[Q] Any word on a BL unlock anytime soon? - Verizon LG G4

Any news? Getting real bored without a phone I can break and fix 5 times in the same day . Leaning towards just replacing this G4 with a Nexus 5 2015 when it comes out or even a .....dare i say it...........iPhone 6s. I'm sure I'd be sick of the iPhone but hey, I want to change things up and the lack of an unlocked BL & rom's is killing me.

Have you checked out the Moto X Pure? Bootloader can be unlocked right out of the box, and I'm pretty sure we're going to have a custom recovery within the week. I think of it like a Nexus, but with a memory card slot.

Checked that out and it sounds pretty neat, don't think it'll beat the new Nexus in price or features though. Think I'll wait until officials are out about the 2015 N5 first.

Judging by the lack of traffic in this sub forum it may never happen.

Just sold/shipped my G4, so I guess a bootloader unlock is imminent. Good luck with everything, guys.

Oh well, I'm used to the S4 never getting a boot loader unlock after one of its updates. Rooting does all I need, and xposed adds so many customizations that I don't see a need for ROMs anymore.

Well, guys...I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I got this reply from LG developer support team a few days ago. I was trying to work the angle of "I bought this phone outright, it should be mine to do with it as I please. " Evidently, it didn't work. Just wanted to share the response so you guys don't continue to hold out hope.
Hello,
We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
Currently, the European models of the LG G4 supports unlocking the bootloader and there is no plan to support bootloader unlock in other models.
*
Additionally, we are afraid that we can’t help you refund your device.

I'm glad I made the swap, and I'm glad I did it while I could still get decent money for my G4. It only cost me about $100 to get into the MXP.

Well, bootloader unlocks are up to the approval of the carrier....so all the cool carriers (T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, etc) will all have unlockable bootloaders, but Verizon cringes at the thought -- the thought of such a "security" risk on their network. So, they say "LG, don't allow our users to unlock their bootloaders otherwise we won't sell your phones." And LG makes sure that their OEM unlock methods don't work on Verizon.

Let's get LG to unlock our bootloaders! Retweet and sign the petition please

Retweet this https://twitter.com/xboxfanj/status/263413673643630593
And send this to all applicable LG support channels
Why are you alienating the development enthusiasts with your Optimus G? It has unparalleled hardware, but the locked bootloader makes it a tough sell for myself and the development enthusiasts at XDA, RootzWiki, and many more sites, and it also makes me unlikely to recommend it to my friends and family who go to me for advice on their technological purchases (and people who go to other development experts around the world). Samsung has unlocked bootloaders. Motorola and HTC have unlockable bootloaders. Now, it's time to step it up, LG and follow suit. I know you don't want me and millions of people like me to buy from your competitors. So fix it!
I really want to buy your Optimus G and have the beautiful design and amazing S4 Pro processor, but if I have to forfeit that to be able to use my phone how I would like, that's a sacrifice I am willing to make.
There are 1,310 people and counting who have signed this petition asking for an unlockable bootloader, so get your act together, LG.
http://www.change.org/petitions/lg-...opportunity-to-unlock-bootloader-in-lg-phones
This could propel you ahead of Samsung, Apple, and HTC, since your hardware at the moment is by far the best, but your software, updates, and developer support are lacking. An unlockable bootloader would end these complaints and make hundreds of thousands of people more likely to buy an Optimus G.
And don't forget to sign this petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/lg-...opportunity-to-unlock-bootloader-in-lg-phones
Together, we can make LG change.
Together, we can make the Optimus G a better phone.
Let's unite and make LG unlock those bootloaders, just as consumers have made HTC and Motorola do the same.
This too: https://twitter.com/xboxfanj/status/263415788218753024
And send that to their other channels as well. The more people that send this, the more likely it is that LG will acquiesce.
Here is the response I got from LG's email:
------Reply to Your Inquiry-------
The bootloader is locked, Jake, at the Carrier's request I'm afraid.
If you are looking for a Developer device, however, then you can look forward to a device that Google should be announcing sometime this week.
So sorry about the inconvenience this has caused, and I hope you have a great day!
That's BS since Sprint doesn't have any locked devices, so there's no way that's true.
I told them that and haven't heard back yet.

Motorola Photon is locked.
Would you think it would be hard to unlock the bootloader if the Nexus 4 is pretty much the same phone.

Well, I did sign the petition... Hopefully it helps, BTW, I pre-ordered mine today from Sprint, not Wirefly in hopes that I actually get it early. We'll see...
Just posting to say good luck to you guys on this issue. I know we tried a good bit of petitioning with the photon so we could retain our 4g while unlocking.

I put my name on the petition also hopefully lg will listen because I really want 4.2 on this beast, and and for those that ask why not get the nexus 4 its simple 16 gigs isn'tbnear enough storage
And because it isn't for sprint. I cannot switch carriers at the moment.
Another good point and who knows if sprint will get the n4
Signed, I really want to get this, but won't if the bootloader isn't unlocked.
Signed and loving the phone its amazing

Possible Safestrap-esque recovery for our locked bootloader G4?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking/tool-multirom-recovery-replacement-t3102395 I came across this thread while browsing XDA, and I didn't know if this has been tried before on the G4. It's basically a recovery replacement for a locked bootloader phone that allows us to flash multiple roms to a device with a partitioned sd card (I think, I may be wrong). I don't have any extra SD cards so I'm throwing it out here in case anyone wants to try it out and see if it works. If it does maybe we'll start to see some rom development *fingers crossed*

I used this on my Note 3 and it worked really well! It's a great recovery replacement. Unfortunately you will need developers to build their roms to support MultiSystem.
I haven't tried this on my G4 because of the lack of MultiSystem roms for it. I haven't even been able to get FlashFire to work with my G4 (it may have been the file, I tried to flash to 60 FPS mod in flashfire and it failed, it didn't cause any issues, it just didn't flash like it was suppose to).
I am really hoping for a Bootloader unlock soon, or something similar to safestrap. IMHO MultiSystem works great, but SafeStrap was a better, and easier to use solution!
FlashFire works. I'm just waiting on the roms!

Dang how are you already out in 6 months? I got this on release day and I still have a year to go. So sick of LG's skin but I can't get out early since I was dumb enough to do Verizon's device payment plan. Not that this phone is worth anything in resale.

May 2015 for the G4.. I like my v10 better. My S7 edge is okay but not worth the upgrade to me.I am planning for the lg V series upgrade or note 6.
I have until August of 2017 on mine. I upgraded to the iPhone 6 plus in August of 2015, then sold it for $500 and bought a brand new opened box G4 for $300 in February 2016. So my payment plan was for the iPhone, but in the end, I'll be paying $200 less total.

I actually did try with my one and it said it doesnt support the US variant and I thought it was the European version.
Really!!???
First people were complaining about how long root was taking and started saying it's never going to come out. Then it ends up coming out 1 month earlier than it did with the G3.
Now bootloader. Patience!!!
Devs don't get paid for this stuff, lot of them do it on their own spare time.
Week and a half until the Moto X Pure, and LG Nexus 5 (2015) probably won't be too far behind.

I know it's not the case for all devs, but some of them make really good money doing this in their spare time.
Honestly I don't think the G4 is that popular which won't attract that many talented devs that can decode LG's security boot encription. Those who can crack the code probaby don't sit around playing with cell phones anyways.

Any evidence to back up your claims?
Then define "really good money" as both a lump sum for say unlocking a boot loader and for payment per hour as that may mean something different to you than other people.
To be honest depending on how valuable your time is, it may be cheaper to purchase a EUR open LG G4...I'm tempted to do so and give my TWN version to my GF who wouldn't need things like root or unlocked boot loaders...but also need to see if it's worth it. Currently there is only one custom kernel, and I'm not that interested in that, and honestly that's the only thing I'd use the unlocked boot loader for.
Before this gets out of control, let me just say that none of the LG bootloaders on previous models were ever unlocked. The G2 was pretty popular and still has a locked bootloader. I haven't even heard of any recent LG devices to get unlocked bootloaders and very surprised that the G4 international variant even has this option.
So the question "why don't we have unlocked bootloaders" is an unrealitic question based on prior history.
The REAL question, would be "now that we have root, is there any discussion or development in having a custom recovery or bootloader bypass?"
I also want to ADD that NONE of the LOLLIPOP firmwares have been hacked (as far as I know). Both the G2 and G3 required to use a KitKat aboot partition setup that allowed us to install custom recoveries and such.
Personally, if I were a developer, I would delay the release a week for every one of these posts found for the phone Im unlocking the bootloader for.
Id even make a notice when a post like this would pop up, showing proof that Im delaying the unlocked bootloader release, just to piss off the impatient people, which, typically, are the ones least capable of doing it themselves.

Trade in or not to Trade in?

I recently picked up the G4 for $99 to avoid being charged an extra $20/month for my unlimited data.
I'm coming from the G3, which I loved. My question is, does anyone think development of any ROMs will happen?
I remembereh when I got the G3, the same thing was happening, no development, then over night it exploded. My G4 came with 11a, which is nice except the miserable touch experience. Any thoughts, should I sell it and get something different, or ride out the storm and hope for the best? Sorry for all the rambling.

Don't forget Xposed, I have a guide on that here as well.
Personally I don't think any development will come. I had the G2, G3, and G4, and with each new model there was less and less dev support. From what I heard you need to be on 10b for the possible bootloader exploit, but most of us are past that version now.

I just sold mine a week ago used for $360. New ones are selling for anywhere between $310-$350. Still more than a Nexus 6 new for $289.
If you wanted to flip a phone, the G4 is one of the worst honestly. You should have gotten an iPhone or Note5.
Question. I think I can live with root and freezing the LG UI bloat stuff. The main question is are the new models fixed for the touchscreen issue? I'm seeing new ones for sale on swappa. They have manufacture dates of 08/2015. Are August production phones free of the touchscreen issue?
I just received a May 2015 g4 from best buy. Still on 10b. They keep trying to force an update. I will try to keep stalling. Was it 11 update that introduced the touchscreen issues? I don't want to root yet because I want Android pay.

I am interested in buying LG X Screen (K500Y). Apperantly there is no root for it and also for other phones in this family. And there won't be any if someone won't have motivation to look for it. So here is the thread and the first donation. From me, 15$.
So if you own a phone from this family and want root, this is your shot. Don't ever give any number here if you are not gonna pay. I don't want to be responsible for bringing such flagrant acts. I can't run after people asking what they've promised.
But of course, I don't think this thread will even get replies yet alone amount to something. But you have to try in life even though the result is obvious.
I'll plop $50 down for the Boost Mobile X Power LS755
This phone is great... very much worth it!

Indeed. That's why I am interested in it. But seems no else is. I won't be buying it if I can't root it... Shame. Such a beautiful mid-range phone.
It's ONLY $59 bucks on eBay and FREE SHIPPING.. well worth it with its 1.8 gigahertz OCTA Core processor 2 gig ram mediatek chipset the Boost mobile version which scores twice as much as the GSM Cricket model in benchmarks.
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/131981455410

[/COLOR]It's well worth it even without Root I mean it's a quick little phone man and the battery lasts a long long time so well worth it even without root
Actually here says the app can root LG X Screen. Can anyone verify that?

........ the report adds that LG will wait until the Mobile World Congress trade show in late February to officially reveal the X power 2 phone. It is supposed to have a 5.5-inch display, a 13MP rear camera, a 5MP wide-angle front camera and a 4500MAH BATTERY!

If you want a root for it I could do it if I had the device or a way to emulate stock ROM on PC. Or if you wanna try to find a similarity list? I have extensive experience with these devices.
LG gpad v410, Gpad vk810, LG vs840 (Lucid), LG vs980 (G2) (Verizon)
LG exceed and all the like devices.
Also rooted an LG Lucky on Straight Talk :silly:
I could more than likely manage it haha.

Like put whatever $$$$$ you want towards a device guys between me and my bro upstate we would ABSOLUTELY manage it at some point, there is no way its totally impossible, even ZTE bricks from WalMart can catch the flu haha.

I don't have the device. I want to buy it that's why I started this thread. But like the phone itself its unpopular. Shame, such a nice phone. Sorry I couldn't help supplying you anything.
Might wanna wait and get X Power 2 supposedly coming out within next couple months which will come with a bit higher specs and 4500MAH battery

If not, still great phone without root and that is a very rare thing for me to say... I picked up the GSM version and it's just as nice and smooth even though antutu Benchmark is half of the Boost mobile versions score of around 23000 GSM Cricket model versus 43,000 Boost mobile version
I understand the whole (fine without root) thing that is exactly how I feel about most HTC devices, however I would go insane just because I know how LG's work the easiest lol, am currently on an s6 edge+ and I feel like im in another country, touchwiz sucks!
is the bootloader can be unlocked , fastboot available ?

I would assume they replaced the Fastboot.img with a download mode -.-. & anything over Lollipop on LG is bootloader strapped down hard, I remember my Gpad v410, having to restore to KK just to root with KingRoot, then Loki patch twrp install, huge loop that was totally unnecessary
