Frequently Asked Questions - 2nd Generation Kindle Fires

Need help rooting Kindle Fire gen 2
(Another weekend.. another attempt!)
I have a Kindle Fire Gen 2
System Version: Current version 10.5.1
Serial number starts with D0026
OS: Windows 7
I have looked at this thread/post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2247493
And am trying to following this rooting tutorial:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075959
When I get to this step:
Step 1: Type this in the window, hitting enter after each line.
cd ..\..\Root
runme.bat
I get these results:
Code:
Device type:
0) New Z2 Root Method by cubeandcube (thanks man!)
1) 2014 root (thx jcase for nice pwn binary :) and xsacha for the exploit)
2) Xperia Root by cubeundcube
3) New Standard-Root (thx Ariel Berkman)
4) New Xperia Root by Goroh_kun (Xperia Z, Xperia V [JellyBean] ...)
5) Old
6) Old-Special (for example: Sony Tablet S, Medion Lifetab)
G) Google Glass Mode (thx Saurik for the ab file)
x) Unroot
Make a choice: 1
Exploit type:
0) xsacha Z2 Tablet Root
1) jcase Z1S Root (make sure to download the pwn binary first from XDA thread!)
Make a choice:
Please connect your device with enabled USB-Debugging ...
adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
and then it does nothing.
after a while.. I tried to quit, and got this:
Code:
Terminate batch job (Y/N)? n
Copy needed files ...
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
..........................
I have performed the Windows 7 mod here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36373627#post36373627
I have also verified the ADB drivers as mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117
"Once this driver has been properly installed you will see "Android Composite ADB Interface" under "Kindle Fire" in the Windows Device Manager which is located by Right Hand Mouse Click Computer, Choose Properties, then Devices or Device Manager. Expand the tree. Expand Kindle. This is where you will see "Android Composite ADB Interface"."
^^ which I do show/have in my Device Manager
Can anyone help me getting my Kindle Fire Gen 2 rooted? Or suggest something I may have overlooked/not done correctly?
thanks.

Indeed it does! Thank You! Take~Care!
For one I have yet to find any root on XDA or elsewhere that is working on the KF2 System Version 10.5.1 Be sure that you have Enable ADB in Settings > Security set to on. Also be sure you have Allow installation of Applications / From unknown Sources in Settings > Device set to on.
After that please enter the folder Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v36\stuff and open a command prompt - I use elevated cmd prompt in my context menu so all I need to do is right mouse click on the folder where I wish cmd prompt to open and select > Open command window here as Administrator.. If you wish you can download the .reg file to give you this option with instructions if needed here...
Code:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/47415-open-command-window-here-administrator.html
Once cmd prompt is open in that folder please type....
adb devices
You should see a message something like
List of devices attached
D026A0A0328601E8 device
If not I would UNinstall any drivers you have installed > Reboot > INstall the drivers linked below > reboot and try the above steps again...
Code:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/cizq7o8mwwqh9ji/Kindle_Fire2_ADB_Drivers.zip
If still no listed devices after opening cmd prompt > adb devices then I would check your factory cable maybe try another.
My apologies if this is to be no help. Take~Care!

ok.. well things are looking up! lol
* I am now getting a prompt when I connect the KF to the PC.. (so I can open up folders/directories..etc)
* I also now get a number back in the device list (adb device command suggested above) as well.
I tried the ROOT and QEMU steps above again.. and the device is now being somewhat responsive (as in rebooting when the screen says it will..etc)
most lines that say::
UNABLE TO CHMOD....
FAILED TO COPY FILE...
QEMU always ends with 'ROOTING FAILED!' message..
but at least its a start in the right direction!
@sd_shadow -
If RootKing approach is still recommended.. I have a some questions from quickly reading the link/overview.
* this can -not- be installed after install? (am I reading that correctly?)
* do I use the desktop or .apk approach?
* If .apk...this is done by transferring the file to my KF.. where does it get transferred to? (and how to 'run it')
thanks.

Cool on the looking up =) My apologies for butting in as obviously I'm not sd_shadow....
As I stated in my original post before the edit I have found nothing but kingroot that will work.
So honestly, before you root, unless you have a file manager / explorer already installed on your kindle, I would go to the amazon store on your kindle and download / install ES File Explorer. The one I was working on did not have one installed and it gave me issues due to not being able to locate and install the .apk's unless they were from the amazon store where it could auto-install after downloaded.
Code:
http://www.amazon.com/ES-Mobile-File-Explorer/dp/B008K6HN8I/ref=sr_1_1?s=mobile-apps&ie=UTF8&qid=1458374068&sr=1-1&keywords=es+file+explorer
No settings in ES File Explorer need to be messed with until after root and then I would change the settings to use the recycle bin, show hidden files, root explorer ( root explorer, when enabled will try to get root permission... Just allow it access when prompted ) and a few others, but the rest are simple and I am sure you can get it to your liking.
After ES File Explorer is installed then I would go to the bottom of the first post here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461
and download the attached KingRoot4.1-release-20150703-for-xda.apk if you downloaded with the kindle then just use ES file explorer to locate the KingRoot4.1-release-20150703-for-xda.apk , select it and it will install. Once installed, run the kingroot app.. it 'may' say there is not root for the device but run it anyway because it will root it.
Remember... No one twisted your arm on rooting your device.... You chose to do so and No damage is done to the device by rooting it.
After root then back to what I said earlier...

I don't always go back and look for edited posts
so if you add information/questions
please add a new post, even if it just says see edit
root king should work, and should be safe
I'm not sure what is meant by "cannot be installed after install" means?
yes, use desktop or apk
if using apk, allow unknown sources on Fire, download apk with Web browser on Fire, after downloading is complete click on download complete notification bar, there will be a install prompt

Hello
I stupidly bricked my kf2, I thought I could do it without a fastboot cable.
the guide I was following was https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_otter2
Got to step 6 no problems, kindle rebooted I missed what happened but it said something about having to wipe/format system then rebooted. now it just shows kindle logo for 5 seconds and then reboots and then again
I have ordered a cable after destroying 6 trying to make a fastboot one but going to be waiting weeks from china.
Anyways not the first device I have bricked and likely not the last, my question is what procedure should I follow when I do get it as I dont want to do more damage.
Thank you in advance

@rb2tfm - thanks!
@sd_shadow - thanks as well!
so to re-cap:
I have a fresh system restored KF Gen 2
I downloaded, and installed ES File Explorer.
I downloaded, and installed KingRoot (.apk file)..
When download was complete I ran KingRoot file....
Ran through some screens, had button saying TRY ROOT AGAIN.. I clicked it.. and waited until numbers were done counting..etc..
I walked away and came back to me being at the 'home' page... of the KF..
(page says to go to Google play and download root checker.. but I cant because when I go there is says browser (SILK) not supported)
If I load KingRoot again.. it shows home page with a count -down- from 100% and always seems to stop @ 56%? (Security Index/Checking running state...)
ES File Explorer settings have been changed to allow Root Exploring, Recycle Bin and Show Hidden Files as well..
At this point I'm not really clear what my next step is?
Go to this thread and try to install google play?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228539
My end goal here is to install the latest version of Android that I can on this device.. (or at least the latest that runs the best!)
Which 'ROM' is suggested for this step (once I get there?)
thanks!

@rb2tfm -
 @sd_shadow -
After a reboot of the device...
and running KingRoot again..
I got the message Root successful, share with friends?
and the Security Index now shows 100% (with text of running state.... under it still)
I'm guessing I'm rooted now? lol..
but really un-clear what my next step is?
thanks!

Bricked KF2 trying to install 2nd bootloader. It now turns on, shows the standard boot screen and immediately goes blank except for a white triangle in the middle with an exclamation point inside of it.
I can get it into fastboot mode with my factory cable, but I have no idea how to get it back to working condition.

Kindle Fire + Mac Guide

If you're like me, you have a Kindle Fire, but you would prefer to use it with a Mac than with a Windows computer. I'm writing up a guide on how to do numerous things such as rooting the Fire, but with a Mac.
Rooting
If you want to modify your device, the first thing to do is to root it. You can then install many apps that require root privileges, as well as install TWRP and FireFireFire Bootloader.
I use the utility Breakdroid, and it is easier to use than KindleFireUtility, the Windows counterpart, because it does not require you to install any drivers, it just works. Here is the website. Go to downloads to download the Breakdroid tool for Kindle Fire.
http://northmendo.com/breakdroid/ Feel free to donate to the guy who made this.
1. Download Breakdroid and mount the DMG file.
2. Make a folder on your desktop or applications folder called 'Breakdroid' and copy over all the files.
3. Open the Breakdroid application. It will open a terminal window. Use option 5 'Kindle Fire Tools' and hit return.
4. An icon will bounce on your dock. It may bounce for up to a minute. It will then ask you if you want to open this application downloaded from the web. Click ok.
5. It will then show a dialog warning you that this voids your warranty. If you are attempting this, you should know this already.
6. Now it opens another terminal window.
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
7. Type '1' and press enter. Follow prompts. Make sure you follow any instructions exactly. Follow all the steps until step 8. You can use step 9 to donate to the guy who made this. It is optional.
8. Finally you can use step 10 to quit the Kindle Fire tools.
9. FireFireFire has been installed as bootloader and you have rooted your device.
Recovery
You can use TWRP which has been installed by the previous guide to install ROMS, backup the current system and recover from any problems.
1. To access the TWRP recovery, shut down your kindle by holding down the power button until it shows a shut down dialog. Tap shut down.
2. Now turn the Fire on again. It will show a blue 'Kindle Fire' logo. This is the new FireFireFire bootloader which has been installed.
3. Keep your eye on the power button light. It should be green. Wait for it to flicker slightly. Or you can wait 2 seconds. Then press the power button again. It will show boot options.
4. Use the power button to cycle between the boot modes. Choose recovery to boot into recovery, then leave your Fire to boot.
5. Team Win logo will show, then the curtain will rise, showing a grid of buttons.
6. You have booted into recovery! Reboot without choosing recovery mode to get back to the normal system.
Install a ROM
1. Hook up your Fire with your Mac with a Micro-B USB cable. You can get them cheap on eBay, but mine broke after a few weeks, so feel free to find a more reliable vendor.
2. Download a ROM for your Fire. I'd recommend the GedeROM if you want an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM, or MoDaCo if you want a modified stock ROM with Google Play Store preinstalled.
3. Copy over the .zip file, placing on the Fire which has mounted on your desktop. Also copy over the gapps .zip if provided if you want the Google Apps package.
4. Eject the Fire and disconnect it from the Mac.
5. Use the previous guide to boot into Recovery.
6. Tap the Backup button and backup your system. This is very important, especially when installing your first ROM.
7. BACKUP YOUR CURRENT SYSTEM! For good measure.
8. Now tap the home button at the top right of the screen. Now tap Wipe, then tap Factory Reset. Then wipe Cache, then wipe Davlik Cache. Finally System Wipe. (Thanks to Thepooch for the best way to do this bit!)
9. This will wipe the device, so make sure you've Backed up your Fire! (See steps 6 and 7).
10. Now go back to the home screen using the home button and tap the install button.
11. Choose the ROM .zip file which you placed on the sdcard. I hope you named it something easy to remember and identify.
12. Tap install.
13. If it fails, restore from the backup you made (see how important backing up before wiping is?) and make sure your ROM you downloaded was downloaded properly. Also make sure it's the original zip file, not expanded or recompressed. Then repeat. If all else fails, try a different ROM or just stay with stock.
14. If it was successful, then go back to the home screen, and if you downloaded a gapps zip file, flash this as well, in the same manner as the ROM zip.
15. Reboot into system using the reboot button on the home screen.
16. Successful? If you don't like your ROM, you can always revert to stock using your backup, or install a new ROM following these steps.

great guide nice job really
Ok, I'll add that.
Yea, I'm just annoyed how little support there is for Macs so I wanted to show that it can be done
where can i get the link to the rom
I tried googling for the rom, and i downloaded the rom from MoDaCo, but when it finished downloaded, it's not written as .zip file.
I tried to place the entire folder in the sd card, but when go thru the TWRP recovery, of course, i couldnt find any .zip file.
Anybody can help?
This is a common problem. Open Safari, then press Command + (comma). This opens your preferences. Untick the option of automatically opening 'safe' files which is automatically unzipping your zip files. Now you can redownload the ROM and find the zip in your Downloads folder
some links to make this happen
Great info, will test much of it shortly. A few links that I found helpful and are ref'd above:
for the Google Apps package, Rootzwiki was helpful

and points to Jelly Bean universal apps:

Kudos to twa_priv for a start to that trail.
Also twa_priv has useful info here (not mac specific, check the changelog for udpates)

that also links to hashcode's kernel_omap (now over my skill set, but might be useful)

northmendo's breakdroid always worth mentioning, cuz you might need to start there:

Info yes, but links to all things downloadable were missing (except breakdroid), which is why I spent time documenting it.
nice job I`m sure that your research will help others
[EDIT 2] I've noticed that I am having an issue with charging since I installed the rom. It will only recognize the charger when the Kindle is turned on, and it charges VERY slow. Anyone have any insight to this? [EDIT 2]
[EDIT] Nevermind! The play store was included! This TOTALLY reinvented the Fire for me. [EDIT]
Thanks so much for this! Working on it now.
One question.. The site that I downloaded gede from didn't come with the GApps zip. I went searching, but it looks like there are many different versions. Could you please inform me of where to get the right one?
Thank you again. Very, very much!

This will NOT work on the new kindle, as although it looks similar, it is very different inside. You stand an extremely high chance of a permanent hard-brick for your kindle fire. DO NOT PROCEED.
Hello guys!
I've been trying to root my kindle fire... I follow all the steps 1 to 7. Step 8 from me return "Invalid option".
I have installed Root Explorer but when I try to move "vending" apk from /sdcard/Documents to /system/app I get the message: "Your phone doesn't appear to be rooted...."
I need to follow some additional steps?
My device version is 6.3.1
Regards!
Issue
Why is it that at step 1 i am stuck on "waiting for device" ?

Maybe you should go through the steps again? It shouldn't say "Invalid option" at all. Make sure you power off and power on the kindle fire in all the necessary steps.

Help!
Hey everyone,
I need your help. I rooted my Kindle Fire HD (7.2.3) with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074565. I now have 'SuperSU' and 'Root Check Basic' Applications on my Kindle Fire HD.
What I want is to have the 'Google Play Store' and the latest 'Jelly Bean' version. How can I do this? The other website shows me only the way with a PC but not with a Mac.
Thanks for all your responses!
Afaik you can't root the HD (correct me if I'm wrong but) you risk bricking your device.

Installing 9.6 drivers to root Kindle Fire

Hey there,
Long time lurker first time poster. Sorry I didn't post a hello thread, This forum has really helped me out with my Evo and Evo shift. I have never rooted them as I didn't have need. They served my purpose as is. Now I'm in new territory so I humbly ask you pros for help trying to root my Kindle Fire. The only reason I bought this was to turn it more into a tablet more like my phone.
I have seen and read just about everything I can find on installing the drivers and rooting this thing.
I have search here and found partial answers that end up turning into a different conversation and nothing has worked.
I'm on Win XP sp3 I am very computer savvy since I'm a software tester but I am stumped.
I set driver signing to ignore and I still get the unsigned error when trying to run install_drivers.bat.
You can't change the driver signing in the registry because it will just revert back.
When I plug it in to install it it shows up in the device manager as an Android phone with the Android Composite ADB Interface If I try and update the drivers it says the best driver is already installed.
I uninstall it and reinstall and point it to C:\Documents and Settings\Users\my profile name\KFU\Drivers\Kindle and it installs the same way as an android phone with the ADB interface below it.
Like I said. I have tried everything I have read and run.bat still shows as offline
Is the Android Composite ADB Interface mean the drivers are installed correctly?
I read one post someplace else that said if it said android phone to delete it.
Been at this for a week. Come home from work and spend hours trying over and over and there must be some bonehead thing I didn't do or a setting I didn't set correctly.
Please help
You can try a utility that I did for myself and others to root.
Basic Fire Utility[Expired]
Also goto %USERPROFILE%\.android and rename the file adb_usb.ini to adb_usb.ini.bk then rerun to driver install.
Also this should have been asked in the Kindle Fire Q&A.
Try this method:
http://www.jayceooi.com/2011/12/13/how-to-install-kindle-fire-adb-usb-driver/
.Sometimes kfu says that the boot status is unknown even though it is just fine. assuming u havnt Try one of the options and see if the fire responds.

Mods please move to the correct forum. It was a little confusing when I saw all the kindle forums.
Do you have a how to for the basic fire utility? Do I need to remove all of the KFU stuff from 9.6 first? Sorry, first root. I installed the driver and now the DM says android phone,Amazon Kindle Fire ADB Interface.
Thanks again
Since you have the drivers installed do selection 3 to install FFF 1.4a then select 4 to install TWRP 2.2.0. Selection 5 will root and put basic Google apps.
The Basic Fire Utility copies the root/ gapps flash file to your device sdcard directory then boots you into TWRP. From there you flash the file... Choose Install, scroll under folders until you see Gapps+Apps.zip file and select it then swipe the blue button to the right to flash.
Thats it. Select reboot System and you are now rooted.
Sorry I am not very good at the instruction part thats why I just kept it to myself. But If you have more questions please let me know.

I could not get this thing rooted. Tera Tike spent a lot of time walking me through it, but still nothing.
It would only boot into TWRP. He then offered to see if he could fix it for me if I sent it to him.
From all of our message interaction I didn't hesitate to send a new Kindle to a total stranger.
He had put so much time in trying to help me via messaging that I knew he was a good guy and I was right.
He fix it as soon as he got it. Had a corrupt partition. Most likely something stupid I did, and it's on it's way back ready to go.

Procedure given below:
1. First of all, you need Drivers For your symphony W25 (Smphony.W25/Karbonn.A7/Mobistar.S01/Ktouch.W650 All are the same phone)
Driver for winXP
Get them here (uploaded by prasad12ka4) Or Here uploaded by rainwalker

Click to collapse
Drivers for Win 7 / Win 8

Install them while connecting your phone on "USB debugging mode", and going to "device manager > other devices" on your pc. After installation disconnect the phone.
(I believe some of you are having problems installing the drivers. I recommend you install the drivers on a freshly installed winXP pc. I faced a lot of trouble doing it on my Win8 pc)
2. Download Android software development kit (SDK) from Here and install in pc. Default installation Directory should be C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk
3. Android SDK may need Java development kit (JDK) installed in pc. If you need jdk, go here or go to their Website to download
3. Download Fastboot From Android Central and keep it inside
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools folder
4. Download Clockwork Mod Recovery for w25 from Link #1 or Link #2, unzip and copy to the same folder. replace duplicate (if prompted).
5 hook your phone up with pc in USB debugging mode and go to C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools folder, Press Shift+right click inside that folder and select "open cmd window here". It opens a cmd window for that folder.
In the cmd window, type
Code:
adb devices
If the driver installations are correct, you'll see your device connected as w650 (as symphony is re-branded from k-touch w650)
6. Disconnect phone from pc and reboot it into the bootloader, by turning it off and holding [vol-up]+[power]
Till screen turns green and says fastboot:recovery ?, Like below
7. Plug your phone into your computer. On cmd window, type:
Code:
fastboot devices
Reply should be "???????????? fastboot" Meanng fastboot detected the device.
8. In the cmd line, type
Code:
fastboot boot recovery-english.img
And that's it. You'll have booted into the custom recovery (cwmr), and from there you can do a full backup, or restore a backup, or wipe the phone. Use vol up/down to navigate through screen and Power to select an item.
9. Use CWMr to backup your ROM. (It will be saved in: "SD card/clockwork mod/backup" on phone.) and reboot. Copy the backup into pc for further use.
Step 8 was to make sure cwmr works on the phone. It's a temporary port of cwmr on your device.
if problem occurs (less likely to occur), let us know in a comment and don't proceed further.
Otherwise, Proceed below for permanent port..
10. Repeat step 6 and 7. Go to C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools folder and click on recovery.bat file. Click on it and in the next window, Press any key
Permanent port will be completed
reboot phone if not rebooted automatically.
11. To check cwmr, Repeat step 6 but keep pressing the two buttons even if the screen turns green (fastboot). Continue until.....
screen is red (recovery). after that you'll see Clockwork mod recovery page.
You'll need it to restore your original rom if you mess up anything.
12 In CWMr,
a)]Go to Advanced
b) Choose "Wipe dalvik-cache"
c) Now go to "Mounts & Storage"
d) Choose "Format /cache"
e) Shutdown your phone
13. Download and unzip bootrepack from this post (by jason_cheng). Copy the "boot.img" file from "rootrepack" folder and paste to C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools folder
14. Repeat steps 6 & 7 (green screen)
15. In cmd window type
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
and
Code:
fastboot reboot
see image below if you have any confusion.
16. After the phone is restarted, type in cmd window:
Code:
adb shell id
which should result "uid=0(root) gid=0(root)"
Rooting is now Unofficially completed
17. To verify, Type each line in cmd window, and press enter
Code:
adb shell
Code:
echo "1" > /system/pwned
Code:
cat /system/pwned
If the Reply to the last line is "1", Congrats ! you have root access to your phone!!
Now remove that test file you created just now. Type:
Code:
rm /system/pwned
What now?
18. Install "Superuser" from Play store
It does not come with su binary. For that, Go to this post and download only the attachment. Unzip it and put the files in C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools folder.
19. Now open cmd window, type each line and enter.
Code:
adb remount
Code:
adb push su /system/xbin/su
Code:
adb shell
Code:
chmod 4755 /system/xbin/su
now open superuser and check for su binary. I don't recommend su update.
20. Install "Busybox free" from Play store (optional)
Rooting Officially Complete.

ICS Search Key to Power Key (for Symphony W25)
vinodkbishnoi said:
Hi,
Karbonn A7 ICS. Now you can use search key of your A7 as power key.
Follow the procedure...
1. Download 7x27a_kp.kl.zip file and extract it.
2. Open terminal/Command prompt.
3. Connect your phone to PC via USB.
4. Run following commands.
c:/> adb devices
c:/> adb pull /system/usr/keylayout/7x27a_kp.kl
now copy this file on a safe place. So that if anything goes wrong you could be able to restore it.
now open folder where you have extracted the zip file. The extracted file will be of same name as "7x27a_kp.kl"
c:/> adb push <path to file 7x27a_kp.kl> /system/usr/keylayout/
Now reboot your phone. You will be able to use your search key as power key.

Change partition size on A7/W25
Part1:
Anil_Sharma said:
To begin with, you need a hex editor, HxD - Freeware Hex Editor is a great editor and it is very small(less than an MB). Then you need a baseband to edit, you need to locate the file named ' appsboot.mbn '.
That file contains the partition tables, remember this tutorial is about editing the partition tables not extending your physical memory.
So, lets get cracking. Open HxD from programs and open the appsboot.mbn file, now press F3 and search for ' cache ' and press F3 until you see something like this
.
As you can see the highlighted section of the picture
,
there are a few repetitions of ' F0 F0 F0 F0 xx ' multiple times, you are concerned with only the first two /system and /cache partitions respectively.
Remember, you don't need to specify the partition size for /data as it is done automatically when you flash the baseband.
Now back to the hex editing part, once you've decided how much space(in MBs only) you wanna allocate to /system and /cache use this link to Convert hex/dec and select the two digits after the F0 F0 F0 F0 like in this pic
and type the hex number for example in the screenshot B4 in hex equals 180 in decimal, which means /system is allocated 180 MB of space and do the same with Cache, I would recommend allocating 10 MB to it as you hardly ever use it. Then flash the baseband like you normally do through Fastboot.
If you have any doubts ask me and I will do my best to clear things to you. Click Thanks if I helped you, doesn't cost anything

Hi,
I am attaching a file named "appsboot.mbn". This is used to determine partition size on android system.
There are two ways you could use it.
1. Replace appsboot.mbn file in any baseband update BP folder.
2. If you are handy with fastboot commands there is very simple method. Just boot your phone in fastboot mode (green screen mode) and use
following command....
C:\>fastboot flash APPSBL <path to appsboot.mbn>
And you are done.
You will find following changes.
1. Your partition size will be as shown in screenshot.
2. When you run command adb devices you will no more find S01 there, it will be A7
Download file here...

Your phone is the same with mobiistar s01 and karbonn a7, maybe the developer of symphony keep the original cpu clock(1ghz) and s01, a7 was underclocked to 800 to save battery. Now if you want to root.you must install fastboot driver and install cwm recovery for a7 first.then backup your current rom... when done, install rooted rom for s01 and you will have root, but your cpu will be underclocked to 800ghz.
And can you send me the link to download your backup rom??? I need the 1ghz kernel to mod my rom... thanks.
(If install drivers on w7 pc fail, try to use another pc with wXP-32bit).
These phones aren't - or shouldn't be - that difficult to root. I have just rooted an Xplorer W10 from W7 x64 (and reproduced on Linux), and it went without a hitch. Just a number of gotchas to watch out for (from here on I actually refer to W10 and all other models since they are of the same series):
1. Uninstall any kind of driver you have installed. Symphony does not provide drivers for their Android phones, as far as the website is concerned. You get what you pay for, and this is a relatively remote brand, so don't expect much. In fact, don't expect anything at all.
2. Download and run SuperOneClick. Click on the other tab and choose to check for drivers. You should be prompted to install a driver. Do it.
3. Unplug and replug the USB. Go into the ADB folder and shift-right-click, open a command prompt here. Type 'adb devices' and press ENTER. There should be at least one device listed (in the form of an alphanumeric serial).
4. If there is no device listed by ADB, use Linux to root. There is no need to install any driver on Linux, and SuperOneClick is multi-platform. You will need the mono package on Linux instead of .NET.
5. The phone is actually partially rooted. Whether by intention or by mistake, I am not sure. SuperOneClick will warn of this, so just choose to continue with the rooting process.
6. You should now be rooted.
Background:
There is no exotic bootloader locking going on with these phones, as far as I can tell. The manufacturers/vendors are really just trying to capture a certain segment of the market, so I doubt they'd go through extensive efforts to lock you in. Just find any exploit (right now psneuter and zergRush), put them on the phone along with the su and busybox binaries, execute the exploit, and you'll be good to go with the Superuser app.
ok ...

I guess this process in not for me
can you provide link or tell me the process on how to add cwm recovery and backup the stock rom from the phone?
So that I can upload for you guys to check it out.
Note: my phone goes to recovery mode using the same method described in Karbonn Mobile A5 & A7 (Android 2.3.6
I checked.

Unfortunately, CWMR needs to be built for your hardware in order for it to work. I think CWMR for the Karbonn should work without modification if it has the same hardware, so see if you can find info on getting CWMR onto the Karbonn. If the bootloader is really locked then you'll have to find some way to unlock first.
Backup the recovery partition [1] before doing anything, although I cannot verify whether it's the same partition across all phones. If anything goes wrong you will lose the ability to boot into recovery mode, but your phone will work. With a backup of the partition you can just bit-copy and rewrite the partition exactly as it was.
Because you already have the drivers installed using SuperOneClick, you may like to see now if Unlock Root works [2]. Else, go ahead and root the phone using the manual method. First, run the exploit [3]. Tell us how this goes, then we'll continue (basically upload the su binary and optionally the Superuser app). Otherwise we need to see what other exploit works.

Could you please also report back with some files after running the following commands (you will find them prefixed with w25_ from the folder you're running ADB):
Code:
adb shell cat /proc/cpuinfo > w25_cpuinfo.txt
adb shell getprop > w25_propinfo.txt
Thanks. I suspect the W25 does not have the Karbonn A7 hardware. If the Karbonn is a rebranded Mobilstar S01 then it has a Qualcomm ARMv7 processor. The Symphony phones (hypothesis based on the only one phone I have, that is a W10) are rebranded Tinno [1] phones, with MediaTek processors.
My W10 is ARMv6, so it depends on whether the W25 has an SoC based on the latest MTK proc (which is ARMv7) [2]. That is highly unlikely because it (the proc) would be too powerful for the model number. As you may or may not know, binaries are not portable across ARM cores.
The phones do indeed have the same chassis and general specs, but any attempt to port and/or copy files/ROMs must be taken with great care and precautionary steps. There is, of course, no rule that each model must depend on the same manufacturer, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Well, popular devices have more people tinkering with them and hence more results I suppose for budget devices we are on our own. After all, I believe these phones are pretty value for money and the effort to tinker is worth it.
Anyway, my suspicions are wrong. Symphony (or whoever they rely on) hand-pick reference models and do not depend on any particular vendor. The W25 is ARMv7 from Qualcomm, rebranded from K-Touch W650 [1] with modest hardware upgrades, almost similar to the Mobiistar and Karbonn:
Mobiistar Touch S01: Qualcomm MSM7225A
Symphony Xplorer W25: MSM7627A or MSM7625a (but because of 1GHz clock more likely the former) [2]
Either way the differences are minor I presume. Clock speeds are different and on-chip options vary slightly depending on what the manufacturer opts for. So with a bit of work someone could port existing recoveries and ROMs from similar devices. See [2] for a list of such devices in the respective row for MSM7627A.
You can worry about this when you come to recovery. The first hurdle to get through is root, so have you proceeded to run an exploit?
Also, if you haven't done anything, I would suggest doing a factory reset and then backing up the entire ROM simply with the cat command [3]. The homemade unsigned backup may come in handy later as there is no official ROM update.

Not sure how to use these commands. It says that the phone needs to be rooted to use these.
I'm trying to install clockworkmod.
meanwhile, If you have time, plz provide a simplified tutorial.
The zergrush in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296916 doesn't download btw
Sorry, yes, that needs root. You must do everything you can to get root on the phone, because whatever you do you must have a backup. For CWMR, you must back up your recovery partition, else if your CWMR image does not happen to be compatible with your device you risk losing recovery mode.
For MTK devices like the W10, there is a method for non-rooted phones to carry out the backup [1], but I'm not sure about Qualcomm. So in the end, root is unavoidable.
1. Just get zergrush binary from the SuperOneClick archive (it is in another folder along with psneuter).
2. Copy the zergrush binary to the ADB folder.
3. Open a cmd window in the ADB folder just as you would normally type adb commands, then:
Code:
adb push zergrush /data/local/tmp/
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/zergrush
adb shell /data/local/tmp/zergrush
Report back with the output.

I have the same phone It's original model is ktouch w650
i evem tried to use update.zip method but it says sd storage not found
how do i know if my bootloder is unlocked or locked
tried unlock root with driver installed it says failed to aquire root access\
in adb shell it shows $ sign and if i try to get root acess it says acess denied
Oh boy, it looks like the vulnerability has been patched in your version of Android. Either that, or there is some hardware peculiarity (buffer size being reported wrongly - that's also when this zergrush error comes up) which I do not yet know how to deal with. There is another exploit called 'tacoroot' but I do not prefer going that route as it's not as foolproof/universal as zergrush.
Update zips need to be signed. When your recovery tries to verify the signature it fails, as it is not the signature of the manufacturer that made the update.zip.
Have you guys tried ALL the rooting methods posted in the A5/A7 thread? In the meantime I'll take a look at how Qualcomm ROMs can be dumped.
edit: I'm pretty sure your device has a fastboot mode. If so, you can "hot" boot any cwmr image without flashing it using "fastboot boot theimage.img" as far as I can recall. Having fastboot is a blessing (which the MTK devices do not have) so follow the first few pages of the A7 thread.
thanks
thanks for your hard work....

Sorry, the W10 is my first ever experience with Android (I was looking for a cheap way to find out how the stuff works), and as it does not even have a bootloader mode I have no idea about fastboot. I have only been with this phone/Android for about a month, so there's still a lot more to learn.
But as far as I can tell "AP Fastboot" already implies that you are in fastboot mode. You need the fastboot drivers installed on your PC, and then when you are at the green screen the phone will accept fastboot commands. [1]
If you guys manage to do this, what I would suggest is hot-loading a Karbonn A7, Mobiistar S01 or any other potential compatible CWMR image, then immediately making a full ROM backup. You can then upload recovery.img and I'll see if I can port it, and after that boot.img so we can at least get you root adb shell if by then rooting is still a problem.
And btw, if it was not clear in my previous post, rooting using current "standard" methods is not going to work as the latest gingerbread vulnerability (which zergrush exploits and many of the tools use zergrush) has been patched since December 2011. Unfortunately, it looks like the build of 2.3.6 that the W25 has is from a period after that, so zergrush on the W25 is a no-go. If you want to try, just follow the adb steps above which was posted for ahmed.zunaid.

Reverting back to Fire OS from CM11

Hello All!
I decided to install CM 11 a few days ago and then thought I'd like to go back to Fire OS. I followed the instructions as much as I could from the thread on here to revert back but I have ran into a problem. I could only get 4.6.1 installed but obviously, 4.6.3 is out and my phone can see it's there to download (and it does (try to) download - every time I restart my phone). When the download finishes the phone says there is an error and it can't update but then I can search for the update and so on. I have tried doing it the way Amazon suggest from my PC but to no avail.
I can only assume that this has something to do with the fact I went from 4.6.3 to CM 11 and then back to 4.6.1 and the phones still sees itself has partially being on 4.6.3?
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks

That means you downloaded the 4.6.3 BIN image and tried sideloading it via ADB?
If not, take a look at this (scroll down to the paragraph "Recovery / Sideload Factory Images")
I think OTA update is useless at this point but using the Amazon stock recovery is very reliable, I used it many times in the beginning for testing purposes.
Just give us some details when you encounter problems, e.g. driver missing when connected to PC, etc. ... and don't forget your backup for important apps & app settings.
I tried doing this before and the CMD does not show as any devices being connected. I have it in debugging mode and plugged it in but Windows did not see it even though the phone shows as being connected. Also, just in case I tried using the command you send and it just says "* cannot read 'update.bin' *".
You have the phone connected while booted up in Fire OS OR booted up in recovery mode like the guide suggests?
Sounds like you're missing ADB drivers / Windows failed to change the drivers when phone is connected in ADB recovery mode. Indicators:
• Windows did not "see" the phone
• The command line in CMD doesn't work without proper ADB configuration
If you boot up your phone in recovery mode / ADB mode, you will need additional ADB device drivers for your Windows system.
The regular (Amazon / Kindle) USB driver that is used when you connect your phone to the PC won't work, it's simply not the same method.
That's why your phone "disappears" as soon as you (re)boot into recovery / ADB sideload mode.
Open your "device manager" (assuming, you're using Windows as your main OS) and check for your device with missing drivers.

Try this tool (& driver) ADB, Fastboot and Drivers
Maybe you need to manually check for the "new" device and update the drivers:
Open the device manager while your phone is connected in recovery mode.
Look for its entry in the device list.
Remove it (Deinstall it).
Then "scan for hardware changes":
The device should appear in list the again, it will install the needed driver automatically (best case scenario)
or
you will have to update the device drivers manually:
You can even use (old) "Google USB drivers", I successfully tested google drivers from 2010 on Win 7 x64 with this phone in ADB mode.
If everything worked as planned, it should look like this: next to your device name, it will say "sideload":
It seems that on Windows 10 it works/looks different. I updated the driver that was suggested but I had another one which also needed updating which I have just done and appears to now let the cmd see the device properly and also allowing me to sideload.
Device manager does not see it as an Android device but as a Samsung device. Not sure why this is unless the device drivers used were Samsung ones but I guess that is irrelevant now. I will post my results once the update has finished.
Also, thanks for the help with this. Your information did help and with a bit of tweaking, it appears to have worked.
Thanks for mentioning so early that you use Windows 10, that makes it so much easier for me.
Nah, but it looks like you will be good from here on out...
Btw. by sideloading the image, it will erase "everything" on your device, so you get clean system without leftovers, just like you hoped for.

Hi, Bingo Bronson, thank you for your reply. What I downloaded from the link in your original post is a WinRAR ZIP archive. When I open it, there are multiple file and folders in there. Thanks again, Bingo Bronson. I figured it out. The bin file has to be in the same directory as the adb file, otherwise adb cannot find the bin file therefore cannot read it. I have successfully sideloaded 4.6.5 following your post. Thank you!

ADB & Fastboot
Before doing most things mentioned below you will need "adb" and "fastboot" installed. Two of your options are to install the Android SDK Tools or the Minimal ADB and Fastboot tool. If you are somewhat new to this I highly recommend the second one. Go here, download the latest version (1.3.1 as of this writing), and install it. When setup is complete you should have an icon for the Minimal ADB and Fastboot tool.
Note: I highly recommend you add "C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot" to your PATH variable in Windows. This way you can open a Command Prompt anywhere and use adb or fastboot.
Drivers
I recently setup a 5th gen Kindle Fire 7" tablet on my Windows 10 desktop. Because the BLU Life One X 2016 and the Kindle Fire are similar enough it just worked. To use the Amazon drivers you can find them on this page: https://developer.amazon.com/public...etting-up-your-kindle-fire-tablet-for-testing. The direct link is https://s3.amazonaws.com/android-sdk-manager/redist/kindle_fire_usb_driver.zip. Extract the zip file and then run KindleDrivers.exe.
Unlock Bootloader, Install Custom Recovery, and Install Root
Note #1: All credit for this guide goes to manos78's post for rooting the Wiko Fever!!! You can check it out here.
Note #2: I use Windows 10 on every PC I own. I assume Windows 7 and 8 should work just fine but cannot test that.
Note #3: The following assumes you have setup ADB and the proper drivers before beginning. I will try to detail that at a future time.
Note #4: Your phone will be completely erased. If there is anything you want to save do so beforehand.
1) Unlock Bootloader
Power on the phone and skip through all of the setup options
Go to Settings -> About device
Tap Build number five times to enable Developer options
Go to Settings -> Developer options
Enable OEM unlocking
Enable USB debugging
Plug the phone in to your PC and authorize it
Open a Command Prompt
Type adb reboot-bootloader
The phone should reboot and in a very tiny font at the bottom you should see => FASTBOOT mode
Type fastboot devices to verify that your PC sees it correctly
Type fastboot oem unlock
Press Volume Up to say Yes and wait for this to finish
Type fastboot getvar all and look for (bootloader) unlocked: yes
Type fastboot reboot
You should see your phone reboot a couple times as it erases the phone
2) Install Custom Recovery
Note #1: We will flash a version of CWM or TWRP that was built for a Wiko Fever as they appear to be fully compatible with the BLU Life One X 2016. Go to this thread and download the latest CWM (http://www.sendspace.com/file/4g87bj) or TWRP (http://www.sendspace.com/file/y4jel8). Extract the img file. Again, many thanks to manos78 for CWM and hanuma for TWRP!!!
Power on the phone
You can configure your phone now or just skip through all of the setup options and do that later
Go to Settings -> About device
Tap Build number five times to enable Developer options
Go to Settings -> Developer options
Enable OEM unlocking
Enable USB debugging
Plug the phone in to your PC and authorize it
Open a Command Prompt to wherever you extracted the .img file
Type adb reboot-bootloader
The phone should reboot and in a very tiny font at the bottom you should see => FASTBOOT mode
Type fastboot devices to verify that your PC sees it correctly
For CWM type fastboot flash recovery recovery-custom-wiko-fever.img or for TWRP type fastboot flash recovery TWRP_WikoFever_2.8.7.0.img
Type fastboot reboot
Note: If your phone does not reboot then just hold the power button until it turns off. Hold the power button again until it turns back on.
3) Install Root
Note: While there are newer beta versions of the SuperSU app I am not sure if they will work properly on our stock rom. You can test one of those out and report back but I would recommend you do a full backup beforehand.
Download BETA-SuperSU-v2.52.zip and save it to the phone's internal memory or an inserted microSD card
Plug the phone in to your PC
Open a Command Prompt
Type adb reboot recovery
You should now be in CWM. Go to Install zip, find BETA-SuperSU-v2.52.zip, and install it
When it finishes go to Go Back -> Reboot Phone -> No
Once the phone boots up launch SuperSU and configure it as you like
Xposed
Download the latest version of Xposed for sdk22 and arm64 from here. As of this writing it is xposed-v79-sdk22-arm64.zip. Also download XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk and xposed-uninstaller-20150831-arm64.zip (just in case).
Reboot into CWM or TWRP and do a full backup
Install xposed-v79-sdk22-arm64.zip and then reboot
Cross your fingers and hopefully your phone will start properly. Mine rebooted like five times during the "Android is starting" step but finally finished.
Once your phone boots up install XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk
ViPER4Android
ViPER4Android adds audio effects to your Android device and is beloved by many. First we will install SELinuxModeChanger and then ViPER4Android. Special thanks to Tha Watcher for his original write-up here.
1) SELinuxModeChanger
Go to the SELinuxModeChanger page on F-Droid, download the latest version (3.2 as of this writing) or use this direct link, and save it to your Desktop
Launch Minimal ADB and Fastboot and type adb install %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\com.mrbimc.selinux_42.apk
On the phone you may see a prompt saying Installation Blocked. If so, click the little triangle and tap Install anyway (unsafe). If you see a failure just do it again and it should work.
Launch the SELinuxModeChanger app on your phone, grant it root permissions, and click Permissive
Note: If you have any issues with SELinuxModeChanger then head over to the XDA thread.
2) ViPER4Android
Download the latest version in zip format from here and extract ViPER4Android_FX_A4.x.apk to your Desktop
Launch Minimal ADB and Fastboot and type adb install %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\ViPER4Android_FX_A4.x.apk
Launch the ViPER4Android app on your phone, click Yes when prompted, click Super Audio Quality, and then click OK
Grant root access when prompted

Reboot your phone
Note: Once your phone reboots you can start configuring ViPER4Android. I cannot really help much with that but feel free to look over the official XDA thread or their Settings Explained page on the official website.
Engineering Mode
Note: If I were you I would not change anything unless you absolutely know what you are doing!
I cannot seem to get the phone codes to work. You can install the MTK Engineering Mode app from the Google Play Store.

Q: How can I tell if my model is the BLU Life One X 2016?
A: Go here and see if it is the same model.
Q: When I try to use adb root I get the following error: adbd cannot run as root in production builds
A: You can purchase and install [root] adbd Insecure by Chainfire. Once installed, launch the app, grant it root access, and then check Enable insecure adbd and Enable at boot
Q: How do I (re)mount /system as read-write?
A: Install [root] adbd Insecure as mentioned above, open a Command Prompt, type adb root, and then adb remount rw
Q: How can I disable the audio that plays when starting up or shutting down my phone?
A: Using a file explorer with root access, or an adb shell, delete or rename (with .bak at the end) /system/media/bootaudio.mp3 and /system/media/shutaudio.mp3 and then reboot your phone.

Have you tried porting the Elephone rom for the Blu? They both have a MT6753, so from what I understand from reading on XDA it might work. You might need to make changes suggested at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701283.
Has anyone been brave enough to try this yet?

I'm receiving my phone tomorrow so i might be the guinea pig...lol
Did this last night on my phone. Most difficult part for myself was finding the correct drivers as this is my first mediatek device. Ended up being my fifth attempt that had the correct set.
After I had the drivers it was extremely similar to a nexus process.
Do you have a link to the drivers

I must inform you that I am still running good ol' Windows 7 so there's that.
All credit on my end comes from [Tutorial] Flash/Root/update elephone P8000 by vetkak and the first step with the link. Its not a real link, but a copy and past of the mega.co link had the proper drivers.
If you're on Windows 10 there is a separate thread out there somewhere with instructions for that.
OK thanks

I feel like it needs mention that after flashing the recovery (I used the TWRP flavor) that after the fastboot command you need to immediately power off the phone, instead of rebooting, then do the volume up + power button press to get to the custom recovery.

Unfortunately the guy that was bringing up the elephone p8000 has sold it and subsequently not be supporting it any longer. I'm happy enough there is custom recovery options and root. An AOSP ROM would be nice, but naturally the custom gestures would be lost.

I did but from the original Wiko Fever thread instructions. I did this a couple of weeks before he actually posted this thread and I made my own instructions that I think are clearer and more concise than the Wiko thread; however, rogersa2k's guide is pretty thorough and easy to understand besides the following correction....
The fastboot reboot after flashing the custom recovery doesn't yield the same results, because when I did that it did NOT work! I corrected it by help from a comment by member yrude (and as hottcakes mentions above) and made my own instructions with the addition of adding the installation for Viper4Android. But I hesitate to post it on XDA as I don't want to step on any toes. However, I did post it on Google+, Amazon and GSMarena. If people want this alternate guide and notify me to post it, then I will. Otherwise, I'll keep it off XDA.

I was trying to using the link to download the driver, but the mega site asked for "decryption key" before I can download. Is there a key available to share? Thanks,

Pls post yours here. I saw your Amazon comment and tried to follow it. Everything seemed to work till I run "fastboot oem unlock" then the PC just displays "Waiting for device response...." and my BLOX never showed any response on screen. I suspected that I did not have the driver for this particular type cellphone device. Thanks,

I appreciate that but the only way I'd post it in this thread is if the OP says it's fine. I do not like hijacking or taking over other people's threads.
It sounds like ADB is actually not loaded or working on your computer or otherwise you wouldn't get that message. I could be wrong, though. To test to see if it is indeed working and drivers are properly loaded, what does it respond when you type: adb devices

Not yet, but I do plan to try to start with that. It's nice that Elephone released the source code for the P8000 so that could help as well. If I ever get to this I will need lots of help.

Everything that *I* post in the OP will be something that I tested on my own device first unless I specifically mention otherwise.

I will add a note about that but some of us had issues so I chose the alternate method that has worked for me the first time every time.
