Zenfone 2 (2 gb ram) emulators - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I will probably receive a Zenfone 2 (2 gb ram model) for my school promotion
Uhm, I was wondering about emulation, the most interesting thing for me in an Android smartphone~ (I'm interested in Dreamcast, ppsspp, ps one, ds and probably Dolphin emulation)
I recently listen to my friends who have the 4 gb version and they found it awesome!
There would be a lack from the 2 gb to 4? Ah, how much is the ram consume in idle?
Thanks in advance to everyone!

I don't think so

I say 2 GB is good enough to play emulations so there is no lack from 2 gb to 4 gb. I don't know how much Ram is being consumed during gameplay, but I monitored and I'd say a moderate amount is being used. I tried all the emulators you listed above and they run pretty fast and smooth like butter, except for the Dolphin emulator.

Xperia Play vs Atrix

I got an upgrade available to get a play for $50, and I'm wondering how great they are. I've been getting annoyed at the touch screen controls for gaming, and want a controller finally.
However, I'm worried as to how smooth, responsive, and great the graphics are with psx emulators or games like GTA3.
My Atrix is unlocked, rooted, and running CM7.
I saw quadrant scores at ~1700 with xperia play and got worried seeing as I score ~3500 no problem, and with Antutu the Atrix gets much much higher scores than the play especially in 3D and CPU.
Does anyone have experience with both phones and can give me some ideas as to how they perform against eachother?
with the exception of the screen, the play is going to be slightly slower/worse in most respects, mine generally doesnt lag, but it happens on occasion, the tegra2 gpu is not much better than whats in the play, so gaming wise its not far behind the atrix. the browser is ok, but im expecting a big boost to usability on that front when we get ics with hw acceleration. As a phone, the play is pretty good, not amazing, but it gets the job done.
It really comes down to the hw controller, yes, theres plenty of phones out that are better than the play, but if u want to play a game, i would take the play, every time. playing things like sonic cd, or super metroid, mario 64, crash bandicoot, etc etc etc(i have about 6k+ games on my phone, ranging from nes through to n64 and everything in between almost) the play dominates the competition, 99% of those games play and feel as good or better than they originally did to play....and that in itself is amazing, and its not just emulators the games on the market are very often xplay optimized as well, its kinda suprising given the plays relatively small market share just how many are actually optimized for this little unit.
i bought mine for $450 outright with the option of an sgs2 at about $550, maybe 6 months ago, and do not regret the purchase, ive used a few sgs2's and whilst nice, good luck playing a game an enjoying it, im not sure what im gonna do if they dont end up releasing a play 2....

Couldn't have said it better myself
Although I can say that GTA runs fine for me. I'm not sure how it runs on the Atrix, but on the Play it runs pretty much the same as the PS2 version
Upgraded from an unlocked 1.3 OCed Atrix I like my play much better. Most apps are written to work on 600—800 MHZ single cores so basically the second core doesn't do much. And most "tegra exclusive" games have ported to other phones and run 100% smooth (beat GOF2 two months ago)

How did GOF2 perform with the graphics and framerate? Did it look the same?
Also, how good is the responsiveness on websites, flash, streaming YouTube, Netflix, and texting in general?
Also, are you able to use the SD to install apps? That's one big thing I don't like is storage space.
My xperia play is extremely responsive in the internet browser and pretty much any other app that I use. I upgraded from an OG droid like a year ago and the xperia play felt incredibly fast. I just overclocked my xperia play to 1.6ghz now and it's even more fast. PSX emulation's performance is to the point where it feels as if it were made for the xperia play; the games just work flawlessly with the game pad. I have grand theft auto 3 also and it plays really smooth.

Very nice hearing that.
I still need to figure out if there's a way to use my 16gb as card for app storage because I have roughly 10gbs of apps/games on my phone.
I'd use up that 400mb in a second.
Also, can I adjust the PPI or resolution to match that of the Atrix since the screens are the same size?
Is there any video out for gaming on a TV?
Overall, I'm probably going to get it and sell my Atrix, I'm just trying to plan for it since my biggest problem is that memory issue. Going from 16gb internal to 400mb is a rough one for me.

I have like 76 apps and the majority give you the option to put most of the app data on your sd card. i have 182mb internal free space with all these apps, but I did remove all of the stock verizon apps too
I used titanium backup to force move a majority of my apps to the sdcard. Have over 300 apps and still have around 180mb of free space. Have my phone overclocked to 1.2 and it just flies. I am running the Verizon stock Tom minus all the crapware they put on. Great phone, love it. Games like shadowgun, modern combat 3 are all smooth and awesome to play.

the xperia play is a great phone
but i see it as if you have to consider the benefits of a xperia play over another phone then the xperia probably isnt for you. most people will instantly see that the hardware controls are its selling point and buy it for that. to use for emulators mostly.
Just tried out a xperia play today, I'm going to buy one. They got a sale right now that its free with a 2 year contract. It was smooth online and the launcher was awesome. I tried asphalt 6 on it and compared it to my phone in HD, and I couldn't notice the HD difference, but it ran perfect.
Ill be buying it next week and selling my Atrix for $200 so basically I get 2.5 months free

You can use a stock Motorola 16 gb SD on this phone, it comes with an 8. I just swapped them between my Droid and this when I got it. However you're better off buying a Sandisk 32 GB class 4 card if you want the best performance.
There is no video out.
You also cannot adjust the screen resolution unless you root the device.
I find it amazing that a phone with a gamepad doesn't have a video out..

Galaxy on Fire plays pretty well... I'm midway through it, and I've had my share of action with lots of ships and all around shooting and what not, and the Play delivers flawlessly.
Just got my play, the thinner screen is taking some time to get used to.
Right now im bored because im not unlocked yet. Still gotta pay that guy $25 to get it done.

is 2gb ram necessary for a phone?? isnt 1gb ram good enough??

just wondering since lg nexus got 2gb ram and our gnex got 1gb.and most ram remains free..ao wats the point of giving 2gb ram??
Twice the RAM is the point.
future proofing. And as soon as another phone comes out with more ram, you get the crybabies to say "why does our phone only have 1gb of ram if it is newer than phones with 2gb?"
i think 2gb ram is quite unnecessary..it is quite tough to use up 1gb ram as android is very good at multi tasking.
the reason it is good at multitasking is because it is constantly closing apps, this action can be alleviated a bit with extra ram thus creating a more fluid user experience. Also it is a competitive market, this gives google something to brag about. Also remember these are used more as micro-tablets, pushing to 2gb opens doors to better games. It is much better to have unused ram than to have not enough. I personally would rather get a phone and in 6 months when a cool game comes out i know my phone can play it as opposed to struggling.
More RAM also means more internet browser tabs that can be switched around without having to reload them. Overall it results in better user experience.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Exactly for the reasons listed above. More multitasking at every level
Isn't 48K RAM plenty? My Apple ][+ ran fine with that much back in 1982. Sheesh.
i could also play modern combat 3 on my sgs i9000 lag free.. i think 1gb is enough for me
It's the same evolution as was seen in the PC market from the 90's to present. My first computer only had 640kB memory, then came 2 MB, then 4 MB and so on.
It might not be needed today to have that much RAM, but games and applications get more advanced and to be able to keep a good multitasking environment operational in the future you will need more RAM.
I welcome the change in RAM size to make the phone usable in the future as well.
It's like saying we don't need quad core processor... Sure, you don't need it now, but it's good to have and your phone can handle more advanced programs than duel core.
Also I have hard time keeping my apps that I like in memory, even if I have 1GB, so I'm personally looking forward to 2GB
I won't be happy until 8GB of RAM is the norm. That's the point at which I'll be running a Windows 8 virtual machine on top of Android just to be sardonic.
1gb is probably fine for now but I can see it being useful in a year or so. I think I am going to stick with the galaxy nexus until next years nexus but I am eagerly waiting the nexus 4 hands on reviews.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Better multitasking and faster switching between apps. Personally I'd rather have as much RAM as possible without causing too much of an increase on the price of the phone. Getting slowdowns from running out of RAM is annoying and except for the price I don't really see any downsides for having more. One can always buy a lower spec phone if they think that 2Gb is too much.
Also as others have said having more RAM makes the phone a bit more future proof. For example my previous phone (HTC Desire) has only 576Mb RAM which certainly doesn't make the experience any more pleasant when using current Jelly Bean ROMs. And it's still "only" 2 years old phone...

For this time. Playing Games on Note 8.0 is ok. I have Fifa 2012, MC4, Fieldrunner 2, Real Rancing 3 and them run ok. But, I think for a longtime isn't good choice.
My son just got this tablet and I can tell you every game we have put on it has worked flawlessly. For us any game that works on my 10.1 has played as well if not better on the note 8 (including real racing 3).

All devices with Exynos 4412 are proved to be great in stability test, almost no throttling.
I'm doing a complete thumb suck here, but I expect the mali400 gpu that's in the Note 8.0 to start showing it's age in a year to two years.
What I mean by that is top games will still be very playable... But lag will become more and more noticeable in certain areas of the game. Either that or some of the bells and whistles will be turned off in the version that's 'officially' available to us on the Play Store.
After all... There will be a never ending push for ever more demanding games to 'show off' just how much better flagship devices are to previous generations. The Note 8.0 has a weaker gpu than the phone I bought 2 years ago... It can't be *that* much longer before it can no longer keep pace...
Just sayin....

The note 8 is very fast but uses the Mali 400 GPU, an older (is it two years old now?) GPU.
For gaming, I'd hold off until after Google I/O to see what devices are announced. If the N7 is refreshed with the Mali 604 or so (and/or a Tegra 4) and a decent display, you might want to wait until it can be ordered.
In ordinary use, the GN8 is the fastest Android device I've used, and has the least lag of any Android device I've used. The Nexus 7 is very good, but it's just not playing in this league. I'm sure there are some Tegra optimized games that the N7 will do better on, but the UI overall is not this quick.
Incredibly fast in my use, and I play numerous graphics intensive games. DEFINITELY better than n7, trust me, I've owned both

Can the Mali 400 GPU be overclocked with a custom kernel in order to squeese a little more performance from it?
Overclocking the Tegra 2 GPU on my ASUS Transformer as well as the CPU made a big difference in its gaming performance.

I'm having a little trouble tracking down exactly when the Mali-400 MP gpu was first released, but here's an article on it from 2008: !!!
http://beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=48319
It was still a pretty beefy gpu in the Galaxy SII in 2011... But as far as I know was upstaged by the Adreno 220, which was to be found in the HTC Sensation (the phone I bought in 2011).
Some more info from back then:

[Q] What can i do about the lag?

General question i realize. But even when playing simple games like candy crush it feels like my old note 2 was faster and my now iPhone 5s is definitely less lagging or not at all. I like the tablet but feel like i should have gotten the 8 instead. Im in south korea and got this at a PX; because tablets here are outrageously high. Should i put a rom on it? all i use it for is media, games, surfing, and reading.

I'm going to assume you have the T210 since you didn't say.
Your "old note 2" has much better specs than this Tab. Note 2 has Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A9, with 2g of ram
Tab 3 T210 has dual-core Marvel 1.2 GHz with 1g of ram.
Yes, a custom rom will help, but it can only do so much with those specs.
From what you have said. I'll either keep it for what im using it for and deal w the lag or sell and buy the 8inch model. thanks
Option, power saving mode, un check cpu power. Something it turn auto and make your games lag. Only use the cpu power for when you are going to sleep

Real world experiences upgrade from 3GB/32GB to 4GB/128GB?

Hi,
I am using my 3GB 32GB version but find that web browsing etc is a step behind Snapdragon 820 class devices and simply miles off my iPad. Even with Chrome 53.
I wonder if the extra Ram and better CPU *might* improve some tasks such as this? I can all my model now so the cost of upgrade isn't "massive" - maybe £100. Id happily spend that if I got any noticeable improvements.
Anyone done this? Real world experiences?
