My bootloader is still locked and I've never had root on this phone got it too late to unlock. I'd like to root and if I can get a custom recovery and flash a rom. Can anyone help?

Right now, there is no way to root or unlock the bootloader in your situation. It sucks, but it's where we are.
Don't hold your breath for an exploit, either. Motorola/Verizon closed all known holes for BL-unlocking in the penultimate Jellybean OTA, and the only root method that worked in the last JB no longer works here.
Enough with the KK unlock and root threads.
I'm going to start reporting people that make these threads without doing some homework first.

If there is an exploit available, trust me, you'll know about it.

We can say this in every thread where they ask about root. We put warnings out prior to the OTA. Heck, we could probably put a sticky thread in this section about there being no root on KK, yet people will still ask. Why? Because they refuse to take 5 minutes to read through the other 37 KK related threads.

I of course can't speak for anyone else, but I knew the risks well before taking the update, and updated anyway.
I knew it was the very un-XDA thing to do, but frustration with the short battery life and UI lag on my phone was nearing a breaking point.
I tried to make the most of it; hence the "list of changes" thread, which hopefully has scared away locked users who are still n JB.
Any luck with a rootkeeper/root survival of any kind?

My story is somewhat different. I tried to find a way to get rooted KK on my phone (trying to play junior hacker again), ended up soft-bricking my phone to where the only way to fix it was to flash stock KK using RSDLite (did try RSD'ing JB first, but my bootloader was having none of that).
So now I'm hopelessly stuck with a completely stock phone without root.
I feel like the only way to get past this is to attack it politically, like if every single Verizon XDA user banded together and flooded Verizon corporate inboxes with legitimate reasons why we need unlocked bootloaders.
Or maybe if someone is good friends with a politician who is more left of center and concerned about consumer rights over corporations. Maybe convince them that it's better for the environment because potentially millions of phones could be saved from going into landfills if we mandate companies must allow bootloader to be unlocked when certain conditions are fulfilled, like if a phone reaches 1-year of age.

I new I was losing root with it as well. I liked the features that KK brought with the update and still did it. The update finally got me using Smart Actions and I'm getting pretty decent battery life, nothing mind blowing, but pretty good. Buying a portable battery pack has pretty much solved the problem I had with nonroot. Now I can go about 2 days as long as I carry it around, lol. Luckily it's small.

Flash a custom recovery via fastboot, and then flash SuperSU zip in recovery.

I attempted it myself and got errors just like some other people. Only difference is they still had root and I don't. I suggest following the thread and seeing if it does someday work for us or somebody could attempt it themselves. I'm currently on windows 8.1 so that could be a problem.

^^^He doesn't need an exploit since he has an unlocked BL. Also, this has been checked on the M and HD family of devices, it WILL NOT work because the the current KK updates have already patched the hole that this exploit is meant to take advantage of.

And what about aka test points? Many Motorola models had such special test points using which you could get unlock of BL. How about our XT907? Any ideas about test points or shortcircuit of contacts?

Towel Root only allows the root access that Motopocalypse needs. The old trust zone was accidentally (or purposely) put back into this OTA, that's what Motopocalyse exploits.

Im sure im just getting overly excited and so i wanted a second opinion, but did CF-Auto Root release a root for the verizon models (SM-N910V) i went to the website and scrolled through model list and found one listed , i dont want to brick my phone or anything so could anyone tell me if this is correct, will this work with odin and root the verizon model note 4??
i appologize if this has already been posted or something, i could not find it so i thought i would ask? Thanks for any replies.

Next time check this thread first. This has been discussed in the last couple of pages and probably more. If the file isn't signed by Samsung it will not flash. It shouldn't brick it, it will just fail to flash. Been there and done that... I probably tried all the root methods available for kitkat 4.4.4 and none work for the retail version.

Root for Lollipop is MUCH more difficult, basically you need to find a way to get a custom kernel (and thus unlocked bootloader) just to get root in L. I wouldn't get my hopes up, at this point as a Verizon Note 4 owner I've given up all hope and just enjoy my phone, its still awesome.
People just repeat nonsense non stop, saying rooting lollipop is much more difficult without a LP image for the device is nothing but nonsensical. All rooting any device/os is the ability to find an exploit on the device. It has much less to do with what android. THE ONLY THING IT HAS TO DO WITH: Is finding an exploit in a stock system to hijack system permissions so u can then make changes to give you admin (ROOT) permission all the time. With an unlocked BL your are able to load your own software pre OS so you are not dependant on finding an exploit in order to get root in OS your options are much greater. And that's it, anything else is pure speculation, so us not having LP on our device you can not claim it will be easier or harder, an exploit is an exploit that's in. So keep the absurd comments coming. Don't bother replying to me because no reason for me to come back here to find more nonsense.

I just managed to get this device from someone the other day. Having been an iphone 5c user for a while, going to a 5c after my last frustrating and horrible android experience with an HTC inspire device, I am back on android for the storage expansion so that I can play emulator games- only to find myself pulling my hair out ONCE AGAIN after all the numerous conflicting advice/ threads/tutorials out here which I have countless wasted hours on already. I don't have time to read through tutorials promising a downgrade from lollipop to kit kat, in hopes of a root so I can pair my ps3 controller wirelessly to my device... constantly stuck on odin failing and what have you, so just give it to me dry and clean. Please help as this is extremely frustrating and annoying.
Can I or can I not root this device? if so How? ( please provide detailed instructions as i don't know what the lingo is around here) If not i'm putting this thing right back on craigslist where I got it from. I am running 5.0.1

Have not read enough, if you have a Verizon locked bootloader... Recommend to put it right away to Craigslist because no root has been found good luck
If you can deal with root on a temp basis, meaning it is lost every reboot, then go that route. Otherwise as EdrickMg stated, it is not available.
How do I know whether the bootloader is locked or not? I might want to buy an N910V, as its much cheaper than international/Indian version, but I need to make sure whether or not the bootloader is unlocked. Cause I can't even think about not rooting a phone in first one hour of purchase. What could I ask the seller to confirm about the bootloader?
If it's a Verizon Note 4, then the bootloader is locked. There is no permanent rooting method for this phone. People are still hopeful that there might be one coming, but I'm willing to bet that there'll never be a method to root it. This phone has been out since October of 2014, with no root method found. There is a temporary root method that will allow you to root your phone, but the next time you reboot, it's gone and your phone is re-locked. To me, that's a lot of effort for something that you lose whenever you reboot your phone, but that's just my opinion. Also, this temporary root is just root - it doesn't unlock your bootloader.
If you absolutely must have a rootable phone with unlocked bootloader, then look elsewhere.
The only thing that we do have is debloater, which is a method that allows us to turn off and block almost anything we want. For me, that's enough, because the only reason I'd want root is to uninstall all of the crap that comes with this phone. It doesn't get rid of the junk, it just turns it off and keeps it from running.
If you want root to be able to install an ad blocker or to install custom kernels and/or ROMs, you cannot do it on this phone and likely (in my opinion), never will be able to.
Okay, I don't understand all these contract things as we don't have them in our country, but Verizon Note 4 and N910V, they are different? If not, how come there is a custom ROM and kernel for the SM-N910V model? The phone does show a red screen where Verizon is written on it. I am not understanding this!

There is a Verizon Note 4 Developers Edition that comes with an unlocked bootloader and it is rootable. I had to buy it straight from Samsung at full retail price. Totally worth it in my opinion. It is no longer available for sale on the Samsung site though

So what if u have a bootloader that starts with 15? I got 90% on kingoroot running a crap ton of random apps in the backgroundI thought I had it but bam root failed keep in mind I'm on marshmallow to anyone else get 90% are we really close or is it just a trick lol

So your bootloader is unlocked already, correct? You need to have an unlocked bootloader and be running Lollipop, here's the thread that shows you how/what to do...

Thanks bud I'll try it tonight! I gone like 6 pages into Google trying to find something that works I got a little confused on the baseband version part. This is a silly question but if I have mine on
N910VVRU2CPF3 and use Odin and flash version: N910VVRU1ANJ5 it won't brick my device? And no my bootloader is not unlocked yet

You'll want to flash the N910VVRU2BPA1_N910VVZW2BPA1_N910VVRU2BPA1_HOME.tar .md5 file in ODIN as that is the firmware that Lollipop expects/works on. I don't know what android version N910VVRU1ANJ5 firmware is for. Flashing N910VVRU1ANJ5 shouldn't brick your phone but you will need to have it on N910VVRU2BPA1 to install Lollipop and root.
Trust me, just follow the instructions in the post I previously linked. It's all laid out for you in what is pretty much the easiest way you can do it. As long as you do it in the order listed, with the files provided, it will work.

Rooting this phone is pretty tricky and you may have to repeat the process a few times for it to work. Follow the guide custom_roms_epeptic posted, that's the one I used and even though it took me a couple hours to go from stock to Nseven, it did indeed work. I would recommend using the version of kingoroot found in the zip contained in that guide, I tried kingroot and the newest version of kingoroot and both got hung up at 90% or just didn't work at all.

Part of the steps you will be doing will be to unlock the bootloader, this is mandatory. If your CID starts with 15, you can change the CID of your device to that of a dev edition device, which can then have its bootloader unlocked. Like I said before, it's all laid out for you in the other thread.

I have been looking everywhere. Tried kingoroot but still no go.
I am starting to get frustrated
I'm giving one more week then exchanging it. I too am surprised there's no root method out yet. I bricked and exchanged a device already. No success trying to recover the device either using the Spanish screenshot disaster explanation which doesn't work.

strange since kingroot worked for me but bricked my device i would suggest being patient and wait for one to come out since Kingroot and lieky other one click root ways are off the table for rooting the K10

I would say LG Stylo is closest but the camera isn't as good. Lens and size is nice but hardware processing is crap, but seems like every store has been on back order for them and with Stylo 2 out it's probably going to be shelved soon. I have faith in King root for solid success with k10 soon though.

We cant even use link2sd. This phone has 16gb rom but can let us use only 10gb. Smh.
No 3d games for us. And were not even allowed to mount the sd card as internal storage. Only portable.
Maybe the Galaxy J. I loved the Stylo but the GPS didn't work if the phone got hot.

I'm running out of patience also. I've posted requests on android forums twice asking why there is no support for this phone and still haven't gotten a reply. It makes no sense whatsoever, when I got my old L70 there was a big support forum for it and the LgK10 is a much better phone so why no support? Pissing me off.
At least I would like a reason from Android Forums for why they have ignored the K10.

I'd buy the L70 again. It was an awesome little phone. Totally agree re: lack of communication. It looks like we had someone post up a failed root attempt about two weeks ago, along with another dev mentioning he'd start on it with no response since.
Devs, we just want to know if there's someone out there actively working on the K10. I can absolutely respect the time it takes to get it done right, but we can't tell if we're waiting on someone or no one.
I'm about ready to jump ship for the J7 or an original G Stylo (if I can get my hands on one). The bloat and stock setup on the K10 are maddening.

The first time I tried it I got root, and phone made no restarts.
The second time I tried to get root back it eventually failed all the way to the research screen but the device did reboot several times during the kingroot root.
The latest time I rooted it the same as the first, no reboot.
I believe part of the problem is keeping kingroot as the superuser app, I think if I replace it with super su it may keep root.
I've seen several people say supersu ends up brick phone

Ive read the thread. Im not sure i follow tho.
Were suppose to install twrp first before we gain root access?
So that method is a flashable method then?

I am but it looks like we may be screwed without any sort of help from the forums folks. It just doesn't make sense that they would bypass giving this phone any consideration for support.
Count me as someone else looking to root this phone

what software version do you have?
I rooted before, then it bricked the phone. I sent it to warranty, after the sent it back, i cant root anymore

I am possibly interested in rooting my device. I have been rooting/rom'ing since back on my HTC Hero forever ago. Made a brief trip to iOS, and got into jailbreaking, but always missed the Android atmosphere. I am having issues with the battery on my device, and have debated factory resetting the device, and came across the forums about rooting.
I would just run a stock rom, with root, to be able to use Gravity box and Xposed. I am not super familiar with terminal/command line, so that part worries me a bit.
Anyone that is rooted, how does your device's battery last? Any major issues you notice? I use my camera for pictures of my family everyday, and don't want to risk anything that could compromise this feature.

Rooting doesn't hinder or damage or affect your battery directly
If you have enough reasons to root just root

I've had lots of Android phones and tablets over the years, and every one was rooted at some point. Imo, rooting is not as critical as it used to be. Back in the early days of Android, rooting was the only way to get certain features that were later incorporated into Android. As Android matured, rooting became less important unless you needed a specific function or app. Rooting is still required for stuff like Titanium Backup, AdAway, Viper4Android, etc, because those need access to system-level files, which is impossible without root permissions.
Ask yourself what do you plan to do with root access? If you have a specific need for root, then go for it. Obviously you are not new to the game, and the procedure for rooting Pixel 2 is brain-dead simple compared to what you did for HTC Hero. However, if you don't have a specific need or plan, then it is not worth messing with imo. The Pixel 2 is an absolute beast out of the box. Root tweaks won't get you significantly better performance. I am rooted and use Sysconfig patcher (a Magisk module) to allow doze for Google Play Services for a very small gain in battery life. But I wouldn't root just for that. Monthly updates are a little more hassle if you are rooted, but if you get that far then you should be able to flash updates too.

I too am a stock rom + root user. My battery life is outstanding for my usage patterns, usually 8-12 hours of SOT. As far as rooting, only you can answer that. Personally, I love it!! I like using dark themes, AdAway, TiBu, and the ability to use custom kernel tweaks. Having said all that, I haven't noticed any decrease in performance with day to day usage that you would likely use. So, if you ask me....root that sucker! ????

Seeing your input on this, Badger, makes me want to do it. Granted, not having rooted in over four years or so, I feel like I am missing a wealth of knowledge on this subject. I may give it a shot later today and see what happens. The only thing that worries me is installing the updates that come out each month. Do you do those monthly?

Oh I absolutely do the monthly updates using fastboot to install the factory images. It's actually very easy once you get the hang of it. You can look over my personal guide if you'd like so you have an idea of what to do :good:

Do you really need to remove the lock screen password? I flashed the OTA (using this method: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/how-to/how-to-applying-monthly-security-t3750234), and I had no issue entering the PIN from within TWRP (twrp-3.2.1-2).
And don't forget that rooting is a XDA rush!

Just my personal preference really. I just don't take chances with twrp if I don't have to :good:

I never rooted my Hero but did completely unlock my HTC 4G LTE(S-off???). Dear lord was that a nightmare. I think back then it actually required a tool(Dirty Racoon???), only certain ROM's would boot on certain bootloaders, etc. I don't miss those days lol.

I did root the HTC Hermes (win5) which was a trip!

While the 2 XL is a great phone even without root, I think there is just too much fun, experimenting, and customization to miss if not rooted. But this is a personal choice and you have to decide if you really want a specific battery icon, or any other custom feature.
You been given links to some steps and guides which are very good references. Since you said it's been four years since you rooted, I'm throwing in my guide as well
I am not a technical kinda guy, and sometimes the little details are what trip me up, so I crafted this initially for myself needing to be reminded of each step.
It is very detailed, step by step with tips and links and everything needed in one place. It certainly isn't the final authority for sure, but I've used it dozen and dozens of times with no issues. You can always default to the guide or other references if something isn't clear.
Take the plunge, I think you'll be very glad you did. In my opinion, root makes a great device an excellent device

Hey badger, thanks for these steps. Debating on trying this tomorrow. Do you have the actual rooting directions as well for a Mac? Tried looking in YouTube but could only find windows.

First you'll need to enable developer options by tapping on the build number 7 times in settings/system/about phone. Then enable OEM unlocking and USB debugging. You'll need adb/sdk installed on your Mac, then you'll need to unlock your bootloader with the follow fastboot commands..
fastboot flashing unlock....
And
fastboot flashing unlock_critical...
You have to have magisk 16.3 and the twrp installer zip in your internal storage.
Then you'll need to fastboot the twrp.img with the Mac specific prefix command (which I don't know), but the command is...fastboot boot twrpxxxx.img
That'll boot you into twrp, then hit install, and navigate to where your twrp installer and magisk zips are. Flash twrp, followed by magisk, reboot, and you should be rooted.

Awesome. Thank you. I was messing with adb a bit today, enabling immersive mode and what not. I think that I can follow these steps.
