[Q&A]How to root your Samsung Galaxy s6 or s6 Edge - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S6

Sorry ~ I got this totally wrong, sorry for the misconfusion.

@KetOfficial
You do realize that there are not any Sprint S6 devices listed on that page? Also, that method does not work for 5.1.1...

Tried to root with Ping Pong; nervous to try this
Hi,
II was hoping you could help me. I am kind of a nooby. I have rooted several of my phones over the years, but I don't ever flash "custom recovery" or ROMs. I just root so I can refuse the OTA updates and get free hotspot. I've been searching the threads for help, but I don't understand some of the technical jargon that is used on these sites.
I just got the Sprint Galaxy S6. I have followed the directions for rooting with Ping Pong. I have tried both 5.1 and 6. When I use 5.1, I get a message that says SuperUser not installed? Did you install SuperUser before root? When I try to open SuperUser, I get a message that says "SuperUser binary not installed. If you recently upgraded to 5.0 root manually. I have re-installed like some of the posts suggest, but get the same result.
If I use Ping Pong 6, it tells me my device is not supported. ????
My ROM is G920PVU1AOCF
Android Version 5.0.2
I have not installed 5.1, but it has downloaded on my phone. I keep getting a message telling me to install it. Can you please help and advise me? I;m nervous to try your method, because the ping pong method didn't work. Where do I find the samsung drivers to install? Will your method trip Knox? Thanks in advance.

If hotspot is the only reason you root, you don't need root to have the free hotspot man, there is a thread that gives accurate instructions, if you have your MSL number (easy to get via Sprint chat) and follow the instructions 100% it works, and yes it works on 5.1.1, I was using it a little bit ago at the airport

Ping Pong panics the kernel so u have to put ur phone in Airplane mode after you've hit download. I forgot to ask, is your kernel build before or after May 15? If after u won't be able to use Ping Pong!

I sent a PM to the OP.
Honestly the OP is probably just trying to help, but with this specific model not being listed on CF Page he linked.. its misleading.
Someone could flash the wrong variant. Hopefully he sees this and edits his post.
There isn't a specific listing for the Sprint S6 on there for CF Auto Root.
Don't download anything unless it says SM-G920P.
You don't need to use CF Auto Root for Sprint
Theres 2 ways to do it right now on 5.02
1. Tripping Knox - by installing TWRP recovery, then simply a zip of SU within twrp
2. Not tripping knox- Doing PingPong Method
If you are on 5.1 then i suggest monitoring this thread since its updated.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s6/general/how-to-to-100-stock-root-t3075448
Just a side note for anyone... To hard power off the phone since you cant battery pull.. hold volume down and power for 10 seconds.

Under Kernel version it reads:
Sun Mar 29 20:59:58 KST 2015
So, it should work if I put my phone in airplane mode? After I download apk and before I install it?
I tired of this constant reminder to install update!

Stock update with root?

Is it possible to update the software of the phone with it being rooted? I haven't flashed any roms to it. I don't plan on flashing roms, until something real stable comes out.

Hello 'AnaMayShun'.
Based on my experience and extensive reading throughout this site I truly do not believe you will or can receive your service provider's OTA updates when your mobile phone is ROOTED. You will have to UNROOT your mobile phone first (Back to Stock). Hope this helps.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I did that process a week ago. And last night, I noticed another update. So I'm not sure if there's a new update for Sprint or if the update didn't go through last time. Thanks for your response.
Hello Guys/Girls.
Before I do anything I NEED an answer to a question.
First, Let me tell you what I have.
Sprint S III (SPH-L710)
Build number ending with "LG8".
I was able to ROOT my phone by following QBKing77 video. My question is... Where are the instructions and files needed for me to UnRoot my mobile phone? Taking it back to original Stock of course. :fingers-crossed:
Thank you in advance for your prompt reply.

I looked at that video many times, but before following the video I NEED to know that it is for Build number ending in LG8.
ok to all questions
Lg8 is the latest. Should be abt 39mb in size
You can receive an update with root if your system isn't modified, being rooted alone it should work provided u have all stock apps still installed, however you will lose root with the it and have to reroot. Flash team epics root from recovery zip to keep root after OTA.
Unrooting is as simple as flashing a stock rom in Odin or opening terminal or adb and typing:
su
rm system/app/Superuser.apk
rm system/xbin/su

Thank you or your reply. I am already on the LG8 Build and after reviewing QBKing77 video many times he stated that you have to UnRoot the device to receive an OTA update via Sprint. Has it changed since? Also, I am noticing many people encountering issues too. Not good. :crying:
You mentioned using the SU command. Which 'terminal' emulator do you recommend I download and install. Also, which custom Rom do you use and like for your S III?

Any of the terminal apps from the market should do. Personally I don't like ROMs based on stock and am switching between CM10/AOKP myself. And this app would probly do u some good as opposed to the terminal method https://play.google.com/store/apps/...le&utm_medium=organic&utm_term=ota+rootkeeper
Really pretty simple, once rooted use voodoo OTA rootkeper(from the market) and temporarily unroot then "accept" the update and reroot with voodoo works perfectly
Not to jump on the thread, but can you explain the process using root keeper.

Doesn't look like mskip has added i317 model yet.
I flashed CWM 6 for i317 and installed superSU 0.97 via CWM. It seemed to do the trick.
Be wary that the phone not only counts flash attempts, but also has a flag for whether the phone has been modified. If the phone is flagged you will lose the ability to do OTA updates.

i'm with Rogers, but from my limited knowledge the big three Canadian carriers are using the i317 model?
You can grab the i317 cwm recovery from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901196 - scroll down to "first upload(2012/09/23)"
you can grab supersu cwm flash zip from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053 - third link under download
again i warn you that you can't ota update after this, but getting rid of rogers bloatware through titanium backup was much more worth it for me for the time being :d.
Perhaps you can tell me this, are there any ota updates out of the box? Or is it updated already?

Would you recommend this root process, or do you think it best to wait for mskip to post an update to add 317 support to his tools? I have rooted many an android tablet, but have never had to deal with a phone before. Why no OTA updates after achieving root? I noticed people passing their #1234# on, does this mean that we are overwriting our EFI partitions which hold some of our unique identifier number, etc. As I said, I'm not used to the phone partition structure, or the use of odin, but have spent quite a bit of time in adb and cwm.
Cheers
EDIT: Sorry, I just reread your post and noticed the quote about the 'modify flag', and then being denied OTA updates. Stupid me, I then decided to go to the source, Triangle Away, and found out it is related to the counter in a hidden boot block. Ignore basically everything I had asked, I know better than to post without searching first. Sorry.
I just got mine from Rogers today. Am with Virgin, and since Virgin is owned by Bell (or Virgin uses Bell network), I took my sim from iphone and put it in GN2 and it worked instantly.

Im an anroid noob, so need to do some research before I root. I dont have ANY bloatware, so thats not an issue.

Is there a good FAQ somewhere? I have looked at a couple but they seem device specific. My questions are regarding the actual root then ROMs. I would imagine that since a ROM changes the entire OS, it must change the root? Or once the stock rom is rooted, they all are? Stupid noob questions, that im sure a FAQ would answer.
Cheers, and thanks again!

Hi turilo,
I apologize for the noob questions - I'm new to the Andriod ecosystem and I just got a Note 2 (Rogers) and have a couple of questions.
1. You rooted your device and what exactly did that accomplish? It appears you were able to get rid of the Rogers bloatware. So all the red colored Rogers app icons and software are gone? What else is the benefit of rooting your device in particular? Is it faster and the battery lasts longer? Please be as specific as you can.
2. Did your device retain all the TouchWiz and S-pen funtionality after being rooted? In other words rooting did not make your phone a pure Andriod system? I also have a Google Nexus 7 and can see differences in the OS compared to the Note 2, so I'm assuming the differences are "enhancements" (depending on your perspective ofcourse ) that Samsung put in.
3. As someone else mentioned, now that you will not be able to get updates OTA, does this mean that when Samsung releases the update to allow multi window or any other update for their software, you won't get that automatically? Is this not something to be concerned about? I would want to get any updates to the S-pen or TouchWiz for instance.
4. Does the above also mean that when Android 4.1.2 becomes available, you will have to update your device manually using some archane process? ie, you won't be able to do this simply from the Settings menu and click on update software?
5. Last noob question - for Andriod idiots like me (I'm a little bit techy - I jailbroke my iPhone back in the day, but would rather not root my Andriod phone unless the benefits outweigh the disadvantages - get rid of Rogers bloatware, keep the Touch Wiz and S-Pen functionality, improved battery life, faster processing etc), can you point to a link that explains how to do this for Andriod dummies?
Thanks!

Glad you got it working! That ping pong method is awesome, rooted last weekend. Still have stock recovery and have been using Flashfire by Chainfire for flashing needs, although I still haven't flashed a ROM because it looks like they all come with a kernel, which will trip KNOX...I think, could be wrong on that though.

ROOT THREAD! It's here!

Just followed these directions and I have root on my Verizon Galaxy S7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s7/how-to/root-s7-att-g930a-g935a-t3410538
Currently flashing (via flashfire) Xposed framework
What's the update? You get xda on there? I don't trust an att root for my verizon phone.
I never took any OTA's on my phone. This is PB1. I haven't seen any glitches with it yet. YMMV.
Did you get g935 or g930?
title says all
I can confirm successful root on Verizon Galaxy S7 on their most recent/latest OTA G930VVRU2APE1 using these steps. Naturally, you use the G930x file @brandon110 (the G935x is for Edge variants).

You may have the wrong version of ODIN. There's a variant made by PrinceComsy that bypasses the hash check to allow the flash.
Specifically, you want this version:
http://d-h.st/gsDA (Odin3 v3.12/PrinceComsy)
You also want ONE of these rooted boot images:
http://d-h.st/o3hm (any Galaxy S7)
http://d-h.st/kDWz (any Galaxy S7 Edge)
Make sure you grab the right version.

He shouldn't need that for the Verizon variant. That was only for AT&T and I was able to flash the boot file with the current version of Odin (not the one posted in that thread.)

Rebooted device..tried again...success!
Thanks guys
I just flashed the most recent PE1 build just so I'm as up to date as possible and re-rooted it again. Very simple root and it seems to work quite well. I have missed root.
Malicious, malicious ODIN link. Shame on you.

I tried this and my phone got stuck on the Verizon logo. Held down the buttons to go back into download mode, and powered off. The blue LED is staying on, even when "powered off". I think a lot of these files are bad. There were adware in them.

Nope, I downloaded and used every file in the link just fine.
I summarized and re-linked everything in my topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...-to-notes-root-install-xposed-unroot-t3411039
Sounds like you've got something else going on :/

I got it to work. But those links are full of ads and adware.

Glad you good it working. I'd run through Adblock... didn't see any ads here. Maybe the files should be moved to another host.
Anyone else getting a weird VoLTE icon on the status bar?

It tells me to turn off adblock before I can even access the page. dev-host is the worst site to put files on.

I have found a working temp root method for 5.1.1

I found a bootloader unlock method for the Verizon variant of this phone, however after trying it on my phone I was able to get temp root on my AT&T Note 4. I have not tried to unlock the bootloader yet, but I will keep you guys posted.
Here is the link: galaxynote4root/galaxy-note-4-root/how-to-root-unlock-bootloader-on-galaxy-note-4/2/ (add .com infront of the first root , I can't post links yet)
(Make sure that on step 9 and up to change the file name in the command to n4-2 instead of n4-fix)
(Download everything except the Verizon stuff)
Final edit: This method only works for root, the bootloader can't be unlocked for AT&T because there was never a developer edition released for it.
Note: The root is extremely buggy and unstable, so it is not that usable. Hopefully someone else can make a root better for this device.
How did the temp root go? Doesn't it reboot after a while and then lose the root?

It is very unstable and slow but it works, I'm probably going to install a different rom if I can unlock the bootloader.

Great going buddy!
How long has it been running with root? Does it survive a reboot?
I do hope you can unlock the bootloader, so we csn install custom ROMs and Kernels!

It does not survive a reboot, however root although it slows the phone down seems to be working fine. I'm still trying to unlock the bootloader.
Nice to see someone take the bold risk. I hope you find success. I think everyone blew this off because this method was for Verizon and it tricks the phone to make it recognized as a Devloper model who come bootloader unlocked. AT&T does not have developer model devices so chances are this method will not unlock 910A bootloaders.
Wish you luck! There's a bounty thread here somewhere..
I saw on the other thread you temp bricked your phone attempting a bootloader unlock..hope you do unlock it without bricking your phone..
Problem with my note 4 please helppp !!

you are in the wrong thread
Your variant for the Note 4 is the international variant
This thread is for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

This temp-root doesn't let us access the system partition
This type of root has been recognized by this community for several months and we dismissed as worthless because DM-Verity removes the root after every reboot and I am surprised you guys haven't gotten a brick yet because, on Android 5.1.1, Samsung added a security method where if anyone roots with Kingroot/KingORoot and reboot, you get a message saying that the kernel isn't from AT&T before fully booting up

I unbricked it, bootloader can't be unlocked though, also I realized that kingoroot works on 5.1.1. It might be due to the file that I pushed for temp root, so now I have temp root on my phone that isn't that unstable.
Thanks for attempting to root though. We might have to look into other exploits to get a stable one. Or maybe there isnt one and its the end of the road on our journey to find it.
Update on how kingroot workin now?

ok, so first of all
Go into Download mode. How to get there?
Turn off your phone entirely, and then when it has been fully turned off, hold down the power button, home button, and volume down button all at once until you get a warning screen. Press the volume down button and it should give you all the information about the phone without the system being all jacked up
Its should say if you have SM-N910F (International Variant) or SM-N910A (AT&T Variant)
