b that cause it. I hope someone whos lucky enough to get lte might share info about their 13b version/softwares that you debloat using debloater or froze using tibu. Thanks.
P.s. it was on 4g for an instant before it gives me no signal/network.
Why would VZW disable B5 if they have B5 sites?
That would really be stupid.
Posted using a calculator and delayed by AT&T.
LTE 2/4/5/13 can be activated using Shortcut master lite. The problem is that, when i used a simcard that utilized LTE band 3/8, i could detect/attempt registration to signal from LTE band 5 from local network through GSM (given that i activated it). However when I used simcard for that LTE band 5 network, somehow, i can no longer use gsm/cant search for network/crashed. It seemed that LTE antennae on this device is programmed to only accept verizon's. (For lte networks, apns are saved when i put MCC/MNC or RAT for verizons, but discarded when i put other). Thank god though i could still use umts/3g.
Edit: So i tried again. Turns out, i could to get registered on the network, checked on network type and strength (says 4g - 3/4 bars) also on lte discovery says connected. However signal bars says unable to connect to network. Verizon definitely prevent users to use lte on another network. What a **** company.
this is from Verizon website them self
Network
CDMA, GSM, LTE*
Frequencies
1.9 GHz CDMA PCS, 800 MHz CDMA, GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, LTE 2/4/5/13, LTE 3/7 for Roaming*
which show it support band 3 in case of romaing only..but if you are in USA will not work sure as it is not romaing.

Issue connecting to 4G

So a mate has a P2 and can't seem to get it to connect to 4G. The SIM card and network is Vodafone UK.
What I know/have tried:
- SIM in both sim slots will connect to 3.5G (HSDPA) on Vodafone network
- A different SIM (Three UK) did connect to 4G in the SIM slot 1 (did not try SIM slot 2)
- Settings says 4G preferred network is selected
- By typing *#*#4636#*#* into dialer and going to phone info displays LTE is selected as one of the preferred networks
- The same SIM (Vodafone UK one) connects to 4G in his old phone and has done in all his old phones
- APN settings are correct, verified by Vodafone support plus myself looking online
So he talked to Vodafone support again today who said try speed tests in 3 different locations and report back. He has done 1 which is 14mbps down and 3mbps up which is slow for 4G (I get 64mbps down and 24mbps up, different network but shows his is slow and likely not 4G). Similarly we we know the device can connect to 4G from using the Three UK SIM.
My gut instinct is it's a network issue, all device settings seem okay, nothing is screaming out of place. The issue though is that the SIM has connected to 4G in his other devices so confuses me.
So, I'd love your thoughts and inputs on this. Any suggestions welcome that may help! Thanks!

I dont know the device or network specifically But I know that the device has to support the same lte bands that the carrier broadcasts in LTE in that area Just because the carrier broadcasts say 900mhtz in LTE, if the device dont support 900 in lte then it wont get it. I have had cases wher 3g is the same freq as 4g it still wont pick it up If you get what I am saying. May be a issue or not.
to further add he might take one of the old devices and use a signal catching app to see what lte bands are broadcasted in his area then compare to device
Thanks @TheMadScientist, all suggestions welcome still. I'm gunna continue to keep an eye on this, research answers and send him a link to this so he can test anything on the device.

We get this issue a lot using sprint phones unlocked international gsm. A lot of carriers seem to not use the same lte bands.
Then naturly verizon devices come gsm unlocked but verizons radios are crap and do not pick anything up half the time. My veriz g5 can get lte next town over cause they use a supported band and no towers near me use it. So i get 3g. And a lot of h h+ i ise lte discovery as the app on mine.
Just hope this isnt his issue as its a harware compatibility .

So I checked the network and the device (on GSM arena) and it seems 4G bands are supported. But I'll try that lte discovery app with him soon you mentioned and see what results that yields
@matt4321

You should check the manuals if there is support for 2600 frequency on phone.
Maybe the phone supports 800/1800(cos 3 is on 1800) and you don't have 800 band in area.
You will have to contact Lenovo and ask them to change baseband or whatever...
or Perhaps get a new phone with support for 2600
Had the same problem using a LG G3. I tried this App to trigger LTE only. Then the Phone connect to the LTE network.

Not sure what's going on with your Wi-Fi dropping connections but losing mobile data on/during a call is normal with 1 modem (such as our devices) with mobile data (not talking about Wi-Fi data). My old Note 2 was the last device I had with separate modems for calls and data (so they both worked at the same time, calls with mobile data). Nowadays they save money and only provide modem on most modern devices (it sucks I agree). Unless youre using VoIP with WiFi you will always lose mobile data (not talking about Wi-Fi, calls should not interrupt Wi-Fi connections so thats a mystery).
One note, be careful with flashing T-Mobile firmwares to other device flavors, this may cause issues with your device as I believe they use specific certs for the (TMob only). I dont have TMobile so I could be wrong, but I am petty sure the TMob firmware is different than all other flavors.
That is normal. Unfortunately VoLTE is very arbitrary and will not work even on unlocked phones from other carriers. Those phones are setup so that VoLTE works just on their network. You lose data because your phone has to fall back to 3G and UMTS to make or receive a phone call. Also, the G710VM from Verizon lacks LTE band 12 even though the hardware supports it. T-Mobile uses LTE bands 2, 4, and 12. Your best bet is to flash the G710ULM USA Unlocked firmware KDZ via patched LGUP using "Partition DL" mode then "Refurbish" mode once again. That will give you VoLTE calling support AND LTE band 12 support. LG's USA unlocked phones luckily always have VoLTE support on USA carriers.
