[Q] G3 D858 dual SIM root - unlocking other LTE/4G bands? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I've posted in the AUS thread over in the main board, but it doesn't seem to be getting much attention:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/lg-g3-australia-thread-au-t2841345/page45
It's been reported and tested among several android devices that phones using the QUALCOMM chipset can now have various 4G/LTE bands UNLOCKED following a relatively easy - but fairly tedious process. as the G3 (and specifically, the dual SIM D858) sports the MSM8975AC Snapdragon 801 chipset...I ask the question:
Has anyone successfully unlocked 1 or more LTE/4G bands? I'd buy this phone if it were possible for root, then a successful unlock of all popular 4G bands here in Australia, specifically B28 (FDD) 700Mhz. Anyone who has tried, failed, succeeded or can provide additional details, please respond!
Thanks

Anyone?

Might be worth closing this, as G3 owners apparently don't visit here anymore.

I got my D858HK in the US and am here until August. I'll be primarily using in India and China. I tried one of the procedures using QPST and QXDM to write all the 4G/LTE bands to memory, thereby "unlocking" them. Didn't seem to work on AT&T's (US) network. I'm only getting 3G. It's possible I didn't do something correctly, however...
I also tried going into the hidden menu, but while I am able to select/deselect the check marks for the different bands, there is no way to save the selections. At least no way that I can find. I would expect that I should be able to get 4G (even if not LTE) if the unlocking was successful.
Not that this helps you much, but I am also interested in a way, if possible. I'll probably give it another shot later this week or next week. I'll come back and post if I have any success.

I bought the G4 dual SIM...I've posted in busier threads there in the general forum where others will actually respond. Hopefully we can get this soon...just need an unlocked bootloader on G4...

Sounds like you tried this thread. Thank goodness someone did, because I couldn't even download QPST, but I'm trying to get on T-mobile. Like you, I entered the secret menu with 3845#*858# What I find odd is that the LTE band selection indicates 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,17,20,40 But frequencycheck.com shows that these phones actually do 1,3,7,38,39,40,41. Those latter bands are crucial for China, so even if this setting were to work, it may well break China support.

successful in unlocking WCDMA/LTE bands in LG G3 D858HK
i was able to unlock the additional WCDMA and LTE bands in my LG G3 D858HK varient using QPST and QXDM.
The unlocking of WCDMA bands was done using QPST and the unlocking of LTE bands was done using QXDM.
Another important thing to note is that i was using MOKEE ROM 7.1.2 while doing the band unlocking.
NV MANAGER couldn't read from phone when i tried with the stock rom.

Unlocked US HTC 10 won't connect to 3G Band 900

Hi everyone. I recently purchased a HTC 10 from swappa, the unlocked version. The thing is, on gsmarena and HTC US page says that this model works on 850/900Mhz bands for UMTS (H/H+), but here in DR, i'm trying to use it with Orange Dominicana, who works on 900Mhz band for UMTS and the phone doesnt... It goes from LTE to 2G, and when on LTE i cant receive phone calls. I need to put it on 2G to receive calls, but the data sucks at those speeds.
Anyone knows a way that i can be sure if the phone really doesn't have this particular band (900Mhz) for UMTS? or a way to see if i can activate it if its available but inactive? I try 2 phones (a friend of mine bought one, same model) and is the exact same behavior on both.
See my signature about adding bands.
At least you can check if it is enabled and perhaps try to add it too

I haven't tried adding bands yet. I'm interested since Viva is rolling out 4G service in the next few months. If my HTC 10 isn't compatible with their 4G or 3G (even though they said it will be), then I'll be looking at adding more bands.

Thanks for the sugestion. I did not follow your method since CDMA Tools is no longrer available in DEMO version and licences are really expensive (100+ Dollars) to just test. I followed the method suggested by @fffft (That can be found here) since it applyes to all Qualcomm devices using QPST and QXMD.
Long story short, I had to Root, set a custom recovery, a custom ROM and even a custom Kernel to try the method but It did not work to me. The irony of all of this is that technically I my HTC 10 has all bands available to be used. See the picture Attached.

Unlocking LTE Band 4

Hi all, I've been reading a few threads trying to find out if it's possible to enable band 4 on an international version of this phone. I don't have it right now, I'm thinking of buying it. It's quite low on amazon right now, 418$. And only downside is my carrier uses band 4.
So is it truly possible? I've seen some people did it but haven't really specified how.
Thanks a lot!
You're better off just paying a little more for a US unlocked version that has band 4 or buying a carrier specific version. There's been a lot of talk and discussion as to whether bands can be unlocked on the HTC 10, and while there is no final yes or no answer, there does not seem to be a clear guide on how unlock LTE bands at this point, at least not without a completely custom kernel or having to do some highly technical tweaking using a lot of programs. I would highly recommend not purchasing a foreign device in hopes of unlocking bands. Try buying a used device in near or perfect condition instead if you're trying to save a little money.

I will go for the US version or another phone then. Don't want to mess around with yo highly technical things.
Thanks a lot!
I'm in almost the same boat, except I bought what I thought was a US unlocked phone,. and what I received from Swappa was an international. I'm pretty upset because I don't know how likely they'll accept a return. Now if I can add band 4 through some method or other, with a hopefully straightforward (complicated is ok) procedure, then I'd be fine with keeping it.

The closest method I've seen to being able to unlock bands requires a few things: root, TWRP, s-off, and a custom Verizon based rom (Leedroid or Viper).
Essentially, you need a Verizon based rom because the phone is unable to unlock bands through GSM and only able to unlock bands through CDMA, which means Verizon (being a CDMA based wireless operator) would allow this. Once the ROM is loaded, you'd have to use QXDM and DFS tools to change the NV value that would give access to the bands you're looking for (there should be a thread or two on this, one of which is called "Unlock LTE Bands on the HTC 10 forums and another called "[How To] Edit All Networks on ALL M9's" that kind of serves as the foundation regarding most attempts at editing bands.). T
Theoretically, following these steps would allow access to other LTE bands, but I haven't seen anyone post a 100 percent straight forward guide from start to finish that illustrated gaining specific LTE Bands, which leads me to think that there's currently no way to conclusively add LTE bands without a custom kernel built from the ground up. All of the threads kind of stop halfway in their tracks indicating that no one has officially found a way to add LTE bands. Some people have claimed to of done so but have provided no evidence on how they've achieved this or what steps (start to finish) they did to accomplish this. The information is all over the place regarding this, so until someone finalizes a guide that goes through the process start to finish, I would recommend seeing about returning the phone. This phone has also been out for quite some time, so at this point, I don't know if an official method will ever be created to implement other LTE bands.
I don't know how this works through Swappa since I haven't used it personally, but if you can, I'd return the phone.

Lg g4 as991 - work on gsm europe

Hello, I am searching about that topic all over the internet for a long time but without good result so I decide to open topic here.
Is there any way to make LG G4 AS991 work on GSM network in Europe ?
I have one but when I insert GSM sim card it's not working. Network isn't available
I heard that somehow it's possible.
any help will be much appreciated.
I'm guessing you made a typo in the title and your model is actually us991. Same bad luck has fallen on to me and I bought the worst model of this great phone.
Unfortunately as of 2017/10 you are still unable to root the carrier free US991 nor can you get mobile internet on it in Europe.
You can get connection and make calls/send SMS in Europe by going into your mobile data settings and switching modes around, but nothing you do can get you mobile internet: 3g nor LTE.
You can tell you have the carrier unlocked model vs the US Cellular (as they share the same exact name) if your firmware version in 'About phone' ends with an 'a', eg US91121a.
All this information I gathered myself from reading these forums, a bit of reddit and educating myself a little about LTE and whatnot, so if anyone comes up with a solution in the future - I can no longer get rid of the expensive paperweight

LG G7 Unlocked - Brightpoint?

I ordered a LG GM710ULM from a well-reviewed seller on eBay. It was listed as new condition.
I received it yesterday and on the box, the model says LM710ULMBLTPL. I think the "PL" is for the Platinum. When I booted it up, the model number is the LM-710ULM, the serial number is populated, and the software version is the 11g and security patch is November 2018. When I tried to "Check for updates" , it said there were no updates available. There's no SIM card in it, so I'm not sure if that affects the ability to check updates. I don't see any signs of any carrier apps. All
When I looked up the IMEI on one of the free checkers, it comes back with the model as LMG710ULM, but the network is listed as "ABC Brightpoint" and Location is "N". As I've poked around, it looks like this is some sort of regional variant, but still from the U.S. But I can't find any cell provider named "Brightpoint".
When I checked the IMEI on T-Mobile's website, it gave me an error. But when I used the chat support feature, the rep was able to look it up and confirm it's not blacklisted and should be able to be activated on T-mobile. When I ran the IMEI through Verizon's online checker, it told me it wasn't compatible with Verizon's network. Which is a bit unsettling since the unlocked version should be able to be activated on any network.
Can anyone offer some insight on what the Brightpoint version is and how it may be different from the plain vanilla 710ULM ? Willl it be covered by the LG manufacturer warranty and get updates? Is there any way to be sure it's not refurb or flashed?
Thanks!
The fact that you have a populated serial number is a good sign. Brightpoint has released legitimate firmware for the ULM model, but I still no nothing about them as a company (might be worth a search of the forms... I think I remember someone talking about them as an LG partner). As seen here, I think the 11g update was the last update they released, but it should be possible to switch over to GFI or LG's vanilla USA firmware (this will likely require the use of LGUP), both of which are the same as far as I can tell, however there are different contact and dialer apps that get used depending on which network you are on, as well a Google Fi app that is either enabled or disabled by default.
Regardless of what the VZW website said, you should have access to all 4 major carriers in the US. I don't know if you have a specific provider in mind or a solution that uses multiple carriers such as Google Fi or Straight Talk, but you should be good to go (although I would recommend flashing to the latest "USA" kdz, which sadly is still not Pie!)
This is exactly what happened to me. What did you find out? What did you end up doing? I was expecting the ULM.AUSAPL model but got the ULM.BPTPL. Apparently Brightpoint is a CDMA company. Does this mean not all GSM bands will be accessible on this BPT firmware? Ya, seems their latest update is still from 12/2018 (11g) instead of USA firmware from 3/2019 (10j). Trying not to have to flash/root. Odd that Verizon said not compatible when it too is CDMA? Really having trouble finding the TRUE factory unlocked ULM.AUSA version. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Any info? Really would like to know what you found out. Did you keep the phone? Encounter any problems? ANY info would be greatly appreciated. DeeBG: maybe you can answer this: (BrightPoint is CDMA "provider" for all those tiny regional carriers) Since this "factory unlocked" ULM version is BPT does this mean that some or all of the GSM frequency bands are "disabled" for this model? And the USA version (GSM according to LG) has the CDMA bands "disabled"? And the GFI has all bands "enabled"? (for Fi auto switching) Is this how it works or what? Very confusing. Please help clarify this. Thanks.
I got one of the ULM versions off the bay too recently....it would not work on VZN...they denied activating it. I believe it does not have some bands needed. No pie for it either....so sent it back and got the VM version for vzn.

Sadly the confusion + lack of information is rampant for this phone, and this is down to one major reason. The chipset used in all LG G7 phones is the same (Qualcomm Snapdragon 845), however due to carrier subsidies and other sketchy reasons, the active bands are dictated by whoever sold the phone.
There are two providers in the US that I'm aware of that make use of all four major networks (those being Google Fi and Straight Talk). There are multiple free and ad-supported apps in the Google Play store that claim to be able to tell you which bands are supported by your phone (I only know of their existence and so cannot recommend one that's more accurate than another).
Thanks for responding! Boy..............."lack of information for this phone" is the understatement of the year! You aren't kidding! I've been trying to find out more for days but seem to get either very basic answers or different answers from different sources. So frustrating! Even LG is very vague in their answers. Just want to know if I will encounter any problems trying to use this on GSM networks when this is technically on CDMA firmware? And just cross-flashing this to the USA firmware will NOT "enable" all the GSM bands, right? RR125: A bunch of reflashed G7's have been being sold online, making my search for true answers even more frustrating. Did it come factory sealed? Meaning clear round stickers on both the sides? If not, then you may have received one of the models being reflashed to make it look like it is a ULM model. Which is bait and switch and illegal.
I'm in the same boat. I signed up for Google Fi and purchased my G710ULM from Amazon a couple months ago. I experienced issues immediately. WiFi calling didn't work; every time it was enabled I could see ER081 up top. After 1.5 months of terrible service, I downloaded Signal Spy and came to the realization that I was only ever connecting to T-Mobile. If I attempted to manually switch to the Sprint network, I'd get a message like "configuring mobile data". After about a couple minutes, my SIM card would lock and it told me to reboot my phone. If I attempted to switch to U.S. Cellular's network, I would get phone and data, but my phone number changed to a Nebraska number (note, I live in Missouri).
At about that time, I started researching the different firmware versions (with great difficulty) and found that I had a Brightpoint-specific firmware (11g). I've since used LGUP to flash to firmware 10j (Google Fi's latest G710ULM firmware). This has improved but not fixed my situation. I can now make WiFi calls, I can connect to T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular and keep my phone number on U.S. Cellular. However, when I attempt to connect to Sprint, I still get that "configuring mobile data" message and the SIM card locks. I ordered a new SIM card from Google Fi a couple days back and intend to test this phone with the updated card, but I've got a feeling that something else is at play here preventing me from connecting to Sprint.
Similar to other people, I did an IMEI lookup and while it comes up on the free IMEI checker sites, most of the main networks' checkers (ATT, TMobile, Verizon, Sprint) tell me that the phone is either incompatible with their network or they can't find it in their DB.
Potential SIM card issues aside, does anyone have any other ideas why I may not be able to connect to Sprint?
-Nick
It could always be a hardware issue but it sounds like the phone is not getting provisioned to work on Sprint. Can you verify SprintDM.apk is installed? You will likely need to install a third party app such as system app safe remover from Play store.

Brightpoint sells both cdma & gsm LG phones and are distributors nowadays who sell to other carriers.
The bands on the phone are locked and not capable of being used unless you unlock them via qpst or cdma workshop.
But these firmwares provided have them directly locked in the kernel.

So if a Brightpoint ULM model was flashed with GFI ULM kdz why should it be GSM only unless they are different hardware version like TM? ULM hardware devices should support CDMA LTE bands.

Snapdragon 845 no matter what phone will come with the same qualcomm modem as no manufacturer/carrier will take the extra cost to modify design.
But since the bands are locked via nvram, its upto the manufacturer and/or the distributer that loads the software to choose what will be locked or unlocked.
Bands can be locked via android kernel, but operators do nvram to protect phones from being used out of what they need or want.

Where can I find the truth about LTE-bands and G8 models?

Hi,
I have problems finding "facts" about the G8 and the LTE bands different models support.
On some pages, like
https://www.getdroidtips.com/lg-g8-...lm-g820um-g820n-g820ua-g820v-g820tm-and-more/
they claim that if you go for the G820QM or G820QM7 you will have maximum coverage.
But either I'm doing things wrong , or , the truth is more complicated.
The bands I really NEED in Sweden are 3,7,8 & 20 , but since I travel a bit I would like as many bands as possible open.
My phone was from the beginning an AT&T bloatware LMG820UM (A9), but now I think it's more like a LMG820QM (A12).
(And unfortunately Band 8 doesn't work. )
Does anyone have a good link to a page that tells the truth or a good way to open up bands ?
Thanks!

Probably the most trust worthy I've seen would be GsmAreana. If you follow this link it's for the G8, and it indicates the us Open version supports band 8.
'Open up bands'? Doesn't exist, to my knowledge. Some think the 'hidden system menu' has an option to 'select bands', but in my experience all that menu does is allow you to 'test' for certain bands, to see if they connect. It doesn't 'make it available', as some wish. For the most part, if it's not listed as being a band the rom supports, it's probably not going to connect to it.

Now I have tried a few different "QM" versions on my phone (that once was an AT&T with "UM").
Right now I flashed it "T-mobile" with a pink start up-screen.
None of those crossflashed firmwares seem to make my phone to connect to LTE band 8.
(My old G7 connects to band8 very often, with good signal).
I'm starting to think that crossflashing doesn't change the frequency bands at all..
If I go in to the service menu, and ONLY pick band 8, it will connect and use only that.
If I select 3,7,8 & 20 it will never connect to 8.
I'm a bit lost with this.. I wonder if my phone still, deep inside, believes it is an UM and shouldn't use band 8.
Maybe time to Ebay it..

So it does connect to 8? As you say. Well that means the other bands have a stronger signal, and that's why they are being chosen and not 8. Your other phone that gets 8 well, does it have the ability to connect to the other bands on other phone? Maybe that's why that one always chooses 8?
And yes, I guarantee you, a different rom will have different bands enabled. Just the way it is.

Yes, my other phone, the LG G7, connects to all bands needed (3,7,8,20) when I travel to work without any problems.
