D855 rear buttons issue - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Planning to buy a G3! The version is D855, the seller is reporting that the rear buttons sometimes work and sometimes dont and is saying it is a software issue and not related to hardware. Has anyone heard of this before?

This might make it easier. Copy paste, copy paste lol
Another thing worth mentioning is that the phone is in safe mode just like the one in this thread. Hopefully someone here knows what that's about.

Marshmallow update caused bootloop

Hi all,
Just got news of the marshmallow being available to my LG G4 (H815). I was aware of the update having been rolled out to Poland and Korea before so I thought it was a safe bet.
I plugged in my phone, started the LG Bridge software which prompted me with the update. I went on and downloaded it, which happened without any issues.
However, when the process was over and my phone restarted, it went through the usual "app optimization" window and after that started boot-looping. I have the initial audio cue from LG playing every few minutes, with the same "app optimization" for 12 apps (when the first time it was around 90).
I initially left it for a while (5-10min) before i started losing patience. I removed the battery but that didn't change anything.
I initiated the Recovery mode, but it prompted me with a "factory reset" question, which I didn't feel like doing before having tried anything else.
My phone is not rooted and was running Android 5.1, the LG variant. I never fiddled with this phone.
Has anyone else experienced issues updating? Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to recover my data? Because for me, that's mostly what I'm concerned of.
Thanks!
Edit: In addition, I'm facing a new problem... while boot-looping, my phone is actually draining more energy from the battery than my charger can provide (yet, it's a 1,8A @ 5V).
It's now down to 10%, which I've been able to verify by removing the battery thus shutting down the phone, putting the battery back inside, and plugging the phone in while being off. However, this automatically turns on the phone, so it briefly displays the battery charging animation before booting... My phone was at 100% during the Marshmallow update.
Which S/N (serial number on your box) do you have? 505 and 506 are known for this issues..

yes it can be a issue of the 505.. Not to scare you or anybody else (there are people here that are crying and closing threads because i talk things like this.) But 505 is a known issue that some of the motherboards have defects. I hope you can fix it for yourself or call the cheap manufacturer LG..

Are you aware of this being a reason for replacement units to be issued? I didn't buy it through LG directly but through amazon, so I'll get in touch with them, but just wanted to know if you've had any experience or know of anything regarding this. And thanks for letting me know.

Np chief. They will fix your phone, just say it is in a bootloop after LG's official update. Call Amazon or LG itself to fixe this problem. (you mentioned you didnt root anything etc so you are good to go boss).

I figured, they would just try to restore my device and send it back to me, so I tried it and it worked. I'm still disapointed for two reasons:
- I still lost valuable data which I can't retrieve any more
- I'm still stuck with my device which could very well be prone to other issues in the future (any future update ?)
There are issues with this phone because i had 3 Rma's because of motherboard and dead pixels. My wife has also dead pixel and has version 506. Just use your phone, Marshmallow update is out so maybe they changed something in the system to stabilize the motherboard.

Crackling Speakers -- Manufacturer Defect or Software Bug?

The phone speakers make a crackling popping noise periodically... i cant figure out what exactly triggers it and i dont think its necesarily just at high volume. The one way i know how to reproduce this every time is to run antutu benchmark and try to turn the volume all the way down and all the way up while the first video benchmark (i think its called maroon) is running. the speakers will crackle through several of the adjustements.
Anyone else experiencing this? Do you think this is a software issue or a factory defect? I could listen to music for a halfhour straight and not have an issue as long as im not doing anything else with the device which makes me think its more of a software issue when volume is being adjusted or other operation where the volume is being toggled (i.e it has also happened while receiving a notification where the first milliseconds of the notification alert will play and then it will "crackle-out")
I did a complete factory reset and booted total stock and still had the issue so its not root or any modification related.
Hey, i have the same problem! Did you contact the support?

I contacted support and the tech said they didn't get any other reports of this happening and said it might be a hardware issue but then they forwarded me to Verizon to get a replacement phone... then Verizon told me it's not a hardware problem it's a software problem so I can't get a replacement. I am convinced that it is a software problem because of the symptoms of otherwise normally working speakers but at the same time I am very surprised that there aren't tons of other people bringing this up. I am also not sure where to report this bug to google

Actually I have heard of this... Its in the forums somewhere...
Tell VZW to STFU and send you a new one.
I've been experiencing a similar issue. Pixel XL 128GB.
I notice sporadic stuttering in the video and audio whenever playing videos, either through YouTube or Chrome. I don't really notice it anywhere else, which leads me to believe it's a software issue. Potentially a bug in the video decoders. I haven't contacted Google support yet.
I had the same exact problem with my Verizon one, it happened twice in a week of owning it, it bothered me so I ended up returning it, back to my s7e!
---------- Post added at 04:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:35 PM ----------
When it first started happening to me I couldn't find any others talking about the issue so I thought I was alone lol
My 32gb XL has been doing it too. I generally use bluetooth headphones, so it's not a big deal, but it is certainly something I've noticed when trying to use the in-phone speaker.

Thanks guys, so I contacted Verizon and they had the nerve to tell me that they would replace it but only with a "like new" device. What a joke. So basically they told me well **** you and that sucks that we sent you a broken phone so here's somebody else's old broken one. such a slap to the face.
I didn't have the time to sit an argue so I will have to either call back another time or go to a store
I'm contacting support about this now. I only notice it when I'm using my Daydream View headset though. But does anyone know if it's safe to perform a factory data reset if I'm rooted with custom kernel?

I contacted Google. They want me to send my phone back and after they got it they will send me a replacement...

You can send you phone back to the Google store if you speak to the right person. But you will have to send it then they will send you another. But beware they are already sending used phones as replacements just as Verizon is. Many have returned their device for many different reasons. This is a nice phone and we all like Google but this phone has the worst customer service I've ever seen displayed versus a nexus. Google will actually argue with you to assure you there's nothing wrong with your phone even though you have it in your hand and know there's something wrong. And in all honesty every phone should be recalled because of the lens flare if the camera. That's a major issue noteworthy if a recall. Google doesn't want scar of their first all Google phone to tarnish their image and branding. I spoke to Google cs and the rep was totally real and honest starting that the camera has caused many phones to be replaced knowing all of them have the same camera issue. He said they've replaced do many phones that it had caused a delay of others getting their phones. Google actually has phones that are new put aside for replacing defective phones and they've used all of their stock as replacements. Hence the reason after two months they are already sending out used replacements.
I think I am going to take it to a Verizon store tomorrow because the process of showing them the issue will be a lot easier and maybe they have older phones in stock that don't have locked bootloader

Wanting to Upgrade from a G3

Hey guys,
I'm looking to upgrade from a G3, the only problem I am unsure of is the obvious bootloop problem. Is anyone still using G4's that have been working for a long time? I won't be gaming at all, the most intensive cpu task I will be doing is probably skype video calls. I really want a G4, but the bootloop problem seems like a real let down.
I was wondering if there are any G4 xda members who have followed the whole development of the bootloop problem on the forums, reddit, and everything else. I have looked at lots of stuff, but I don't really understand the progression of the issue as well as if I was watching it unfold. If someone has followed it, they probably have a better idea than I do, of the overall current situation on the bootloop issue.
I want to get a G4 because the newer phones like the G5 are starting to look pretty gross and they keep getting bigger and uglier. The G4 seems like the last good step at the moment from my trusty G3.
Cheers

1. Buy a model which can be unlocked (like the h815 international)
2. Ensure that the serial starts with 603 or higher (604,605...) best is to ensure it was not refurbished (e.g. motherboard replaced)
3. Ensure you will have warranty for at least 1 year
4. Do a regular backup once you've received your device
I own 2 models with serial 60x since 1 year without any single problem and heavy usage.
I saw no single prove(!) that a non refurbished 60x serial device has got that infamous bootloop yet.
Guarantees.. you will get none. For absolute no device. That's why a valid warranty is important.

I see. So there haven't been any boot loop reports with 60x model numbers? I thought I read somewhere that LG hadn't fixed the problem at all?
I am planning to get the international version. However I don't know about the warranty, it seems like a waste of time. If my G4 ended up bootlooping I don't really think LG can truly fix the problem under warranty anyway. Either I get a 60x G4 without a warranty and it doesn't bootloop, or I get one and it does bootloop and if I also had a warranty it would be useless since that would mean that LG hasn't actually fixed the problem at all, and is unable to. It probably also means that at this late point with the G4 being an older device, they wont be trying to fix the G4 bootloop issue either.
I just want some more people who have G4s with later model numbers to give me some faith in buying one.
I know that fixed phones by lg with warranty still having that problem. But i dont know anything about 60x series

first i would either keep the g3 or find something else.
i havnt had a bootloop issue yet but locked bl and just the scare of knowing my device is unusable any day. puts me on edge
now i know some people arent as ocd or anal as I. but if u are any where near what i am you dont need the stress in your life. lol
its a great device i do have root just no twrp and it has lots of potential even like it is on stock rom.
im glad i got it but ive sold it 3 times now and have ended up with it back in decent shape so its most def a soldier
i dont and have never had a waranty i did a thermal paste cooling mod on mine and for all i know that paste is whats kept the solder joint from breaking.
never did actually figure out how to tel what serial num mine has but its not a refurb and it was manfacrd in 10 of 2015
some of the g4s have a flashable tot file to "fix the issue" by shutting down the damaged cores but essentially turning it into a mid ranged quad core phone which i have shut mine down and have tested iffrent lowered clock speeds and still ok. not blazing fast but works.
You could also just wait some days for the g6

if you in USA get h811 and check the list of h815 that can be unlocked if you not in usa.
6xx have bootloops i have heard of 1-2 603's so the chances are very low compared to the first one.

Yeah I did read something about that core shutting down fix. So you have had yours for a year? I don't know how widespread the problem is, because most people won't go to the forums to praise a working phone. I really want to get one. But only if I can be reasonably comfortable that I am able to mod it or something to prevent a bootloop occuring. What is your use like? Do you game? I don't. It will be used lightly compared to most. I never install games.

I'm not in the US so I would get a H815. So do you think the reason for less bootloops being reported is due to people not buying the device anymore? Less people have that model? Or less of the people who would come onto the internet and complain? Less of the phone geeks ended up buying later G4s because of the bootloop reports?

i use it like a high end phone should. im not a super big gamer got the ps4 for that i d.id a writeup a while back on coverting samsung gear vr for g4 and ive done my share of vring. i use a otg cable and or blueputdroid to connect ps3 control to it for vr.
like i said i got a sprint varient which is on older firmware rooted no twrp very few modified stock roms.
i like the phone enough i busted two screens the orig and a aftermarket. btw dont ever buy from fixez.com claim oe quality its just a sheet of reg glass broke 2 weeks after i bought it 6 months ago from a scratch no bull**** no drop i ended up putting the spidered glass back on it.
the way ive eased my mind is basicly i buy sell and trade phones all the time. i have a backup i keep put up just incase.
also like i said i did do a thermal paste mod that helps cool her down.
ive sold my g3 3 times and ended up buying it back cause the people loved it so much theyve all upgraded to g5.
when and if i could i would prob buy a g5 or g6 when it comes out against my better judgment of lgs part
the selling point of a g4 is the camera manual mode takes some of the best night shots ive ever seen. days shots are killer

So the hardware revision seems to have fixed it? I thought I read somewhere that it didn't fix it? Did LG at least make it less common?
Do you also know if this was happening to people across the board? Or was it just a few people? It's a bit risky I must say. How do you find the serial number?

Thats really interesting. Have you heard of anyone else warding off the bootloops with thermal paste? It seems like quite a good thing to do. It would also be good on the G3. Thing is, if I get a G4 with a warranty. I wont be able to do that. Probably best to get a second hand one and do it.
Has anyone permanently fixed their phones by resolering the chip do you know?
Thanks for all the information mate

I dont know. I know people heat em with heat guns freeze em. Put paper in behind the chips to apply pressure. I thjnk im lone wolf on this therory
G3 is not a bad phone and G4 is not a big upgrade so I am not sure why would you want to upgrade. I'm sure there are better phones out there especially with 820 SoC released 808 is getting old. I bought my G4 1 year ago mainly because it was very cheap compared to similar models from other brands but now I don't see anything why would you buy it.
Orcam said:
Yeah I did read something about that core shutting down fix. So you have had yours for a year? I don't know how widespread the problem is, because most people won't go to the forums to praise a working phone. I really want to get one. But only if I can be reasonably comfortable that I am able to mod it or something to prevent a bootloop occuring. What is your use like? Do you game? I don't. It will be used lightly compared to most. I never install games.
Yeah I saw that too. I don't want to spend so much on a new phone. Who knows, could have an even worse hardware fault.
I'm not in the US so I would get a H815. So do you think the reason for less bootloops being reported is due to people not buying the device anymore? Less people have that model? Or less of the people who would come onto the internet and complain? Less of the phone geeks ended up buying later G4s because of the bootloop reports?

That's true. The only problem is, I am not in it for the specs really I am more into it for the looks/feel in the hand and possible continued support on XDA for the device. The G3 does still have it yes, but I would like to slowly work my way up. What would you be recommending? I was actually looking at downgrading to a Moto X 2013 edition because it feels just so damn good in the hand. The G5 and G6 look vomit worthy to me. I just hate the look of all the new flag ships coming out.

Oh did you read that they actually changed the design? Where did you find that out? Do you have a G4?

Aha. I see. So these forums are still quite active on XDA? There seem to be a few people still on the device.

Camera (stopped working) issues (H815 europe)

I'm having some rather annoying issues with my G4, the camera barely works, sometimes it opens but i get a black screen, like my finger is on the lens, but it's not. Sometimes that results in an error message "Unfortunately, camera has stopped" or "camera unavailable", sometimes it just stays black and sometimes the phone reboots.
And now lately i can't use the flashlight anymore, says it's already being used.
The camera works again after i reboot, but most of the times i have to reboot multiple times.
I read quite a few forums and even threads here and tried pretty much everything (clearing cache, uninstalling LG Smartworld or something like that, removing the battery, etc.) and nothing really worked, so yesterday i finally decided it was time for more drastic measures and i unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and then installed Imperium ROM v14 and it seemed fine but today i get a black screen again. I didn't restore any of my previous apps and settings on purpose, to see if they were causing the problem.
Someone here suggested (to someone else) to try flashing KDZ or something like that, i and probably the other guy, have no idea what KDZ is or where to get it.
I bought this phone used almost 2 years ago, so i have no warranty. Didn't have any issues until about 6-9 months ago and they seem to be getting worse, battery life isn't what it used to be either.
My only options are to try a non-stock rom like CM, to go back to an android 5.0 based rom, or to sell the phone as a semi-defective product, maybe i can get a used S5 for it.
This is very frustrating and somewhat ironic, since i bought this phone because it had the best camera at the time and i barely use it for anything else than taking pictures.
I'm never buying LG again.
This is a fairly common issue, maybe common enough that it should be a sticky.
Got the same issue after display repair. Camera got broken. I always needed to reboot phone so camera gets working again. Only fix was to send it to repair. They replaced camera, after that it worked again normal.
For me it was guarantee because before display repair I didn't have issue like that.
You can replace your camera, I don't think it's so difficult.
It's also not that expensive:

about 20-30€

OK, that's something i didn't even think of, so it's definitely a hardware issue ?
I read up on this KDZ thing and it seems to be a firmware updater for LG phones, would using that help ? and/or is the risk of bricking he phone too great ?

It is hardware issue. I had exact same issue. I was in stock. Didn't modify anything. After display repair they completely reflashed it. Of course you can try other firmware, but really had the same issue.
I didn't spend so much time on it, therefore don't remember exactly if i got force closes.
I only remember that the camera worked, later i got black screen, i could see the buttons, but no pic. After restart it worked again.
I also thought software issue because after restart it worked. Tried really everything which was possible without unlocked bootloader, but didn't worked.
I can't say it is definitive, could be also a motherboard issue. Or an other part of the camera (flash light, ir sensor), I only tell you what was replaced on my phone.
I would try it, camera is not so expensive.

You convinced me, i just ordered a used one, it will be here be thursday i think, the guy also said it could be a motherboard issue, i imagine that isn't very cheap or easy to replace ?
Also lately i have been getting flashlight issues too, says it's already in use, so maybe the flashlight is broken too or the camera is causing that too.

Flashlight is camera related. I believe i had the same issue with flash light.
I think I tried to use other camera apps, i always got the message, that it is in use.
If it is mainboard, you should buy a new phone. Mainboard is too expensive.
But I don't believe in it, mainboard issue your phone wouldn't start anymore as we know how sensitive G4 is.
Flashlight would only freeze camera while making photos. You can check ir sensor, use an other camera and check out if there comes light from sensor.
I don't think that would be the reason to stop the camera from working.
So if the back camera is broken then why doesn't the front one work ? is it because they both run in 1 app and are kinda tied together ?
The replacement back camera should be arriving in 1-2 days.

I have had it where there camera crashed out the box
Back on my g2. It was a refurb. And ended up being corrupted firmware and or kernel. After a reflash of firmware worked great. Ures sounds firmware related if the front aint working either. Have u tried any 3rd party camera apps to see if same results

Strange way to write 'yours', so using KDZ to update or reflash the firmware might help ? is it risky ?
I haven't tried it since i installed the Imperium Rom, but with the stock rom any and all apps that used the camera wouldn't work.
This all started after i sideloaded the google camera app (to take VR photos), which was not supported by the G4, i wonder if doing that is what caused all this.

There havebeen a few camera failures and a good majority have been hardware related.
As long as u dont downgrade ure firmware not risky. And yes if thats when ure issues started i would safely say that is the issue. U may just try reflashing the rom ure on clean wipe all but ext sd. And start over and see if it persists

Well i just went from stock to Imperium and while unlocking the phone everything was wiped anyway so doing that again won't change anything, unless there is some cache or something i don't know about.
Anyway, i ordered this new camera so i'll wait for it and if that doesn't work then i'll try reflashing the firmware.
Are newer LG flagships (G5, G6) just as poorly built ? cuz i'm pretty sure i'm going back to samsung after this.

I think they are. Dont know forst hand. I love my note 5. My battery xied in it the other day so im waitin on a bettery hopefully it works. Im been so fed up with lg.
got the new camera but haven't installed it yet since my phone has other issues right now, like freezing, random restarts, the quick toggles are gone, my wallpapers seems to have been removed, etc. and now it's stuck on booting (not bootlooping though)
I would like to reflash the firmware (KDZ) but the get the right one i need my IMEI number (the one underneath the battery seems to not be the one) or to see what software version the phone is running, i would need a working phone for both.
Would reflashing the Imperium rom fix this ?
The imperium rom is v20P, but there is no kdz firmware like that only V20D or V20G
Have that for months
That freakin camera issue is haunting me for months. I have tried reflashing EVERY freaking rom(stock,cm,everything) and it doesnt change anything. I have teardown my g4 to parts, plug them in and still the same.Sometimes works for a week, sometimes doesnt work for 1 month. I don;t get it. Finally someone with my problem! Man can you replace the camera module and tell me if that works so i order mine?

Did you try reflashing the firmware ? (the KDZ thing)
Also no, i can't try that for you right now, like i wrote previously i got bigger problems, also i got my camera locally for like $15, if you tried everything else that is not a lot of money to spend, and if it doesn't fix your problem then you can just resell the camera. Now go do it.

i reflash using kdz and other programs. To give you the prespective that even deletes the twrp and fully wipes all phones data and flashes the new ones.If you flash yours it sould be fine because i have flashed nearly all the letters (ex. v20d,e etc). Flash it see that the camera is not fixed and then change the module to tell me..in greece new camera costs 30 euros so it's not that cheap for me to spend and then does not fix nothing

Well i didn't buy a new one, i bought a used one from local listings site (like craigslist in the USA or Kijiji in Canada, every country has their own) and if the new camera doesn't work you can sell it for the exact same amount, all it will cost you is shipping and time.
If i can fix the booting issue and i still have camera issues i will install the new camera, but don't wait for me, it could take weeks, or i could just get angry and buy a used Samsung Galaxy S5 and throw this in the trash (or most likely sell it for parts)

It's not a shop, it's a website like ebay, anyone can sell anything there, you have many sites like that i'm sure, every country does. 99% of things sold there are by regular people like you and me.
Google "used lg g4 camera for sale" (in your language) and the first 5 websites will probably be what you are looking for.
This is what ours looks like https://www.olx.ro/oferte/q-lg-g4/, there are at least 10-20 smaller sites, there are even facebook groups, where people post the stuff they don't want anymore.
You're saying you have none of these ?

Persistent sound issue no matter what

I've done just about everything. There's a log cat below. EVERY ROM, EVERY KERNEL STOCK OR CUSTOM, this issue is there after the first reboot. Im only going to answer every question that goes like "have you tried...." With a full rundown of what I did and results. I will remind I've tried every custom nougat rom, stock or custom and I've tried stock marshmallow rom to. Also some roms haven't even had sound on first boot. Some roms will work for a bit then they will do a soft reboot that takes 30-45 minutes to complete. Then have no sound. I'm open to taking my phone apart since my screen is fu*ked up. Im begging at this point I love this phone, I've had it for 2 months, I don't want to have to buy another one.
Tried unbrick tool yet? That may have a slightly different effect than just flashing stock ROM (as it completely nukes the device and installs everything again).
Anyways, you may have a hardware issue. In that case taking the phone apart won't do much ... You can only check the connections, that's about it.

I did actually brick it awhile back trying to solve that damn sound issue. I used the mega unbrick guide to fix it, I can try again. Cause hell who knows it might fix it. Thanks for the recommendations.
Found out it is hardware i narrowed it to the aux port board which is what the fingerprint sensor, microphone, speaker connect to. I'm ordering a new part tomorrow for it
