Unlocked AT&T S3 I747 for MetroPCS/TMobile

Has anyone here bought an unlocked AT&T S3 to use on the MetroPCS/Tmobile network? If so has there been any issues? shorter battery life, bad connectivity?
I am debating getting the S3 unlocked or HTC One S. I would prefer the HTC One S but it doesn't have microSD slot

I have a SGH T999 Lte at&t branded unlocked and use on TMobile with the T999L lte rom with no ill effects.

Is that the same model as my phone? So it would be advisable, after I got the S3 to flash it with a MetroPCS ROM after activation by Metro?
I thought there would be no need of a flash if I got an unlocked phone.

You will have issues with 3G HSPA+ on 1700mhz, but 2G EDGE & 4G LTE will work just fine. If you live in a large metro area with a lot of LTE coverage it will be fine. I just went through this with my wife's phone, she had to have the Red one (AT&T specific).

There is no need to flash anything, just unlock it and add/edit the APN for TMo.

Sweet thanks! Both areas that I frequent have 4G and LTE coverage. My only concern is when I'm driving long distances which I often do, being in college and losing 2G signal in the middle of no where. So far with my Metro phones, I haven't seen anywhere I had 3G coverage. its always 2G and 4G/LTE

Good, that is exactly what we are seeing as well. Mostly LTE coverage with EDGE to fallback on. Most all Metro areas and major highways/interstates will have good coverage. Funny enough we live in the middle of nowhere, but there is a major highway nearby so we get LTE coverage.
On a side note, US carriers marketed HSPA as 3G and HSPA+ as 4g, but both are technically 3G. True 4G is LTE. I am not sure if Metro ever had HSPA service, I think that they were just CDMA then later added LTE and have been migrated to TMo's GSM/HSPA network which now uses Metro's LTE as well. Only the newer GSM Based phones would connect to HSPA.

Check your APN settings.

i cant even get to the apn's when i goto more network then mobile networks it says insert Sim card to access network services but calling an text work fine

4.3 rooted.. I got data now that I flashed a modem but its very slow datai don't know how to find the right 1..heres what the one I downloaded is called modem_CWM_I747UCUEMJB

Define Slow data please. Post Speed test results.

normally around 0.15mbs but sometimes it works great and I get around 15.00mbs

Given this is not an LTE device, that sounds about right. Weather, tower congestion do affect results.

The I747 is an LTE device, my wife's (running on TMo) works just fine on LTE, just not HSPA+ 1700MHz. I'll run speed test if people would like.

Unlocked att siii will not access metro/t-mobile data
Can someone verify for me what the correct apn settings are? Should there be a network operator? And since I think the apn is finally right, do you have any more suggestions? Also, do you know if this is CDMA or GSM?

can I ask why people want to buy an ATT phone to use on a Tmobile carrier? On the S4 and Note versions, people buy Tmobile phones and use them on ATT, myself included. This is because of the bootloader, and the Tmobile phones cover ATT LTE channels while not the opposite.

I didn't intentionally set out to buy an AT&T phone, I was just looking to upgrade and this was the best deal. Or at least it looked to be on the surface. Do I just need to forget it and try to sell it?

If you are in an area recently upgraded by T-Mobile, the I747 will work just fine. However, if you are in an are not upgraded with LTE, etc, it's waay more trouble than its worth. The above post about not getting HSPA+21/42 is worth considering too though.
T-Mobile and AT&T are both GSM networks btw.

I am actually on Metro P.S, but they are on the T-mobile network now in Atlanta, Ga where I live. We do run 4glte,but so far the fastest mine will connect to shows "E" on my phone, edge maybe? One of the many I've spoken with at metro said E is 3g. One of their repair techs said I needed a different SIM card because I had a CDMA phone but when I got to the store that had one he said it was a GSM phone. It's already about been more trouble than it is worth, but as much effort as I've put into it already, I'd like to resolve it.

LG G4 VS986 on T-Mobile LTE problem

Issue:
Phone will not stay locked on LTE in Global or LTE/UMTS/GSM mode. When in Global or LTE/UMTS/GSM mode and LTE does connect, it's momentarily and when trying to run a speed test or open a webpage, it quickly disconnects and connects to HSDPA. If switched to LTE/CDMA signal locks in great and data speeds are great however voice services are not available. Any thoughts or advice is welcomed. Thanks ahead of time!

What band LTE are you connecting to? I found that here on band 2, I will connect at first, but then it switches back to edge. Seems fine in a band 4 LTE area though.

I'm in the Raleigh NC area. According to LTE Discovery i'm using Band 4. and I also experience the same. A brief connection while in global or LTE/UMTS/GSM mode then it falls back to HSPA.

I haven't found LTE Discovery to report the band correctly, at least in my case. It would say I'm on band 4 on my Moto X, but when using a band 4 only device I would only get Edge, but when I go in a confirmed band 4 area it works fine. From what I've found, most 2G > LTE sites were converted to band 2 LTE. Although since you get HSPA the chances of it actually being on band 4 are higher.

I'm fairly certain this is a Band 4 area. The latest T-Mobile maps are pretty good about pointing out Band 2 areas. I've since sold the phone and acquired a iPhone 6 Plus which I'm looking to sell to replace it with an international G4 or T-Mobile G4. I was pretty impressed with that phone. If I had to rank my favorites, it's number 2. Nexus 5 is still king of the hill for me. There wasn't a better phone out when it was release for a better price.

Unfortunately I didn't. I sold it and bought one for T-Mobile...... Which I just sold about 3 hours ago.

So I tested it out again, and in a band 2 area when I boot up my phone with a T-Mobile SIM, I get LTE for several seconds then it cuts back over to 2G.
Now that there is a new software update for the G4, I wonder if this is anymore reliable. Anyone who took the OTA update in the past few days, can you let us know if it's any better?

Been there, done that...wanted to switch over to T-Mobile, but unfortunately, the VS986 only works with two of their three LTE bands, as you know, and it seems everywhere I went, they were using the one the phone doesn't receive (I'm in southern California, for what it's worth, but tested it on a freeway run up the I-5 to the central part of the state - only got 4G-LTE in a few places). Wound up going back to Verizon

I'm getting the exact same results in Burlington, VT (T-Mobile band 2 market). I first have to manually select T-Mobile (defaults to roaming on AT&T HSPA+) then LTE works for less than a minute (LTE Discovery says band 4) and then I lose signal when I get signal again, I only have edge. It does this constantly and is really annoying.

This whole plethora of LTE bands, where each provider does its own crap is such a mess, is just serves to lock in customers, since switching phones is expensive. Government should mandate that all phones can work on all US LTE bands, the technology exists.

I am on the same boat. Everything works on my VS986 on t-mobile network. but I cannot get the LTE to work properly. LTE discovery shows band 4 (not sure if correct though)

My VRZ LG G4 shows that it has Band 2, 4, 5, and 13. I tried enabling 2 & 4 only, 4 only, 2 only, 2&4&13 only but with no success.
What is interesting is I am coming from VRZ LG G3 and LTE was just fine and never had an issue.
I looked at the VRZ LG G3 LTE bands and I see Band 3,4, and 13 enabled. It did not even have band 2.

More testing:
When I switched the Network Mode to LTE/CDMA I get constant 4G-LTE & internet is working but my phone cannot place and receive phone calls.
with LTE/CDMA I see 4G at 100dBm and 1X at 120dBm

Interesting, almost sounds like a bug in the LTE/GSM mode.
I assume when you switch to global mode, voice works but only HSPA, right?

With HSPA/3G I get around 7 mbps download and 1.88 mbps upload

I think since someone reported before that this used to work the G3, it sounds like a bug to me. I guess we can hope and pray that this will work in future releases, but there is no guarantee of course. Not sure what complaining to Verizon will do, since they are probably not very interested in you using T-Mobile. Of course, you can always wrap the complaint into something like you are using the phone in a different country on vacation and it doesn't work. Maybe a complaint to the FTC could work too, since it sounds like Verizon is required to have their phones unlocked for use on other networks based on some settlement.

I am tempted to try the guide in here to add more LTE bands:

While some testers said the LTE bands are limited by hardware others reported some success modifying the software. Any thoughts?

Using this phone on AT&T, can't get 3g data

I cancelled service with verizon, and put my att sim card into this phone.
But the best data connect I can get is edge (2g). I don't expect this phone to get ATT's lte network, but is there a way to get 3g data connection? Edge is just too slow.
Also, is voice quality tied with network type? I feel the voice quality was worse in comparison to my ATT phone. But the signal shows full bars.

Edit: today it magically worked. I don't know what happened, as I didn't do anything to it. It is now running on HSPA+, with very nice speed.

Yes, after setting it up I was able to connect to EDGE. But that is only 2g speed. I read online that many people were able to connect to 3g (HSPA+).
Some of them mentioned reporting IMEI to ATT. Would this matter?

Try to call ATT and make sure they provision your SIM card with 4G LTE service. (you might need an IMEI that is compatible with ATT LTE for them to activate that option)

Switching Between H and LTE

When I got my Nexus 5 back in 2013 I noticed that if I was on LTE and made/received a call the data would switch to H and then switch back to LTE after the call was ended. My Nexus 5X does the same thing. What's the deal? Before I had the Nexus 5 I had a Galaxy SII Skyrocket(the LTE version of the Galaxy SII from AT&T) and that phone would stay on LTE during calls and that was from an early LTE phone (the first AT&T offered). I would expect the same from a current phone in 2015.

I am using Nexus 5X with T-Mobile and phone stays on LTE during call. There is a settings in: settings>more>cellular networks - Enhanced 4G LTE Mode ON/OFF switch. Do you have that?

Nope. I don't have that option. I'm on AT&T. That's really strange that you Nexus 5X has that and mine doesn't. Kind of strange that yours has software differences. Did you buy your phone directly from Google?

Phone is directly from google and this is the current build #MDB08L. If you have anyone with T-Mobile sim, try it.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*, then tap "phone info", scroll to the bottom and check for "VOLTE PROVISIONED FLAG" - if it is on, then you will see OFF in from of VOLTE...

It currently says "TURN OFF VOLTE PROVISIONED FLAG" so I'm guessing it's currently on. However I'm not sure what this has to do with anything. VoLTE means "voice over LTE". I'm not even trying to do voice over LTE. I'm just trying to use LTE for regular data while on a call over regular GSM.

That is exactly the case if you want to stay on LTE while on a call, then it is called VoLTE(Voice over LTE). Your setting for that seems to be on...
Things to try, unless Nexus 5X on AT&T is unable to do VoLTE, ask AT&T.
Test with T-Mobile sim
Check APN settings

Everything I've seen says that VoLTE means that the LTE data connection is used to actually make phone calls instead of the traditional cell voice network(GSM/CDMA). I don't care about that. I'm fine with regular phone calls using the regular GSM voice connection. I just want to be able to use the LTE connection for things like browsing while I'm on a regular phone call.
Good to know that it isn't an issue with the phone. I guess it might be an AT&T network issue but that would be strange since it worked with my old Galaxy S II Skyrocket that I bought in 2011. Maybe a compatibility issue between AT&T and this phone? I'll see if I can test with someones T-Mobile SIM. My SIM card is only a month old since I had to get a Nano SIM when switching from my Nexus 5(which took a Micro SIM).

The only way you will be able to use LTE to browse the internet while on a call is if you are placing the call using VoLTE. Before VoLTE (and currently if you don't have it) your phone will always drop to a non LTE connection.
I'm sorry but that's just the way it has been and the way it is. Every device that doesn't use VoLTE will change to a different non LTE signal to place the call.
AFAIK, VoLTE on our device does not seem to be supported on the "gsm" carriers.. Yet.

Maybe try out the Network app? It allows you to specify a network preference and do a bit of fine-tuning.

I am on Tmobile and sometimes it does the same thing. I have to switch network preference to 2G then make a call hang up switch back to 4G then turn on the VOLTE option.

This is the case with all devices that are not using the VoLTE service.
There is no other way, unless of course you are using a VoIP service or hangouts to place your calls.

I didn't realize VoLTE was a feature of phones in 2011. I'm wondering if maybe AT&T stopped supporting it on its network? Oh well, thanks for the info. I didn't realize a phone had to be able to make calls over LTE to be able to use LTE data while on a call. It's also surprising considering how Verizon does simultaneous voice and data. Once Verizon started supporting LTE phones(several years ago) you could do simultaneous voice and data but it wasn't(at least at that time) using LTE for voice calls. Just for data while a CDMA call was active. I guess it works differently for GSM?

In any case in order to stay on LTE and use data, your phone has to support VoLTE, because normal LTE is data only and when you make a call it would drop to 3 or 4G. CDMA and GSM are 2 different type of networks. I was always using GSM providers(T-Mobile in my case) and this is how it works. I don't know how your old phone could let you be on LTE during a call - unless AT&T was using some proprietary service.

Early on, phones had a separate 3G radio from their LTE radio. This is a big part of why the first LTE phones had substantial battery drain issues compared to 3G only phones at the same time. One of the nice things about the setup was that you could use 3G for voice and LTE for data simultaneously. With the move to integrated modems, which significantly improved battery life and speed, that feature was lost. Until AT&T implements a standard for VOLTE like T-Mobile has you're going to have to deal with the lower speeds while on a call.

OK that explains it. The Galaxy S2 Skyrocket was the first AT&T LTE phone so it probably had separate radios. I'm also kind of concerned with what VoLTE will do to battery life. I remember that one of the ways phone matters were reducing battery drain was to keep the radio asleep unless it was asleep. With VoLTE the LTE radio would have to be active all the time. Has the energy efficiency of newer LTE radios made that a non-issue? How is battery life on T-Mobile vs AT&T using the same phone under similar conditions?

LTE on T-Mobile not working AT&T working

So I got my pixel xl from Google today. It works but I am on T-Mobile and it will not connect to LTE band 4 or 12 which are in my area. I have an ATT SIM for my work which I popped in and it works fine. That said without driving around Atlanta to try to find B2 I cannot tell if it is T-Mobile or the phone. Is anyone else on T-Mobile getting LTE connection at all?
So news today I can connect to LTE. Yesterday when I got the SIM in using *#*#4636#*#* I would get zero reception forcing LTE only. The phone would only connect to UMTS/HSPAP. Today after several restarts and calling T-Mobile and Google support it is now working. Here is what I did.
First Google is saying the update is supposed to affect LTE connecting issues.
Second make sure your SIM is properly registered with your provider. They should elevate the issue to higher tech support to have them look into it. This takes up to 24 hours.
Third go to your dialer do the *#*4636#*#*, go to phone info and change the preferred network type to LTE/UMTS or LTE/WCDMA (I haven't seen a difference between them). (This info is in other threads) Then restart your phone.
The problem seems to be how the phone determines what bands the network provider uses. It defaults to CDMA as the voice connection. For me this meant the phone was always connecting to UMTS only. It seems the firmware has some kind of default setting when it senses an error out the gate. The APN settings and preferred network settings needed to be updated and the phone restarted for it all to work. I now connect to band 4 LTE in my area. I hope this helps others.

I am also getting slow data speeds on my pixel XL connected to t mobile

My XL seems to get pretty consistent LTE service and good speed on T-Mobile.

Weird. I'm getting pretty awesome Band 4 coverage in So. Cal. I also get Band 12 here, but Band 4 is what my phone tends to be connected to, which is fine since it tends to be significantly faster.

I'm in Oklahoma on t mobile getting slow connection compared to my friends. They each have a galaxy s6 edge and get between 70-80 MBs down sitting right next to me. I'm getting 14 MBs down. I just left sprint today for slow connection. Hoping to find a way to get this resolved ASAP.

I only experience the issue in downtown Toronto area and I contacted my carrier, Telus, in Canada. They confirmed that network signal in such area is mainly LTE band 4...

Just an FYI for those with the same issue. Google has asked for my shipping address after contacting them about the issue.

Have you tried swapping SIM cards?
I pulled the sim out of another working TMO iPhone6s and my PIXEL got LTE right away.

Thanks. I changed mine to LTE/WCDMA. Will know how it goes next week.

All seems to be working on my end.

I was having delays in mms being sent. I was using the default APN. About a week ago I changed the APN to the one recommended by T-Mobile. Mms sends instantly now just about. I don't think it's effected much on LTE but I didn't have problems before. Make sure your on the proper APN

I spoke with a t-mobile rep yesterday who helped me get my issue resolved. My main apn was set up incorrectly. Now I am connected to LTE and not just hspa+. I get generally good speeds most everywhere and I have tower right by my house that must go fairly unused.
