Galaxy Note 4- " this service requires a subscription" Error With Mobile Hotspot - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Foxfi quit working
Help!! Foxfi stopped working this evening on my Verizon Note 4 and my wife's S4. I am located in central Sussex County, Delaware. We are both on unlimited plans but with different accounts. 4 G signal is strong (-88db). I activate WiFi hotspot from PDA Net. It takes me to "settings", I toggle Mobile Hotspot from "off" to "on". It tells me that it is checking subscription status and after about 30 seconds I get the Error message that this service requires a subscription. I use quite a bit of data but my wife (on a different account) uses almost none. Anyone else having trouble all of a sudden? Any idea what may be going on? Help!! Thanks.

It's happened too all Verizon users, bud.

Verizon threw in a silent update last night. All of us unlimited data users got screwed. If you look at the reviews for the app, everyone from our carrier is having the same problem. I've been looking for another app to change to that will do that same thing. No luck so far. Sucks, since I've been using Foxfi for years and it always worked like a champ.
I say BOOOOOO to Verizon. =(

Problem with Data Connection

I replaced my galaxy s 2 because it was acting up and now i have rooted one and also put stock rom bloat free and i recently noticed that sometimes my phone have hard time connecting to data. i can see the uplink sign go green but the downlink arrow doesnt blink and phone keeps me waiting waiting and waiting and i have to restart the phone or leave it for good 5 or 10 minutes to be able to start working. can anyone please tell me if thats a hardware issue or the software? do i need to have my phone replaced?, i dont know if tmobile store would exchange phone now because i purchased phone on 12th and its been 12 days if the reffer me to customer service then they will send me a refurbished phone which i do not want because i paid full price for phone.
any help will be appreciated.
Data connection problem
If you haven't already tried, go to Settings/Wireless and network/Mobile networks/Access Point Names and if there is an option to reset, select it. I had a similar problem with data connections - up and down lights blinked but no connection - and T-mobile support helped me out. Also, make sure Use packet data and Data roaming are checked.

I've had the problem too, both on 4G and WiFi. There is a warning on the data roaming option about incurring extra charges. Is this true? I know that my plan says free domestic roaming, but I'm not sure that applies to data?
The T-mobile rep allowed that this was confusing. They stated that there are no additional charges within the US. Roaming is required because TM uses other providers' (i.e. Verizon) towers in some locations.
I have this same problem, Im wondering if the update coming out next month for wi-fi calling will address this, or what about using the new sim card??? Its pretty annoying but i didnt want to really exchange my phone b/c this is the only problem im having as well as the vertical lines which i have pretty much learned to live with.

i am using the new sim card already... i dont know if the problem is with new sim card or the phone itself but it gets annoying sometimes when i need internet and it doesnt wanna work.
Has anyone had any luck fixing this?
I noticed this problem sometime after rooting and flashing roms. Now I'm on the stock rom released in the dev channel. I've talked with customer servie for an hour and none of their solutions fixed anything for me.
I don't have a good backup - is there anything I can do?
I haven't been bitten by this again. It has been a couple days and I've since replaced my phone (today). But I haven't been on 4G much. Wifi has been working fine for the last couple days.

Wireless Tether (Sprint finds out?)

Basically how can Sprint find out if your wireless tethering for free. If you're rooted and using the free wireless tether app will going over a certain amount of data a day give them a alert. Thank you.

No Sprint will not be notified of going over a certain amount of data in a day, nor is there a cap for data usage when using the wireless tether app.
I just checked my 4G usage for this month since I started tethering on Sprint.com and it's at 17GB whereas before it was like 4-5GB. It's partially the tethering but it's also because I've been using the Watch ESPN app a lot this month. Is there any way that Sprint will kick me off? It's all Sprint data and not roaming since it's 4G. Obviously they can tell I'm using a ton of data but has anyone ever been kicked off for using too much data? How much data have other people used?

The only way that you are going to get kicked off for using too much data is if you are roaming when you use the data. And even then, more than half of your data usage would have to be while you are roaming. So, if your total monthly data usage is 4 gigs, and 2 1/2 of the gigs are used while roaming then you will most likely get a letter from sprint letting you know that they have terminated your account. This is commonly seen when a 00001 or other hacked PRL is loaded on your phone which causes you to constantly roam. But long answer short, you'll be fine...

Basically, when you tether you are sending your phones internet through wifi to your computer/device. Sprint only sees that you are using your internet on your phone, not where it is going. When you pay for the "tether service" from Sprint, there is a different way that you hook up to the internet. It is a separate service rather than just sharing your phone's internet connection with your computer/device.

Not exactly true. When you launch the unhacked Sprint Hotspot app it asks the Sprint Server if your phone is authorized to use the app. If you have not subscribed it errors out. The hacked app has the authorization check removed. When the hacked version launches it just shares the phone's internet connection with external devices. Sprint has no way of knowing that the internet traffic is going anywhere beyond the phone.
@ gharlane00,
Well put and agree'd!

Also not exactly true.
One thing they can see is the IPs of the pages you are going to, and different browsers make different page requests, like not pulling up the mobile versions of pages. (yes, I know this can be modified to pull up the nonmobile version.)
Not only is the tcp/ip page request header on an Android browser is completely different than say chrome/firefox/etc, but other applications use the same technique, like IM/BT/skype/etc.
If sprint really GAF, they could very easily see that you're tethering, from what I know.

Then, tether up, try it again, it will still show the same.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but Sprint doesn't know. What another user mentioned above is partially true, they can find out if you are excessively roaming. That will notify them, then they can investigate further and find which websites you're visiting etc. Then they will begin sending you letters.
my 2 cents. :good:
Yes Sprint can tell you tether
Ive been getting a text msg from Sprint, notifying me of doing something that isnt in my plan, they claimed I was "tethering" and setting up a "mobile hotspot" well I was sometimes, and btw I use xbox for LTE, so when they see alot of data being used like that, they will investigate, ive been with sprint for 10 years. That doesnt matter to them as they threatened to cut off my service, so I asked if they had any unlimited tethering/mobile hotspot and all they have is 6gb/month for $50 which is useless. so apparently they said I was going to Weather.com and NOAA website to much lol they couldnt even see that I had an Xbox One on LTE for past 2 months, and then you get an arab or some mexican that can barely speak english that doesnt know anything about phones/mobile development trying to tell you that you are tethering, the person I spoke with literally had to lookup the definition it was pathetic, sprint is going downhill as soon as I find another carrier with unlimited im flying to theyre store.

No Mobile Data

Hi, its my first post on the Z1C forum.
I just got one yesterday to replace my Nexus 5 and am accounting a few things I need help with since I am new to the xperia line of phones.
So my phone looks like this (for data) however I can't browse anything. I have mobile data enabled, national roaming and preferred network being 4G but nothing is working. With my Nexus 5 my data just worked so I am unsure why this is happening here. I can send texts and make calls just fine. Phone is on lolipop 5.0.2
The wifi signal in my room is terrible and its constantly dropping and when that happens I can't do anything with it.
I am on tesco mobile with a 2GB 4G plan.

Edit: So I looked around I went into mobile network and scanned, found tesco and registered. So I have 3G data now, but 4G isn't registering. Maybe I need to phone up Tesco and ask them.
Or maybe it's just not a 4G mast where you're connecting?
Is problem "no mobile data at all" or "no LTE connection" ?
Can you transfer data on 3G?
If so - check twice if your SIM card is LTE compatible.
I had to adjust the APN on my phone when I first got it as the one it autodetected wasnt correct. Try that out.
Hi so i just got a z1c and this happened to me. I could send and get text/calls even get notifications and updates. I called sony and t-mobile, nether could help me. Then i found a option under "more" in settings to update "Internet settings" find your server and hit ok. Try it out, i hope this helps.
In my case I needed to contact my carrier to enable 4G. Tried it?
Not sent by me.
settings.>>other>>>internet settings>>>download internet and mms settings...
this should do the trick...
Inconsistent Connection
I got my Z1C a few days ago and updated it to Lollipop yesterday. Ever since the update, the phone has been dropping data connection. I don't know what's the initial cause yet but as it stands, in order to get it working again I have to take out the SIM and reinsert it multiple times. I'm watching it carefully tho because it seems to happen whenever I start Candy Crush. Is there anybody else having this experience?

Anyone figure out how to do hotspot?

On the note 8 even with Verizon factory build we could turn off data, turn on hotspot, turn on data...and the mobile hotspot worked.
Tries it on the note 10 and it didn't seem to work.
Anyone figure out how to turn it on?
I have T-mo FW and hotspot/USB tethering is under settings/connections as usual, if it doesn't show up there, most likely Verizon took it out. One of many reasons I got rid of them and got T-mo.
After seeing your post it reminded me I not tested it out on my Note 10. I just tested with my Samsung UK Note 10 and options were in a similar place as the Note 9.
I went to Settings, Connections, Mobile Hotspot and Tethering, turned on Mobile Hotspot and then was able to join my Mobile Hotspot with my windows devices and browse the web.
I Just seen pete4k and he is right it could be Verizon removed it as an option in their firmware. Some still might prefer not allowing their customers that ability.
To be clear. I never actually signed up for Hotspot with verizon. The trick I laid out in my op was a way to turn it on without paying for it.
Interesting.....
when I turn it on in settings, it says "authentication error"....then it just turns on.
I think when I did the phone sync from my old phone it remembered those settings and is able to use them.
Problem solved.
Thanks for giving me the idea to try it.
cheers!
How petty if you're Telco limits the hotspot sharing in the firmware...
They are happy to sell the plan and hardware but want to tell you how to use it?
That's like the power company telling you what appliances are allowed to be used in your home...
Personally, I'd find another Telco unless the pros far outweigh the cons...

Hot spot mod

Was thinking of upgrading from my Note 9 and was looking to see if anyone has a work around for the Sprint model?
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I use PDANet+ Full with the WiFi Direct on my Note10+ on Sprint and go to school online and do all of my gaming with it. Use about 600GB a month of "mobile data". No issues here.
Easiest solution is to set TTL on your laptop to +1 above current. This works with verizon, may not work with all carriers. When I can't do that(tethering tablet) I use PDANet wifi direct.
Many moons ago here in xda was posed to pull Sim card , then go to Hotspot setting screen. Put Sim card back in and start turning on & off the wifi switch . This has worked for me since my note 5. Today with my note 10+ it still works. For me I toggle the Hotspot 3 times is the norm most is the time. I do not worry about the no Sim card message as the Hotspot toggle turns on. Just press the toggle back off. After the third time pops is please wait verifying, and it's on. I've got a screen recording of it but not had luck uploading with this.
