Anyone figure out how to do hotspot? - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

On the note 8 even with Verizon factory build we could turn off data, turn on hotspot, turn on data...and the mobile hotspot worked.
Tries it on the note 10 and it didn't seem to work.
Anyone figure out how to turn it on?

I have T-mo FW and hotspot/USB tethering is under settings/connections as usual, if it doesn't show up there, most likely Verizon took it out. One of many reasons I got rid of them and got T-mo.

After seeing your post it reminded me I not tested it out on my Note 10. I just tested with my Samsung UK Note 10 and options were in a similar place as the Note 9.
I went to Settings, Connections, Mobile Hotspot and Tethering, turned on Mobile Hotspot and then was able to join my Mobile Hotspot with my windows devices and browse the web.
I Just seen pete4k and he is right it could be Verizon removed it as an option in their firmware. Some still might prefer not allowing their customers that ability.

To be clear. I never actually signed up for Hotspot with verizon. The trick I laid out in my op was a way to turn it on without paying for it.

Interesting.....
when I turn it on in settings, it says "authentication error"....then it just turns on.
I think when I did the phone sync from my old phone it remembered those settings and is able to use them.
Problem solved.
Thanks for giving me the idea to try it.
cheers!

How petty if you're Telco limits the hotspot sharing in the firmware...
They are happy to sell the plan and hardware but want to tell you how to use it?
That's like the power company telling you what appliances are allowed to be used in your home...
Personally, I'd find another Telco unless the pros far outweigh the cons...

Internet connection

Hi guys,
its time to renew my mobile contract and I would like to have the HTC Desire.
But before getting it, I would like to ask a question.
At home, at university and at my friends home I have internet connection via Wifi, so I figered out I don't need a data option in my contract.
Now the T-Mobile guy told me I absolutely need one, because the cell phone connects with it to download updates.
In a youtube video I saw someone switching to wifi only at the welcome wizard after first power-on.
So, now my question: I'm really most of the time connected with wifi, do I really need data option????
I don't use social networks, so friends steam has no updates, same with the weather!!
Thanks for answers
Technically you don't need a data contract - you can switch off mobile internet and just rely on WiFi.
However, IMHO, if you're going to do that you're probably better off with a dumbphone and an iPod Touch, because you're really not using the phone as it was intended and you're going to get infinitely superior battery life.
Just an opinion - I appreciate that there are plenty of reasons why you might want the Desire regardless!
Regards,
Dave
Ok, thanks...
And yes, there are plenty of reasons.
Whats with vacation? E.g. when I go for two weeks out of my Wifi area?
Will it go online then or wait until I'm in Wifi again?
Btw: In my area there is only Edge available, so even if I wanted I can not use it as it was intended to!
Dennis
If you switch off mobile internet, it won't go online via the a cellular network.
If you want to be really, really, sure that it will never go online via cellular, you can delete the APN (i.e. you are worried you or someone else will turn on mobile internet accidentally).
Regards,
Dave
OK, that is a good idea.
I made that with my very old phone i bought 2003. There you had the option to set more than one APN profile. So i made up an empty one and made it the default one.
So I could switch to the real on in case I really need it.
Maybe you can tell my how to do this in android if you have time?
But thanks so far for your help.
Dennis
You can add the APN in the Phone settings. Not that different from WM
But I only use the Internet connection switch on my desktop.
I can simply switch it off and the phone will never connect to internet via GSM.
Unless someone messes with your phone and turns it on again it is a 100% guarantee that it will never connect via GSM.
I don't bother with APN anymore.

[Q] Portable Wi-Fi hotspot After OTA

So i am a little confused... I just got the latest OTA and now i have an option under settings-->Wireless & networks called Tethering & portable hotspot and from the looks of it i can use my phone as a wi-fi hotspot and i do not have root. So can we now use this feature with no additional cost to our plans? How does this fit into t-mobile releasing new wi-fi tethering plans starting at $15 a month.
I just got the update too. USB tethering works fine, and to my surprise, so does the hotspot. I say surprise because I have not added the $15.00 plan to my account. The only thing is there is no direct shortcut available so i used Anycut to make one.
not too sure but....
I am very new to these phones in general so I am not too savey from reading other posts it sounded like t-mobile was going to give that feature free at first for a little while until they get it all straightened out. I also read that they would not use the wifi calling as your mins but I see on mine (I just got teh update like in hours ago) that it says wifi calling uses plan mins... which is just fine for me cuz i never go near my mins... so i dnk if that helps but i think for now the tethering is free but they will charge it later... but dont quote me.

For them to start charging you they need to have a plan first. But even so, if they ask you to pay up I suggest canceling your current plan without an ETF and signing on for the non-contract plans. You'll save money, get a subsidized phone, and once we have root, you'll have wifi tethering again
I can't get the usb tethering to work. Windows can't find the android phone driver. I've installed the android sdk. Did you do anything special to get the driver?
When I try the hotspot, my computer can connect to the phone but the phone does not get an internet connection.

My goal is to USB tether my laptop.
I used pdanet successfully before the update just fine but now I have the update and want to try to use the built in usb tethering.
I manually installed the update to the G2 so I had tethering and the wifi hotspot. The wifi hotspot worked awesome with my laptop and I went to try the USB tethering to my desktop, but windows 7 couldnt find the correct driver to use. I hunted around the forums and google'd a few different things, but came up empty. I am wondering if anyone else has found the solution to this yet and could please share.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and my G2 is running 2.2 build 1.22.531.8
Thanks in advance
i saw the new settings as well but i dont think it will be free... tmo did release (or is going to release) a tethering plan for $15. I've been using wifi calling at home, i checked my usage and is coming under T-Mobile HotSpot--- im under a grandfathered plan
i guess if you are planning to use the hotspot i would be careful not to incur any data fees
FYI
I have just checked my bill... I have used Wifi Hotspot from my G2 and used just over 5GB of data. No charge. I have 4 days left of my bill cycle, will update when my bill comes out.
...one more thing, are all of you not able to use the wifi hotspot settings? I see a lot of people rooting their phones to be able to run a wifi hotspot. If so, why are only a few people able to do this, including myself.
If you need more information on my G2, let me know.
thanks.
When my desire Z had the stock rom it had no problems with wifi or usb tether, so it might be T-Mobile trying to sell their tethering plan with the g2.
True, although I checked with tmobile online and gave them a call and they said they are not charging me extra for me using my WiFi hotspot.

[Q] Carrier charges for Internet Sharing??

I am wondering if someone can explain the details around the carrier restrictions for WP7 Wifi tethering (ICS), specifically for at&t. For instance, will at&t be able to see that we are using ICS mobile hotspot feature and charge extra for it? Also, I realize that the XDA users, being the ingenious bunch that you are, were able to hack the feature onto several phones already.
If we didn't hack the feature, how would this all normally work through the carrier? Is the feature unavailable unless you have a tethering plan or does it show up anyway as part of WP7 regardless?
Thanks!
anyone??
This is just an approximation idea how it (can) work(s):
In registry there is option to select through which profile (and thus APN) it connects. So if your carrier would force different APN that is used for hotspot then yes, it is possible. But you just change in registry the APN name (or profile name) and voila, it flows now all through normal, phone, APN.
Plus there is the possibility to sneak the packets and check what sites are being checked (namely windowsupdate.microsoft.com lol).
I am so glad that I live where I live. 3GB FUP (actually 6GB FUP till end of January, we got double FUP as a gift) for $30/month. And it runs upto 880kB/s . (1,5GB file downloaded with avg of 780kB/s, peak 882kB/s).
thanks for the info! Yeah I have no idea why they charge extra for tethering, makes no sense, especially since most carriers got rid of unlimited plans! Anyway, I agree with you, should be able to change the APN to route everything normally.

Why? Because they are greedy bastards, that's why. Same internet, same data, same bits, could have used it as part of your normal data allowance but they charge you extra for it. Greed, pure and simple.
With the Focus, when tethering manually though the USB modem setting (google to find details) it goes through the WAP access point, and it shows up under phone data usage on my account (I have an unlimited data plan through my company). However, I tried using the ICS option and a few weeks later I got a text message from AT&T with the classic tethering data plan warning. I have since turned off ICS and have gone back to the USB modem method.
This is actually one of the reasons I don't want to upgrade to a 2nd gen device unless there is a known way to either use the USB modem feature or redirect the ICS through the WAP access point...

disableing wifi

how does one disable the wifi so that it only comes on when the user wants it on.
got 4.4 on my sprint note2. everytime i reboot, it automatically comes on.
and it comes on when i'm using the wifi tether router app. and shuts my tether off. getting really annoying with my downloads. and having to start over again.
You'll need to turn of the sprint connections optimizer ( its under mobile networks in settings) that will prevent wifi from coming on unless you want it.
Hope this helps

i'll give that a try. THANK YOU.
On another note.. Has anyone noticed how spot on connection optimizer has been since 4.4? No more cutting on and staying on all day. Now it actually shuts itself off when no Wi-Fi connection is made unlike before. I actually use it now and get better battery life since everywhere I go I usually have Wi-Fi, work included and when there's none it shuts off now. But I do see what op refers to, that's why I always uncheck it before tethering.

i'm a long haul trucker, i've been using my note2 as a gps tablet for the past 12 months. the phone is deactivated. i really see no need for wifi to be kicking on. what's the sense in turning it on when everything around is password protected.
really annoying to look at my screen and see wifi choices to connect to.
last week i had it activated, i've seen sprints plans to expand their coverage and hope it works out. i'm tired of shelling out twice the money for a cap on my services and crappy equipment with verizon.

Sprint connection only works when the device is activated to the sprint network so it shouldn't be kicking on if it's desactivated. At least that's the case with my phones.. I constantly swap between my phones and I've noticed whichever ones not activated the optimizer quits working on it even if it's checked on.

Galaxy Note 4- " this service requires a subscription" Error With Mobile Hotspot

Foxfi quit working
Help!! Foxfi stopped working this evening on my Verizon Note 4 and my wife's S4. I am located in central Sussex County, Delaware. We are both on unlimited plans but with different accounts. 4 G signal is strong (-88db). I activate WiFi hotspot from PDA Net. It takes me to "settings", I toggle Mobile Hotspot from "off" to "on". It tells me that it is checking subscription status and after about 30 seconds I get the Error message that this service requires a subscription. I use quite a bit of data but my wife (on a different account) uses almost none. Anyone else having trouble all of a sudden? Any idea what may be going on? Help!! Thanks.
It's happened too all Verizon users, bud.

Verizon threw in a silent update last night. All of us unlimited data users got screwed. If you look at the reviews for the app, everyone from our carrier is having the same problem. I've been looking for another app to change to that will do that same thing. No luck so far. Sucks, since I've been using Foxfi for years and it always worked like a champ.
I say BOOOOOO to Verizon. =(
