Fire Phone and Chromecast - anyone else having trouble? - Amazon Fire Phone

Hi all, I just got a Fire Phone since they're so cheap and have set it up with 4.6.3 and google play, most things seem to be working fine, but I am having some issues with my chromecast. Most apps seem to work Youtube, Beyondpod, Crunchyroll, Play Music and the Chromecast cast screen all work just fine, but Netflix doesn't seem to recognize anything besides my roommates Fire Stick, and Hulu doesn't display the cast icon at all!
Netflix and Hulu are my two most used casting apps so losing them would be a big loss, has anyone else had issues or know of a workaround?

I was having a similar issue. I couldn't find anything on fixing it so I ended up just flashing CM11.
---------- Post added at 05:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:47 PM ----------
To clarify: I'm on the 9/30 build. All casting works fine. They fixed the camera app (HDR still doesn't work) but you're still missing NFC. The mute button during calls doesn't work but there are some work arounds.

Tried using Netflix from the Google Play store rather than the Amazon App Store version? I have no issues casting to my Chromecast or my Mircast enabled TV.

I am facing the same issue with my prime video , even when I cast the screen I get the audio and the menu items around the video on the TV but the actual video still plays on the mobile.
I got so bored of it that I ordered a Fire Stick yesterday " I am planing to get a new TV so this one will go to the bedroom along with the Chromecast and Fire Stick and Apple TV will stay with the new TV)
I live in UAE so accessing the prime is a bit tricky without a paid DNS provider , so my plan is
1. Connect to VPN using Unlimited Free VPN
2. Start a download
3. Disconnect the VPN to maintain a good speed
4. Cast the download to Fire Stick
I already do the above, but on the phone without casting it.
the thing that didn't work for me with is Google Music, I couldn't find the button to cast to Chromecast ( I downloaded the Google Music app through apkmirror as it's not available in my region)

Does the camera work with other apps like mobile banking check deposit, or snapchat and instagram? Not being able to use the camera with those apps is the main reason I've chosen not to use CM.

There is no workaround, it probably sees the phone as Amazon Fire and blocks it from being able to see the chromecast icon. Flash a new ROM. You almost never use Chromecast on any Amazon Fire * device with Hulu or Netflix.

No other apps give me problems casting. I flashed CM11 (9/30 build) and everything was working fine but as of lately Hulu Plus' casting feature is intermittent. Its there and I can successfully cast something. Then later on, its missing for no reason.

Hulu is just bad in general at times (probably lazy dev's not wanting to full fix Chromecast connection), that and HBO GO. It sometimes disconnects even on my Note 3 and LG pad and you can't do nothing but relaunch the app and find a way to kill the streaming.

I'm guessing your fire is connected via wifi? I just tried and I get an error "No Wi-Fi Connection You must be on Wi-Fi to stream video content". I'm connected via the ethernet port.

I think it is a left over restriction from older cell streaming quality and data limits. The apps are told to look for WiFi only and I don't think the devs bother to even consider a wired option because they mainly concentrate on phones. I was able to turn on USB Ethernet on the Visual Land 7D and a tone of games and apps couldn't see it and would ask for Wifi including Play.

Thanks! Also, could you please indicate, how you played the link from XBMC? I tried to open an Acestream link from SportsDevil but it did not work for me.
I got Acestreams to work inside of xbmc on ouya with p2p addon but it kept crashing the Acestream on the play store wants to update so that one never connected however I installed the latest version of the APK and it worked for a day then all of a sudden the Acestream Engine app was crashing immediately on open and was bugging out my XBMC so I had to uninstall. If anyone finds a good version that will not try to update and is let me know Thanks

Maybe you can try to connect to a Wi-Fi network that doesn't necessarily have internet like a router plugged into wall only, then have both Ethernet and Wi-Fi both connected to Amazon fire.

So does the app work pretty well with keyboard and mouse good quality etc?
Any update on this now that the firetv has been rooted? Or has anyone modified the app yet?
If this was iOS it would be easy to solve as there are a half dozen tweaks to fool apps into thinking your on wifi. Surely there must be something similar on Android.
I'll check when I get home.

Ah, so something does exist! I'm completely new to Android so my knowledge of Android tweaks is limited.
I will give a try.
I side loaded the Xfinity app before root and it works "ok". Using a mele pro air mouse, I can get around the app pretty well. The only thing I notice, which I think I read someone on here before, is that there is some frame rate issues. The video doesnt seem to be 100% smooth, especially on live tv.
Anyone else notice this?

Well I can confirm the xposed fake wifi module works with the xfinity app to trick it to work over the lan. However with that module activated there is some weird stuff going on with the firetv gui, it bounces around the menu a bit. If I select say prime video it'll jump down to music, it's pretty weird.

Actually chromecast doesn't work at 10'5. It starts to play YouTube and stuff but after that system ui process crashes and reboot is the only way to go. Any fix available?
Did you try EZCast for example? Is the problem with Chromecast app or with the screen cast in general?
Chromecast.app and Samsung Galaxy Tab S aren't working correctly together.. Could it be the device? The app? That's anyone's guess. Best thing to do is email chromecast and Samsung.

Tried only chromecast. My guess is that it is the app to blame since it crashes in every app that tries to use chromecast but I emailed both samsung and Google.

Chromecast works perfect on my 10.5, mine has never crashed and I stream tons of YouTube, vudu, and Netflix to two different chromecasts.
Your comment makes it sound like chromecast doesn't work on any tab s 10.5, which is not the truth because it works perfect on mine. I can't wait until they add the screen mirroring feature for the tab s and chromecast.
Have you tried Uninstalling and reinstalling the app? Or maybe rebooting your chromecast?
It's happening to several people here. (including me) So something is definitely wrong.

The issue is it doesn't work with Google Play apps. It works fine with Netflix. Try this test:
- Play a movie using Play Movies & TV (you can use the free Gravity Movie)
- Cast to move to chromecast
- While it is playing on the TV (through chromecast), pull down the notification drawer

Wow, you're right, I just did this test with play movies and play music and it did freeze my tablet. Well, I hope they get that fixed because I have 10 or so movies I've bought on Google play.
I did tests with other chromecast apps and they all work except the Google apps.
Email Samsung and Google. The more people that make issue with it. The quicker they will seek a resolution
This issue is carried across most of the Samsung tablet platform (Note, Pros...etc) and its surprising it hasn't been addressed.
Netflix will work fine, the Avia app, but the Google based ones will error out the tablet if you pull the notification down while playing media.
More people need to report it so it can be fixed! :good:
Im having trouble with allcast seeing my Chromecast. The Chromecast app will see it and allow for config but not Allcast. Tried the same procedure on my N5 and was able to cast video no problem.

Also BubbleUPNP makes the system crash. Emailed them both but I wonder if I ever get any response..
After some reboots of the Chromecast, router, and Tab all works well
I just got a Chromecast this week and was excited to play with it on my Tab S 10.5, but I've had the same systemui crashes after using the notification drawer while streaming. It's pretty annoying because it's near-impossible to get the system to respond as the crash notice comes up every few seconds while streaming to the Chromecast.
What I've found is that if I preempt the Chromecast streaming by initiating streaming from my phone or PC instead of the Tab then the crashing stops and I can then use the Tab again. I hope they fix this soon.

Fire TV stick help EDIT: DONT EVER SHUT OFF BLUETOOTH AND ADB!

I'll start by saying I'm a dummy. I shut off bluetooth in the settings.apk and have no way to control the stick now. ADB must be turned off because I can't seem to control it with the utility app. Anyway to fix this? I tried using usb devices with otg y cable but it doesn't work. The device isn't rooted. Thanks.
Edit: Read some more, yup I'm screwed.
It seems like bluetooth always comes back on by itself when I turn it off. Did you reboot? Do you have XBMC/Kodi installed? Try using an XBMC/Kodi remote app like Yatse and open the settings app through Kodi with the Yatse remote and see if that works. Yatse will find your Kodi if it is on the same network and auto connect. If you don't know how to open apps through Kodi let me know.

Oh I just remembered, the Fire TV remote app. Go to the play store on you phone and search "fire TV" the remote app should be near the beginning of the search results, install it. Reboot your stick then connect. IIt will auto find your device if its on the same network.

I did not slam you at all. I simply said if you would have read the description you would have known it was a wifi app. There is no other way to say that. Its not my fault that you can not handle the truth Just because someone is honest it does not mean they are being mean. If I tell you not to touch fire because it will burn you, it means not to touch fire, and if someone tells you to read something so that you will know what it is, then it means you should read it. Thats not being mean in the least. You can take it howw you want, but I was actually being nice.

[Q] YouTube Crashes to Home Screen

Hi guys, i have searched everywhere and failed to find an answer. Please advise how can i resolve this issue. I have 3 AFTVs and all 3 have this issue. All the FireTVs boxes rooted on Version 51.1.1_user_51170220. Every time i start YouTube and select a video, it crashes to main home screen. If i also cast something using YouTube Casting, it does same thing. I normally use Kodi, but when i play YouTube, i normally reboot box or shutdown Kodi completely. I have also removed Kodi to test and it still crashes.
Hmm tried all, still no luck

You can try to install the original YouTube app from the Google store. Link is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.youtube&hl=en . The YouTube version I have currently is 10.24.57.
I have it on my FTV and runs fine with no issues. My FTV is at the latest rooted version. Note that my FTV does have the Google Play and Google Play Services installed as well. I think I read somewhere that YouTube app (from the Google store) needs Play Services to run.
I have also tried the YouTube for Google TV app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.youtube.tv&hl=en). But that app always gives me an error "Connection to Server lost". Despite multiple cleanups of FTV with regards to data/cache and re-installs and etc etc, it always gives me that error. So I gave up on that and just run the original app.

Ok, I installed the Amazon version (1.1.1), the one with the blue box that says "YouTube" in white fonts. This was side by side install with Google version. This works.
I then uninstalled the Google one, rebooted my FTV and tried the Amazon one. And that runs fine as well. I wish it didn't work so that we can have a repeatable bug, but unfortunately not. I also did the same steps on my other FTV (one rooted version back) and all runs fine, side by side and by itself.
Unrelated to your problem, I noticed a quirk in the Amazon version. Neither the wireless keyboard or the Amazon's official FTV app (on iPhone) can be used to search within the application. But keyboard functionality in the Google version works fine in the search.

Could be. Maybe you can dump the logs and post them. Someone can take a peek and see if something jumps out.
EDIT: I just thought of something. Are you actually running the version 1.1.1? From the version number, I am imagining that there is probably an older version. If you are getting an older version from Amazon store (because your OS is old), maybe you can try running the 1.1.1. Let me know if you need that apk if that is true.
Or conversely, if you are in fact running 1.1.1, maybe the older version might work with your older OS. But I don't have that version for you to test.
It use to work fine up until 3 weeks ago. It stopped then. Ill update the box over the weekend to see maybe that fixes it. Thank you very much.

Yes, I guess it should be the phone one (I have masked my FTV as a phone in MarketHelper). But no, I see no cutoffs or anything. It renders it fine on my TV. I have attached couple of pictures from my FTV while running the app (playing Steven Colbert in the background). One shows the picture filling the entire TV and the other shows the stats (which you can enable for any clip you are playing in the clip menu) for this video clip (so that it can be read correctly). I did set the "Quality" to 720p in the settings of the app.
The line for "Video format" shows 1280x720 at the end. I am guessing thats what it is rendering at.. But my knowledge is limited as far as that goes
It is interesting that the "Device" is listed as "Amazon AFTB 4.2.2", and not the HTC phone... Hmm...

Hmm...

Sorry, my Netflix works fine (always has). I use the stock Amazon Netflix app. So I didn't have a need to try Google's Netflix app.
Regarding MarketHelper, I am not sure. I guess you can try without it (it might work because my FTV is identified as an actual FTV in the stats image above and not as a phone). If not, it should be a cinch to mask your FTV using MarketHelper. I am wondering if the video is rendering correctly because my FTV is NOT identified as a phone.. LOL.

whats wierd is for me amzon youtube works fine but amazon netflix does not work at all.
i cant possibly figure out what can cause the difference?
but i CAN suggest that the issue is in the app developement of FireOS apps
Also are you simply using ADBfire to load the APK onto the stick?

No, I use command line ADB to interact with my FTV ("adb install blahblah.apk"). Glad that YouTube works for you at least. If I were you, I would load the Google's Netflix and see how it goes. If that does not work, start by wiping your FTV clean with no apps (I am not sure about the correct sequencing for reset/data & cache clean/use CWM or not). Install Netflix from Amazon and test it and see if there are errors. You can get a log dump from your FTV and maybe someone here can see an issue. And if Netflix works, start installing one app at a time, testing Netflix and so on.
Also, are there any geographical restrictions that are tripping you up.... Are you in the US or using VPN? I recently read that some content providers are actively blocking VPNs... Not sure if Netflix is playing that game.
I have seen that if Kodi is paused, Netflix will have issues (WatchESPN is another app that I have issues with when Kodi is paused). You can also try going to the latest FTV version (rooted or otherwise) first and testing Netflix before you take on this PITA and begin your installs from scratch.
Thanks for help mate, I may not have to go any further with this.
I have found that if I use the netflix mobile app on a phone to find a video, and then "cast" it to the fire stick, it plays every single time with no problems. Video after video no issues. I can even exit app on phone and it keeps playing in the stick.
You may want to try this with the YouTube app also because it offers the cast functionality as well.
Based on this I know for sure it is not ISP related or hardware related. It is improperly coded app that was not properly tested before it was released.
found the solution for netflix issue

Can't cast to smart TV on Android pie

Just did a clean flash to the new Android pie 9.0. While on the same network with other smart devices like a TV and set top box, I would usually have the option to cast YouTube to either device without needing to put in the YouTube TV code. After Android pie upgrade, they don't show up while on the same home network. Anybody else having this issue? My Chromecast is the only thing showing up without doing anything extra.
I'm still on Oreo, but I've had to put the tv code in for a few months, even on the same network. I'm not sure why.
I've got this problem too on my Pixel 2. The TV shows up in the YT Gaming app, and in the Netflix app, but I can't see the TV in the YouTube app's Cast list. My Chromecasts show up, but not the TV itself. Worked fine before I upgraded to Pie.

Looks like I spoke too soon. Just had an update for the YouTube app come through on my phone...and the issue is fixed! I can now see my smart TV in the cast list. ?
Yeah looks like the new YouTube update fixed this for me as well.
