Fingerprint-only unlock working if using lock widget with root (updated for Nougat) - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

--ORIGINAL POST AND TITLE--
Title: Fingerprint only unlock not working if using lock widget
I'm using the app called Power Toggles, and when I lock my phone with the toggle, it will ask for my password pattern when I try to unlock with my fingerprint. If I use the power button to lock, the fingerprint unlock works fine.
--UPDATE (Marshmallow)--
Since I rooted, I can unlock my phone using my fingerprint when locking it using the below methods. Interested to hear from others, and I can update this list. Looks like a few on Nexus 6P have had issues, but let me know if you've tested on 5x, 6P, or both.
To be added to the list, you have to be able to lock the screen using the method listed. It has to be a true lock, not a short dimming of the screen like a few widgets do.
Phone state when tested: Stock OS, systemless root, custom kernel (Franco).
- Nova launcher gestures (e.g. double-tap to turn screen off) - 5x
- Power Toggles app - 5x
--UPDATE (Nougat)--
Phone state is stock OS, systemless root, Franco kernel.
Working:
- Nova launcher gestures (e.g. double-tap to turn screen off)
- Tasker "keyevent 26" command. Using this with a custom Power Toggles tile works, but there is a noticeable delay between pushing the button and the screen turning off. The delay varies.
Not working:
- Power Toggles. The native screen-off function requires a pattern/PIN/etc. to unlock. There is a feature that allows you to create a custom tile that links to Nova's double-tap function, but there's a bug that causes the app to crash when you try adding that button.

Yup, just tested and getting the same result.

Yep noticed that within the first hour when using Screen Off app.. I used a double tap Nova gesture to trigger the app and turn the screen off but using the fingerprint reader to unlock, it asks for the PIN/Pattern anyway
very annoying

Evidently something in Android causes those apps to "force" it to the lock screen. On prior devices without the finger print scanner, using those apps would always trump any sort of screen lock timer (like if you have it set to go off, but not lock until 5 minutes later, so you would do a regular swipe to unlock).
I don't have mine yet but know that will annoy me as I use that all the time.

I've tried a variety of screen off apps and they all do the same thing you are experiencing. Looks like it will take an app update from someone who has access to one of these phones.

Is it interfering with the fingerprint auth for Android Pay? If not, it may be just what I'm looking for. I want to use Pay, but I don't want my finger to unlock the phone, and I can't seem to find any way to limit what Imprint controls.

Doesn't interfere with Android Pay.

If rooted... Setup a Tasker task that uses the Secure Settings plugin to run command 'input keyevent 26' as root. Create a widget pointing to the task. Fingerprint/Imprint then unlocks phone as expected.

I tried this but it doesn't lock the screen, it just turns it off (at least on my Nexus 6P).

Do you have "Power button instantly locks" enabled in your security settings? "Input keyevent 26" is functionally identical to pressing the power button.

You are probably correct, yes I do have that set but it appears that smart lock overrides that ?

This has been my experience as well and it sucks because I was looking forward to never having to use the power button or put in a code with the n5x. I am hoping for this to be fixed somehow.

Works well - thanks for the spot.

An app called Gravity Screen works, can be set to screen off and lock when placed faced up on a table or a double Tap from home screen to activate short cut "persistent off"
Smart Lock Support in more settings in Gravity Lock needs to be enabled.

I suspected do not using unstock fingerprint app

Guys try this attached apk. This was made with the AutoInput Tasker plugin to emulate the power button press.

[Q] Torch on h/w button

I have an unrooted, locked, stock KitKat Z1c.
Is there a hack / mod that allows me to use a h/w button (like longpress on power or similar) to engage the torch without powering on the phone?
My old HTC used to do this, but I think it was a modification supplied by the Viper ROM. So, is this something that requires a completely different kernel/ROM or is an app sufficient?
You can do it with Xposed and GravityBox mod. But root is required for Xposed
OK, thanks a bunch!
I just checked now, you have to power on the screen first though.
I will look into it once I am rooted. I am sure I can find a way to make it work sufficiently for me
I think I know and understand what your requirements are, and I also was wondering the same thing.
A flashlight/torch is handy when you need it, and you don't want to have to unlock the phone one handed in the dark, when you need the torch the most, right?
The solution working best for me at the moment is using a flashlight widget on the lock screen. Not only that, re-order the widget so that, instead of getting the clock widget when pressing power, you get the flashlight widget placed in the middle, thus the default.
I don't use password or pattern lock on my phone, just the swipe to unlock.
Gravitybox (an xposed module) let's you hold volume down to activate the torch with the screen off or on the lockscreen.

Thanks again to the folks who replied. Now after rooting and digging into Xposed I have also found a dedicated module (called Xposed Torch). Gravitybox can also do it indeed, but only from lockscreen. The other one can fire it up on long press of h/w button without even powering on the screen, this is what I was looking for.

lol, I did, see post #2
Using an app called Torchie, just press both 'volume buttons' together to turn on/off torch anytime. It runs as a background service and just works anytime, even when screen off (if enabled from Torchie Settings). It kinda make your phone feel like a conventional battery operated torch. No root required.

Fingerprint for screen lock

Any option to lock screen with fingerprint?
only to make sure I understood you right:
You want to lock your Screen by pressing your fingerprint at the sensor?
So it's the opposite of the normal use?

i'm pretty sure it's meant as additional functionality. touch to wake/unlock as usual, touch again to re-lock the phone. this way you could completely avoid using the power button, apart from actually powering the phone. i imagine that behaviour would come in quite handy, especially if you just quickly want to check it for notifications/time and could avoid the at times awkward 'touch to unlock -> adjust grip -> press power button' order with 'touch -> touch again'.
nothing huge, honestly feels like an oversight to me, that there isn't an option for something like this.

Yap, just as you said, It's meant like add, func. to lock screen like unlock.
Instead of DT2lock with "lock screen app" It would be very handy to lock with FP ...
I think a reason why that was excluded as a feature is because you naturally place your index finger there while talking. It would end up locking your phone accidentally more often. It's like the dimple on the back of the Motos.

i personally haven't experienced a single task during which my finger(tip) lays on top of the sensor, apart from unlocking of course. also there would always be the option of implementing a toggle for an additional functionality like this, the 'double-tap power for camera' feature is a great example for this.

turn screen off widget?

On my m7 (I used ported m9 rom) there was a widget called screen lock that was simply turning (and locking) screen off so I did not have to inconvenience myself by pressing power button.
Now I have HTC 10 and cannot find anything like this. I even I tried few different apps from Google Play but none of them worked OK with finger print scanner.
Is this just me being blind and stupid or there is no such a widget for HTC 10?
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA-Developers mobile app
might want to try the elemental X or elite kernels, they both have swipe2sleep. you swipe certain area of screen and it shuts down the screen
cleanslate kernel has double tap fingerprint to shut down screen
You can also remap capacitive keys to perform various functions flashing Xposed framework and GravityBox. I mapped my 'back' key to put my phone to sleep with a long press.

The 10 has double tap to sleep built in, is that not enough?
Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk
Double tap to sleep works only from locked screen? Tried double tap on free space on my home screen and nothing happens. At least on my phone. So it not enough. In fact I think it's completely useless as I would have to lock screen first then double tap to turn screen off. Or am I misunderstanding something?
I do not want to root or flash custom rom, not yet at least. I was hoping there is going to be less "invasive" way to do it.

Coming from the M9 here, they allowed you to configure the 4th button to lock the screen. The screen lock widget works for me, but the unlock was strange (don't recall how), so I stopped using it. Now I just set it for 15 second timeout and it locks itself.
One of the few things I don't like about the 10. The other is that I can't configure the "quick keys" that swipe down from the top of the screen.
I use both Nova launcher gesture, and greenify widget to turn screen off, but, you can't use fingerprint scanner to unlock, you need to unlock using pin/pattern

You can, if you are rooted and have Tasker or a similar app installed.
You just set up the Nova gesture to run the Tasker shell command (with root privileges):
Code:
input keyevent 26
I have double tap to sleep and a long press of the home button to sleep set up. I only have to use my fingerprint to wake and unlock the device.
Theres one app that can achieve this without root on stock rom. Its called Screen Lock Pro. Its the only app i found that supports smart lock on marshmallow.
What that means? On all other screen off and lock apps ive tried i had to enter my pin instead of being able to use my fingerprint to unlock. The reader was locked every time. With Screen Lock Pro and the option "Smart lock and Nexus imprint" in settings activated i can turn off my 10 with a tap on an icon (homescreen) OR by pressing and holding the home button (i replaced google now on tap with Screen Lock Pro).
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro&hl=de
Sadly its not for free, but you can try out the app and return it (refund) if you dont like it.

Sorry again, missed something in the name, the app is called "home button launcher". Search for it in the play store, youll find it. It has a rocket in its icon.
Once installed you have to navigate to the following menu:
Settins -> Apps -> the three dots top right -> configure apps -> standard apps -> Help and voice input -> help app
This should be set to the google app. Change it to home button launcher...when you long press the home button now it launches the app. Now just configure home button launcher with screen lock pro (remove all apps in the list except screen lock pro). Now go into settings from home button launcher and check the box "auto start mode if only one app selected". Youre good to go.
P.S. I had to translate the menus, since im on a german device, hopefully its not to far off from reality
When you read the reviews of screen lock pro it turns out it only darkens screen to maximum and then waits for time out to lock the screen, apparently it's easily visible when it's dark as backlight is still visible.
Good effort, kudos to devs but I read there is a problem when trying to unlock phone before the timeout locks the phone. Most of the times this will not be a problem but just wanted to highlight the side-effect of this solution.
I think I will live with default settings, and keep pressing power button, until I root phone / someone finds a way to do proper screen lock working with fingerprint.

Launcher that allows Knock On/Off

okay, so the G6 is pretty sweet. debloated it, installed Nova (LG's three launchers are pretty terrible, especially that cheesy "stretch" effect), everything is pretty much how i want it (not Rooted), except: Nova Launcher doesn't allow Knock On/Off.
i can dbl tap to wake, takes me to the lockscreen. fingerprint reader is whipsmart and FAST, so this isn't so much of an issue. but without Knock Off, i have to wait for the screen to time out OR press the power button. workarounds: tap the thin notification strip at the top twice -- which is hella awkward, when i have this giant screen; or install a 3rd party app -- which kind of nuts when the phone natively supports this functionality.
anyone know of an alternate launcher that won't inhibit LG Knock Off?
This works fine in Nova, but you have to be rooted. I don't think it is Nova fault, it is just like this in Android.
You can actually try to enable this action in Nova's settings, there is some workaround when you are not rooted, but it won't be same...
Nova has this feature if your rooted, if your not they have a similar one, you double knock to turn off but puts it in standby until your auto-lock kicks in.
I double tap the notification bar with nova not rooted and it works fine no matter what app I have up. Unlike all other nova gestures that only work from home screen.

it's what i'm doing right now -- and i like that, as you mentioned, the functionality is available on any screen. but it's awkward for single hand use. didn't know that Nova gestures only work from the home screen. hmmm ... that's also a consideration.

Yes Nova Prime, Gestures, Double tap.
just upgraded to Prime, tried this. doesn't quite work the way i thought it would: double tap turns the screen off but it also disables the fingerprint reader? (!!) so i then have to tap the screen -- which doesn't turn the screen back on, but instead shows the faint outline of nav icons at the bottom. if i hit the home button, then screen comes back.
that's some weird behaviour just to get something like Knock On/Off. no root for the h870DS, so it looks like i'm stuck for the time being ...
I went through the same thing, trying a bunch of different solutions. Not being rooted and on 7.0+, nothing works (hopefully something will work on 8.0+).
You'll get used to using the power button in the back, and tapping the status bar.

i'm resigned to this, hope so. can't live with that LG launcher, when Nova is so much more functional.
Nova works without root. Double tap(knock) on notification bar to sleep. Truly had nothing to do with nova it works with all launchers. Tried 3
I have the double tap gesture in Nova launcher that locks my screen so it keeps the Knock feature.
Can confirm, i have the lawnchair launcher and was missing the feature, double tap the status bar and it works no mather where or with which launcher.
So nothing works so far if you're not rooted?
I remember Nova asked me to choose between two option for double tap to lock when I set the gesture but I chose the one that just turn the screen black and wait for system lock. Really bad. Not sure what was the other option.

There you go! ?
Have tried using fringer print to unlock? Ive forgotten knock on now
There is a quite good workaround for those who are using Tasker. Together with TouchTask plugin (free in Google Play) you can simulate double tap on notification bar to lock your phone. This way you can unlock the phone with fingerprint without need for entering PIN or pattern etc.
Short instruction:
1. Download and install TouchTask. Give it necessary rights in Settings.
2. Create task in Tasker > Plugin > TouchTask.
3. In TouchTask Configuration menu:
In Actions field select TAP
Leave Selection method set to Point (x,y)
Type 716 16 within Selection point field
Set Number of taps to 2
4. Assign an icon to your task in Tasker
Now you can assign your Tasker task to any available gesture in your 3rd party launcher (i.e. double tap in Nova Launcher). After executing assigned gesture your phone will be locked exactly in the same way as if you were to double tap on the notification bar. This way fingerprint works like in LG stock launcher - no need to enter PIN or Pattern after unlocking phone with fingerprint.

Is double tap to turn off screen possible

As the title suggests is it possible to double tap on empty area of Home Screen to turn the phone off just like we use Double tap to wake the phone.
This was an inbuilt feature on Asus Zenfone 5z and seems counter intutive to have only one option to turn the screen on and not off here.
Regards
One option; with Nova launcher
Yes, likely via custom ROMs.
Also, probably via custom launchers. Nova Prime allows double-tap to "lock screen". Double tap to "screen off" very likely via a specific 'Nova activities' option but I haven't figured this out yet.
EdXposed ---> install GravityBox ---> it's then possible to turn screen off via double-tap on lock screen or via double-tap on status bar.

You can use edge screen. SoftKey Edge. There is a lock option. It is not double tap but it works.
you can add the screen off icon at navigation bar with a samsung app called Navstar, with that you can single tap to turn off the screen

Wish you could open and app with a button. That way I can reserve the power double tap for another app.

You must have the prime license, in gestures&inputs there are multiple options to choose from, for each gesture you can choose any action available, you can even have the same action assigned to multiple gestures, I use one finger down to lock, and also double tap to lock

Feeling seriously numb right now. I've used Nova (Prime) for years, and never knew that was there. Searched all over for a good program to sleep/ lock. Found a very simply one (Screen Lock Widget 1.0) which is no longer available, but I have. Works great. No resources used. But having the ability in Nova is great.
So.....thank you for sharing that. It's the simple things in life.
It makes no sense why Samsung would give us the means to tap awake our screen but not add that option to turn it off.
That was a weird decision for not including double tap to sleep. It's like making an automatic car with clutch where the clutch is only used for the reverse lol.
Anyhow, this is by far the best app on the playstore that can put the phone sleep and still use the default One UI.
The nice thing about it is that you can also tap on the status bar to put the phone to sleep while using an app for instance.
Tripe tap on the home screen is recommended though, you'll understand why after using it for a while

The only review from a Note 10+ user of this app suggests not to install.

That is very interesting, I never use always on display and it seems like the Note 10 has a lot of issues. For instance Samsung voice recorder app doesn't play recorded audios while the screen off( stops playing after 2min or so).

I just tried Nav Star app from within Good Lock (From Samsung App store) and added 2 extra buttons.
Thanks to the user who recommended it earlier, now I can turn off phone as well pullbdown notification bar from the Navigation bar, if I can get used to these extra buttons I might as well keep them.
Yes software wise they do need to improve a lot of things here.
1. First Install Good Lock :
http://apps.samsung.com/appquery/appDetail.as?appId=com.samsung.android.goodlock
2. Then Install Nav Star : http://apps.samsung.com/appquery/appDetail.as?appId=com.samsung.systemui.navillera
Well, very useful indeed, but I prefer hiding the nav bar, just to avoid screen burn in and to get some more screen area
