Easy step by step instructions for those of you who don't know how to Odin flash firmware:
Download the Stock Firmware you need.
Unzip the firmware into an empty folder on your desktop
Download Odin 3.10.7
Unzip Odin into the same folder containing the firmware
Go into settings>about & keep tapping the "build number" until it tells you that you have Developers options
Go back to Settings>Developers options and make sure that "OEM unlock" has a check mark next to it
In Settings>Developers options be sure to enable "USB Debugging"
(Optional) Go to Settings>Backup and reset - then click on Factory data reset (This will wipe internal sdcard)
Power down the phone using the power button
Unplug the USB cable
Open the folder you created and open Odin (its a window application)
Select the "AP" slot in Odin and then navigate and select the firmware TAR file
Put the phone into Download Mode by pressing Power/VolumeDown/Home keys at the same time
When the phone is going into download mode and asks if you want to continue press volume up
Connect USB cable from the computer to the phone and be sure the the "COM:X" lights up in Odin
Once you do all the above successfully click START in Odin
Please Note: Odin flashing firmware does NOT format/wipe your internal sdcard.
=================================================================
Here is a little trick I just learned which might interest many of you:
If anyone has a problem going directly from "download mode" into "recovery mode" then here
is a way you can do it. I have never seen any posts about this procedure before but it works!
Press both of the volume keys, home key and the power button for about 15 seconds more or less
then as soon as the screen goes black let go of the volume down key and the phone will go directly
into recovery mode where you can power off the phone for a fresh power on or power down.
Give it a try a couple times, you have to be careful to look at the 4 buttons making sure that your
fingers are actually on all 4 buttons before pressing them at the same time, letting go of only the
volume down button as soon as you see the black screen, then the phone goes into recovery mode..
.

Odin flashing official samsung firmware does not trip knox.
Flashing kernels and recoveries will trip knox.
After rooting your phone you will not get OTA updates.

Thank you very much!!
So if I flash twrp knox will trip??
Edit: Yep trips, and thank you. I got stuck in a boot loop with Twrp and Arter. I had to sideload the kernel. Thank you for this easy post with all the files in one place!!!

[Q] Can't get Recovery/Root. Need help please.

I NOW HAVE ROOT AND RECOVERY!
Thanks to mariostar32 and krankdroid!
Hi all,
I've just bought a Note II and am trying to get root. I've followed this tutorial carefully
HTML:
http://galaxynote2root.com/galaxy-note-2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-2-on-linuxubuntu/
and everything completes without error, but whenever I try and boot into recovery it just get a garbled Samsung boot logo and it never gets to recovery.
Now I can't go back to stock updates since my device has been modified, so I'm commited to getting root and custom recovery now.
Can anyone help me with what is going wrong?
Thanks
download the last version 4.1.2 and flash it via odin. If you need any help tell me.

I can no longer download updates from Samsung since I have tried to root it already.
I can't use Odin since I don't have Windows.
I have tried the method in the link above using Heimdall (Odin equiv. for Linux) and everything went fine (no errors, terminal output was as expected) but cannot get into any recovery (stock or custom)
Before you proceed with tutorial, make sure:
You have installed your Galaxy Note 2 N7100 USB drivers on your PC.
You need to enable USB debugging mode which is deactivated by default.
You smartphone should have 70-80% charge remaining.
Your Galaxy Note 2 N7100 should be factory unlocked.
Backup your important data like Call logs, SMS and other data in stored in phone memory so in case if anything goes wrong, your data is not hurt.
The update is only meant for Galaxy Note 2 N7100, so don’t try it on other variants.
Step 1) Download Android 4.1.2 XXDLK7 for Galaxy Note 2 N7100. " I can't post outside links so type in google galaxy note 2 xxdlk7 "
Step 2) Download ODIN v3.07. It's an old version but you can download a newer version of odin from google but it works np
Step 3) Turn OFF your mobile and go to Download Mode by pressing and holding the Volume Down + Home Buttons together for few seconds followed by Power button until you see Android logo with triangle on screen.
Step 4) Now open ODIN on your PC and connect your Galaxy Note 2 N7100 to your computer.
Step 5) Once your phone is successfully connected to your PC, the ID:COM box on ODIN will turn yellow and will show the COM port number.
Step 6) Select the downloaded file to install by following below steps:
Click on PDA and select file with HOME or CODE in its name.
Now click on Phone and select file with MODEM in its name.
Next click on CSC and select file with CSC in its name.
At last click on PIT and select file with .pit.
Step 7) Again to to ODIN window and check Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options.
Step 8) Click on Start button in ODIN window to start the installation process. The process will take few minutes to complete.
Step 9) When the installation is completed, your phone will restart. I hope that i helped you GoodLuck

I can't use Odin, there is no Linux version.
I've found the TWRP for the Note II:
HTML:
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/115
Does anyone know if I flash the latest .img file from that using Heimdall will that give me a recovery to then install Super-SU from?
I've only just bought this phone and can't afford to buy another if I brick it, so I'm hesitant to just try without some expert knowledge.
you must be rooted first before putting twrp.

Ok, so how can I root it?
The only Linux tutorial I've found doesn't work since I can't get a working recovery in order to install Super-SU and get root.
Is there another way to get root? Or another method that might give me a recovery so I can get root?
Ok after you did the tutorial you got rooted or not ? download root check from play store and check

No I do not have root. I wish to get root access and install a recovery, then Super-SU.
Try this, It's a root way without odin.

You can get the mobile Odin that let's you flash firmware from the device itself.

Great! I'll get that to install TWRP or CWM then, since Heimdall seems to be corrupting the recovery when flashing it.
I've got root now (thanks to mario above!) so mobile odin is a good option
Thanks!
It's nice to see that you get rooted, nw download mobile odin and flash twrp.img

Update:
For Android Marshmallow you could use Chainfire's CF Root. For SM-G928C visit https://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ or download it from here
Also you could check Dr. Ketan's Root and Deep sleep fix guide: here
Update 27th March 2016:
Seems like the some of the root methods out there is hit and miss like CF Auto Root etc. But seems like lot of people reported rooting with SkyHigh Kernel seems to working.

nice write up. you might want to note that after the recovery is flashed. do not reboot the device system. i did it twice on accident and both times, because after the flash, it stays in download mode. the system re-installed the stock recovery. so what i did was hold: vol down, home and power to reboot back into download mode then from there i hit vol up to cancel. then as soon as the phone is about to reboot, i did the: vol up + home + power button combo to boot into the new recovery. *my phone didn't let me boot into recovery from download mode.

I don't believe so. So far the research I did S6 Edge could use a app to root but that doesn't support Android 5.1.1 version. Until they support 5.1.1 we have to use this method.

i can confirm that the steps are the same for the s6 edge, the kernel and required files are different. Just search and you will find it. I know this because i previously had the s6 edge (international) on 5.1.1
So this question sounds kinda dumb for me...
With this method I can root my SM-G928F right?
Does it wipe my phone?
Sorry for those questions but it's my first Samsung Phone.

hi guys,
has anyone successfully rooted 5.1.1 with this method?
I'm using e500h, followed all the steps and stucked at Samsung logo after installing supersu.zip.
what I did...
1. Upgraded to 5.1.1 via odin using India firmware.
2. Flashed twrp, no problem found.
3. Flashed the latest stable supersu, stucked at Samsung logo.
4. Flashed the lastest beta supersu, same problem.
Even if I installed supersu via Play, it said the phone must be rooted manually first.
Now I'm back to kitkat

4. Flashed the lastest beta supersu, same problem.
Even if I installed supersu via Play, it said the phone must be rooted manually first.
Now I'm back to kitkat
Any idea guys?

I too had that problem. I flashed 5.x and 4.4.2 back and forth few times, wiped/formated everything and factory reset (while you have 5.x and TWRP) including hard reset. For some reason, it went ok and I'm able to use Kitkat again.
I think it may not be the proper way to do it. I just tried every possible thing that I can think of.
I also tried Kingroot, not working. Bummer!
Someone please email chainfire the boot.img or kernel.img he may listen to us and update cf-auto-root ?

Its not recovery fault its SAMSUNG. normal root flash will not work on stock anyhow and even chainfire knows it. this is the same issue were S6 Edge suffered too. its security which checks any modification in system partition on boot and if found it wont allow system to boot thus causing bootloop and at no way recovery is at fault!
New build is UP!
KINDLY DO NOT FLASH SUPERSU IT WILL BOOTLOOP DEVICE!
More info please.

Hi,
I dont think so SuperSU will work on 5.1.1 but many have said that Kingroot works so you can try that but CM is pre-rooted so anyway its possible

I'm using e500h, followed all the steps and stucked at Samsung logo after installing supersu.zip.

4. Flashed the lastest beta supersu, same problem.

Update: The Xposed_v2.6.1_by_SolarWarez_20151129.apk variant works with this release! Search for it on Google if the stock versions wouldn't run on your phone!

Use the old Xposed Installer v2.6.1 with TW 4.4.4, and you can directly install the xposed framework within the app.
Just a heads-up for anyone having trouble flashing any of these. I tried several times and re-downloaded the modem and the full firmware. They failed multiple times in multiple versions of odin(for me). I gave up on the modem but kept working on the full and it finally took but I was stuck at t-mo boot screen more than once and it wouldn't fully boot. Finally I flashed the newest twrp before taking any other measures and it finally booted.

In case it gets stuck at T-Mobile boot screen after successful firmware flash, just hold the power button till your device turns off,
Then go into stock recovery by using power+home+volume up button and do a factory reset.
It should boot fine.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to list that I did that also. For me at least this S4 was very stubborn to take on this flash. I was mostly posting so if anyone else ran into this so they wouldn't panic. All is well now though. It came around eventually.:good:
I searched this out because I'm looking for a Stagefright fix for the S4 (my wife's phone). It looks like the other ROMs were last updated prior to Stagefright, so I expect they are not fixed. However, I'm OK with stock as long as it is rooted.
Are there any issues with rooting? I read in this article that T-Mobile put a SetUID restriction on the kernel and the normal process for TWRP and SuperSU doesn't work.
The author was writing about the UVUAMDL firmware, and offers a link to download a patched MDL kernel with the restriction removed.
Since this thread is about the UVUFOK3 (a later version), it seems likely that the SetUID restriction still exists. However the article also says "MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON UVUAMDL build OTHERWISE THIS KERNEL WILL BREAK THINGS IN YOUR PHONE!" So does that mean "UVUAMDL only - nothing newer or later" or "UVUAMDL or later"? No way to know since the article has not been updated since UVUAMDL.
Has any one successfully rooted the S4 after installing this firmware? (M919UVUFOK3_M919TMBFOK3_TMB)
Is the kernel provided in M919UVUFOK3_Stock_Kernel.zip already "fixed" to remove the root restriction?

Nothing is modified as it is a stock package, stock kernel is only required if you flash some custom kernel and wanted to go back to stock by just installing the kernel instead of full ODIN.
This is what I always use to root:
1) Install latest TWRP via ODIN
2) Boot into recovery
3) Flash latest SuperSU zip using TWRP.

So it should be a fairly straightforward process? The issues technut experienced are unusual? Has anyone else installed and rooted using this ROM? Please report on how it went.

a103, when you say "flashed a custom ROM", do you mean a different ROM than the one in the OP of this thread? (since this one isn't really custom) If a different ROM, which did you flash? I didn't find many options that contained the OK3 firmware.

The phone currently is running Wicked V8 custom ROM, so I think I need to flash everything. What are the steps for updating all three; firmware, kernel, and modem? Is there a particular order to flash them in Odin?
I read in another place that the firmware contains the Modem so I wouldn't need to flash the modem in addition to the full firmware (M919UVUFOK3_M919TMBFOK3_TMB.zip). Is that true in this case? Does it include both modem and kernel?
Edit - After searching out how to open tar.md5 files I can now see that the full firmware does include the kernel and modem files. So installing that one should sufficient to update everything.

a103, did you have any of the problems reported by technut above? Was it a smooth process of flashing?
Here's what I think has been said:
0) Before starting - copy UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip, Titanium Backup APK, and Titanium Backup data onto ExtSD card.
1) start phone into download mode, Use ODIN to flash M919UVUFOK3_M919TMBFOK3_M919UVUFOK3_HOME.tar.md5
2) restart into stock, let it stabilize.
If any problems or stuck on Tmo screen, restart into stock recovery and do factory reset
3) once booted into stock FW, power off.
4) restart into download mode, use Odin to flash openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-jfltetmo.tar
5) boot into TWRP
6) install UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
7) reboot into Android - phone is now rooted again and ready to go.
8) restore user apps (not system apps or data) from TiBu, restore TiBu XML data for SMS and call logs, etc.

@Tegra56
You may have to provide some more information about your device before we can start to identify the problem:
1. Have you checked the md5sum on the ROM you are using? (To make sure you did not get a bad download)
2. Is you device rooted?
3. What is your Bootloader/Modem Version #? [Settings-About Phone-Baseband Version: ( I747UCUFNJ2- this is the latest)]
4. Have you installed a custom recovery?(TWRP; CWM; Phil's Touch)
If you can provide this information I will try to assist with the problem.
edit: If you can't get into your settings follow @audit13 instructions in Post#2 and we will proceed from there.

1 Firmware has been checked md5
2 firmware has rights root
3 This I can not say. as the phone will not turn on, it was i747
4 Was installed TWRP
Did you install cm13 for the d2att? Sounds like the incorrect ROM may have been flashed to the phone.

Did you make a backup (with TWRP) of the ROM you used before flashing cm13 ? fingers-crossed
If you did, try restoring this backup first.

Ok, Here is where the fun begins!!... First we must know what your bootloader/modem # is right now. This is very Important.
Based on the information you have provided thus far, it seems to me that your firmware was out of date when you flashed the custom ROM. My suggestion to you, would be to do a clean install (Wipe) of this ROM: http://d-h.st/sV2 You can Read More about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2390147 It's a Custom KitKat ROM, just so you can boot into something, the recommended gapps for this ROM have been discontinued, but you can try "Open Gapps" Choose the 4.4 -Nano Package: http://opengapps.org/
If you were running KitKat 4.4.2 chances are, you might be updated to at least I747UCUEMJB in which case they are 3 incremental firmware updates left for your device. However updating firmware should only be done using Odin so we must try the above alternative first and then work on getting Odin to work with your device. Good Luck.
edit: I just noticed you said the phone won't turn on!!....
If you have TWRP installed then you will have to hold down the "Volume up" , "Power" and "Home" buttons, release the power button(Keep holding the other two) once you feel the device vibrate, when you see the android logo you may release the other two, TWRP recovery should boot.
