M8 vs new nexus 5 2015 - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using the M8 on Candy5 5.1.1 and switching to Cyanogenmod nightlies for a while now, I am curious if I should consider the new nexus (I've had the nexus 7 2013, own the nexus 4 and owned the nexus 5) and am wondering if it would be worth upgrading to considering the rumors are probably truth at this point with the hexacore, fingerprint scanner and usb C, but I am a flashaholic and the M8 has been one of the only devices I've owned that has a TON of support and working roms for Sprint. Is it worth it considering the new nexus over the m8? Assuming I can purchase the 32gb model, I am heavily considering it for rom support alone.

That is your choice. No one here should sway your opinion. Obviously the newer device will be "better"... But I imagine the improvements will seem miniscule.

I'm really looking forward to having a fingerprint scanner. I also miss wireless charging from when I had a Nexus 4, I know that this is slower but I just let the phone sit overnight so it's no big deal for me, plus it's awesome to just put the phone there without any effort. I've had my M8 for almost a year now, if the new Nexus 5 or even the Huawei Nexus are not that expensive I might migrate from HTC, but if those phones are flagship priced then forget it (that's the only reason I skipped the Nexus 6).

[Q] What phone next?

I love my GNex. Running Slim Bean 4.3 latest (highly recommended). Love the device, and it's still in minty condition. Love the totally open platform, timely updates and vibrant developer/user community. Have the T-mobile $30 pre paid plan and it's an excellent value that I want to stay with. Phone is soooooo smooth and pretty much has everything I want.........except LTE.
One of these days, I'll feel the need to upgrade the device for this feature alone. It might be in 6-12 months, certainly not tomorrow.
What's my best option for GNex + LTE in another device?
Nexus 4? Wait for Nexus 5? Galaxy S 3/4? Slim bean support would be a plus.
Google edition phones seem to fit into what you like. I jumped to a s4 from att and honestly can't be more pleased. But I'm sure in 6 to 12 months many things could tilt the smartphone balance. I would say go for the phone with the features you desire and then look into the development side. The S4 Dev is slow but also has solid mods Roms and kernels where many people would just be copying work or making it harder. Just a few things I thought about jumping from my nexus. But as you can tell a new phone did not keep me away. That allows me to play with android 4.3 and then have a quad core touch wiz device.

I have been using my GNex for over 1 year now and it has been a good fit for me. After looking at S4, it seem to be more powerful handset and camera is awesome.
However camera being not so good, is the only drawback I found in this phone. Hopefully the nexus 5 or whatever new device from Google should address this thing. May be u should wait for early next year when Google comes up with the new phone. It's only a speculation that they would be launching one next year.
Let's see what the new Nexus and Note III hold .
If I'd have to make the change today, and to be honest I thought of it, I'd stay away from:
- Samsung - poor build quality, too much plastic
- lack of microSD slots - microSD cards are VERY cheap compared to internal upgrades so that kinda puts on a side the Nexus program
On the other side, these seem like a good option:
- Motorola - pretty good build quality, the posibility of having a qwerty slider (but only with an unlocked bootloader) - Moto X, the future Droid 5
- Sony - openness, pretty good quality - Xperia Z, whatever takes its place
Just my two cents..
The HTC One is a beautiful device and very fast. The camera is quite OK on stock ROM (and with the camera software ported to vanilla Android), but it's a bit meh with the AOSP camera software.
I like the S4's specs and it looks quite OK, until I see its back; it's so darn glossy...
If it would be available in the Netherlands, I would go for the Moto X; it has such a bunch of nifty features on an almost vanilla Android. Combined with great battery life, it would be a fun daily driver.
So really, I'm waiting for the Nexus 5 as I think the Note 3 will have the same awful plasticy back as the other Samsung devices (thankfully the GNex doesn't). The Play Store Nexus 4 is a steal for the price over there these days too, but I'm in a country where it's not possible to buy hardware in there
Myself having a s4 my lady a s3 and sister in law s2 and lets not forget the nexus I dont see samsungs build quality low. Sd card was a big thing that bugged me about the nexus. Also something to consider. You can always wait for the next best device... but you will always be waiting because there will always be something better next. Get a device you want and use the hell out of it

Well, after the Nexus 4 price cut, it seems a pretty sure bet that there will be a new Nexus phone within a the time frame of a couple of months.
Considering the flak the Nexus 4 received for not having (accessible) LTE, as well as the new Google Play edition phones packing T-Mobile LTE, it would be surprising if the new Nexus phone didn't have it.
Considering you're on a T-Mobile plan without subsidized phones, the Nexus device should be an obvious competitor.

I think it's time for a new phone, suggestions?

I had the Galaxy Nexus since it came out. Great phone but I think it is time for an upgrade. I was really considering the Nexus 5, but is there anything else I should be looking at. I'm not looking to have the newest best phone out there, just something more reliable and stable then GNex. Are the Moto G phones any good? If my next replacement can be under $200 and still be a huge upgrade then that would be perfect. The Nexus 5 phones any good? Any other phones out there worth looking into?
Thanks
G3 is high end spec and you can get it for free at most carriers. Love mine worth knock on and the rear buttons once you try it you would want it in every phone. This phone will blow the nexus out of the water and compete with all the top models. S5 iPhone 6 not 4. For the size of the screen its the smallest profile out there

My wife uses MotoG for half a year now and I'm really positively suprised by the stability of this phone. She has rebooted it only a few times since she has it. Performance is also good for a daily driver. I think it's a good mid-budget phone.

I have a nexus 6 as my daily but I also have a second gen moto G on T-Mobile running Lollipop 5.0.1 and it does very well. No LTE but a great phone for the money.
I got a nexus 4 used for 150.
Try craigslist.
Moto G 2nd Gen or Nexus 4
tried the Nexus 4 that I gave to my brother which he had updated to lollipop, hell my Galaxy S5 with Lollipop is jealous of how buttery smooth it is! Better go with Nexus 4 or Moto G 2nd Gen for that Bang of the buck stock android experience!
Went to the nexus 5. Best phone for me atm with still a relative small screen.
I didn't know I missed the gnex curve though.

You might also consider a nice Samsung Note 3 Neo, but considers that there revolve around many communities. I have bought one months ago a friend of mine, and I must say I was very satisfied in terms of performance thanks to six cores. :good:

For my usage I find gnexus still good. If I have to change my phone the choices are low budget or higher budget. Low: moto g 2013/2014, redmi 1s (soon redmi 2s), honor 3c, rumors about new oppo anti xiaomi. High: One plus one, lg g2/g3, mi3/4, nexus 5, meizu mx4. In my opinion there is not so much difference between gnex and low budget smartphone in daily usage. You can try to perform a factory reset if you find your gnex slow and install a custom rom. Moto g 2013 takes worst photos than gnex (I don't know about 2014). 1s has problems with stock miui and kernel source has not been published (not good for developers).

Sorry, I forgot about this thread. I completely overlooked the Nexus 4. Seems a MUCH more powerful phone then Galaxy Nexus and the Moto for under $150. Since GNEX is getting me by on heavy day to day use, I think Nexus 4 will be more then sufficient. thanks everyone for the help!

What are you upgrading from and looking forward to on the 5x?

So as the Nexus 5 successor, I'm curious to see how many people are actually moving from the 2013 version to the 5x. And just for kicks, sound off what you're upgrading from and why.
I've held out with my LG Optimus G circa 2012 (stuck on Jelly Bean still, thanks Sprint!) so honestly I'm looking forward to
- timely and first-run updates
- Android Pay
- fingerprint security (no more lock screen)
- improved camera
- fast charging
- carrier freedom / project fi
I sold my N5 for the N5X. I also own a S6E and a Note 4.

I'm going to be upgrading from a Galaxy S3 that I got in July 2012. I'm still on jelly bean as well and really cannot wait for my 5X to get here.
From Moto X 2014 here. I intended to stay with N5 until another 5 inch nexus was released, but shattered the screen in March. Moto X 2014 pure edition ended up being the temporary replacement due to size of N6. I've actually really grown to like the Moto, but I miss being first in line for updates. If not for delayed updates I'd just stick with the X for another year, which is still a possibility if the N5X fails to impress me.
I'm coming from the N6. My wife's GS4 kept losing wifi signal, couldn't cast anything, and just was a pain in the @$$. So, she's getting the N6 and I'm getting the N5x.
T-Mobile Band 12 support/VoLTE/WiFi Calling (though two of those are still slightly up in the air), and I'm curious about how good the camera will be even though I'm not a huge photographer. Other than that, I guess just bored with my Nexus 5. I'm firmly in the "N5X isn't much of an upgrade" camp.
Although most wouldn't consider it an upgrade, I am pretty sure I am getting rid of the Droid Turbo for the Nexus 5x. My biggest reasoning behind it is that I am on Verizon and I loved my old galaxy Nexus back in the day. I know the phone specs itself is probably a downgrade, but I love the freedom of Nexus devices the most. Being able to rom if I want, getting official updates quicker if wanted (or switching between the two), slightly thinner/lighter phone, support, not bound by verizon...overall, I just love the Nexus line and I can't do a 6" phone (including framework).

I'm upgrading from my broken Galaxy Nexus running stock rooted 4.3. I had hopped on the Kit Kat bandwagon when it was first released, installing some roms, but I found it too buggy for my tastes, and went back to stock 4.3. I'm very excited to skip Lollipop and upgrade directly to Marshmallow and get ride of my lagging mess of a phone!
I'm coming from a Nexus 5 and looking forward to not having a cracked screen
Coming from 2013 Moto X DE. Been a great phone but the battery is about shot, and its pretty much done getting updates. I'm on Verizon (really the only carrier in my area) and I will only buy phones that I can unlock the bootloader, which unfortunately means I'm pretty limited in my selection lol.
Nexus 6 and 6p seem way to big for me, so I think the 5x will fit the bill nicely.

I'm coming from the Galaxy S Relay. The last of its kind in QWERTY sliders, but I knew I would have to give up the keyboard sooner or later. Looking forward to having my T-Mobile wifi calling working in AOSP and everything in general will be a huge upgrade. Also I think the fingerprint scanner will be pretty cool and I'll actually lock my phone now.

blackberry is making an android phone with a slide out keyboard if you still want one
Coming from G4 presently. This year I've been using N5, N6 (sold), GS6 (sold). I'm really looking forward to the the 5X, it seems like the perfect phone in every way for me
Coming from the n6. Looking forward to having a phone that will fit in my pocket. Had the OG n5 and really liked the build. Fingerprint scanner and super duper fast charge (or whatever it's called) are big positives
Wife's HTC One M8 with a shaky (at best) usb port, and daughter's HTC One M7 with cracked screen....lucky them I guess.
Pre ordered 5x as soon as page went live. I'm coming from htc one m8 and m7 before that. Looking forward to quick updates
I had a Moto X 2014 Pure, but bought a n5 because Moto X is not that great. Motorola has been crappy as of late too. I gave the Moto X to my bro as he doesn't care as much about updates or phones in general like I do

I believed that before, but that's false. After 5.0, they disappeared. I got 5.1 awhile after 5.1.1 was on Nexus devices. The stagefright patch was after Samsung's one. That's saying something
If Motorola claims it gets fast updates, they should say in the fine print "initially"

I have an HTC One M8 right now, running DigitalHigh's GPE ROM. I had a GNex before that, and was waiting on the Nexus 6. When I saw it was gonna be expensive and huge I went HTC. I really hate Sense, so the GPE ROM was a necessity. Had some issues, but mostly it's been good. I'm excited to go back to pure Android without having to screw with it (even though I'll still screw with it).

Upgrade to OP3 now or wait for the next nexus?

Im in sort of a mid life crisis. I currently own a Nexus 6 but I want a more beefy phone. The N6 is great and all but its starting to lag, battery is degrading, and the front camera sucks. I really like the nexus line and I have never owned a OP device. From the rumors im seeing the next nexus should be pretty damn good, so to all of you who own the OP3, are you happy with the purchase? Would you recommend buying it or should I just wait? Thanks!
I just got the OP3 and I was in the same dilemma as you. I like the nexus phones as the are pure android and will always get the security updates asap. But for me the current 6P is too big of a phone and has already been out for what, 9 months? You have to figure that going on past performance, the next generation Nexus phone won't be announced until Sept and will not be available until Oct. I didn't want to wait 4 months. Plus, the price is almost certainly going to be a lot more that $399. Having had the OP3 for a week, I know I made the right decision.
No mistake about it, if you buy the OnePlus 3 then you will be buying a premium phone. From the build to the cases, it's top notch.
Don't think that the lower price means a compromise. It's sleek, powerful and most importantly the OS is stable and well supported by the company. No bloatware..
When Nexus comes out you will be waiting for next Galaxy

I love Nexus but...
OnePlus really has done it with the OP3. It really could be the best damn phone ever! Build, OS and dev support is up there with Nexus and I honestly would say I like the OP3 way better than my wife's S7. Honestly. I love it. I have owned Samsung's, nexus and OPO, OP2 and now OP3 and this is by far the best of them all. And the cherry on top for me is OFFICIAL Slimrom support on the way.
Oh, and dash charge.. how the hell did I ever live with out it???
well I sold my 6p for this baby then will probably get the next nexus or whatever google throws at us. depending if it's worth it tho

Will you upgrade from Nexus 5X to Nexus Sailfish 2016?

The 2016 Nexus to come after the Nexus 5X is the Sailfish, it will be made by HTC, will have a 5 inch 1080p display, 4 GB of RAM, and possible the SnapDragon 820 or 821. The Nexus Sailfish is claimed to be coming with a 13-megapixel rear snapper and an 8-megapixel front camera.it sounds like there will only be a 32GB model for the Sailfish.
So will you upgrade or will you keep the 5X or will you go elsewhere for your 2016 phone?
First thing is price for me..next is battery

HTC Nexus 5X don't think it will be cheap...
depends on price compared to other OEM manufacturers.
if its same price as OnePlus 3 then theres no point getting HTC Nexus 5X.
oneplus 3 you get 64Gb internal storage (UFS2.0 storage) with flagship spec's
how much will HTC Nexus 5X 64Gb cost?
Maybe next year...

Got 5X few days ago so no.
Maybe if it has a compass that works all the time and not just sometimes I will!
I got the Nexus 5X at launch, and I plan to do the same with Sailfish. I really like the 5X, but I'm in the habit of upgrading every year.
No. The absence of front facing speakers kills it for me.
i got my 5x with the project fi enrollment deal making it 199. the price tag is the only reason i bought it, so probably not. i still catch myself wanting to repair the screen on my six and taking it out and about every once in a while.
Should've made this thread a poll.
I, for one, will be jumping ship as soon as the phones are released and there are some legit reviews that highlight their strengths and weaknesses. I still owe around $200 on my N5X but I'll pay that off and get either Marlin or Sailfish. Haven't decided which one, yet.
If the specs turn out to be true then yes. And I would like it to be called the Nexus 5P if it does as it would only be appropriate.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I'll get one of each (Marlin and sail), keep the one I like best, then offer the other to the wife. If she isn't interested then return it. I love this time of year every year!
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA-Developers mobile app
Unlike last year, I won't jump on the preorder. I might if the phone is attractive and has good battery life.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Nope. I cant buy a new device every few months. And besides, IDGAF if it has triple better specs, the 5x is smooth and customizable and has a good battery life if tweaked correctly. Buying a new nexus just for a few miliseconds of speediness or an hour extra of battery life is a waste of money IMHO.
Depends on physical size of Sailfish. I'm still using original MotoX 1053 with KK. Easily fits in pocket. Battery starting to exhaust earlier and earlier, so about time for replacement. Would love to have same phone with wireless charging and upgraded chips and software.
What does this mean? I don't understand this article.
http://motoringcrunch.com/news/2016-google-nexus-sailfish-marlin-wont-get-rooters-support/32008994/
We know that Google will be releasing two Nexus smartphones this year and that both these models will be made by HTC. Based on the details we have now, the Nexus Sailfish and Marlin are turning out to be a really tough contender. However, no matter how amazing it is going to be, the rooters will still not support the new Nexus devices.
The Nexus devices have always been a rooters go-to smartphone mainly because it comes running on the stock android and it is usually the first to get all the software updates from Google.
However, with the new safety system in place, the new Nexus Sailfish and Marlin will be useless to the rooters. According to Google, their new Android 7.0 Nougat will come with a new safety feature that will stop the device from booting up if it detects that it is being corrupted.
They also added that the system will only be available if the device comes with a locked bootloader so it is still possible for rooters to root the new Nougat OS, they just can’t do it with the Nexus
depending on the price.........
4GB RAM is so tempting to pass
